does anyone have an idea why FF would reload things on restart when they have etags, last-modified several days into the future etc?
and i've set it to use 1GB disk cache, so it shouldn't re-request things... or at least send the etags/not-modified-since stuff
but it doesn't
which means it takes several minutes to restart firefox
err, i mean last-modified in the past/expires in the future
kbrosnan
The_8472: 1gb is too much cache, you'll run into issues with hash colisions
The_8472
lol wut?
Peng_
It will only put 8192 items in the disk cache anyway.
The_8472
what sucky hash collides with only 1GB worth of data?
Peng_
A small one? :D
The_8472
Peng, any way to increase this? i have like... 80+ tabs open
and it's silly to reload them just because i restart FF

kbrosnan
using the trunk might help, they changed the hash
Peng_
Really? Neat.
The_8472
i mean the limit on the number of items
using the beta update channel atm, nightlies make too much trouble
they break every so often
kbrosnan
no, as i understand it would be limited by the hash method
Arphetic
In thunderbird, is it possible to set up multiple names when sending emails? For example, I would like a different sender value for my work and for non-work, but both with the same email adress. Is this possible and if so, how?
The_8472
oh, that's a what... 12 bit hash?
kbrosnan
Arphetic: you can find #thunderbird on irc.mozilla.org
Arphetic
ye just noticed, thought i was in #mozilla
The_8472
Arphetic, what you want is possible. i think
kbrosnan, any link for further info? it really bothers me ^^
kbrosnan
i don't think you'll find any fix for firefox 3.6, as i've said to anyone who is serious about caching stuff, use a caching proxy like squid
The_8472
*sigh*
normally it's not an issue. i would keep FF open for weeks. but either it crashes and discards cache. or i restart occasionally to avoid it... but then it doesn't cache enough items anyway
mophead
Is there any repository of the myriad Flash problems in firefox under ubuntu? Every time I update the distro I have to shave yak to make flash work. i'm using lucid now.

Hello everyone
Hello gavin
hello ipac

Olson
firefox on linux, what does libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 want to be linked to, because I have that library installed and yet firefox refuses to run
The_8472
<@Peng_> A small one? :D <- wow. i took a look at the hash function. and it's a poor excuse for one... and this hasn't been fixed for almost a decade -.-
kbrosnan
it is changed on the trunk
The_8472
ok, let me rephrase. it took a decade to fix ^^
the related bugs still seem to be open though, like the limit on the entries
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=175600 <- yup, there it is
so even using a trunk build wouldn't help
Lewoco
Are there any add-ons or greasemonkey scripts to hide/reorder columns in tables?
Raccoon`
would be nice if built into html
dman777
i disabled quickfind by searchkeys.disable.all true but q still brings up quick find!

jmut
hi folks. Anyone know extension for displaying event listeners on elements. I couldn't find something in add-ons page but who knows. Safari/Chrome seem to have this thingy out of the box?
Cork
firebug + its event extension
bah looks like they have droped the eventbug extension
http://getfirebug.com/releases/eventbug/1.5/
jmut
Cork: yep seems so . thanks
Cork: do you know if possible to run firebug on demand only. The simplest example not having to disable it when using gmail but just trigger it on pressing F12
Cork
jmut: it should normally start disabled
(when the bug is b/w)
madmac2501
hi
jmut
Cork: but if disabled I can only enable it..I am not sure I can trigger it on by default
Cork: I mean trigger it on demand
madmac2501
i just compiled http://www.ohloh.net/p/gst-browser-plugin for windows using msys
i put the dll in plugins directory, but the plugin does not appear in about:plugins
how could i debug this?
DJJeff
firefox got a huge thing on BBC's Click
pretty amazing

hi, if I directly open the .ogg music file, the control panel can adjust the volume up and down. if I open a html file with <audio src=audio.ogg controls></audio>, the control panel will not show the volume adjustment option. it can only mute or unmute. why?
Cork
sgo11: you get the same problem here? http://jsbin.com/izili3/2
sgo11
Cork, kind of. when it's loading, i can see the volume adjustment panel. when the loading is finished, the adjustment panel is gone.
Cork
you've tried in firefox safe mode?
sgo11
Cork, btw, my firefox version is 3.5.8. I tested this in both windows and linux. how to run in safe mode? let me check --help.
Cork
<firebot> Firefox's own Safe Mode (and in other supported Mozilla applications) is a good way to see if an extension, theme or ui customizations (localstore.rdf) are causing a problem. See http://s4c.in/gx or http://s4c.in/gy
sgo11
Cork, I just tried to launch it with firefox -safe-mode. the problem still exists.
Cork
hmm
well it shows here in all versions that support <audio>
i have problem moving the cursor into the control though
sgo11: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=502892
thats what i get
sgo11
Cork, yeah, it supports the <audio>, but it just don't allow me to adjust the volume. if I open the .ogg file directly, it will be fine. i tested this in both windows (firefox version 3.5.2) and linux (firefox version 3.5.8) on two different computers. I think it should be general problem.....
Cork
if you don't see it at all, its something else though
sgo11
Cork, it should be something else. i can not see it at all.
Cork
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=533201
sgo11: check those bugs, i'm quite certed its what you see
kirvesAxe
Does someone know how my Firefox 3.0.1 was able to "auto-upgrade" itself to 2.0.0.14 ???
Cork
kirvesAxe: only if you have the update set to automatic
old firefox has had some bugs in the update manager
kirvesAxe
"some" seems quite vague in this, but... whatever. Does someone have a .deb packaged version that is never than 3.0.1?
sgo11
Cork, not really. I saw that problem in one website. forgot the url. but with my simply test (simply html file), the slider just doesn't come up at all. with the bug, it comes out, but disappear when trying to adjust. I saw this problem in one URL though.
s/simply/simple/
Cork
sgo11: did you even check the bugs comments?
sgo11
Cork, yeah. let me check it again. sorry.
Cork, got it. the wikipedia link shows the problem that I met...
hi, where I can check which version of firefox supports what tags in html5? basically, I would like to check which parts of html5 that firefox already supported. thanks.
kbrosnan
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Upcoming_Firefox_features_for_developers
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Firefox_3.6_for_developers and the links to the older versions at the bottm
sgo11
kbrosnan, thanks a lot.
the video tag doesn't have click-to-buffer attribute. that means, it's better to put a image on the homepage, and link the image to a new page which has autobuffer turned on.
kbrosnan
there is a poster attribute for that
sgo11
kbrosnan, yeah, but I heard that firefox will autobuffer the video even if there is a poster attribute on. is that true?
kbrosnan
best way to know would be to try
sgo11
yeah. :)

david-w
gavin mconnor, can you make a channel for #bugzilla on freenode
gavin
no
david-w
OK
but I know some people who are looking for it
can you make #bugzilla transfer to here then
gavin
tell those people about irc.m.o/#mozwebtools
david-w
OK
gavin I am going to register #bugzilla and makeit come here
gavin
why?
this channel has nothing to do with bugzilla
sounds like you're trying to solve a problem that doesn't need solving
david-w
OK

hi

Cannot find Firefox runtime directory. Exiting.
what is wrong here
rameshwor
cani put my question of thunderbird here . ?
drale2k
Ho ho ho
dknight
google's concept of native sdk is nice. I would like to know how firefox is coping up to it
kaziem
where can I download the latest RELEASE of firefox 64bit for linux? I can't find it anywhere
dknight
kaziem: which distro?
kaziem
debian
LtChambers
I have a very strange problem with Firefox. It even affects chatzilla now. Network connections that it launches go inactive when the window that made the connection doesn't have any events. In the downloads window, downloading a big file, if I leave the mouse outside the window, the download stalls. If I move the mouse around on it it works fine
3.6.3
kaziem
any idea dknight ?
dknight
kaziem: well when I used debian, I used the package supplied by debian
kaziem
iceweasel sucks :(
dknight
kaziem: though I agree it was not latest; but I trust debian's stability.
kaziem: yeah, it is slow
kaziem
very very slow, its the main reason why I'm changing
dknight
kaziem: precisely. thats why on my debian box, I switched to chrome beta
kaziem: well did you try debian channel?
kaziem
sure, no response
i was hoping for some nightly build link here... where my delicious addon would work (3.7.x doesnt)
dknight
kaziem: they can tell you the essentials of debian. I can tell you about gentoo, arch, etc but debian packaging is different.
kaziem: get a tarball and try compiling it
kaziem: that seems to be the alternative left with you; but beware of issues with flash.
kaziem: I had problems when I was trying it on gentoo
kaziem
there's a zillion of compiling flags i don't know about hehe.. was trying to avoid that
kbrosnan
kaziem: there are not any x64 releases currently
kaziem
does that mean that addons won't work with any of the nightly builds available?
kbrosnan
most addons won't work by default, you can test them by using the extension compatability reporter
kaziem
can't force them to work?
it's probably just a version check issue
oh
you just have to add extensions.checkCompatibility.<version> to false in about:config
and checkUpdateSecurity to false as well
sharms
if I want to run javascript on startup in firefox 3 to customize the interface, which file should I put it in?
preferably for all users, but I could also add it in the .mozilla folder if that isnt an option
also does alert() work inside firefox js files?
hmm is this the wrong channel for firefox internals questions?
to answer my first question, I hacked into _onBrowserStartup, is there a better way I should do it?
gavin
are you manually editing a firefox build?
you'd be better off just writing an extension
irc.mozilla.org/extdev can help you with that
there are also docs on developer.mozilla.org
alert() won't work from that particular JS file, since it's an XPCOM component
sharms
gavin: thanks for the information
Raccoon`
no, please edit the firefox build
it needs it! :p
gavin
?
Raccoon`
could someone give me an about:config > something.allow-modal-window = True/False (default True)
Setting to False will prevent any child window from disabling the parent window.
ie, save dialogs, pref/settings/etc dialogs.
there are no instances i can find where a firefox actually needs a modal window. a window should only be modal if changes to the parent window will disrupt the state of the child. i have never found a case where that is true.
for instance: a save dialog will contain the name the file should be saved as. it is COMMONLY desired to select + copy text from the underlying page for use as the filename.
gavin
there is no such pref
window modality has several functional implications that you can't just switch off
(e.g. content expects its execution state to be halted while an alert() is up)
bronb
if I have two windows of firefox, the first with 10 tabs, the second with 1... I close the first window, and then I close the second window. What is going to happen the next time I execute firefox? which will re-appear? (firefox 3.6.3, XP)
