what would cause Firefox 3.0x to start displaying crappy text encoding on sites like newegg.com. Half the text appears as a random slush of extended-ascii characters

Firefox has a bug.

I'd like to get Firefox 3.6 to use the Keychain on Mac OS X instead of its internal cross-platform-compatible password database. Is anyone aware of a good method to do this?

chrisfrog
hey
I am looking at rolling out firefox across everyone's machines. Is there a remote install option ?
Octothorpe
I think the admin utils in Remote Desktop can do that
Apple Remote Desktop, that is -- you can push apps out, I believe
chrisfrog
was wondering if there is a remote install script
kbrosnan
Octothorpe: not possible atm, keychain that is
chrisfrog: os?
Octothorpe
That blows. Apparently it's a long-wished request: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106400
kbrosnan
yep
Octothorpe
chrisfrog: Microsoft Group Policy can push-install apps per GPO

Hi everyone
I'm using firefox 3.6, and I think that TraceMonkey is not working because is really really slow with JS
I have checked the jit options, and all are true
and I have tried the deb version as well as the tar.bz2
any idea how can I debug this to find where may be the problem?
kbrosnan
only i686 builds are traced
teleyinex
ok
but, do you know why it is too slow my TraceMonkey
I mean, I'm using firefox 3.6
and it should work fine with box2d js
The_8472
are there 64bit builds of firefox for windows?
t3rk3l
The_8472 nope
kbrosnan
not from Mozilla, plans are for Firefox 4 to have x64 builds cross the 3 major platforms
The_8472
ah nice, i'd only have to double the number of open tabs and i'd already run into the 2GB range...
kbrosnan
teleyinex: the demos run smooth for me on archlinux, 3.6 x64
The_8472
kbrosnan, do you know which version will be based on the current trunk instead of the 3.6 branch?
kbrosnan
plan is to ship 4.0 sometimes in q4 *subject to change*
teleyinex
kbrosnan, in my case is impossible to obtain something good
I have deleted everything except my profile
reinstalled firefox
The_8472
tried safe mode?
teleyinex
and then run it with a new profile and I get the same problem
yes, I have tried also the safe mode

The_8472
urgh... Q4 :/
teleyinex
I don't know what's going on as my computer has enough computing power is a two core machine with 4gb of mem
kbrosnan
teleyinex: graphics driver?
teleyinex
nvidia
working perfectly well
kbrosnan
version?
teleyinex
3.6.3
kbrosnan
no, nVidia
teleyinex
wait
169.12
kbrosnan
i'm at 195.36.15
teleyinex
mine is a bit too old
but, it should work
wait, I will reboot my machine with an ubuntu lucid live cd and check if firefox from the live cd works better or not
The_8472
starting firefox -> 7464 cache entries. Browsing 10 minutes -> 8192 cache entries. restarting -> it loads tons of stuff again
(Action) rages
teleyinex
nevertheless, it will be a pity if firefox is having issues with the nvidia driver while chromium goes really faster
AL13N_ipv4
i have issues with CORS... the headers seem fine to me, but firefox doesn't send out the particular request after the OPTIONS request... how can i debug that in firefox?
teleyinex
kbrosnan, I'm back ;)
I have found the problem
is the nVidia driver
I will search in the web if there are any fixes for this :)
thanks for pointing out, where may be the problem
hebz0rl
hello im using firefox on ubuntu "lucid lynx" and i want to use differenz profiles for different usages (like default WebDevelopement and Testing) but when i start firefox with another profile (firefox -P "Testing") it just opens a new window and uses the profile of the old window what can i do about that?
Peng_
hebz0rl: pass -no-remote too

hi
im trying to associate sip://<telephone_number> with ekiga in firefox 3.5

network.protocol-handler.app.sip doesnt work
ff still gives me answer protocol (sip) isn't associated with any program.
were there any changes about that since ff 3.5?
ajsie
anyone knows how i can click on a part (box, line etc) of a webpage and see/edit the css?
i have installed firebug and web developer but dont know how to do this
Rotwang
I somehow managed to add that hadnler thanks tto network.protocol-handler.expose.sip
ive chosen application but it does not work :c
no output in error console
if i try to execute a script it doesnt work, but if i try to execute binary file it works
is there anybody?
hello
why firefox won't execute my script associated with sip protocol
script is in path, is executable
but firefox won't launch it
according to this: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-433548.html
it should work
kavakava
Is there a way to add a content type(mime type) under Applications in Preferences?
kbrosnan
only by hand editing a text file, mimetypes.rdf
kavakava
Isn't that a bit "hackish"? There was a way to do it back in the day. :-P
dv-
What's the 123mb firefox-3.6.4.bundle file on the ftp? Source for the dependencies too?
kbrosnan
dv-: an hg export file
dv-
Oh.
(Action) cancels
Why doesn't the configure script automatically --disable stuff if it can't find the relevant dependencies?
ksbalaji
I tried to download an addon for removing duplicate mails for thunderbird from the site removedupes.mozdev.org - but firefox says that the site's certificate is not valid. Advise?
dv-
configure: error: Cannot build Firefox with --disable-feeds.
Why make it an option then?
kbrosnan
because you can build a lot more than just Firefox from that source
dv-
Ok
Would be nice to have a --disable-javascript though
ksbalaji
hi again kbrosnan ! any info on certificate validity please?
kbrosnan
what is the link?
ksbalaji
https://removedupes.mozdev.org/bugs.html
kbrosnan
The certificate is only valid for the following names:
www.mozdev.org , mozdev.org , www.mozdev.org , svn.mozdev.org , hg.mozdev.org , mozdev.org , bugzilla.mozdev.org
ksbalaji
FF says that -The certificate is only valid for the following names: www.mozdev.org , mozdev.org , www.mozdev.org , svn.mozdev.org , hg.mozdev.org , mozdev.org , bugzilla.mozdev.org
kbrosnan
you'll notice removedupes.mozdev.org is not on that list, thus you get the message
ksbalaji
yes ! Can I download the addon? Is there any risk? Or there is any flaw in issuing the certificate?
kbrosnan, can you tell whether the site is trustworthy? - is it operated by mozilla?
kbrosnan
given that mozdev does not control the content on individual extension pages they don't give them https.
the site is not run by Mozilla
ksbalaji
I am confused. Can I make an exception and proceed in this case?
If you feel that there is some threat, I would like to report this to mozilla. In that case, whom do I contact please? any idea?
dv-
I get this error building 3.6.4-rc ../../../dist/include/nsHTMLMedia/Element.h:40:28: fatal error: nsMediaDecoder.h: No such file or directory
kbrosnan
it is the expected way https works, the certificate is not valid for the connection. if you accept it the transaction will still be done over https
it is the same as visiting https://mail.yahoo.com
ksbalaji
kbrosnan, hmm - I get it now.
If mozdev have not issued https status, the extension pages should not have https. There should be some discipline. Do I make sense?
mozdev should censure such misleading links. = or get those links included in the certificates atleast?
kbrosnan
they don't control the content on individual extesnion pages. i believe that not using a wildcard cert that would match *.mozdev.org was an explicit decision on the part of the group that runs mozdev
dv-
Ok I'm going to go build the stable release instead
ksbalaji
dv-, good luck!
dv-
:(
ksbalaji
now kbrosnan , if it is so, mozdev group should not allow any https links from their site so that prospective downloaders will not be confused.
anyway, thanks kbrosnan , you have given some insight into how https certificate handling is done. Now where can I go to verify whether an extension provider is genuine?
dv-
Same error. nsHTMLMediaElement.hs can't find nsMediaDecoder.h. Anyone know which configure option this has to do with?
ksbalaji
dv-, atleast we now know that the error is not with the version. You are on the right direction.
TuomasT
How can I disable the Google search on typed url that fails to resolve?
dv-
TuomasT: I think that's in about:config
TuomasT
dv-: I too, but I've so far been unable to find it
ksbalaji
bye friends.
zpao
TuomasT: keyword.URL
but setting it to blank results it an attempt to load "www.whatever.com"
TuomasT
Why is that functionality fixed to Google by the way?
Even Chrome let's one select the search provider..
Whereas Firefox comes loaded with all things Google
zpao
chrome merged search & urlbar. in fx the keyword thing is more a hidden feature
(Action) goes offline for a bit
Tekk_
is that a channel for seamonkey?
kbrosnan
Tekk_: #seamonkey on irc.mozilla.org
Tekk_
kbrosnan: thanks, Iw as looking at #seamonkey on freenode :)
kbrosnan
dv-: the last 30 or so lines of the build would be helpful addtionally your .mozconfig
dv-
kbrosnan: well I googled it and ended up commenting out some include, but now I have more errors
http://devio.us/~dv/build.log
DreadKnight
heya, why isn't float: left; working for the widgets on this page? http://www.freezingmoon.org/ - the ones bellow "power to the numbers"
works fine in chromium
actually it's using margin-left: -330px; which has the same issue
dojo
is there a way to 'whitelist' certain sites so that when you visit them, the data is 'sandboxed'. almost like privacy mode for certain sites?
nanonyme
Hey, is there any way in Firefox to block JavaScript access to navigator.mimeTypes and navigator.plugins?
I don't want JavaScript to be capable of obtaining that kind of information about my system.
Cork[home]
noscript
nanonyme
It blocks too many things and isn't well configurable with a quick glance.
Cork[home]
you can set it to allow
it has a sub function called surrogate
you can add some simple js in there to replace plugins and mimeTypes with junk
http://hackademix.net/2009/01/25/surrogate-scripts-vs-google-analytics/
nanonyme
Or clear it, I guess.
Thanks... Now I just have to figure out how to do it and reinstall noscript.
Cork[home]
if your doing this to make you harder to track, remember that you will most likly make your self have a more uniq fingerprint if you do :)
nanonyme
I already pretty much clear all user information on browser exit and fake my user agent.
I use a user-agent from a Windows version of a Firefox of the same browser version, that is.
Cork[home]
well i mean when they use plugins mimetypes and the like to make a finger print, clearing this variable will be a finger print too
nanonyme
Well, yeah.
zok
Is there a way to change a setting in about:config without opening it up in firefox? Is there a file somewhere I can edit?
Cork[home]
and facing useragent will break some sites
zok: for what?
ow
nanonyme
Well, seriously. It's the same browser, just on a different platform. What could go wrong? ;)
Cork[home]
ya, its prefs.js
zok
Well, I've got a script that makes an ssh connection to my server for tunneling purposes
And I don't want to open about:config every time I want to use my tunnel
nanonyme
Cork[home]: But yeah, you have a point. I should instead rewrite MIME's and plugin's to involve generic Windows version strings.
zok
I'd rather just add some clever commands into my script that makes the ssh connection
Cork[home]
nanonyme: ex. you have different fonts in windows and mac/linux, so some sites differ on that ( i do quite some of that acually)
nanonyme
Right.
Cork[home]
zok: ya, its prefs.js <-- this was for you
zok
Oh sweet!
Does ff read that on the fly or when it's loaded?
nanonyme
Cork[home]: I was mostly thinking of faking plugins list to make the user agent more beleavable. *shrug*
Cork[home]
nanonyme: sites might break, just so you know
nanonyme
Right.
*shrug*
Cork[home]
this data is actually used frequvently
to make sites work
nanonyme
I understand that I'd easily have breakage if I'd tell it that I use eg IE but I think at least in a perfect world just telling it that I use FF on different OS shouldn't be the end of the world. *grumble*
Cork[home]
it might very well be
ex. you might end up installing extensions from addons.mozilla.org for windows, instead of linux
and so on
