cwarner
Is there a reason firefox doesn't support tiff images?
LinuxDolt
it doesn't?
(Action) never noticed, so it must not matter much that it doesn't
cwarner
LinuxDolt: it doesn't
I guess it's not a big deal but Safari and Chrome support Tiff natively
rjohnson19
cwarner: the jusitification in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160261 is its not a good web format because it can't be streamed, and increases the attack surface of the browser
cwarner
I'm a little confused as to this security threat..
rjohnson19
More code (a tiff lib) = more risk of a security exploit, basically.
cwarner
yeah well that goes for anything
is there any other valid reason not to support tiff beyond having more code?
yeah it's old, yeah one needs to wait until fill binary is down.. but umm so far those aren't really good reasons I think to not support it
all these "for the sake of web" seems rather silly.. people aren't going to start using tiff explicitly
Lunix
hmm
LinuxDolt
cwarner: just download the file locally and use a local viewer... big deal.
cwarner: or use a browser that supports the format. no one's forcing you to use firefox

cwarner
LinuxDolt: that is so true.. I'll just tell my user base to use Safari or Chrome to view images and to forego Firefox until further notice
I think Chrome is getting some decent enough extensions at this point anyway.. no sense is fighting with the politics
LinuxDolt
cwarner: wait... you're using tiff files on your own site? why the frick?
(Action) cannot comprehend why anyone making new content would want to use anything other than png. greyscale png is better than greyscale gif, color png is better than color jpeg. indexed png is better than indexed gif...
and tiff of all things...
that's just a horrible format all around
Crash1hd
hey all can anyone tell me why I would want / need a contents.rdf file in my locale folder? (doing a tutorial that is showing to add one, but after looking at a bunch of already exsisting extensions none of them have one?) thoughts?
rryouumaa
in noscript, can you enable something for just one tab?
coolkehon
firefox has been crashing like a bi**h lately, any ideas why?
drinkycrow
i really need help, if i don't have an answer tomorrow, i have to migrate my entire office to outlook
kbrosnan
check about:crashes for any crash ids
#thunderbird is on irc.mozilla.org
drinkycrow
thanks
coolkehon
kbrosnan: what
drinkycrow
i joined #mozilla and it evidently redirected me here
kbrosnan
coolkehon: type about:crashes in the address bar
coolkehon
i did and it gave me 'The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded.'
kbrosnan
drinkycrow: irc.mozilla.org is a different server, they also do support at http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging
coolkehon: *nix then I presume
drinkycrow
thanks kbrosnan
kbrosnan
coolkehon: distro?
coolkehon
archlinux kbrosnan
kbrosnan
coolkehon: 686, 86_x64?
coolkehon
x86_64
kbrosnan
coolkehon: either get the distro's debug packages and use gdb to get a stack trace. or try the x86_64 build at ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-1.9.2/ and see if you can reproduce the crash
coolkehon
meh i'll just let it keep crashing and restoring the session or just install it from aur

kbrosnan
that will have about:crashes functionallity that can help in diagnosing the crash
coolkehon
ok i'll try it another day though
drinkycrow
i'm getting passed up by things like Password problem - "Login failed"
when the answer is either the password is wrong or your connection is broken

hi, is there a plugin like hammerhead that can measure the build up speed of a huge quantity of pages and maybe import/export the tests?
SuspectZero
quick question
i have firefox on windows 7, was wondering if there is a download manager that has speed limit. currently i use downthemall but it eats up all my bandwidth since theres no speed limiter on it :(
atleast none that i could find
any help would be greatly appreciated
kbrosnan
SuspectZero: i've never looked for download mangers, sorry. I suspect wikipedia might have a chart of features of common download managers.
SuspectZero
kbrosnan, kk cool, i'll check it out :)
kbrosnan
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_download_managers
SuspectZero
thanks for the link
kbrosnan, found a great dl manager that should do the trick
appreciate the help
intok
had a lightning storm that took out the dsl, now I'm getting weirdness in firefox in that most pages keep timing out, yet every other net using app has no trouble with ping, timeout or bandwidth.

Avicennasis
Hello! Anyone have any idea why an image would appear washed out in firefox but other browsers don't?
Cork
link?
kbrosnan
good chance your monitor has a bad color profile
Avicennasis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Command_and_control_center_Port_of_Long_Beach_CA.jpg
The thumbnail looks fine (at the bottom) but the image itself looks washed out. IE7 and Opera don't have this problem on the same PC.
Cork
Avicennasis: that image is saved with a color profile
thats why you get the difference
Avicennasis: the thumbnail is generated server side http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/ab/Command_and_control_center_Port_of_Long_Beach_CA.jpg/120px-Command_and_control_center_Port_of_Long_Beach_CA.jpg
and it is stripped of the color profile
Avicennasis
Ah. Is Firefox the only browser that reads color profiles? And perhaps the more important question, although not directly Firefox-related: How would one correct this?
Cork
ya
Avicennasis: resave the image without color profile, or fix your color profile in your system
Avicennasis
Cork: thanks for all the help. I appreciate it. :)
Cork
or the third option, turn off firefox color profile system
all of them works
Avicennasis
Eh. My main concern is fixing this for all Wikipedia readers, so the personal-fix options won't help with that. I'll have to strip the image of the color profile.
Cork
ok, then resave the image without color profile
(photoshop calls it srgb)
Avicennasis
Any idea what GIMP would call it?
Cork
gimp can't do it
it always saved color profile
you have to use a separat program to ripp out the profile
Avicennasis
Ah. I don't have a copy of Photoshop. I'll have to reach out to some photoshup-gurus for that, then.
Cork
Avicennasis: i think you could do it with http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
(no garantee though)
(its called ICC Profile there)
Avicennasis
Awesome, thanks again. If it doesn't work, we have a whole team of image voluteers at Wikimedia Commons, so I am sure I can get it done somehow.
kbrosnan
removing color correction from the photo is not a good soloution
Avicennasis
kbrosnan: Erm? What is, then?
zetheroo
I seem to recall in previous version of Firefox in Ubuntu that it would remember the sites I logged into - so that next time I booted up I did not have log into everywhere again ... this no longer works for some reason unknown to me
Cork
zetheroo: your resetting your cookies on restart?
zetheroo
f I shut down and leave Firefox open then next time I boot up and open FF it will start from where I left it ... Except (and this is very annoying) anything I was signed into I will have re-login.
about cookies, I am not sure
previously it would leave me logged into the sites unless I logged out of them.
Cork
zetheroo: if you reset your cookies most site will lose its login
so thats prob what you changed
zetheroo
ok ... so its a setting somewhere ... something to do with cookies
Cork
tools > options > privacy > "User custome setttings for history > Clear history when firefox closes > Cookies
if you have the "Clear history when firefox closes" checked and cookies checked inside its settings, you will lose your login
zetheroo
in FF prefs under the Privacy tab there is "Accept cookies from sites" and "Accept third-party cookies" ... both are ticked (enabled) ... and in the "Keep until" drop down menu its set to "I close Firefox"
Cork
ok, thats why
you expiers all your cookies when you restart firefox
zetheroo
"Clear history when FF closes" is not ticked (disabled)
Cork
ya, the other one gives the same effect
zetheroo
oh ok
so I should "Keep until" ... they expire?
Cork
ya
zetheroo
cool !!!
I think that did the trick
thanks a heap
Cork
np
zetheroo
that was so annoying to have to log into every site each and every time I opened FF
Slicer88
Hello?
kbrosnan
hi?
Slicer88
kbrosnan - I'm sorry to ask but do you mind if I send you a query quick?
I just need to ask something probably simple
kbrosnan
realy would perfer to keep things in channel
Slicer88
Thats okay I don't mind asking here but it's not Firefox related
kbrosnan
ask away. wost thing i can tell you is to look somewhere else
Slicer88
I need to know how to give access to someone in a channel, and I'm not sure how to do it on this server
I've read the chanserv access help file, and while I have managed to add someone for "+votriA" I actually want them to auto op
kbrosnan
#freenode would be your best bet for an explination of server features
Slicer88
Yeah I tried that.. no response :(
Thx tho
kbrosnan
well you are on the cusp of the evening slowdown on networks that have a lot of users in the Americas, and a touch early for some parts of Europe

Cork
zezom: linux?
zezom
yeah, ubuntu
FishFace
zezom, I have it running right now. XP. FF. Flash 10.1 - sound is good
seidos
zezom, I had a problem with sound before, but I managed to get it to work. did you try #ubuntu?

fornext

firefox does not restore sessions. I can click the restore button but and it changes to grayed but nothing happens
Kano
hi, is there an option to use fullscreen by default
when i use
startx $(which firefox) kiosk -- :1
then it is not using the complete screen
-kiosk i mean
it is using only a very small area, not even enough to see the url
jwa
is there any chance this will ever be changed? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2344056/bug-firefox-css3-using-overflow-hidden-and-box-shadow
ThomasV
hello; I am trying websockets with the latest nightly build. is the handshake protocol different from what it is in chromium ?
kbrosnan
jwa: don't see the issue using the example code in the first answer
jwa
kbrosnan, wait a sec, I'll create a fiddle
kbrosnan
ThomasV: looks like it is only documented in a bug atm https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=562681
jwa
ThomasV
hmm
it would be great to have a working example
kbrosnan
jwa
oh good to know
kbrosnan
ThomasV: developer.mozilla.org will eventually but i checked and it does not have anything atm
i have to run to a doctors appointment. be around in a couple hours
ThomasV
kbrosnan: I mean, about the difference between the current protocol and protocol-75 which is now implemented
I developed code using chromium and I was hoping it would work right away with ff
perhaps I should just wait until bug 562681 is fixed
oh but it is fixed ...

Can anyone tell me why the nav element isn't supported in FireFox 3.6.3, when Mozilla claims it supports HTML5?
mmestnik
Hello, looks like the handful of idlers in #thunderbird have been AFK for more then 12hrs. I'd like to talk about the IMAP RFC with some experienced developers and also gain insight as to why TB works where other clients won't.
http://pastebin.com/NkrmkUxc <-- here is my question. It's about Deleting with an unpopulated PERMANENTFLAGS.
My understanding is that is Delete is not listed in PERMANENTFLAGS then a client should NOT expunge this flag to the server.
However I feel a handful of clients might just assume that Delete is a Permanent Flag.
BlueMaxima
Is anyone around that can help me?
franki_
hi, search a plugin for firefox that manage downloads to path i wish. e.g contolled by url or data format.
Barkhorn
hi everyone. I was wondering if i can get tabs on my ubuntu laptop to be more transparent as they are on windows (xp), so the persona is more visible. Is there some user-chrome or similar i can set to do this?
