It feels like Fx is going OOM (not actually crashing, just becoming unresponsive and, sometimes, showing display artifacts) recently. Can anyone confirm this? I still have a 32bit consumer Windows system without PAE patch (illegal, btw. ;) ) and no 3GiB tuning (passing /3GB), but I also didnt have that in the past
The only memory-usage increasing function I remember enabling (or being enabled) is prefetching, but I do hope that it would either back off if memory is becoming scarce or that, at least, old entries are discarded when they are no longer considered useful
There are also less pages actively open concurrently (not counting those inactive because of session restoration), due to me having to restart it more often (feels like it, at least)

Hello, greasemonkey scripts seems to be slow to start : page has time to draw before userscripts get executed, is there a way to "speed them up" ?
(time to fully draw + 1-2 seconds in fact, almost like if i was using DOMContentLoaded)

any chance for Firefox on Windows Phone, now that code generation is possible?
although i don't have much hope now that Mozilla has a competing phone OS

Hey all. I'm trying to enable x264 playback on firefox 42 on windows pro 10 N. I have installed both x86/x64 versions of windows media pack from: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48231 and have restarted my computer. I have even created a fresh profile in firefox that has no plugins or extentions installed. But youtube.com/html5 shows: http://puu.sh/lmFPX/b6bca351b5.png
k_j
is there any extension to make my desktop appear as input video source for getuserMedia API?
Caspy7
k_j: you're welcome to ask in #media on irc.mozilla.org as that's a webrtc topic. I doubt there's an extension, but I don't know enough.
CPngN
v42 is pissing me off like made today
kbrosnan
i know screensharing is a evenual usecase for getUserMedia

k_j
but i get this
i get permission error ,but i both enabled the screen sharing feature and the allowed domain in about:config!
kbrosnan
is it ssl. most new fancy html features are going to require ssl connections
k_j
no,it's a file,localhost
it's a local file://
auscompgeek
file:// has even tighter restrictions than http origins most of the time
k_j
hmm
what a pain
how can i test this without an https server

temporary self-signed cert

Is this a channel where I can ask about XUL stuff?
b0at
yes. also channels on irc.mozilla.org
pgib
Is there a way to get a menuitem or perhaps popup to not show based on some function?
or at least disabled
b0at
with a little css, and either edit userChrome.css or use the simpler Stylish extension, or similar.
userstyles.org has some examples for moving around and hiding menu items.
cippp
#context_closeTab { display: none; }
b0at
and sometimes there's an adjacent separator you can hide with #foo + menuseparator { display: none }
probably want !important after each rule, also
pgib
I'm talking about doing it dynamically in javascript within an extension
The menu displays, but I want the item disabled based on the context of the menu.
CSS could be the solution, but I still need to figure out how to select based on the item that the menu is associated with
b0at
you may be able to add a class to the menu itself
cippp
pgib: i use "dom inspector" and "element inspector", open menu then shift + richt click on what you want
to find class or id
b0at
you can also inspect the ui from the "browser toolbox" in the developer menu (after you enable it in the developer tools settings)
though the dom inspector extension is pretty nice

some webpages use window.location for links instead of href="". When I ctrl+click on these types of links, the current page refreshes and another tab loads the same page. Its different behaviour than 'a href=""' links. How can make firefox treat them the same?
auscompgeek
ussher_: without doing something to rewrite them to actual links, you can't
ussher_
I can rewrite the links, but stackoverflow keeps saying its a browser setting. Situation, I have a bunch of links I want to open as tabs, I want to ctrl+click on each and open but not switch to them. window.open() ignores my "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" of NO and opens immediatly.
b0at
man, stack overflow could have been good. it's like they try to drive people away.
"rewrite" means to change the source with something like a greasemonkey user script. like eliminating the script and setting the href attribute to the correct place, which will handle clicks correctly.

ussher_
used to pay for experts-exchange but now stackoverflow seam to cover mostly everythign I need.
i can change the source of the script, just need it to stay javascript.
if I could change the js to a regular link i could stop caring :)
but since i cant, im stuck looking for a way to get javascript to mimic href. even if its just for me, so a browser setting would work too.
Ive got to using javascript to detect if the ctrl key is pressed when the link is opened and if it is use: window.open(url, '_blank'); but now the stuck place is getting that '_blank' to respect firefoxes "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" preference.
b0at
script on page can't switch tabs, thank go
d
just set anchor.href = url; and remove the click handler and you're done.
ussher_
thats the same as using a normal link.
might need to give in on this one. Thanks for the help auscompgeek and b0at.

My Firefox has a lot of trouble handling javascript, it seems. On another machine, with the same version, it works fine. When I open the console with ctrl-shift-k, I see a lot of errors. Is it possible that those break the page? Or is something else happening? And how can I get the pages to work?
For example, on https://www.asnbank.nl/onlinebankieren/secure/loginparticulier.html I am supposed to be able to enter my credentials, but the text fields remain unselectable on this machine.
Or on twitter.com, the login button doesn't respond at all.
auscompgeek
"a lot of errors" So apparently according to shevek, there's someone in this channel that can read minds.
shevek
auscompgeek: No, but the errors don't seem to be the same everywhere. Many pages don't seem to work, and the only common thing between them seems that they all use javascript. Also, it's pages that work for other people, and for me on other machines, so I'm pretty sure the pages are not the problem. But if you want me to paste some errors, all you had to do is ask. ;-)
InvalidStateError: A mutation operation was attempted on a database that did not allow mutations.
ReferenceError: $ is not defined
auscompgeek
Is this on the same internet connection?
shevek
Yes.
auscompgeek
Does this happen in safe mode?
shevek
I don't know. How do I enter or exit that?
Or you mean for the operating system? I'm not using Windows, this is Debian GNU/Linux.
auscompgeek
one way is Help -> Restart with addons disabled
or you can pass firefox the -safe-mode switch
shevek
Ok, I just restarted it in safe mode and the problem is still there.
My guess is that there's something ancient in my profile. It reminds me of websockets not working because they were disabled from when that was the default when they were experimental. But I have no idea where to look for this.
auscompgeek
You could try creating a new profile and checking whether the problem persists.
shevek
Yes, that does solve it. So that's something, thanks for that. :-) Now I would like to fix it in the old profile, so I don't need to set everything back up, but worst case I can do that.
With the new profile there are also no errors in the console.
auscompgeek
welp, you now have the challenge of figuring out what happened in your existing profile :P
shevek
Yes. I was hoping this was a known problem, so someone here could just tell me, but it seems I'm not that lucky. But at least I have a usable system again. :-)
Zeno`
Hi. Is there any way to get FF to stop annoying me with "Get FF on your iOS and Android devices" ?
b0at
where does it say that?
Zeno`
Just below the "bookmarks bar"
it opens about 10 minutes after I start FF
(linux and windows)
Nobody else has experienced it?
It only started happening today and I have one other report
auscompgeek
heh, I got that a couple of weeks ago myself
Zeno`
auscompgeek, and it has not come back for you?
maybe it will go away after today
auscompgeek
Zeno`: it did today, oddly enough
Zeno`
weird
geez if it doesn't go away I will have to abandon FF... after using it since almost the first release
obnoxious message
maybe if I click "get it now" I can trick it
auscompgeek
there is an x at the end
dunno if you could see it
Zeno`
auscompgeek, yeah, I've pressed that. But if I restart firefox it would come back
I've clicked the "get it now" widget to see if it now thinks I already have it
It told me to enjoy it, so... *shrug* will wait and see
lol, no it's opened again
after about 5 minutes of firefox being opened
so... how do I stop firefox opening this ridiculous "Bring your bookmarks & passwords with you" and "Get Firefox for iOS or Android" spam that it keeps opening below the URL bar?
