I'm on OS X-something and trying to get rid of the silverlight plugin for the computer's owner. Firefox 40.2 I think. THere's no remove button when I find the plugin in add-ons
b0at
yeah, that's installed on the system side rather than the browser side
specing
kill it with fire
craigbass76
I'd like to kill it with a Linux install, but it's not my box...
b0at
about:plugins should show the path to the file, at least
specing
craigbass76: thats what I meant
b0at
i don't know how it gets installed in osx, so be on the watch for auto-update processes or directives which might eventually replace the file if you simply delete it.
craigbass76
And this is an OSX question, but how do I get from a chatzilla window back to the regular browser window I had open?
xangua
drag the tab to the window┬┐

craigbass76
Is there something I need to do besides erase the silverlight directory?
b0at
depends on how it was installed. i have no idea.
it's worth a try, though.

I'm looking for a new web browser, and am wondering if a proper dark theme can be done within firefox -- one which won't paint the screen white on slow page loads.
(((I've used opera for 15 years but it has abandoned many accessibility features, and the 2-year-old version I still use is showing its age.)))
b0at
Vasistha: https://userstyles.org/styles/90565/firefox-adjust-white-flash-when-opening-new-tab
whether the theme you're using fixes that or not, you can use a little CSS to fix it.
and you can just stick that code in userChrome.css if you don't want to use Stylish, but Stylish is very convenient.
Vasistha
b0at: wow, thanks very much!
my next question is - is there a way to toggle between user styles and default styles, with a hotkey?
(From time to time I need to see a page as it was originally intended, with a white background; I tend to turn the screen brightness down before I do so.....)
b0at
yes
i use this in the "keyconfig" extension from http://mozilla.dorando.at/ http://fpaste.scsys.co.uk/497575?tx=on&submit=Format+it!
Vasistha
oh that is so wonderful. thanks very much b0at, I am so glad I came in at this moment and found you
b0at
where "1" happens to be the style id, which you can get from another style that un-hides it or from one of the stylish accessory extensions
https://userstyles.org/styles/59320/show-firefox-stylish-style-id
i also use this http://fpaste.scsys.co.uk/497576?tx=on&submit=Format+it! to toggle all styles. same as View -> Page style -> No style
Vasistha
b0at: I haven't gotten very far, but ... is it possible to change the style/theme/colors of firefox's preferences? Maybe that's what I need to change in the userChrome.css?
b0at
yes, should be because they're more web-page-style now
Vasistha
nice.
b0at
but a complete theme which is dark would probably also cover that, like nasa night launch or ftdeepdark: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/complete-themes/
but here's an example of just css for it, i think: https://userstyles.org/styles/115959/about-preferences-firefox
Vasistha
I have spent a whole lot of time on irc, and it has been very rare that I've come across someone as helpful as you. Seriously, thank you so much man. I'm actually starting to feel like firefox could be my browser now, it's starting to feel like home.
b0at
no problem. i've been tinkering with firefox's interface for a while, and i wish everybody knew what was possible.
Vasistha
Is there a better place than this channel to ask about stylish?
or perhaps a better question - is it considered OT?
b0at
it's not off topic. and, it doesn't seem to haev its own channel, anyway.
Vasistha
alright. Well this one is a long shot -- it seems that when applying styles, that is done to ALL tabs. Is there a way for it to apply one set of styles on one tab, and another set elsewhere, and ... KEEP that, as long as those tabs are open?
b0at
not that i know of
here's an old thread with that question: https://forum.userstyles.org/discussion/1838/style-for-the-current-tab-only-possible
Vasistha
hmm. how about a way to prioritize one over another? for example I've installed "global dark style" and "dark-facebook 2", but I find that the former is overriding things in the latter and concealing facebook icons
b0at
i'd just exclude the site from the global one
like at the top of this: https://userstyles.org/styles/110255/global-invert-or-dim

Vasistha
ah perfect, that should work, thanks
white flash still painful, e.g. when opening or closing windows (not tabs) ... wonder if I can find a solution
alanjf
(Action) sets +o Vasistha
Vasistha
does that mean I should go look some more? :) at least the duration is short. But it does it whenever I change windows, to or away from firefox.
Kiah
About half or so of the videos I try to watch on youtube (some don't have this problem at all) will result in one of the cores of my CPU remaining at 100% usage, no matter what, even after I close the browser. The only way I have found to get the usage to go back down to normal is to manually kill firefox in the terminal (I use linux). I have tried disabling all of my extensions, and the problem persists
b0at
Kiah: do you have flash installed, and if so, have you tried disabling it completely?
Kiah
I do probably have flash installed, though youtube is allegedly set to use the html5 player
Vasistha
Kiah: I usually use youtube-dl to just download them and then view them in vlc or mplayer, keeps the web browser out of the equation. But it's less social or whatever.
Kiah
Yeah, I've been using vlc as a compromise, but it's not a perfect solution. 1. Sometimes I want to read the comments of videos, 2. Playlists/annotations and whatnot don't work 3. Sometimes some channels have a video on their home page, and that autoloads and instantly fu*ks my CPU. That's extremely annoying
Going to plugins and setting Shockwave Flash to "Never" seems to be working so far, except now there are a few videos now and then that just won't play at all
Okay, looks like I was just getting lucky for a while. Another video set it off again
ome
I don't see no Enable multi-process option under linux. What gives?
Mozilla Firefox 40.0
b0at
it's not there in 40
ome
Well, what is the flag then?
b0at
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Electrolysis#Schedule doesn't show a definitive scheduled on date. 42 stable or later.
ome
Because I think it was included as early as 37, yeah?
How do I switch it on? it is there though, no?
I don't see any flag for e10s or electrolysis in about:config huh.
auscompgeek
browser.tabs.remote
you probably want browser.tabs.remote.autostart
ome
Okay, I think it is working.
auscompgeek
I wouldn't recommend trying to use it in 40 though
aeo1ack
Hello. Why there is no forward button?
auscompgeek
there is
rachelfish
aeo1ack: The forward button only appears when you've gone back
moonpunter
lol
"i'm feeling lucky forward"
aeo1ack
rachelfish: i did, really
hm one other time it worked
I mean I just tested this and it appeared
guess I misunderstood my own actions and didn't in fact go back
moonpunter
(Action) slams door behind aeolack

Some feedback on the WebExtentions/FAQ for a lot of peaple the concern atm is: will extention type X be possible with the new model ?
b0at
Qantourisc: we don't know. it's just ramping up.
https://wiki.mozilla.org/WebExtensions
they're working with extension developers to make extensions work.
that page ^ has a list of current apis, and that's not nearly enough to get, eg, noscript running, which they've essentially committed to.
Qantourisc
Ps, what about thunderbird ?
I assume thats going too ?
b0at
and they're planning on adding more-natively things like shortcut support to simulate vimperator. so it should finally become very capable
don't know about thunderbird. work has slowed on it.
Qantourisc
I'm fine with just bugfixes on that btw :)
b0at
if we're lucky, it won't be touched until long after the extension situation is settled down. yeah.
here's a message on the tb planning mailing list with some ideas about addons they're considering: https://mail.mozilla.org/pipermail/tb-planning/2015-August/003949.html
looks like they agree that they'll wait until they're forced into planning for a change
Qantourisc
b0at: shall I publish this conversation ?
b0at
it's all speculation based on minimal information
i have no affiliation with mozilla other than a long-time fan
*other than being
those two links are useful for showing that is and isn't yet planned, though
*what is
Qantourisc
ok thanks
b0at
so i'd suggest linking to those, but not bothering with my late-night fantasies :P
and some more info by the noscript guy: https://hackademix.net/2015/08/22/webextensions-api-noscript/
he's bullish on it
Gatis
