firefox gets slow for me when I'm trying to scroll down through a bunch of ebay listings, for example
I figured it was a memory thing
doubled my memory, still gets slow
it's not a cpu thing
my cpu usage only went to 19% tops while trying to scroll down the page
waressearcher2
what if its ebay thing ?
clockers
I would presume it to be a firefox and ebay thing
waressearcher2
try "lynx" if its normal here then its firefox issue

clockers
lol, text based browser
how about edge, explorer, chrome?
waressearcher2
or try to change user-agent to chrome or opera and check if there is a difference
clockers
user-agent?
waressearcher2
sometimes websites change their behaviour and page content depending on webbrowser
clockers
ah
waressearcher2
so they can use some stuff that makes specifically firefox slower than others
clockers
this is amusing
explorer is silky smooth on ebay
edge is... closer to the firefox side of things. It scrolls much faster though so it's harder to compare
I don't have chrome installed. I don't like the browser... not sure why. I think it feels to minimalistic for my tastes or something
to - too
explorer this fastest, sheesh. I guess that might be what the devs focused on
this - the
yeah, edge is a good deal faster too - it just scrolls like 5x faster
ebay is a contrarian.
omg, dudes, chrome is kicking your ass
in terms of usage
grammar_nazi
Vigdis: what os are you running?
clockers
it sucks almost as much as firefox at ebay
taiga
hello. um.. sometimes, when the ram usage of my firefox for windows reaches about 2GB, it hangs. what gives? is there any other good browser maybe? i don't like internet explorer--it has no adblock
please help

does anyone know of any way to diagnose xpi install failures when it just gives the generic "appears to be corrupt" message?
grammar_nazi
Vigdis: so, whether or not protocols are handled by the browser is determined by whether or not they're exposed, by adding the rule network.protocol-handler.expose.ftp and setting it to false, ftp.example.com shouldn't redirect. If you use ftp for things in firefox this might be a problem. Additionally it supposedly doesn't work on windows according to this article
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Network.protocol-handler.expose.%28protocol%29
taiga
there should really be an addon that warns me that firefox is about to hang so that i can close some tabs before that happens or something
waressearcher2
taiga: that comes with experience, sometimes you just know that its about to hang
taiga
i guess. it really sucks tho, at least chromium didn't hang on me. then again, the rendering sucked there and some web videos didn't load
waressearcher2
that happened with me alot when I was using opera on old PC with 400Mb RAM and when I restart opera all tabs even if its dozens of them they are all were reopened with all content saved so can't firefox do the same ? like reopen tabs from the backups from harddrive ?
taiga
reopening tabs is alright with me but downloads fail and webchat fails too

AlexPortable
waressearcher2: thats possible
normally firefox would ask you what you want to do once you close it

hi I got my firefox (windows) set to warn me for updates but not auto-install them. Now I found out there is a new version out but my firefox doesnt yet notify me of it. What determines when this notifying starts to happen ?
auscompgeek
when firefox decides to check for a new version
maicod
what is the interval?
if I go to About it shows there's a new version but I don't get notifications yet
auscompgeek
you've opened the about dialog and saw the update, you won't get notifications about it for a while :P
maicod
I only did that After I found out there was a new update
I see now: Stable checks for updates every 172800 seconds (48 hours)
but I could alter app.update.interval right :)
or app.update.promptWaitTime :)

grammar_nazi: I'm on OpenBSD but it doesn't work, I tried again this morning
Cork
Vigdis: the url bar doesn't keep the protocol
so it guesses at what protocol should be used
and when it sees ftp. is sets ftp:// infront
the only way to get away from that is to change the url
Vigdis
Cork: I know, and I don't want this behaviour
Cork
you can't get away from it
Vigdis
that's sad
Cork
http://ftp.example.com is the same as writing ftp.example.com
the browser never sees http://
it happened when they implemented the url trimming google triggered
where they don't display the protocol

In firefox, is there no way to see from which IP a page was loaded?
oh, i see it. clicking on the request in the network tab.
alastairp
hi. does padenot come in here?
b0at
if that's somebody connected with mozilla, you'd more likely find them on irc.mozilla.org
alastairp
ok, thanks
AlexPortable
How can I watch youtube videos without firefox rendering stopping because cache is full? I get black pages and undrawn pages
auscompgeek
AlexPortable: how are you so sure it's to do with cache?
AlexPortable

doesnt happens when cache is not full
eylith
Hi, I would like to have informations about the firefox dev, I hope I'm at the right place
How is firefox doing to use x86 plugins (like pdf) in a x64 build ?
b0at
irc.mozilla.org has more developers
eylith
thanks
b0at
plugins have to match the architecture of the browser. but firefox ships with an internal javascript-based pdf viewer.
eylith
b0at: pdf.js, found it
b0at: thank you, very helpfull
thenewone
Hi guys
there is a problem with firefox flashplyer ?
Cork
eylith: the plugin has to be the same arch
eylith: you get a really nasy overflow risk if you mix them
*nasty
eylith
Cork: I see things like nspluginwrapper for linux, I was looking for solutions
Cork
eylith: there are 64bit for basically all plugins in linux
eylith
Cork: I building a Qt app for x86 msvc2010 and I couldn't get the PDF NPAPI plugin working
