Hi I am having a strange issue, I'm trying to edit a firefox extension, so I unzip the jar and make the changes, then recreate the jar and the extension no longer works.
Even if I simply unzip the jar, then recreate it using `jar cf <unzipped-folder>`, it no longer works. Is there a special compression method I need to use? :\
b0at
afaik, it's a regular zip
and it should be .xpi nowadays
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/XPI says it's just a zip file
if jar does anything exotic, maybe it chokes. you can use the "browser toolbox" to check the browser chrome for errors.
(enable "remote debugging" and inspecting chrome addresses in the dev tools, then "browser toolbox" appears in the developer menu)

b0at: Yeah everything I read says it's a regular zip, but simply extracting then recompressing the file causes the extension to no longer load. This is the LiveHTTPHeaders extension by the way, and I'm doing this on OSX 10.10 with Firefox 39.
I'll try the debugging steps you gave me.
b0at
there's also a different error console that might give useful info, with `firefox -console`
and you can set in about:config browser.dom.window.dump.file to dump that info to a file
Blaster
Okay thanks.
b0at: Still debugging here. I'm a bit confused re this manifest file. It suggests it's searching inside a livehttpheaders directory but such a directory doesn't exist out of the box even with the extension functioning properly. http://pastebin.com/5cqAVhp8
There is a chrome/livehttpheaders.jar file as it stands though.
Or does chrome:// specify that jar file?

b0at
it's an overlay filesystem where the inner archives get put into the namespace somehow
which mostly depends on how they're registered in the manifest or whatever
i dunno. #addons or #firefox on irc.mozilla.org would know, but they may not be active this time of night.

Hmm so weird, I've done this same edit on Windows at least 5 times without the same issue, but now on OSX it's problematic.
Alright I will try them tomorrow.
TomyLobo
firefox just went to www.localhost.com when i refreshed a page on my own machine
can i disable that?
b0at
TomyLobo: probably set browser.fixup.alternate.enabled to false in about:config
TomyLobo
will that also break fixing foo.com to www.foo.com if foo.com is not present?
b0at
i'm not sure
oh, make sure browser.fixup.domainwhitelist.localhost is true first... seems like that should prevent it
unless they kept the old ctrl+enter shortcut to do that, and that's what you hit accidentally
TomyLobo
i'll just disable it and see what happens :)
thanks
browser.fixup.domainwhitelist.localhost defaults to true

b0at: Fixed my issue. I was zipping the file wrong, the content, locale, and skin directories weren't at the top level.
b0at
ah
Reventlov
So, I can freeze my firefox (no addons) when going on a specific page (which is not malicious, I guess)
how can I debug what happens ?
(when launched in strace, it freeze on those instructions: http://sprunge.us/gfRE )
(no addons enabled)
(it doesn't use a lot of computer ressources)
(using refreshfirefox didn't help)
and I cannot use https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-crashes-troubleshoot-prevent-and-get-help since about:crashes is not a recognized url.
(which means the version from my distribution doesn't come with the crash reporter)
auscompgeek
Reventlov: you should download a mozilla build and reproduce this issue, see if you get a crash report
