Whenever 3.6.4 comes out: Here's to a more stable experience. :)
Question, though.
Will one crashing instance of Flash kill all running instances of Flash, or is each instance run in its own container?
kbrosnan
the former
xbskid
Boo
Azalyn
the former is best...
flash is slow as it is, you don't want 10 copies of it in memory, trust me. :|
i'll be looking forward to being able to kill -9 flash manually without having to kill firefox. :)
whenever the system gets sluggish because of flash.
kbrosnan
Azalyn: will be in a process called plugin-container

Azalyn
thanks for the tip :)
although i would have probably been able to identify it easily. it would be the one sucking up all my system resources, like a black hole.
honestly, 3.6.4 can't come soon enough, it's especially urgently needed now that adobe has screwed 64bit users.
by not patching the 64bit release, regarding that fatal vulnerability.
now we have to go back to nspluginwrapper... which can cause more problems.
there is never a better time to have plugins isolated from the browser.
to top it off, i've read that nspluginwrapper doesn't even work right with the latest flash. >.<
total mess.

hello
dbbolton
approximately how long does it usually take to clone mozilla-central with mercurial?
kbrosnan
depends on the os and your connection
dbbolton
debian testing, 2.33 ghz core2, around 150-300 KB/s
it appeared to hang on "adding file changes"
i waited for 15 minutes or so
kbrosnan
i've cloned it on Linux in 5-10 min
dbbolton
any idea what the problem could be?
kbrosnan
what version of mercurial?
dbbolton
1.5.2
ok, this time i actually got an error message: abort: connection ended unexpectedly
my connection seems fine every where else though.
e.g., IRC
kbrosnan
don't really have a better suggestion then retry
might be worth checking if hg pull -u will work
dbbolton
ok. i'm going to try from a wired machine first, to determine whether my wireless is cutting out
XDS2010

Apparently I have eight English variants installed for my spellchecking. How can I remove the seven I don't need?

Kano
hi, when will 3.6.4 out?
robotti^
when it done

Kano
i asked at linuxtag it should be out this week, or is it delayed
slackerr
hi all. i need to install ff 3.6.x on debian lenny. because no lastest ff in repository i need to install manually. 1. is there static version of ff exists, or i need compile it manually? 2. how to set up ff for not use default ff settings/plugins dir(to prevent errors with my old system ff)?
Kano
slackerr: try this script as user: http://kanotix.com/files/install-mozilla-local.sh
will give you a firefox+thunderbird icon on desktop, also installs flash
i check for 64 bit and install a newer snapshot in that case

sorry for my bad english
jelmer__
does anyone know how i can print a simple line to a console from within a firefox plugin
i am trying to debug some code under my extensions folder but alert() wont work, nor firebugs consol.print
bivo
Anyone here use Web Of Trust?
kbrosnan
jelmer__: https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Extension_Frequently_Asked_Questions#Debugging
bivo: installed it a couple times for testing, always felt a bit sluggish. though i think it is a good resource for people who don't know what is trustworthy on the web.
mesula
What are out of process plugins?
kbrosnan
mesula: a way to run plugins such as Adobe Flash player in a way that they don't crash Firefox if they crash
mesula
kbrosnan: That sounds more like a workaround than an actual feature.
kbrosnan: Would it protect me from Flash vulnerabilities?
kbrosnan
it protects you from DOS attacks based on plugins
other vulnerabilities would not be affected
mesula
Flash is so insecure.
kbrosnan
so don't use it
mesula
kbrosnan: I kind of need to for Flash based websites.
Without Flash installed, the browsing experience is lessened.
kbrosnan
That is your choice, albeit influenced by the website designers of sites you use.
mesula
Hopefully the development in Gnash and the web's shift towards open standards will make browsing more stable and secure. :)
kbrosnan: Damn those website designers. ><
Kilian]
hiho
is there anywhere a firefox reposority for debian with nightly builds ?
kbrosnan
Kilian]: mozilla only provides genericly compiled binaries in tar.gz format. you can extract them to your perfered directory and execute ./firefox from that folder
marmoute
Hello
What could cause firefox to exit with status code 1 without anything on either stdout or stderr ?
kbrosnan
not helpful, more or less just says firefox crashed
marmoute
yeah
kbrosnan
which you already know
Kilian]
kbrosnan: okay, found that already, thanks
marmoute
kbrosnan: you were speaking to Kilian] ?
kbrosnan
marmoute: you can try renaming your ~/.mozilla
marmoute: only the line that starts with his nick
Kilian]
marmoute: he did before you joined
marmoute
I fails (randomly) on : '['firefox', '-no-remote', '-CreateProfile', 'PYTEST_PROFILE_2ecd0a5b-2c49-46b9-9440-97dd53e2f8aa /tmp/tmp-QXNuz']' returned non-zero exit status 1
s/i/it/
I didn't managed to reproduce it.
I can delete my .mozilla but It's not suppose to be used.
kbrosnan: as you point it out the "return 1" not error output is not relaly helpfull
kbrosnan
marmoute: i was not aware you were doing something with profiles
marmoute
kbrosnan: sorry.
kbrosnan
unless you are running debug builds of Firefox/XULrunner and catch the crash in a debugger there is not too much to be gleaned from the crash you are hitting
marmoute
...
kbrosnan
though i guess running stock Mozilla builds might be useful as they have a built in crash reporter
marmoute
why are firefox crashing so silently ?
kbrosnan
most people are not programmers, debug builds run slower
marmoute
humm theire is a -safe-mode that are suppose to "showing a bit more debugging messages"
kbrosnan
just a slightly different startup path. using known good defaults
bivo
kbrosnan sorry, I got called away, I'm trying to find a way to make it stop reloading the page if the machine has been put on sleep, it's become a pita for use with a laptop as if I'm keeping a tab open for later reading it will try to reload it when I wake the laptop, irregardless of weather or not there is an active network it can reach.
kbrosnan
that is something that would need to be directed to the wot team, http://www.mywot.com/en/support
dagni
hello
i remember firefox was faster
now i have 13 cards
and it's slow
why ?
kbrosnan
try firefox's safe mode and/or a new profile, http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic+troubleshooting
dagni
maybe its because i use some addons and plugins ?
kbrosnan
possibly, safe mode should be a decent test for that case
dagni
let me check
choplipelipe
hi
kochii
