When I use ctrl + K in Firefox, I'm taken to http://www.google.com.au/firefox. Is there a way to either modify that URL, or disable it?
kbrosnan
Tobias|: should be the default search engine for the search bar
Tobias|
I see, it's acting this way because I hide the search bar
kbrosnan
correct
Tobias|
That's annoying :/
kbrosnan
might not be easily customizable
Tobias|
Is there no way to manually add search engines without addons?
kbrosnan
they are not the same as extensions

Tobias|
No, but they're installed through the same interface
and there's no apparent way to add them manually >.>
kbrosnan
search addons are small bits of xml https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Creating_OpenSearch_plugins_for_Firefox
Tobias|
Isn't that over the top? :|
I mean, I'm sure it's nice for the developers of websites with search engines
But it sucks from a user perspective
kbrosnan
you should be able to add search providers without going throguh the extension interface
Tobias|
I should be able to add them without having to do any XML o_o
bobo123
how do I turn off the button that lists open tabs?
and is it possible to turn of the + buton in the tab-bar?
Tobias|
I believe both are part of the theme in use
bobo123
aha.
so I have to creat a usercrome-something file?
frootee
does anyone happen to know if private browsing blocks flash cookies too?
kbrosnan
in the flash prerelease adobe reports it does
frootee
kbrosnan, thanks. what does that mean for the stable version?
bobo123
I hope we can trust adobe on their word..... open source make things so much easier
kbrosnan
frootee: no

Curious question. Has anyone ran into issues using javascript .reset() methods in Firefox 3.6?
Pretty much each of the main ways of resetting a form in Firefox will not work for me currently in 3.6.3, firebug basically comes up seting "*.reset is not a function", only in firefox though, IE, Opera, Safari, seems to work fine
bobo123
what is the name of the list of open tabs -button so I can set display:none for it in userChrome.css ?
crashsystems
I'm working on an XP box, and Firefox 3.6 will not start up in any limited accounts. The Firefox process shows up and uses 100% CPU, but the GUI never appears. I tried both reinstalling and removing the user profiles, and nether have fixed it. The user does not recall installing any new software or changing any settings prior to this occurring. Anyone have ideas of what might be going on?
synapt
crashsystems: Try to start firefox with Safemode? (-safe-mode tag in the shortcut)
crashsystems
synapt: I've got a virus scan going in the AVG rescue CD. I'll try that once I boot back into Windows.
kenpark
Hi, I am looking for an addon that - upon clicking the x on the firefox window - ends firefox completely instead of closing the window. Thus preventing that I loose my tabs from Window B when closing Window A
synapt
crashsystems: Gotcha

crashsystems
I've got the user switched to Linux on their new laptop, but their old desktop still has XP on it. :/
synapt
lol, well I'm not system bias'd at all, I'd simply imagine its a plugin or something maybe, which I believe -safe-mode will disable
crashsystems
IIRC the only plugin installed is flash
its not an extension, or moving their old profile out of the way would have fixed it
kbrosnan
anything if you start firefox from the command line?
crashsystems
nope
but the windows cli has never given me much feedback
bobo123
hmm.. I can't find it.... do anyone know the name of the button at the right on the tab bar?
synapt
In Firefox 3.6.x? There are two on the far right of the tab bar, "Add new Tab" and "List All Tabs"
bobo123
synapt: the List All Tabs
I want to turn it off in userchrome.css so I must know its name
(And yes I want to turn off the "+" button too)
synapt
Ah, now that I'm not sure of
bobo123
if I want to turn off the Go button I could add browser.toolbars.showbutton.go {display: none;} in userChrome.css, so I want something similar for the buttons in the tab bar
kbrosnan
http://www.google.com/search?q=firefox+userchrome.css+remove+list+all+tabs
bobo123
ah.. for firefox3 and later it is .tabs-container > stackĀ  {display:none!important}

this ^ highly annoys me
Shouldn't a browser help me manage downloading files instead of creating a lot (depending on the number of files) of manual labor?
My operating system recognizes the file type just fine (look at the file type icon right there) so I don't see a reason to turn that checkbox and automatic download behaviour off JUST because the server might not be sending the right mime type
I don't control the server, I do operate the client.
so why can't I just be able to download say 200 of these files all in one go if I might like to do so?
kbrosnan
industrial: firefox deals in mime types not file extensions
industrial
still, I think my argument of "YOU ARENT HELPING" still stands.
^__^
I think of this as a serious usability defect and am almost forced into finding alternatives to download files and use firefox for just passing/copying the to be downloaded URL's.
Since clicking 'Save File' and then Ok n times isn't my hobby :(
(consuming the content is! :D)
kbrosnan
it is an open bug, however it means disobaying a few rules set in rfcs
kenpark
industrial: there are addons that do that.
industrial
Is it possible to override this behaviour with e.g. an ad.. ok nice :)
kenpark
industrial: https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/201 for example
industrial
works just fine! thanks.
aljosa
where can i ask questions about webgl in firefox?
gentoo_giant
Hello. I've been searching for a solution for this, and i can't seem to find one. I don't like how whenever I search in the URL bar, firefox does a Google search (I'm one of those people who's smart enough to not like Google ;) ) Is there a way to change the URL to refer to a search engine like StartPage?
mzz
gentoo_giant: you're probably looking for keyword.URL in about:config
gentoo_giant
Ah, thanks.
infid
anyone here know if the TamperData addon can send a HEAD request? it doesn't seem to show any modify option for get/post
v1k1ng
hi there. i am having a weird problem with my internet and i want to know if it's FF's fault. when i try to visit Google or FaceBook, FF takes me to a different site.
it also happens with Flickr and Twitter. some other sites seem fine.
i am using Ubuntu.
also, it only happens when i'm using wireless.
i'm downloading Google Chrome atm to see if that makes a difference but my connection's kinda slow.
infid
try with a diff browser
sounds like a proxy is redirecting you
v1k1ng
yeah as i said i'm downloading chrome but it's taking forever.
infid
ubuntu comes w browsers iirc
v1k1ng
infid: why would that happen? there's no proxy in this apartment.
infid
like w3m
your isp
v1k1ng
infid: ahh ok. i'll look for that.
infid: it's not my ISPs homepage though, it's a weird black-and-white site.
infid
its text based
v1k1ng
infid: thanks. i will start up the terminal and try it.
infid
install live http headers in ff and replay how it redirects
v1k1ng
ugh, internet's really slow.
infid: damn w3m is doing the same thing, but there are no images on the site i'm redirected to. it's all in the terminal.
ok. so its not firefox
infid
what url is it going to
v1k1ng
http://meningrey.net
always there.
infid
they have a myspace and facebook page according to google
dunno how that would happen though
have you visited that site on purpose before
and have you installed any firefox addons yet
v1k1ng
infid: anyway, thanks. i'll stick to wired connection for now!
infid: no i've never been there. i didn't click on it in case the site had malware
infid
do you have anohter computer
v1k1ng
infid: yes, the one thats on the wired connection. that never redirects, just really slow.
its been like that all day.
infid
sounds like you got malware somehow, in ubuntu, weird... idk. check your syslogs for sure
oh
v1k1ng
i installed a rootkit checker and also did what a friend said, to remove the entire /home/me/.firefox directory and reinstall
infid
and check /etc/hosts
v1k1ng
one moment
infid: that all looks OK to me. no mention of that site or any IPs
(except local host)
infid
might have to grep every file on your system for meningrey
v1k1ng
damn. sounds like my saturday night is going bad.
infid
it could go pretty fast
juse use like find(1) on files
v1k1ng
ok.
i can feel 48h of pain ahead of me if it's malware :(
Ubuntu is pretty secure isn't it?
i was using a Mac before. people told me that Ubuntu was just as or more secure.
infid
it's only as secure as how often you update and if you set up your firewall right
v1k1ng
ok
infid
and don't tamper with permissions
v1k1ng
i really need to school up on all this stuff.
infid
have you enabled ufw
v1k1ng
no
infid
might wanna start there
v1k1ng
i just installed it a week ago
infid: ok i will.
thanks again. needs to be more people like you around IRC!
i'm going to go offline now in case anything bad is happening in the background. then i'm going to run find and read about ufw.
infid: gn
