Nikesh: welcome to the World Wide Crap
Nikesh
specing: I disabled Flash and Firefox is still hogging CPU
specing
Nikesh: yeah...
Nikesh
It's making my machine unpleasant to use.. 2.1gz quad core even! I expect things to be snappy, not to see lag when I'm typing in a text field..
specing
disable javascript
Nikesh
As a test or permanent solution? That'd make most of the web bleak
specing
and use an adblocker
Nikesh: permanent
NoScript
Nikesh
Really? Wouldn't that make most sites unusable?
Also I find this weird because on a slower i3 with only 4GB RAM and Ubuntu 14.10 Firefox performed fine
so it's something to do with my drivers or.. this version of Firefox..? I don't know
specing
Nikesh: you enable a few things you need here and there (such as github and reddit) and stop using crap sites

b0at
you could try safe mode. it disables hardware acceleration and some other stuff: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode#w_how-to-start-firefox-in-safe-mode
that'd tell you whether graphics is making it worse than it would have been.
Nikesh
specing & b0at I'll give it a try
steven10172
When looking at the Performance Call Tree what does it mean by "Graphics"?
Nikesh
b0at: So it seems faster
I did already have 'hardware selection' unchecked about:preferences#advanced > General
So I wonder what it is
acceleration* :P
b0at
likely an extension or plugin
Nikesh
not selection
specing
Nikesh: oh another suggestion
use the Disconnect plugin to stop tracker
(s)
b0at
with a privacy ad blocking list, that's mostly redundant
specing
Ghostery also works
b0at
ghostery is made by ad networks. i wouldn't trust it.
i recommend fanboy's complete/ultimate list. it combines easylist with some other good stuff. ublock origin's default settings are pretty good, other than not including that or the privacy lists.
specing
b0at: I heard there is also a built-in antitrack blacklist with recent versions of ff
b0at
yep, "tracking protection"
basically an ad blocker on a tiny list
turned on with the pref privacy.trackingprotection.enabled in about:config
specing
doubt any ad blockers block facebook
b0at
https://easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org/easyprivacy.txt has several facebook.com filters
so at least they try
Nikesh
Hm.. I'm investigating how to install Firefox 39 instead of 40, as it didn't seem this way
b0at
Nikesh: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/
you can turn auto update off first, and that should persist
also, back up your profile, just in case. you can find it with the button on the about:support page
specing
Nikesh: package manager?
ah ubuntu
apt something something
b0at: one does not simply bypass the package manager
b0at
heh
specing
b0at: it means going into a world of hurt
b0at: pretty sure all distros disable auto update
b0at
yeah, if it came from the distro

specing
it should have...
b0at
not all distros package firefox, i mean
ForceMultiplier
Can anyone help me w/ an SSL issue?
tanath
*ahem* ublock & privacy badger
CPngN
mushroom,mushroom
Tazmain
hi all, has anyone had when they restore a window in FF they can no longer use a mouse scroll wheel in that window ?
b0at
no, but it sounds like a bad interaction with the window manager
it might have something to do with hardware acceleration, possibly. if that's the case, safe mode would work fine: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode#w_how-to-start-firefox-in-safe-mode
Tazmain
this seems to happen in windows and linux. At times, yes safe mode works, but who wants to always use that ?
b0at
but does it ever happen in safe mode? if not, then that shows one of the things it disables is the culprit.
and you can disable hardware acceleration alone and see if that's the cause, or some extensions, as further diagnostics.
weird, there's an old bug with the same issue https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=212556
really old
but fixed
might be a related regression
on the other hand, if you're using a plugin like flash, they can play dirty tricks with focus handling
Tazmain
flash is disabled
tanath
ugh. firefox is constantly using a lot of cpu and writing to dik
disk
2gb ram, 3gb virtual. avg ~30% cpu but often 50-100. and keeps writing to disk intermittently
and i block javascript by default
willer
in ff nightly, when i move mouse cursor away from the window and back, it takes two wheel scroll clicks to scroll the page one step
lapion
So I started a firefox profile with all plugins disabled and still the loading and some functionality in firefox freezes unless my mouse is moving over the browser
Cork
lapion: i would recommend testing if you can reproduce it in firefox safe mode
neglesaks
I have a recurring problem of Firefox wiping the entire URL contents of a window with its tabs. Any knowledge of this bug?
Furthermore, I am unable to fin the sessionstore.js file in my profile folder - any help would be appreciated
Cork
neglesaks: about the sessionstore.js, are you running firefox in private browsing mode?
neglesaks
No. Normal mode. Other how-to guides all poit to the file being in the normpal profile folder - but the backup files are in sessionstore-backups where they are expected to be
rctgamer3
neglesaks: sessionstore.js was moved to the backup folder
don't ask me why
neglesaks
ah. thanks
hm, where is the backup folder, then .P
no folder names backup int he profile folder
chotaz`w
Morning folks! Anyone knows if firefox shares sessions between 2 windows? Even between private/non-private?
auscompgeek
chotaz`w: private browsing always has its own cookie jar, etc., but they're shared across private browsing windows
Jimmymaniac
Hi. Quick question: since Youtube changed their player to the html5 version i no longer have sound in the videos. It's the same in safe mode so i guess it's another thing, and it's not the OS since i have sound in other apps and Youtube had sound with the Flash player. Ideas?
auscompgeek
what OS, what codecs do you have installed?
Jimmymaniac
Stock Firefox from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, version 40.0+build4-0ubuntu0.12.04.4
I thought it was an addon blocking the audio (ublock, privacy badger, ghstery, etc.) or some configuration setting, but it's the same in safe mode
auscompgeek
you're probably missing a gstreamer plugin
unless youtube is using webm
then you might've muted firefox in pulseaudio
Jimmymaniac
Just checked that out, it's not silenced (and strangely Firefox is listed as "CubebUtils")
auscompgeek
I presume that's a side effect of using GStreamer
bakara
Hello, any ideea how i can install this addon https://github.com/Wendor/rutorrent_add ?
Cork
bakara: from ff43+ you can't
the extension needs to be signed to be accepted by firefox from then on
bakara
For real ?
Cork
yes
bakara
im using 40.0.2
