hi
i downloaded ff4 (for linux)
when i go to the folder and want to start it, it starts my ff3
rjohnson19
serenity: close ff3 first.
serenity
ah, thanks
slashy
I have trouble running firefox in Mandriva
I get this error
Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.2.6 and 1.9.2.6.

Hey, using 4.0 B1, is there any way to make tools --> adons a window again?
gavin
no
well, yes
you could write an addon that does that
somewhat non-trivial
enthdegree
for some reason colors donut display properly on firefox 3.6
RandomTime
write an addon to change the addons tab to a window. how meta
Assuming i have no FireFox coding experence, would this be easy?
gavin
no

RandomTime
bah
I suppose it's not an often looked at window/tab
enthdegree
jhttp://imgur.com/N0v8U.png are these folders purplish on your screens?
Download it and save it and then open it with feh or PhotoViewer or something.
They're not the correct colors in my browser window
RandomTime
same colour on irfanview as they are in FF

new ff4b1 looks great. only question is pertaining to the new menus. i can't find some stuff i was used to. where is private browsing?
and where is the page status or page info or whatever it was called
where you can see elements on the page
moblin_
hi, will 4.0b1 not be localised?
rjohnson19
nsgn: try pressing Alt. Page Info hasn't changed and should still be in the right click context menu.
nsgn
rjohnson19, i feel like an idiot
thanks :). that's evertything i wanted. in this case i actually now love the new interface
moblin_
according to the wiki it should be localised "in 10-15 languages". is there usually a delay of a few hours until these hit?
rjohnson19
A lot of people don't know Alt to show a hidden menu bar. Its an IE convention originally I believe.
nsgn
i wish the firefox menu was a bit more graphical. if they were going to take a note from microsoft on this UI element they should probably have gone all the way, though
well i'm a software support technician who tells people that for IE all day so..i'm just an idiot
but to that end my customers are really enjoying the graphical simplicity of the new unified menus at the top left of microsoft software. is this planned for FF4 to have dropping out of the firefox button or will it remain the rather unmatched standard dropdown menu?
rjohnson19
I don't think its going to be like Office 2010, although I haven't seen any mockups
amabo
i just downloaded the 4.0 beta on ubuntu but have no idea how to install it over the default 3.6 installation. any help?
jhalogen
Hello. My name is Jacob Kozinn and i am researching an infographic for GOOD magazine. Would anyone be interested in providing some technical info on what versions Firefox started supporting certain features?
nsgn
rjohnson19, it's implemented in many standard Windows 7 applications too
i dont think it should be done overkill, but i think it would be nice. particularly for touch based users..like myself. on a tablet it's really hard to hit little menu items with your fingers, but those new microsoft menus are awesome for fingers
amabo, probably a better question for the guys in #ubuntu
i had to deal with that in the past on a previous ff release. ubuntu acts odd with builds of ff not originally supported by the release you're running
amabo
i just downloaded the 4.0 beta on ubuntu but have no idea how to install it over the default 3.6 installation. any help?
nsgn
amabo, ^^ i answered you above
it was something specific the ubuntu guys walked me through. it isnt a mozilla problem

On Windows 7 Firefox 4 displays every tab on the taskbar when FF is consolidated, instead of every window. This is very annoying when I'm trying to find another window.
nsgn
RandomTime, you're saying when you mouse over your one icon on the task bar for FF it shows you all the tabs rather than just the windows?
RandomTime
nsgn: yes
nsgn
this is by design. it was a feature in FF3 though if i remember properly i had to enable it manually. it is probably just a default now

RandomTime
any way to turn it off (about:config)?
nsgn
meaning you can probably change it back if it bugs you. it's how browsers should behave win Win7 according to microsoft
in FF3 it was disabled by default and able to be turned on in about:config
perhaps you can do the opposite in FF4
RandomTime
I normally use a fair few tabs (about 50-100), so yes, would be nice. What value do I need to change?
nsgn
google for enabling it in FF3 and then change the setting the opposite way in 4. let me know if it works. i'm curious
RandomTime
ok
nsgn
i had forgotten i manually set it in 3 so when i installed 4 i just thought all was normal
RandomTime
browser.taskbar.previews.enable
nsgn
nice. and in 4 you find it to be on by default in about:config?
RandomTime
yup
nsgn
turn it off and relaunch the browser
RandomTime
Do I need to restart?
Aah, ok
nsgn
....
that wasnt the browser
RandomTime
sorted, brilliant
I think that's all the annoyances in FF4 that i've had, I'll use it as my main browser for a while
nsgn
awesome
remember to tap Alt for the full menus ;)
that got me from the get go for a moment
RandomTime, for closure, the change was made in FF4 to match IE8, which does this by default
RandomTime
Oh, yeah - that was the first thing I did, put the real menu back
and install tree style tab
nsgn
i enjoy the real menu hiding itself (also an IE8 thing). it's just an Alt away
but i'm pretty minimalist in my visual preferences
RandomTime
bah, no rocker gestures extentions have been updated.
EntityReborn
>.< anyone here use the illimitux plugin?
jbc
um... so I just installed 4.0b1 osx, and the tabs are still under the toolbar...
aha, found it.

hello :)
small firefox4 bug on windows vista

rendering crash
on the bar
rjohnson19
Funny, I just saw that. I think it has to do with losing aero, which is a known bug.
a7x
fine
:)

hello, I'm using firefox namoroka with user agent changed to Firefox/3.6, however I'm unable to use the tag function in facebook status messages, anyone else experiencing this?
anyone?
RandomTime
I don't think that's a common implementation, so I don't know if you'll get anyone who would know to reply
amitprakash
hi.. for some reason ctrl+enter behavior isnt working on FF ... version 3.6.6 O/S windows 7
any resolution
PiousMinion
Is there a way to specify which GTK theme firefox uses?
Cork
PiousMinion: firefox should grab that from your gconf file
in other words, firefox should follow your theme selection
PiousMinion
Cork: I want to use a different GTK theme for firefox than the rest of the applications on my system.
Cork
PiousMinion: i don't think there is a way, except posibly starting firefox as another user profile
isn't even sure that would work)
PiousMinion
The thing is I use a dark theme and firefox styles form elements using the gtk theme which looks like crap on 90% of the pages I view.
IMHO elements on a page should not be affected by gtk.
Cork
they should
its even specified in w3c's spec that they should
PiousMinion
The way a page looks should be decided by the designer. There is no way for a designer to know what GTK styles a user has or how to style around them.
W3C mentions GTK ?
Cork
no they mention system native
auscompgeek
and GTK = system native
Cork
and that implies following gtk theme
PiousMinion
I get that. Don't agree with the, but that doesn't do me much good. :/
them*
Cork
i don't like it eather, it makes life a pain when you want to design a form
but thats still a fact :/
PiousMinion
W3C is apparently biased towards light colored native themes. :(
I've tried all the GTK_RC_FILEs=some-theme as sugegsted on various sites, but no luck. it gets ignored.
Speiros
Hello. Can someone help me please to make a signature block. I have an image, and some writing I want in the block. I seem to be able to do one or the other.
Cork
PiousMinion: you can overide the design through your cssContent/cssChrome.css
PiousMinion
Speiros: how does this pertain to firefox?
Speiros
Firefox thunderbird
PiousMinion
Speiros: you mean mozilla thunderbird?
Speiros
The thunderbird link comes back here.
Yeah.lol
Cork
Speiros: => #thunderbird @ irc.mozilla.org
Speiros
Thanks PiousMinion and Cork

i just got this error while making some js code -
Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004003 (NS_ERROR_INVALID_POINTER) [nsIDOMHTMLElement.replaceChild]" nsresult: "0x80004003 (NS_ERROR_INVALID_POINTER)" location: "JS frame :: https://127.0.0.1/client/b231232a7152f714f66cb679e9c97f9a/jsmodule/irc :: anonymous :: line 32" data: no
i take it that's an internal firefox error and not mine?
Cork
no
forrestv
invalid pointer?
Cork
your trying to append your code to an anonymous objet
*object
so make sure you have the correct dom object selected before you try to append to it
s/append/replace/
PiousMinion
Cork: "cssChrome.css" doesn't exist on my filesystem. Ideas?
Cork
PiousMinion: ~/.mozilla/firefox/<your firefox profile>.default/chrome
PiousMinion
Cork: 2 files in there. "userChrome-example.css" and "userContent-example.css"
Cork
exactly
forrestv
Cork, ah, okay, fixed it, i was doing element.replaceChild(new_element, null);
Cork
ah, user, not css :s
PiousMinion
Cork: :P
Cork
forgot the name
forrestv
the invalid pointer for something like that is just weird and threw me off
PiousMinion
thanks. :)
Cork
np
forrestv
thanks!
PiousMinion
Cork: added this, but had no effect. input { background-color: rgb(200, 255, 220) !important;
}
I of course removed the word "example" from the filename. :P
Berzerker
anyone using Firefox 4 beta?
on OS X
LaraNYC
yes
Cork
PiousMinion: sorry got busy
you added that to userChrome or userContent?
amitprakash
is there something wrong with sync 1.4? i dont see a sync icon in status bar or any indication if its syncing at all
PiousMinion
Cork: userChrome
Cork
PiousMinion: you need the correct name scope then
PiousMinion: @namespace url("
PiousMinion
Cork: I've had that in there. Was in the example so I left it.
OmegaSadness
hi
Cork
PiousMinion: input is used in content, not the chrome, so i guess that might be why
PiousMinion
Cork: says I should be able to do it here. --> http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html#usercss
..but doesn't work.
OmegaSadness
How to import my Opera controls (e.q. Ctrl+Ret for auto-login) into Firefox? I just can't use Firefox without this feature (old "autofilling" isn't quite correct for me)
ctrl+ret does the autologin in Opera (I just go to Gmail, hit ctrl+ret and I'm logged in).
Cork
PiousMinion: i'm not sure that one is up to date
OmegaSadness
Opera started bugging up for me, but I can't use any other browser without this feature (and some other more convenient Opera features)
Cork
PiousMinion: try adding it in userContent instead, and see if that helps
amitprakash
Cork, you're everywhere :D
Cork
you only know half of it :D
amitprakash
heh
Cork
(even less then half actually)
amitprakash
:O.. omnipresent
OmegaSadness
So, does anyone know of a FF plugin to import Opera key combinations? Those like me cannot relearn once they find one browser comfortable.
Cork
OmegaSadness: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13118/
PiousMinion
OmegaSadness: you like Opera. why not use it?
Cork
its an extension not a plugin though
amitprakash
whats Opera
OmegaSadness
it started bugging for me, and can't fix it
amitprakash
is it like IE?
OmegaSadness
Opera started bugging up toolbar fonts, and making other double-crap things
dang, keysnail is for coders, not just command ID > press key
everything to thwart non-unix people from making Firefox act closer to Opera
or did Opera pay FSF/Mozilla to prevent people from putting comfy Opera controls into Firefox? I bet that's the last chance for Opera to somehow exist in the warfare of web-browsers
(Action) is ready to explode
(Action) sees no use in Chrome/IE/Safari, FF and Opera are the only good browsers
and yet there's no FF plugin to look like Opera! dang it hang it
fbred_
I'm having a problem with firefox, it says "the url is not valid and cannot be loaded" when I'm trying to connect to a https with a valid certificate validated by a microsoft CA
before the certificate was signed, it worked fine.. does anybody know about this?
OmegaSadness
fbred, does it redirect to a wrong-parsed URL?
Try replacing any URL-incompatible characters with their %## escapes.
fbred_
no, there is no redirection (unless the certificate-stuff does something funny)
its as simple as http://example.com/index.html
OmegaSadness
certificate stuff may have non-URL chars. Try to put in an URL parser to work on all redirects
fbred_
do you know a good extension for that?
"url parser" probably :)
OmegaSadness
you need a URL parser that will process not only your input, but also all the crappy checkups of certificates.
MS people are unreliable, see how many crappy pieces of code every Windows build has
fbred_
belive me, I know
OmegaSadness
that's probably an UNcertificate that makes the site not visitable without a browser signature
