is this channel good for asking development related questions or....?
Gryllida
development of what?
wirepair
like speaking with developers, i'm curious how mozilla automates testing/drivign of firefox
driving rather
Gryllida
maybe these two answer your question a bit: http://quality.mozilla.org/teams/firefox/ and https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Developer_Guide
Normandy
How can I make firefox use the RAM reasonably?
bobo123
Normandy: I guess you have to refine that question a bit :-D
Normandy
bobo123: I think my question was very clear.Anyway, my browser consumes 300 megabytes of RAM and I think it's not a reasonable amount.I suspect memory leakage
Tila
on what is your deep-thought based?
Normandy
Tila: For God's sake, I'm searching for a solution to my problem.

bobo123
Normandy: I'm not an export on firefox (I'm just another user) but I think firefox consumes as much memory that there is available to cache earlier visited pages, in case you want to look at them again (quicker)
Normandy
bobo123: Is there a way to stop that caching feature?
bobo123
so it is not 'leaking' it just asumes that is running alone on your computer. A bad asumption of course but anyway.
there is probably some settings in about:config that can limit the amount of memory it can grab for itself. or soem setting of how much it must leave for other applications you might run
Normandy
Yeah
bobo123
somethin *I* would like especially on my older computers with 300MB memory or so, is if it only cached the pictures on the previous page and drop all the earlierer ones, but cached the html-text for all pages (perhaps compressed)

bobo123
(so if I go back more than one step, it have to get the images again but not the pages)
brlancer
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers
check both of those pages and adjust in about:config to your preference
bobo123
nice
Normandy
Ok, thanks brlancer

hello, does anyone use Mozilla Weave? how is it these days?
sdwilsh
it is awesome
also, it's called Firefox Sync now
nobarking
sdwilsh: is it?
going to try it
sdwilsh
I've been using it for a while now
it's going to be a part of Firefox 4 too
(that is how stable it is)
nobarking
nice, thats great news!
SirTopHat
when I go into a tinychat, all of my programs stop accepting input
I can't use alt-tab
no programs can bei nteracted with at all
but I can get the task manager with ctrl-alt-del
but I can't interact with it.
it just did it again, when I was just in google
google by itself
nobody has any ideas here?
I think I've isolated this problem to firefox
while I'm using firefox, sometimes my system will stop accepting input to programs.
I can't interact with anthing at all, all I can do it make task manager/start menu/etc appear with key combos.
But then I can't do anything with those either.
f00li5h
is there a way to make http passwords over https sensible?
FF seems keen on asking me them all the time
is there a keychain type thingy I can use to make it not ask me so often?
(since FF seems keen on restarting all the sodding time)
seidos
what language is firefox programmed in?
SirTopHat
look at the source and find out
brlancer
seidos: "that depends"
no offense, but if you are willing to look it up for yourself, you probably shouldn't care :)

seidos
I thought asking was a "kind of" looking up

how do you setup xchat to open irc:// links in firefox?
FishFace
xxu, it should already. But I found out that Firefox has to already be open. It hasn't (for me anyway) launched the browser from a cold start.
Although I don't see man irc:// links to be honest with you

Hi
I am using a PHP script and got a massive error in Firefox .
I can upload one image with the script just fine. More than one causes errors.
Ilya

Ilya

Good $tz_greeting, everyone. I'm having a small issue with a ff 3.6.3 -> 3.6.4 update on XP (sp3); it keeps kicking back an error saying "The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again." and it seems to go into a loop of 6-7 iterations of this before it finally starts up FF,
without, of course, the update being applied. I've done some research and gone through the steps found to no avail; safe-mode; removing the update files, etc.
Anyone able to shed some light on this and/or suggest a solution?
Worse case, can I safely download a full copy of 3.6.4 and install it over the 3.6.3 installed now and have all my addons, configuration settings, bookmarks, etc remain in place?
kbrosnan
Gerdesas: any other users logged in to the computer?
FishFace
I say fresh install should leave you with everything in tact
kbrosnan
installing won't touch your profile where firefox stores all the personal data
Gerdesas
kbrosnan: only service accounts; nothing that would be touching FF or any of it's resources. I should also mention that I temporarily disabled all antivir, teatimer, etc.
kbrosnan
uninstalling as long as you don't tick the box that says 'remove my personal settings' (or similar wording) will leave the profile intact as well
Gerdesas
noted. thank you. one more question if I may? what about existing tabs I have open? I have roughly 50 open at the time and would like to preserve those for after the update; will the reinstall leave that data intact also?
kbrosnan
it should
Gerdesas
excellent :)
thank you for the great and fast support :)

I was just looking around for similar. Thank you for the time saver.

Why it's possible to crash friefox by opening too many tabs, shouldn't there be a limit of tabs you can open?
kbrosnan
you can open a lot more copies of http://www.example.com then http://www.youtube.com , setting an artifical limit would only serve to fustrate users
Shoozza
firefox crashed when once when it used 1570k and once it used 1832k of RAM
kbrosnan
havev crash ids? about:crashes in the address bar?
Shoozza
nope
not added
the first crash was an error report to microsoft window the second a runtime error
anyone else gets weird rendering behavior at the end of the http://support.mozilla.com/de/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting page?

Hey. Does Firefox supply waveform data to Javascript?
or something of that sort?

Where does Firefox store LSO's in Ubuntu Linux?
l0nwlf
6:09:05 l0nwlf-MBP:/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS$ ./firefox-bin -remote 'http://www.google.com'
does not work in OSX
while it work on windows. Why so ?

Hi ppl. Firefox takes about 30-50 seconds to startup and processmonitor does not give any clues on where is it stuck. Is there any kind of verbose log or something I can set to see what's Firefox doind during startup? (windows 2003 R2)
Quentin
hey there
I'm trying to cross compile firefox, but I'm getting some troubles with xulrunner. All dependencies are OK (even nspr/nss) but xulrunner refuses to compile, the problem comes from the fact that it cross compiles nsinstall too instead of just compiling it...
Any clue on how I could do that ?
ok I got rid of this nsinstall problem... that was a gentoo problem which was setting CC to my cross compiler before calling make
But now I get a problem in nanojit/CodeAlloc.cpp, where there is x86 asm in it :s I hope this is just a macro not well defined..
FishFace
Oh boy! New version 'thing' kicked in

what's the best ff addon to share comments on specific urls? (this house sucks! don't bother calling the real-estate agent)

quick question: does firefox use the DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf to perform DNS resolution?
wirepair
that should depend on /etc/nsswitch.conf
but unless you tinkered with it, it should be using the nameservers from /etc/resolv.conf
danielsh
i.e., it just uses the system defaults?
thanks

hi folks ... i have FF 3.5.6 (Linux) and occasionally websites want to automatically install plugins and the yellow bar appears at the top of the page (in FF) ... this really slows down my browser and demands a bit of resources ... any way to disable this prompt?
kbrosnan
tlhiv_laptop
kbrosnan: does this also stop the "computing" that initiates the yellow bar?
kbrosnan
no idea

Mornin'. The new release this morning got me thinking about -moz-box-shadow. I've seen it reported in a few places. In Firefox -moz-box-shadow makes my page lag like crazy. Javascript is slow - button clicks are slow, etc. Is there any fix planned for that?
t0nic[w]
is there any sort of add-on or greasemonkey script that will test all the links on a page and highlight the bad ones?
I looked around a bit but saw nothing
almost like a stripped down fasterfox that just hits each link and highlights& what is it, 4xx errors?
how long are dns entries cached in ff?

How do I make my signature block on Thunderbird include an image, as well as a link to my website? I can save an image, or I can add data.

wirepair: btw, that nsswitch.conf may be useful... originally I'm investigating a "DNS resolution is slow" issue, so that file may be relevant
