Hey guys, I've got a question. I have a web page where I get javascript alerts. Once I click okay it redirects me to a new page. This happens repeatedly. I would like to keep a log of each time I accept this alert but I'm at a loss for ideas. I know it's not a Firefox troubleshooting problem but I am using the browser and I thought someone might have an idea or two.
Nevermind I was able to figure out an alternative with Greasemonkey (replacing calling a modified js page on my local machine.) Thanks anyway.

Are Firefox Addons (on the official site) open-source?
(Action) can't figure out how to download the source-code
oh
It's just XML?
simple...
I'm trying to search multiple search engines in the one query. Can firefox's search bar open the {searchTerms} in multiple tabs (one for each engine)?

hi... just thought i'd mention a web design fail for firefox start page: http://www.google.com/firefox ... the background color for the window is unset, and the images lack transparency. for those of us who use non-standard window colors, this ends up looking very wonky, because the images have a white background, and, in my case, the rest of the window is a blueish off-white
anyways... i'm too tired to try to figure out where to take this observation, so yeah...

Can I define my own Searchengine with firefox?
A list is here: https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/browse/type:4/cat:all?sort=name
but what if I dont find the site with the search engine? For example, I want to define a search for my local library.

i can't get firefox started. not even in -safe-mode
and I can't kill the process but the window doesn't show up

hi. i'm trying to figure out if there's any way to send a "signal" to firefox to refresh the current page. what i mean is, i'm writing an emacs mode and i would like to be able to do this from emacs without changing the window focus.
any ideas?
Cork[home]
the simplest way would prob be to set up a script to send a key combination to firefox
damd
yeah, so how do i do that?
this would ideally be cross-platform btw
Cork[home]
i don't think there is a cross platform way
there is sendkey apps for windows, i think there is one for linux too
donno about mac
damd
okay, so that would be an external dependency...
Cork[home]
ya
well you can do it from wscript in windows, but that would still be a dependency

I have a challenging question. I have my machine set up with two xorg displays. I got the desktop portion of the lxde manager running and can start seamonky over and over from the icon on the primary monitor. But if I try to start from the second monitor, i get the "Seamonkey is already running, but is not responding." This part is the same for firefox. It has something to do with the 2...
...displays I think, it finds the process but can't find the display?

hello, Is addons can change all the interface like remove the search engine field?
Cork[home]
uh... "Can addons change everything in the interface like remove the serach engine field?"; yes they can
User_007
hello, i have a doubt, I use Squeeze AMD64, and i needed to download a 32bit firefox in order to use last flash. But it happens: http://i49.tinypic.com/4smq2v.jpg
does anyone knows why it happens?
Cork[home]
do you have any themes listed in tools > addons > themes ?
User_007
when i put themes on it doesn't change much
antoine__
go back to default?
User_007
it's the default (Linux)
kbrosnan
what window manager?
antoine__
i use a debian unstable with iceweasel and the icons are differents from your screen
jshanab
Can anyone tell me why I can start firefox multiple times on one display, but not one on each display.
ie DISPLAY=":0.0" firefox & and then DISPLAY=":0.1" firefox & gives "already started and not responding error"
User_007
antoine__, i get a different theme on gnome of course. :D
kbrosnan
jshanab: you'll need -no-remote
jshanab
kbrosnan: Is that a command line option? I still get the same error
Cork[home]
jshanab: when you start firefox in multible displays, you start the program multible times, for that you need multible profiles, and the argument -no-remote
kbrosnan
you'll need -P as well
jshanab
kbrosnan. ok trying that.
kbrosnan: How do I determine my profile names I need for the -P
kbrosnan: Same error with "DISPLAY=":0.1" -P default -no-remote firefox &"
Cork[home]
jshanab: its the name listed in -ProfileManager, or the part after the dot in the folder name
kbrosnan
you can't reuse a currently in use profile
Cork[home]
jshanab: and its firefox -P default -no-remote, not the other way around
jshanab
kbrosnan: How does it work that I can start multiple copies off same profile on 1 display? It "gets a ref to existing" correct ?
Cork[home]
only one instance of firefox is started
jshanab
Cork[home]: Makes sense. Typical singleton pattern. Now why does this not work on the second monitor which is a different display. It finds the process but cannot use it.
Cork[home]
jshanab: it you set the display before you start any firefox, it should work just fine
that is: killall firefox-bin; killall firefox; export DISPLAY=:0.1; firefox &
jshanab
Cork[home]: First one works, second one fails. I am trying to start a browser on each display
Cork[home]
jshanab: thats what i'm trying to tell you, it only works for one display
when you try to start a second display, a second instance of firefox is needed
(same for any program)
jshanab
Cork: It is like it detects the instance but then cannot get the ref ie "already started but not responding" error
Cork[home]
no
when you start multible windows on the same display, firefox starts this in the same process
one process can't access multible displays though
so a second instance of firefox is needed
firefox can't access the same profile from more then one process at a time
(database locks and so on)
jshanab
Cork: ok. Thanks. I'll just make two profiles
Cork: But that means all the bookmarks and such are seperate? yuck
Cork[home]
ya
jshanab
Cork[home]: Are there any plans of making the database "multi-user" so it can be opened more than once?
Cork[home]
but you can copy them, or even sync them
jshanab: that won't most likly happen
jshanab
Cork. Please elaborate
Cork[home]
jshanab: only way to do that would be to split the database part of firefox into its own process :s
and there is other parts of the profile that can't work with more then one process eather
like cache, and so on
jshanab
Cork[home] What does it use now? It would be interesting to use something like postgres
Cork[home]
sqlite
but it used html before, and it was the same there
jshanab
Cork: But that makes sense that the cache needs to be per process. I do see a build option to add support for postgres database
Sorry, that is seamonkey not firefox
Cork[home]
:)
firefox is built around sqlites dialect of the sql language, i think it would be farly hard to replace it
jshanab
Cork: Well if you can elaborate on copy and sync of profiles...
Cork[home]
there is an addon that allows you to sync your profiles
jshanab
ahh, found it
Do you know if it works for seamonkey, I primarily use seamonkey over firefox
Cork[home]
let me check
it has declared support for firefox, fennec and seamonkey
jshanab
Thanks!
kbrosnan
it should, though it only syncs history, bookmarks and a few prefs
jshanab
It won't install "not compatible with seamonkey 2.0.4" :-(
Cork[home]
2.0 :s
thats old
jshanab
Really? latest unstable in my distro, Guess they are sleeping
Cork[home]
hmm
no never mind
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/addon/10868/
that one should work
jshanab
ok, Thanks. I was able to create a profile and start it from a desktop file.
