Maicod

rjohnson19
Malmis: browser.urlbar.maxRichResults in about:config
err, Maicod ^
Maicod
thanks !
I thought there would be an option in the general options but couldn't find it :)
it worked fine
it even gives a slider so I could even make it to say 500 entries if I wanted
Fujk
can you get source code for all firefox addons?
rjohnson19
no problem :)
Maicod
rjohnson19: I don't understand why they use a default of 12 only
cpg

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04. In Firefox where did the Java checkbox go? I can only see Javascript.
I mean where can I turn Java off?
Firefox Version 3.6.3
rjohnson19
With the other plugins, it doesn't get special treatment anymore.
winXPuser
hi diddy
diddy
Hi
winXPuser
so you had firefox 3.5, it had java, then you updated, and can't see it in tools, addons, plugins?
diddy
I want to make sure Java is off for safe surfing. However, I can not find it in the plugin section.
winXPuser, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04
From Ubuntu 09.10
winXPuser
okay, if it is not there than you do not have it, I'm 100% sure in it
diddy
And there still was a Java checkbox.
winXPuser
diddy, this checkbox just installed the Java plugin when you hit it
diddy
OK.
What is the difference between a plugin and an addon?
winXPuser
diddy, any Java you can ever have with Firefox must be listed in plugins; a moment I'll give you the URL
diddy
ok
And now the close, minimize bottons are on the left of the browser bar.
WOW
winXPuser
diddy, addons is the most general word, they include extensions, plugins, themes
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/pages/faq *What is an Add-on?* Add-ons let you add features which aren't part of the standard application. Themes change appearance without changing functionality. Search Plugins and Dictionaries/Language Packs add additional search engines and language support. Extensions add more extensive features to the browser; some add simple toolbars while...
...others can add a wide range of new features.
diddy, the close buttons position can be reset back to right top, I can give you an URL too
diddy
thx, very nice of you
winXPuser
http://sites.google.com/site/alucidfs/how-i-do/move-buttons-to-right-side
diddy
winXPuser, Cool! That worked. Thank you so much.
winXPuser
:)

if i tell apache to 'AddType image/gif .foo', that sends back a 'Content-Type: gif/image' whenever firefox requests a .foo file extension from apache. I assume that means that when firefox receives that content-type, it knows to render the file as a gif, rather than popping open a 'save as' dialog?
Peng_
Yes.
Unless you also send Content-Disposition: attachment, I suppose.
infid
content-disposition is only if i'm doing a POST/PUT right?
Peng_
I dunno.
It's whenever you want to send it.
clever
i beleive IE is just totaly dumb and ignores the content-type too
so dont rely too much on the server sending it and it just working
Peng_
It might ignore the Content-Type, sniff the file and find that it's a GIF anyway.
infid
any idea why atom+xml is listed on http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types/application/ but not rss+xml?
Peng_
infid: Because they haven't registered it yet.
morgajel
hey guys, does anyone know of any good plugins for figuring out why firefox is running like a dog? running 3.5.9 currently, and for the past few months I've had to restart two or three times a day. because it slows to unusable
winXPuser
update to 3.6.3?
it's much faster in my experience
Cork[home]
morgajel: and i would try if its caused by one/some of your extensions; safe mode is a nice place to start
morgajel
winXPuser: that's plan B; I'd like to know what's going on if possible.
Cork[home]: first thing I tried was disabling them... still had the same issue
Cork[home]
morgajel: did you try disabling your plugins?
morgajel
Cork[home]: no, but I suspect that's where the issue is
Cork[home]
well give it a try then :)
morgajel
the real problem is it doesn't manifest for 4 hours or so, so my browser is damn near useless while I test
Cork[home]
hmm, that sounds like a memory leak
morgajel
yeah, my money is on flash
but I'd like some way to confirm that
Cork[home]
ya, same here
morgajel: except for disabling flash and trying if that helps, you can try updating flash (if you'r not at 10.1)
part from that, theres not much you can du actually...
morgajel
10.0r45 currently
that's the latest adobe has out for linux
Wes-
morgajel: I found 3.5.late much leakier than 3.6.x
morgajel: not just flash - gmail for me
morgajel
hrm... doesn't look like lucid comes with 3.6 yet
Cork[home]
what??
your sure?
(Action) checks
winXPuser
what!
Cork[home]
its 3.6.3 here
morgajel
just checked the repo and was still reporting 3.5.9
Cork[home]
else it would be really bad, cause it would mean ubuntu would be stuck in 3.5 for another 6 months >_<
morgajel
either way I'll just grab the ppa
Cork[home]
morgajel: lucid is 3.6.3 by default
check so you go agenst the correct repos
morgajel
huh.
ugh, it's not gonna let me just grab firefox; I'll half to pull down half of lucid
what the hell, might as well.
amabo
hello - i know there's some way to enable certain themes to work on different operating systems than what they were compiled for. does anyone know how to do this?
also - i'm interested in installing the nightly build (minefield) on ubuntu but don't know how and any help would be greatly appreciated
winXPuser
hi
about the nightly, i can give url to package but no idea how to install it there,
firebot nightly
oops a secon
d
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/
this one
morgajel
amabo: there's a firefox-daily-ppa that I was just looking at
winXPuser
about the themes,
are you trying to create a theme and to make it have different dirs to load for different os's?
or what do you exactly want to do, amabo?
amabo
winXPuser: no it's an existing theme that only works with Mac OS X that i'd like to get working with ubuntu
winXPuser: also - i can't find any ppa's on that webpage or in the firefox folder
morgajel: sorry that was directed to you*
winXPuser
amabo, email its developer about it, porting themes to other os's is pretty difficult, requires some theming knowledge in general AND knowledge of the theme in question
morgajel
amabo: google for firefox 3.6 ubuntu ppa
I'd give you the link, but, well I just uninstalled firefox :)
winXPuser
?!!! why?!!!?!?!
Cork[home]
amabo: ppa is built by the ubuntu theme, mozilla doen't provide ppa's or dep pachages for that matter
morgajel
winXPuser: purged 3.5, tried installing 3.6
winXPuser
ok
Cork[home]
*teme
morgajel
saw it was gonna pull down half of lucid so I said hell with it, upgrade to lucid
amabo
i found https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-daily/+archive/ppa but i have no idea what to do with it
Cork[home]
ya firefox 3.6 will pull xulrunner 1.9.2, and that will pull almost the entire lucid
morgajel
my general rule is not to upgrade for 2 months, but I go 24 hours to get it happy/reinstall
Cork[home]
lucid is lts so i don't think there will by much risk in updating
morgajel
famous last words
Cork[home]
ubuntu has put down enormus amount of time to make sure the system is as safe as posible
backporting changes to old known safe releases of packages
infid
i heard lucid wont have 3.6 until may 13th
flash is supposed to run better in that, cant wait
still waiting for do-release-upgrade to finish installing lucid, going on 2 hours now
morgajel

amabo
hello - i'd like to be able to use Minefield on Ubuntu but I don't know what to do with the firefox folder that I download - any help?
Peng_
amabo: Whatever you want. cd to it and run ./firefox.
amabo
Peng_: it says it's version 3.6.3 =\

How would I go about linking against a custom build cairo library to build against for firefox?
PolitikerNEU
Hello, does anybody know how to write firefox extensions (mostly) in java? The best thing would be to have a function passing an XML-Tree (or Source-code string) of the current page to the java code which returns e.g. a string parsed in javascript
foul_owl
how do i reset the homepage of a certain profile without loading that profile?
dougmencken
hi all; how to get java support in firefox?
winXPuser
hi
a second
dougmencken
I do have java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin.ppc 1:1.6.0.0-37.b17.fc12 installed
winXPuser
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+the+Java+plugin+with+Firefox
dougmencken
very informative page, with 20 lines of obvious information
Arora says "You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 13)." on page http://www.java.com/en/download/dt_verify.jsp?plugin=true&latest=true&users_jre=1.6.0_13
"No suitable plugins were found." << hmm, it's after I click on "Click here to download plugin."
winXPuser
hm
dougmencken, your os?
dougmencken
firefox 3.6.2, platform: linux powerpc
winXPuser
Does http://www.java.com/en/download/ help? maybe 'sudo apt-get install Java' in Terminal?
dougmencken
no, Sun^WOracle doesn't provide binaries for my platform, there's openjdk for us, and it works well; and, I'm not on Debian
s/works well/works well but not in ff/
winXPuser
hmm, "I do have java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin.ppc 1:1.6.0.0-37.b17.fc12 installed" should work in Firefox, maybe ask at ##linux
dougmencken
I'll beter ask in #java ;) joining
found it: it is "/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0/jre/lib/ppc/IcedTeaPlugin.so"
farzad
how can i avoid from create many instance of firefox and convert the new instance to new tab ? (is it possible )
winXPuser
a moment,
tools options aka edit preferences,
content section,
errr tabs section,
tick 'open new windows in new taab anstead'
farzad
no the problem is when i execute an other firefox i dont want have two instance of firefox just one in two tabs
winXPuser: thats for links
winXPuser
how do you "execute an other firefox"?
well, same here, when I double-click firefox image on desktop, it opens new window, but if you place a shortcut to homepage & launch it then it could probably open it in new tab
farzad
winXPuser: i'm call it from my program ( i develope a program) that need tabing but when i call firefox for two or more i get two or more instance not two or more tabs i got this
to prevent from new instance
winXPuser
hmm
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Code_snippets/Tabbed_browser
farzad
are they JS ?
winXPuser
this link is js, yes
farzad
thank you for help
dougmencken
hmm, interesting: http://forums.opensuse.org/get-help-here/applications/431458-firefox-3-6-no-icetea-java.html ; so no Java for me at all (don't want to downgrade to 3.5.x)?
kbrosnan
3.5.9 it is still supported
the icetea people are working on a new style java plugin, though oracle buying java may have borked that schedule
dougmencken
so why to rely on proprietary plugin instead on free one?
and oracle's plugin does exist only for linux-x86(_64) ; not for linux-pcc, for example
s/pcc/ppc/
kbrosnan
java had some special code in Firefox, it was removed

Hi there. My girl-friend lost her Firefox Master Password. I know there is normally no way to recover this besides doing some Bruteforce using FireMaster for example. But is there a quick method to recover the master password if you still know some of the passwords stored?
kbrosnan
no
dougmencken
remember your passwords
any "keychains" are bad imho; single-machine single-os only, easy to lost, etc.
Vampire0
I remember my passwords. She doesn't :-/
kollektiv
anyone know how the eviction rank works in the firefox cache?

I started having issues with Firefox and gmail lately, is Google doing the same as Microsoft: if you don't use their browser they make it suck more?
or maybe its just a new add-on I installed..
kbrosnan
works well for me. checked safe mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
Lefantomedurezo
hello
is there an add on to fit to width on firefox?
that mean to ajust automaticaly image to the page's width
kbrosnan
downsizing should already happen, upsizing i would guess that there is one. though i don't have any names
gluxon
Is there an email that people can use to contact mozilla about permissions for using firefox in a suite?
kbrosnan
you can use it unmodified without permission
gluxon
kbrosnan: Wait, really?
