I am trying to compile a package and I'm having trouble because I get the 00913 too many values, because I'm doing a SELECT * INTO TABLE1 ... INSERT INTO TABLE2 where TABLE1 has less columns then TABLE2 but the COLUMN names match 100% but I am specifying the data for the two coumns before the insert? if you need clarification let me know
boingolov
in our setup, we have 10gr2 living on solaris sparc. we'd like to have database links / heterogeneous services connected into m$ sql server. it looks like gateways can do this, but we'll need to install it on a windows box. is this corect?
DiscordianUK
Don't /msg prodcutnew

do oracle reports queues has something similar to tnsnames.ora so that clients on the network can find the queues? or should they be automatically discoverable?
wsy
hi y'll
I am new to Freenode, how many channels related to Oracle or DBMS?especially internal research?
DiscordianUK
internal research?
satoruyoshida
wsy : you could find db2, mysql, postgresql and etc if you would retrieve list.
wsy
what i mean internal research is about Oracle data structure, data file format etc.
how to retrieve channel list? :p
DiscordianUK
You mean Oracle's trade secrets?
wsy
That's right, and I also interested in how Shareplex implemented.
DiscordianUK
I am not privy to them
I'm sure the NSA would like to know you're interested in what is classed as a munitions technology
wsy
lol
I know there are a lot of application could extract data from Oracle data file if they were not encrypted
DiscordianUK
Even if I knew , if I told you, I'd have to kill you
wsy
if you told me, I'd like to killed by you. :p
I am frustrated with Oracle row chaining.

i'm having a few issues trying to get reports queue running on oracle 10gas on linux - i have created the queue and it seems to be up and running, but when i submit a job using rwrun.sh nothing happens. when i submit it using rwclient.sh it hits the queue (i can see the jobs in queue count go up to 1), but it complains of REP-0108: File 'islogosc.bmp'
i've set REPORTS_PATH to point to the directory
and tried kicking if off from the directory containing the picture, but it still can't find the file
i suspect maybe i need to set the REPORTS_PATH for the reports queue seperately somewhere, but I can't work out how
i've tried setting it from the console session before i started the queue , hoping it would inherit the setting (it didn't)
anyone know what else I could try?
wsy
quit

hi
geega
hi.. in a procedure, i want to delete the entries from tables.. Table names i am getting in a for loop
is that possible
oracle_
you want to do it in dynamic execute immediate ?
admin0
hi .. if binds are different but statement is same, are they treated same or different ? like select abc from table where abc = :xyz and select abc from table where abc = :xyx
verx
i'm using 11g, how do i create logins for remote connection?
logins that aren OS logins

DiscordianUK
GRANT connect etc to username IDENTIFIED BY 'password';
verx
thanks!
im slowly migrating into oracle heh, after using mssqlserver for about 7 years :p
DiscordianUK
I know nothing of this MS SQL of which you speak
verx
most difficult part is really getting the hang of linux environment
DiscordianUK
(Action) has been running unix since 1986 and Linux since 1993
verx
nice
hrmmz weird /sbin isnt in path by default
DiscordianUK
That's linux distro dependant
Which one are you using?
verx
im running oracle enterprise linux 5
DiscordianUK
then indeed it won't be in $PATH for anyone but root
Nor will /usr/sbin
verx
ah
just curious, whats the most common distro that people run oracle on?
DiscordianUK
RedHat would be my guess , followed by Solaris
verx
the documentation is really excellent
DiscordianUK
some strange people run it on Windows
But that's just peverse
verx
well to my surprise the book that i picked on oracle, goes over installing process on windows :|
DiscordianUK
Well it certainly runs on Windows
I've an Oracle-XE instance running on my laptop
under XP
verx
how does the licensing works, since you are able to download enterprise version from them
DiscordianUK
You have to pay for commercial or development use
Evaluation and learning use is fine
Oracle-XE is free for whatever use but is somewhat restricted
verx
ah ok
phimic
good morning
verx
i installed enterprise, wasnt sure what the deal is since im only using it for learning purpose
good to know
mator

Franek_K1mono
hello
i've a stupid question. why on website listed in topic as primary knowledge source Oracle Enterprise Linux is missing?
mator
Franek_K1mono, because no one is using it? :)
Franek_K1mono, talking about puschitz, its about installation of oracle to various linux distros and fixing encountered errors, but oracle linux should be already prepared for oracle installation and there will be no problems installing oracle on it?
so it's no point to specify oracle linux just like "oracle linux - installation went success"
Franek_K1mono
mator: but there are some problems with it :)
mator
Franek_K1mono, then it should be addressed to oracle forums
Franek_K1mono
you need to do huge magic with sysctl's ;)
windsok^
in what situations would you use snapshot isolation?
Franek_K1mono
mator: another question. are you using oracle on linux? and if yes, which distro?
mator
actually all kernel/userland parameters are documented in the oracle installation manual and they are almost same for every linux/solaris
Franek_K1mono
i'm looking for some alternative for OEL x86_64
DiscordianUK
(Action) runs Oracle on Fedora
mator
Franek_K1mono, i'm not using oracle on linux in production, just for my tests... we have a billing database on a sun solaris, on my prev. job we've used oracle under sles9... some people here are using RAC installation on vmware esx
Franek_K1mono, get RHEL if you can afford it, if not centos will do fine, if not stick to fedora
DiscordianUK
CentOS is a better platform for a production server than Fedora
Both are free
TheBonsai
SLES here @ work
Franek_K1mono
hm
so maybe i'll try that CentOS
OEL is making me going crazy
DiscordianUK
That would be a good plan
though OEL is not that much different from CentOS
Franek_K1mono
since july i can't see even one single update :/
centos is also yum-based?
DiscordianUK
Both are recompiled from the free source rpms that redhat make available
yes it is
Franek_K1mono
(i've never used it)

purestrain
hi
i'm having trouble connecting to a oracle database, i'm always getting "tns-12545"; sqlplus with only username/pw works so far
everything is configured for local access, e.g. host=127.0.0.1
nickgrey147
What can i use as a unique system vairble ? there is going to be about 3 db links and they all need to insert into a single table with pk's , at the moment iam just useing 3 letters on each links trigger for example if (:new.LEAD_ID) is null then Select 'A'||LEADS_SEQ.nextval , but i would like to make it dynamic
hali
purestrain: oracle xe?
purestrain: normal oracle usually misbehaivs when running on loopback
nickgrey147
purestrain, doesnt the tnsname exist ?
purestrain
tnsnames exists (oracle xe? don't really know, just installed 11g on a vm)
milan
sux that you can't "order by" data in a materialized view :/
hali
you get that everywhere
nothing is ordered unless you order by in your query
milan
sure it is
hali
no it's not
at least, don't assume it is
milan
create table t as select * from t2 order by 1
hali
there is no guarantee "select * from t" is ordered
milan
you can do tat for a MV too, but the MV changes
hali
it may be returned totally random
milan
i van't said that
*haven't
hali
then what are you saying?
milan
my concern is how data is distributed physically over blocks
because if it end up randomly distributed, index range scans will be slow
and i have no way to control that in a MV
IMO, a complete refresh should optionally order data
hali
you have very little control over that in anything these days, with backends san distributing disks etc
but would be interesting to know if there are any measurable differences, have you done any tests?
milan
for one, when CBO sees a high clustering factor it will do a full table scan, and i don't like that
(another problem is that clustering factor is such a stupid and unreliable (and simple) way to calculate index badness)
how do i escape the & caracter in sql+ so that it doesn't do lexical substitution?
meh, i will substitute it with a &
hali
set define ?
milan
set escape off
but i like my way better :)
brig
how i can work with java in oracle forms6i? i can't search any docs =/

When I try to use a where clause against a timestamp column like where field < '2009-11-25 16:32:55.671' I get a ORA-01843: not a valid month exception
What is the required format for a query like this to work ?
TheBonsai
to_date(format, string)
solar_sea
WHERE column < TO_DATE('2009-11-25 16:39:09.62','YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS.FF2') - says ORA-01821: date format not recognized, I'm following the format from http://www.techonthenet.com/oracle/functions/to_date.php
I'm using 11g, is this format still supported or obsolete by something else ?
annimart
Replace TO_DATE with TO_TIMESTAMP because it's a timestamp and not a date
FF = Fractionnal secondes
and DATE not conteint fractionnal seconds
only timestamp
and if your "column" is of DATE datatype, ... your query won't work
solar_sea
it's a TIMESTAMP(6)
annimart
ok so => Replace TO_DATE with TO_TIMESTAMP
solar_sea
alright, since the fractional seconds vary every time, what is the universal format for them ? I get TO_TIMESTAMP('2009-11-25 16:45:18.265','YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS.FF2') ORA-01880: the fractional seconds must be between 0 and 999999999 - they seem in range to me
An FF without postfixed number worked
thanks for the assistance :)

Is it possible to do an order by on a table which has no SEQ keys?
boingolov
anyone use oracle gateway for sql server?
tstebut
Hello
I have a worrying problem on my database
SQL> ALTER DATABASE open;
ALTER DATABASE open
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [kcratr_scan_lastbwr], [], [], [],
[], [], [], [], [], [], [], []
boingolov
tstebut, look at your alert logs, but generally speaking an ora 600 means you need to at least search metalink and possibly open a case with oracle support
what version of oracle?
tstebut
11g
boingolov, as it is a test database, I'd like to delete it and recreate it with dbca , but I can't : getting the same error
boingolov
tstebut, shut down the database, then you should be able to delete it
if not, then you can always modify your oratab, then manually delete all of the data files
