Egyptian[laptop]
evening all
danielIL
evening
Egyptian[laptop]
i m building a rac (10.2.0.1) on centos 5.4 - 64bit in kvm virtual machines. i have created a 3 storage disk that is shared between the 2 vms. i have successfully installed RAC the product but i always fail with the database 10.2.0.1 software install with ora-15072 error. - i have also set up 3 asm "disks" fra data1 data2. i need help
s/3/3rd
3asm disks on raw partitions
danielIL
i think this says it all http://dbaspot.com/forums/oracle-errors/281255-ora-15072-command-requires-least-string-failure-groups-discovered-only-string.html
Egyptian[laptop]
danielIL: could i run what i comprehend from that page thru you?
that if i am using external redundancy i STILL need a minimum of 3 disks?
coz my error msg says i need 1 failure group and only 0 found and i really dont know how that can be happening!
does anybody ever use external redundancy on asm on raw on external disks?
Dormir
I have
delewis
external is the way to go if you have a decent backend storage system.
anything EMC or IBM, for example.
TomJ
but only on those, not on any SAN?
th3r0rn_
hola
aluien habla espaƱol? =(

TomJ
anyone awake? I have a DB that is running but I cant connect to it - sqlplus sys as sysdba just connects to an idle interface
earlier I changed the IP config of the box - adding a new IP, and changing the listener to bind to that IP
it seems to have messed up the running DB somehow
BladyBla
hey guys
any idea why a sequence would jump from 10002 to 50000?
some oracle thing i don't know about?
boingolov
BladyBla, vaguely possible the cache value was set to something insane
BladyBla
i could just check that
boingolov
or maybe someone dropped and recreated the sequence without telling you
I'm betting option #2 is the more likely scenario
BladyBla
hmm.. i'll check out the creation date
boingolov
it's also possible that some script was running, inserted a bunch of records, then did a rollback. or deleted the records.
BladyBla
could it be something the dba's did?
i.e. take into account the the dba's only do backups etc.. they don't do application stuff
boingolov
BladyBla, it's possible the sequence was inadvertently dropped and they recreated it with some much much much larger starting value in order to avoid collisions, especially if they only knew what the value was at some point in the past and had no idea what value(s) in which table(s) were auto incremented based on the sequence
all that said, left to its own devices, oracle's sequence incrementing behavior is pretty predictible. cache values will be a factor, also increment by of course
BladyBla
actually nah i'm an idiot
it's actually 10050
which fits in with the cache * increment
cache is set to 20
http://www.arikaplan.com/oracle/ari82599.html
boingolov
ahh
BladyBla
Thanks.. that cache explination sent me on the right google path
i completly understand it now
so cache value is an imemberoy cache, so it caches the next 20 values in the sequence
boingolov
right
BladyBla
but it also sets the sequence to 20 values in the future, if you call nextval it uses the cache, but if the database restarts or the cache expires for whatever reason
then the sequence jumps
boingolov
right
BladyBla
it's good i found it quite confusing before that
boingolov
since it does whatever it needs to do to guarantee atomicness etc
BladyBla
yeah
The problem is that our users use the primary keys for identifying those records outside of the system
i.e. this is Audit no 66
boingolov
but keep in mind that also in that search for omni present super galactic atomicness, it will also transcend transactions. i.e., you do a .nextval , even if you rollback you incremented the sequence
BladyBla
and they were asking why is it audit no 80 now
right!... no i didn't know that

boingolov
if you need audit trails based on auto generated ID's, you might want to go application level, but it's a lot harder to guarantee atomicness there

yello ;)

morning
mfilipe
Hi! I want show the ori.cgcent and ori.codcli in select, but I don't know. See: http://pastebin.com/dc482d5e . If I add they I get the error 'ORA-00904: "ORI"."CGCENT": invalid identifier'
phimic
hi all
how can i exchange to voting disk
is it possible to create a new raw parition and just change it out against the old voting disk?
hali
just add one, delete the old
you can have multiple disks
phimic
hali: ok i will try that
mfilipe
how can I add variable in select clause?
hali
:1 ?
mfilipe
hali: I want use the table of subselect in select
http://pastebin.com/dc482d5e
if I added ori.cgcent and ori.codcli in select I get the error 'ORA-00904: "ORI"."CGCENT": invalid identifier'
hali
should work, unless the table ori doesn't have a column called cgcent
or ah
no
just do a plain in that case
you don't need the subselect
mfilipe
hali: in mysql I can use INNER JOIN, but with oracle I don't know :(
phimic
hali: can i create a new ocr raw partition too that easy way?
hali
mfilipe: oracle supports inner join, unless your version is *really* old , then you use x=y(+) syntax
phimic
hali: is it neccessary to create an new signature on the ocr disk, i cannot start crs i get the error
PROC-22: The OCR backend has an invalid format
hali
dd the old disk
phimic
still get the error PROC-22: The OCR backend has an invalid format
mfilipe
hali: thanks
it works! :)
usn_work
good afternoon
phimic
usn_work: hi
usn_work
hi phimic
phimic
wiping out the ocr with dd is not enough to start the crs properly
my ocr is corrupt i cannot start crs and ocrcheck says PROT-601: Failed to initialize ocrcheck :(
usn_work
wipe it with dd
phimic
usn_work: i already did this dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/raw/raw1 bs=8192 count=500
usn_work
you have to re run root.sh
phimic
usn_work: i did rac1:/opt/oracle/10.2/crs/bin # . /opt/oracle/10.2/crs/root.sh
Checking to see if Oracle CRS stack is already configured
Oracle CRS stack is already configured and will be running under init(1M)
eueu
Hello! I know that it is possible to get the DDL for a view with 'SELECT dbms_metadata.get_ddl('VIEW', 'view_name', 'user') FROM dual' but I had once a script that generated the DDL line by line with line numbers
phimic
i executed it on both cluster nodes but still no luck starting crs
usn_work
did you blank the voting disks as well?
phimic
usn_work: no
usn_work
please try
phimic
usn_work: ok
usn_work
all voting disks, all OCRs and re run root.sh - don't source it!
phimic
usn_work: should i dump /dev/raw/raw* or directly /dev/sdb1 ...
usn_work
make sure that NO and NO CRS process runs on node2
Then double check
NO CRS process
on node2
:)
I'd write into the raw davices as user ORACLE, phimic
phimic
usn_work: ok
usn_work
phimic, in my experience it's sufficient to blank wit dd if=/dev/zero of=xyz bs=1M count=100
phimic
usn_work: ok thanks for the tip
usn_work: after wiping out and reboot should i try to start crs?
usn_work
phimic, no
wipe voting and ocr, and start the crs-shipped root.sh now
phimic
sorry forgot, time to go into the weekend
usn_work
OIC ;)
danielIL
Egyptian[laptop1 did you manage? I only now saw your response
ShaMun
Anyone using oracle in Aix.
boingolov
solaris and linux here
DiscordianUK
Linux and Solaris here
Dormir
I've worked on it on AIX
TheBonsai
usn does, since a while now (not ehre)
*here
ShaMun
Dormir, i am trying to make deploy package of pl-sql. any tips.
TheBonsai
shouldn't depend on OS
ShaMun
ok
DiscordianUK
Hello ShaMun, AIX now is it, it was Fedora t'other day and then Solaris
ShaMun
DiscordianUK, i dont like fedora, thank you, it crashed and it even doesnt have driver to get help a small requests. for linux ubuntu is better (down Fedora, go other linuxes).
DiscordianUK
haha we spent ages trying to help you
ShaMun
DiscordianUK, i really thank u, for that. But i really faced a problem to main server, just to know it supports RAID/SCSI or not for Fedora. a "2 character answer: ja or no" was too much asked! for 500+ fedora operators!. maybe but, i am afraid of Fedora now scared me.
DiscordianUK
Oh well if Ubuntu works for you, that's cool
TheBonsai
why not just take a supported linux platform...?
or at least something like CentOS
DiscordianUK
Both 10 and 11g run happily enough on fedora but I wouldn't use it for a server
as I said yestrerday
TheBonsai
well, as long as it runs i don't really care much about where it runs
okay, it should smell a bit unice
DiscordianUK
Oracle on Windows is just wrong
ShaMun
TheBonsai, i think ubuntu did a good advertise for server tools here > in fedora u do "yum whole world" but here its static : http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/serveredition/features
progma
< DiscordianUK> Oracle on Windows is just wrong <-- haha
Egyptian[laptop1
danielIL: no still not able to .. i wiped out the oracle, crs as well as asm install and still get the same error message .. oh and the disks too
boingolov
I wonder what the percentage of production oracle envrionments run on windows
DiscordianUK
dunno for large enterprises I'd guess very small
boingolov
I was in oracle training and several of the people in there said they ran on windows
most of them worked for the state
DiscordianUK
perhaps I'm wrong and there's lots, I understood though that Oracle gar
s/gar/target Solaris and linux
boingolov
can't imagine windows is a good fit
but I can't speak from personal experience
DiscordianUK
I had once or twice to intervene with Windows servers running Oracle, I found it very hard
But then I'm a Unix sysadmin/dba
boingolov
yeah, i guess it's all what you're used to
I'm certainly more comfortable in a *nix environment
DiscordianUK
Windows is a whole different paradigm#
i wonder sometimes what Oracle rdb on VMS was like
boingolov
I bet it could be summed up by one word: weird
just like anything vms ;)
vms had some neat features though, what little I remember of it, but I never really got the hang of it
the people who knew it well swore by it though
DiscordianUK
yeah it does
boingolov
is it still around?
DiscordianUK
VMS is alive and well on Alpha and Itanium
boingolov
neat
DiscordianUK
HP just released 8.4
boingolov
neat
the shell was just weird as hell to me
DiscordianUK
DCL ? it is different
boingolov
we had a vms system at the university I attended
yeah, dcl
DiscordianUK
I run VAX/VMS under emulation on Linux
boingolov
they also had some vms machines at toyota when I worked there a meelion years ago
really?
the freevms or whatever?
DiscordianUK
Sure moment, I'll get the URL
No real VMS 7.3
boingolov
how does one get a license for real vms 7.3 ?
DiscordianUK
boingolov
very cool
by the way, are you a RAW fan?
DiscordianUK
RAW yeah sure
boingolov
very cool
DiscordianUK
Love his stuff
boingolov
me too
downloading simh source now
DiscordianUK
"Welcome to OpenVMS (TM) VAX Operating System, Version V7.3"
boingolov
so where do I get a copy of vms 7.3 ?
DiscordianUK
i bought my copy for 30$
I registered with Encompass the US chapter
boingolov
I clicked on the link from the simh site for details on the hobbyist license, but the link is borked
DiscordianUK
Got my reg details and paid montegar.com and they shipped a CD
Yes I noticed that
boingolov
montegar also gives 404
hrm
DiscordianUK
I can't offer to offer it for upload , I'm not at home
boingolov
google seems to have an idea though
DiscordianUK
I believe if you have google-fu you'll find it yes
danielIL
Anyone here tried TOra ?
DiscordianUK
yes
I like Tora
danielIL
did you ever use Toad?
