Hello - can someone confirm that 38.0.1 is the last version of Firefox that does not have Hello and Pocket embedded?
b0at
neither activate until you choose to, and can be trivially neutered
also, hello is 99.9% webrtc, which is a cross-browser standard
but you could check the release notes. i'm sure it's in there
specing
I know for a fact that I am this close *shows a tiny amount* to going back to 31.8
b0at
well, some people have experienced some weird hardware stuff. sometimes it seems like the ESR release should be a more popular option.
Peng
Yes, known security vulnerabilities are way better than a feature you have to uncheck
wdbl
I'd rather use a version that doesn't have Pocket or Hello or any other closed-source, third-party code at all.
specing
Peng: pentadactyl doesen't work out of the box
b0at
if you don't want closed-source code, those aren't the features you should worry about.
specing
Peng: totaly unusable for me

wdbl
It's not a matter of just disabling it, it's a matter of lost trust. Looking throught the release notes I see that 38.0.5 introduced Pocket. I don't see anything about Hello.
specing
I have to put firefox into a VM anyway
b0at
wdbl: hello came in earlier. it also might be referred to as "loop", as it is also in the wiki
wdbl
OK, no problem. I just wanted to use it for testing some stuff - I guess I should create a VM for that anyway.
I don't care about vulnerabilities for a browser that I only use to test my own stuff.
Mozilla *is* getting killed in the press for embedding those extensions though. Personally I don't care so much about closed source as I do about having a choice. So, I simply refuse to have the decision thrust upon me and I won't it on my own workstation.
b0at
what part do you think is closed-source?
wdbl
I said I don't care about closed source.
I don't want Pocket and Hello and that's just about the long and short of it.
b0at
why?
i see no reason for them to be included, but the backlash seems to be very confused.
wdbl
Because choice is better than no choice
and because I have plenty of alternatives
I don't *need* firefox at all. Testing my stuff in Firefox is a service to those few users who still choose to use it.
at least, those few of my own users...
b0at
ok, fine. never mind.
wdbl
It's just a matter of principle.
b0at
which principle? how would a virtual machine change that?
wdbl
Yeah, that's why I think I just decided that it's not even worth building a VM for.
The principle though, is the one I described - having a choice
Mozilla used to be the company that didn't force crap like Pocket and Hello on you. Now they are.

Sorry for the vague question, but what is the name of the feature if I type an address into the navbar it completes it to "go to tab"?
And as a follow-up, how do I disable this?
kbrosnan
switch to tab
hold down shift as i recall when you select the item
yarddog
is this the right channel for 40+ ? seems to be a lot of older talk and support
fellipe
Hi all. I am trying lock proxy setting for editing using a bat file in windows. I've tried to add "lockpref("network.proxy.type", "4");" to default/channel-prefs.js but it has no effect. Could someone tell me why? And what's the right way?
kbrosnan
short of kicking or banning people there is not much control that can be enforced of the questions that are asked
abyxcos
kbrosnan: Any way to turn this off? This feature is never what I want. I'm not seeing it in about:config.
kbrosnan
not that i know of
maybe an extension?
b0at
abyxcos: possibly browser.urlbar.suggest.openpage in about:config, judging by the pref name

kbrosnan
that sounds like the nightly url bar suggestions
abyxcos
Aye, I don't have that preference, only browser.urlbar.restrict.openpage. 35.0.1.
kbrosnan: A few addons on turning up by that name, thanks.
Also, my switch to tab doesn't seem to work, it just picked a random tab that was not the one it suggested would be switched to.
b0at
it seems to work to disable it in v40
abyxcos
I don't have a newer firefox to test on though.
kbrosnan
fellipe: you should not be editing that file, use mozilla.cfg as outlined in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lock_Prefs
fellipe
kbrosnan: let me see!
abyxcos
Also, is there a way to see CPU usage inside firefox? One of my sites seems to be leaking CPU (as dumb as that sounds.)
kbrosnan
not in any simple manner currently
abyxcos
Any non-simple manner? Short of using strace?
kbrosnan
using the dev tools profiler pointed at the whole of firefox
abyxcos
I see how that can get messy.
kbrosnan
then it is up to reading the cicken bones
fellipe
kbrosnan: I've followed that procedures, and I need exactly that, I mean, lock proxy type. But it did not work. Could you give me any clue?
kbrosnan
i've not used that feature. it has been many a year since i dabbled in large scale deployments
fellipe
kbrosnan: oh, it was not working due the presence of cck2 plugin
kbrosnan
*headdesk* cck2 lets you set prefs

can you edit the javascript that's currently running?
tlolczyk
Ok I may be asking this wrong, so give me a break. Is there a Dictionary of attributes used in sessionstore.js? Basicallyu a description of it's structure?
There is something I want to do in an extension, given a particular tab and a stack of URLs I want to delete a URL from the middle of the stack. Is this possible? By stgack I mean for example, that I go to youtube and listen to "stairway to heaven", then click a side link for "casmir", then click a link for "don't get fooled again", then click a link for "the big bang theory". So I can go back and forth between those URLs.

I've got a question about enigmail. Are the emails encrypted when put in local and remote folders or only when sent?
I believe they are, but I want to be sure.

Where are my Firefox profiles stored on Windows?

oh, I realize now this is the wrong channel. I tried to join #mozilla but was brought here

Hi, is there a way to disable video tag autoplay (navigator-side, on every websites)?
But an add-on with whitelist/blacklist would be better
Found media.autoplay.enabled for my first need.
Fahrradkette
Is that the right place to ask about firefox-android addons?
specing
there are firefox-android addons?
Fahrradkette
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/android
specing
because firefox on android seems to have as many options as an on/off switch
brosnan
Fahrradkette: creating? https://discourse.mozilla-community.org/c/add-ons and #jetpack on irc.mozilla.org
Fahrradkette
I was wondering if there are request policy and/or noscript equivalent addons for the android version of firefox, I coudn't find any. Even umatrix isn't yet working on android :(
tanath
Fahrradkette, would be nice but browsing on mobile rather sucks
