hi. is it normal for ffox 3.6 to get randomly stuck for random amounts of time while reloading a page?
or, to rephrase, will firefox ever have some sort of non-blocking javascript implementation, so that one badly written page doesn't paralyze the whole browser with 20-30 loaded sites?
raboof
weren't there plans to replace the current javascript engine with teremin?
uh
tamarin :)
e-cat
apparently not
no, the problem is deeper... one page getting stuck in some javascript loop should not make all, even unrelated pages, stuck
since i can't normally open 2 instances of firefox... if i have just one page full of interactive junk, i can't do anything - even flash gets stuck on other pages
rjohnson19
you are looking for processes per tab? thats a long ways off sadly :(
e-cat
no, process per tab is called chrome...
but multi-threading javascript engine would probably solve that
Cork[home]
firefox already have multi threading javascript
its called workers
but thats still not per tab
e-cat
this basically means i need to have 2 different browsers
since i can't run firefox multi-instance
Cork[home]
sure you can

e-cat
different profiles?
Cork[home]
ya
and starting the second profile with -no-remote
e-cat
which means?
Cork[home]
<first profile> firefox | <second profile> firefox -no-remote -P <profile name> | <third profile> firefox -no-remote -P <profile name | ...
e-cat
oh i see
a bit hacky solution...
unfortunately i don't have the time or resources to try and track the bottleneck in firefox source... a bit too big :)
Cork[home]
bottleneck?
e-cat
the part that causes the lock in my case
maybe it's just one of the addons
or some special case that needs to get handled
Cork[home]
you could try noscript, it does wonders to loading speed
abp helps too
e-cat
hehe, that's true... i already use flashblock (that works only 90% of the time)
Cork[home]
^AdBlock Plus
e-cat
but noscript basically means i see nopages :)
Cork[home]
well you can flip it if you prefer
e-cat
most forums, blogs and even google are full of javascript
Cork[home]
so it only blocks pages you list
e-cat
i guess i'll try that
thanks
Sjors
Hi
meh, irc.mozilla.org, and #thunderbird doesn't exist here
e-cat
oh, finally... new tabs open next to the tab that opened them
winXPuser
want to open them at end of all tabs?
1) go to about:config
2) set "browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent" to false
3) restart
e-cat: does it help?
e-cat
thanks, but i do like the new way
dolske
\o/

winXPuser
?
dolske
someone who appreciates the new tab ordering.
winXPuser
I see.
Gibby
is there a thunderbird channel?
TannerF
(Action) points Gibby to the topic
winXPuser
Gibby : irc://irc.mozilla.org/thunderbird
Gibby
winXPuser thanks
winXPuser
you're welcome :)
Gibby
tried #mozilla but said invite only
winXPuser
interesting
Gibby
was on the wrong server for thunderbird
winXPuser
no, irc://irc.mozilla.org/mozilla is not invite only
TannerF
Its because #mozilla was founded my a non-mozilla person
or asked to be blocked my a mozilla person
mikelifeguard
What file stores firefox bookmarks on Windows?
rjohnson19
places.sqlite
mikelifeguard
I imagine FF can import an old places.sqlite file then? Or does it need to be some special exported format?
TannerF
Should work.
mikelifeguard
hmph, where should I be looking for that file?
(Action) doesn't know where profile is stored on Windows
winXPuser
um a moment
TannerF
its in your profile
mikelifeguard: are you on 3.6?
winXPuser
A profile stores your settings, extensions, application data, bookmarks, email, and so on. More information at http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles
The default location of the Firefox profile is %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\.
mikelifeguard
TannerF: yes
winXPuser
%APPDATA% is shorthand for the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\ folder (Windows 7/Vista) or the C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\ folder (Windows XP/2000), which depends on your Windows user account name.
TannerF
mikelifeguard: about:support
mikelifeguard
nice
thanks
TannerF
winXPuser: stop spamming, and stop c/ping from sumo
and click on the profile button
winXPuser
ok stop spamming, but "c/ping from sumo" what is it?
TannerF
copy and pasting from sumo
support.mozilla.com
winXPuser
ok
halberd
so... I was setting up a VPN to work from my linux laptop
steps are as follows: 1. obtain a cert using IE , 2. export it as a .pfx and transfer it to the latop, 3. add it to my personal certs in the browser
firefox fails with an unknown error, while opera correctly prompts me for the password and adds the cert and then can successfully use it
any idea?

i;ve found a weird bug wiuth firefox
Gilamonster
good morning
Gryllida
I am requesting a @firefox/developers/gryllida cloak.
Gilamonster
?
Gryllida
instead of the @123.208.57.1 I currently have.
Gilamonster
oh now I get it
Gryllida
Gilamonster: this is a request to aaan administrator here, and if you have a firefox question, repeat it, I can try to help you.
Gilamonster
well I did some research about it on the net
Gryllida
I don't know your question, I just arrived here, keep this in misnd.
*mind.
So I will be able to help once I SEE the question....
Gilamonster
but apparently there is no cure for it just yet, that is if I want to keep using 3.6
ok
well I want to open a local html file
by just clicking on it
Gryllida
What happens?
Gilamonster
but 3.6 fails to do that on mac
Gryllida
It should work, what happens?
Gilamonster
he focusses on firefox
but doesn't open the file
Gryllida
Let me think.
Gilamonster
it's a know problem
Gryllida
Aa, do you know the bug number?
Gilamonster
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/1/568786 it's this one
Gryllida
Do you have spaces in the file path too?
Gilamonster
nope
oh wait
I thought it said the file name
ok yes it's that :)
removed the spaces
now it works
Gryllida
Nice, just I reread the bug 530064, good.
Gilamonster
but it used to work with spaces
so I wonder why they changed that
Gryllida
Yes, this is known issue.
I think this changed accidentally. I think it will get fixed quite soon. Target milestone: mozilla1.9.3a1.
Gilamonster
ok I really hope they do :)
since I test a lot of stuff local
Gryllida
The bug already has an assignee. :)
Gilamonster
thanks for helping Gryllida
Gryllida
You are welcome, Gilamonster.
Gilamonster
silly spaces :p I try to avoid them as much as possible and they keep bugging me
Gryllida
Okay, I get much more odd things when developing my addons. This is completely okay. :P
Gilamonster
do you know nasa night launch?
Gryllida
I guess no. What is it?
firebot google nasa night launch
um, oops! fu, I'm so used to firebot on the other network.
Gilamonster
np :)
Gryllida
<firebot>Gryllida: NASA Night Launch :: Add-ons for Firefox -- https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/4908
Gilamonster
it was an add-on but I think I deleted it
Gryllida
Really?
No, you did not.
Gilamonster
since it's one of the many that stopped working :(
Gryllida
It is there. :)
Gilamonster
it was cooler then these personas
Gryllida
Stopped working? Why? How?
Gilamonster
since it changed also my scrollbars and the loading animation
but I'm trying to reinstall it now
Gryllida
Okay.
Gilamonster
maybe they fixed it since the launch of 3.6
lol remember me sticking to version 2 of ff untill I accidently clicked on update :p
ah it works again, wow I'm happy now :)
Gryllida
Good!
Gilamonster
you're nice
Gryllida
ff2 to ff3 update is a known issue. it was just a popup in right bottom. Now, the updates make a big popup appear in center. This is fixed already.
Gilamonster
well no Gryllida I didn't want to update, so I always clicked the window away
I was just being stubborn
Gryllida
Haha. How do you find FF3? Do you like its new features?
Gilamonster
I mean I'm always complainging about people still using ie6, but I refused to update my own ff :p
I think I like it
Gryllida
Haha, well I was not using IE7 or 8 anyway....
Only IE6 too.
Gilamonster
no just some customers of mine, who can't install anything on their computer because they aren't allowed to
Gryllida
Yes, IE is quite difficult to update. In firefox, you just hit help - check for updaates, and in IE, you do what? Log in as admin, then find it in the list of windows updates. No, I can't even think about that...
I mean IE6 to 7 to 8 updating.
Gilamonster
I only use ie for testing
Gryllida
IE was where I started web development many years ago. But Firefox quickly got my attention then, it has so many addons. Very useful for many things.
Gilamonster
yes, that makes me wonder, will firebug be supported again?
Gryllida
Is it not? wait.
<Gryllida>firebot amo firebug <firebot>Gryllida: Firebug :: Add-ons for Firefox -- https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843
Gilamonster
well I've got 1.3.1 maybe it's the version
Gryllida
Works with Firefox: 3.5 3.6.*
1.5.3
Gilamonster
oh I got an old version again
Gryllida
Um a moment.
Tools, Options, Advanced. Update. What do you see there?
Gilamonster
not that I use it much I just miss the bug icon :p
Gryllida
I see.
Checking this options line that I wrote several seconds ago?
Gilamonster
yes
but I'm not finding it
I'm having an other language of ff
subone
My firefox crashes anytime I open a Java page. Someone said "Which JRE are you using and have you symlinked the plugin ? (it will crash if you copy the plugin because the plugin can't find the JRE)" What's my next step? How can I fix this?
Gryllida
Do you see Java at about:plugins ?
Gilamonster: this is rightmose prefpane, third tab.
*rightmost
Gilamonster
ok Gryllida found it, it was hidden under firefox>preferences >advanced>update
Gryllida
Okay, good. set it to something sensible. :)
subone
I see "IcedTea Java Web Browser Plugin" thats all
Gilamonster
ok checked on the add ons and ff updates
Gryllida
subone: maybe you could un-install JRE and install it again.
For it to see Firefox.
subone
Gryllida, i will check on how it is installed currently....
Gryllida
Gilamonster: good, now it should notify you about addon updates via a right bottom popup.
Gilamonster
great :)
brah-
right I right click a link
to open in a new tab
it opens in a existing tab...how can I have it open a new tab like before
Gryllida
Middle-click it?
Ctrl+Click it?
