aysee: Well, I do know that some sites use JS for displaying images and if you block it, they often dont display anything (others at least fall back to a static image (without features such as interactive zooming), as does Amazon, if I remember correctly)
But, as it stands, ebay doesnt seem to be one of these sites
I just went there for trying it (Im usually not there), unblocked nothing and still, I could see the images (although the formatting is either somewhat messed up for all people without JS, or its this annoying display bug again)
aysee
i tried without ublock (pretty much my only addon) and in private browsing and had the same issue
Philias
Hm, its NoScript here
What were you referring to by the term 'sup images'?
Maybe this kind is not visible here, too
aysee
typo. the search results are the only images which arent loading
everything else is fine

kxb901
i wish there was some kind of community whitelist you could import into noscript that allowed just barely enough to get the basic content, like for an essay or article on the page
without the other junk
but i guess there are too many websites for that to be reality
Philias
ayaka: Sorry, failure on my side, I didnt notice my client had disconnected ...
Well, if its just the search results, it may very well be a problem with JS
Ok ... Searching for "Test" turns up only pregnancy tests and what seems to be vinyl test presses and almost nothing else all the way down :D
Anyways, while there is an annoying overlay nagging one to turn on JS (one cant even dismiss it in any way short of editing the page), I do see the images
Ahrotahntee
anybody here familiar with SSL and Client Certificate authentication? I'm getting a sec_error_output_len error when attempting to use a client certificate to authenticate with a web server
it works when I'm not authenticating with a certificate (optional_no_ca)
Nomenclatura
Ok, why why why is Firefox always opening zstuff with wine instead of xdg- ?
b0at
because wine is aggressive at adding mimetype handlers for no reason
Nomenclatura
but everything else follows xdg.
except firefox
Dragonfly6-7
minutes ago, my browser stopped being able to locate any external server.
Any ideas as to what may have gone wrong?
veek

frigging youtube plays at too high a res.. how do i lower it(already did the website preferences option thingy) and tried 2 plugins (linux box)
absklb
when i embed youtube videos how to force firefox to use html5?
Cork
absklb: you don't force the browser, you force the page
absklb: and youtube use html5 by default now days
so if you have the needed codecs installed in the system it should work
(youtube use h264 and firefox can't ship with those cause of the patents)
absklb
Cork: I need a "codec" for html5?
Cork
absklb: well when ppl say "html5" they normally mean playing video in a <video> tag
and if the video can play depends on what codec the server use
and youtube uses h264
absklb
ok
Cork
absklb: if you want the full response, html5 is a completely meaningless word
absklb
then what shall I use instead of HTML5? and why its meaningless
Cork
asking about html5 is not saying anything to the one answering
absklb: "why can't firefox play h264 video"
or "why can't firefox play h264 video in a <video> tag" <-- the most correct question
absklb
I tought its a general consensus to use HTML5 in regarding "playing web videos" when we are in age to ban Flash. I dont want flash means I want HTML5.
Cork
html5 to days means codecs, video, ajax, some new html tags, canvas, javascript, css animation, css3 features, social integration, web apps...
absklb
yeah
Cork
it is a short for "every thing new and shiny developed since 2005"
so it is impossible to get a meaning from it

absklb
I dont agree. But I got what you are saying.
Cork
absklb: no playing videos without flash is how YOUTUBE sees the meaning
absklb
and I was asking about youtube + firefox only.
Cork
that that is the core of the problem, it is a marketing word
absklb
since I use firefox.
Cork
it has absolutely no technical meaning
absklb
but anyhow we are not discussing some technical topic.
Cork
absklb: well some of youtubes "html5" videos use webm (vp9) and those works fine out of the box for firefox
as that codec doesn't have patents
absklb: anyway, to fix the problem; what os are you running?
absklb
ubuntu. and I am installing the codecs now!
Cork
absklb: on linux you need to install a compatible gstreamer version
you will find what version if you check about:buildconfig
(search for gstreamer=)
absklb
yeah. actually did not installed all this before because its office laptop but now I need to test videos for office website only.
Cork
ya, with a bit of hope the alliance for open media will give us a way to not have to relay on h264
cause the way things are right now is a real mess
not much better then flash was
Peng
Instead we'll rely on... H.265!
No, wait
absklb
:-)
Cork
Peng: noone wants to use h265 cause of the patent pricing model
that is why the alliance was created
absklb
why not allince to create something open source?
free of cost
Cork
absklb: it is
the aliance for open media is there to colaborate about the free codecs already on the way
absklb
h264 is open source?
oh that great.
Cork
and most important research how to avoid the patents
absklb: open source != patent free
it just means you can compile a copy you are not allowed to use
absklb
what what what?
whatsthe point of patented open source?
Cork
absklb: the patent means you are not allowed to make something that do the same thing
if the software is open source has no effect on it
it isn't like copyright
it affects anything doing a similar thing
absklb
ok.
Cork
so the MPEG LA group is the one controling the patents
and the opensource version is one for ffmpeg and one from cisco
the ffmpeg version isn't free to use, but as long as you are a small player it "should be fine"
the cisco version you have to download the binary blob from them to get the protection
absklb
so which org is actually working towards real open source codec and which is that codec?
