about:crashes doesnt exist
neither does the directory I am wondering if i might have a bogus firefox at this point
brlancer
I believe about:crashes is only in development builds
Cork[home]
no
its in releases too
brlancer
if it works properly in safe mode then Firefox itself is fine, the problem is within an add-on (theme/extension) or plugin
Cork[home]
about:crashes has been out since 3.0 at least (don't remember exactly when it was added)
brlancer
then I stand corrected
Cork[home]
harry-houdini1: what os are you running)
?
brlancer
harry-houdini1: and what were you doing when it crashed in safe mode?
Cork[home]
linux distro releases have crash reporter disabled
so that might be what causes you not to have this page or folders

harry-houdini1
its been doing this crap for the last two versions but worse in 3.6 crashes all the time even in safe mode when I go to www.slashdot.org it always crashes
brlancer
harry-houdini1: have you created a new profile to test?
harry-houdini1
i have ubuntu 10.04 and i have tried sudo aptitude remove --purge firefox-3.6 and also sudo rm -rf .firefox
brlancer
ok then
Cork[home]
.firefox??
the profiles should be in .mozilla not .firefox
harry-houdini1
ah that would explain in it sorry
Cork[home]
well they should be in ~/.mozilla/Firefox to be exact :)
s/Firefox/firefox/
harry-houdini1
its ok i purged and removed the whole damn thing would rather loose it than have these problems so lets see...
brlancer
harry-houdini1: you've hit the two most basic troubleshooting - re-install and create a new profile
if you create a new profile and it's still an issue, Ubuntu is going to be a better place to hit first; since they're building it, there may be something particular to their build
they may have also found something more general which is affecting their build more often
(but safe mode + new profile fixes damned near everything)
Cork[home]
ya, most problems come from extensions or plugins
can't wait for firefox 3.6.4 :>
(it will start shipping oopp out to the big masses)
harry-houdini1
how would i purge namaroka manually ? got directions?
Cork[home]
purging the distro release of firefox isn't nessesary
just rename the profile folder or delete it
and do a complere reinstall from the apt-get
that should fix everything you can fix from there
if that doesn't help you can always try extracting a mozilla release
and see if you get the same problem there
(you can't replace the distro release though)
brlancer
apt-get --purge won't remove any plugins/extensions/themes installed system-wide
Cork[home]
well theres rarly gets installed system wide
but true plugins will be a problem
but they are almost always linked into the installation anyway
harry-houdini1
I see this link /usr/bin/firefox -> ../lib/firefox-3.6.4pre/firefox.sh but i cannot do sudo nano ../lib/firefox-3.6.4pre/firefox.sh
Cork[home]
hmm
your sure about.sh?
yup
harry-houdini1: what happens?
that should work just fine
harry-houdini1
ls: cannot access ../lib/: No such file or directory
I am beginning to think this is not a real firefox
Cork[home]
and you where located in /usr/bin when you did this?
else you need to use /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.4pre/firefox.sh
harry-houdini1
could you explain that i have never seen that before
Cork[home]
you have a symlink in /usr/bin/firefox that links from /usr/bin to ../lib
its as simple as that

harry-houdini1
how come the symlink shows up as ../lib instead of /usr/bin/..
Cork[home]
as thats what it is
its a symlink that points .. (up one folder) then /lib/firefox...
harry-houdini1
so up one folder from /usr/bin/ you mean?
Cork[home]
ya
harry-houdini1
ok i guess i missed that course...
Cork[home]
ist not an absolute path
its relative from the symlinks position
harry-houdini1
ah ok so /usr/bin/firefox .. would be /usr/bin.... ok
Cork[home]
well ya if /usr/bin/firefox as a folder ya ;)

hey guys is there a way to make "print to file" the default printer in firefox ?
i'm using FF3.5.9 on ubuntu 9.10
manxpower
Where in Thunderbird do you disable sending of HTML formatted messages. Want to set the default to plaintext.
Peng_
Hmm.
manxpower: Edit -> Account Settings -> Composition & Addressing, at least in version 2.
Brimstones
Why isnt this option "File -> Print Options -> Only Print Marked" In the first print tab. Along with "Only this page", "Pages X - X" ??????
Makes no sence

Kovensky: os? what version of Firefox, if linux NSS version?
Kovensky
kbrosnan: freebsd, 3.6.3
nss 3.12.6
kbrosnan
weave version?
Kovensky
latest from amo, so 1.2.1 I think
kbrosnan
that sounds correct
and nss is in sync with the the gecko version
Kovensky
probably
Peng_
Does Weave have C bits that somebody forgot to compile for FreeBSD?
Kovensky
though nss was built from ports, firefox was installed as a binary package
firefox's build failed with an ICE because cc1plus allocated over 2.5G of memory and crashed with ENOMEM
wlel, over 2G

Kovensky: give the 1.3 experimental verison a try. i believe that has a refactoring of some os specific c code to js. https://mozillalabs.com/weave/

Kovensky
I'm on freebsd 8-stable (should have little difference from 8.0)
kbrosnan
#labs on irc.mozilla.org and http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla-labs-weave are places where weave is discussed
i don't see bsd mentioned in the mailing list
Kovensky
is irc.mozilla.org linked to another network?
(so I know if I'm already indirectly on it)
kbrosnan
no
Kovensky
ok
I guess today is the day I run out of shortcut keys on irssi :)
on 96 channels already (using a hack that gives me shortcuts to up to 100 channels)
kbrosnan
oh, link to that?

MercedesBenz
how to hide Google Search window ?
I mean that one in Google Maps
I can use Full Screen
but in Google Aerial there is no full screen
and I can't get rid of that annoying search
which takes 20% of my screen
Kovensky
on the fbsd topic, I actually wonder if it's a good idea to run firefox on what's supposed to be a server, but i digress :)
MercedesBenz
yeah
Google Aerial etc are like from server
but I just want to get rid that annoying google search bar
how to do it in firefox?
Kovensky
(Action) never heard about google aerial
MercedesBenz
F11 get rids only half of the bar
really?
I enjoy it right now
Kovensky
is that "annoying google search bar" the google toolbar?
MercedesBenz
http://googlegeodevelopers.blogspot.com/2010/01/getting-better-view-in-sacramento.html
Kovensky
or one in the webpage itself?
MercedesBenz
just press New button in Google Maps in right up
and add Aerial Enable
and here you got 5 cities to enjoy so much.
Google maps sucks vs Google Aerial. Totally.
yeah
Kovensky
my city uses low-res imagery from 2007 and the area near my house is covered in clouds :(
MercedesBenz
google toolbar with search
don't worry they will come with aerial some day
Kovensky
do yourself a favor and uninstall that toolbar :)
MercedesBenz
thats not my toolbar
thats google
ok I will press F11
and make you print screen now
Kovensky
is it on the browser window or on the page itself
MercedesBenz
and give a link ok
wait a minute
http://www.rolijona.lt/google_bar.jpg
this is with F11
on my "22 inch 1680*1050 monitor
FireFox 3.6.3
20% of space I can't stand it
I need every pixel of data
for my print screens (possible in the future)
unless you know other way to take data from google server and stich together
to make bigger image
in own hdd.
Kovensky
that bar; then it's part of the webpage
MercedesBenz
yeah it is
Kovensky
there should either be something in the page to hide it (I don't see it at least), or you could try looking on userscripts.org
MercedesBenz
ghm
well in google maps and google streets they have Full Screen
maybe I will await for Full screen in Aerial
and leave it to google
damm it i lost so many inches on that bar
Kovensky
and lulz, american architecture looks so different from my local architecture...
MercedesBenz
yeah
but from sky, the region looks totally cool
my country has no such good city planning at all
Kovensky
o_O
joining irc.mozilla.org completely confused xchat
TannerF
how?
(It works for me, i'm in ~15 channels there)
Kovensky
I think I did it wrong though
I forgot to open a new tab when I told it to connect
so it replaced freenode's connection
mconnor
Kovensky: hey, I don't think we explicitly recognize freebsd in the js component, yet
dmkae
hi
mconnor
Kovensky: also, the JS component only works with trunk builds
firedealer
I created a file link and I clicked, the alert message pop "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol isn't associated with any program." Question is how can I make it work?
kmccoy
So, I'm trying to figure out how Firefox and Google Maps knows my location. The only clue I can think of is that it knows the location of my wifi router, but I live in the middle of nowhere. Doesn't Google only record wifi locations with its Street View cars? There's no Street View near me.
firedealer
I suspect it has to do with your IP.
kmccoy
Oh, right, that was the other option, but my IP doesn't geolocate very well, because I use satellite internet and they don't seem to have location-specific IP pools. And my location is almost exact. Like, within 15 meters.
firedealer
Hmm
kmccoy
When I go to the various geolocation web sites, they have my IP all over the place, from California to Colorado to South Dakota. I've rarely seen it even hit my home state of MN, let alone anywhere near me.
firedealer
Maybe your router have GPS. Just kidding.
kmccoy
heheh
firedealer
I'm pretty new to geolocate stuff. I haven't investigate it around before I approve it to running.
kmccoy
I think it's great stuff. I'm just shocked that it works so well for me at home here. This is the first time I've been home to try it for quite a while.
firedealer
Let's see Google Maps with my geolocation
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/geolocation/
kmccoy
Yeah, I've looked at that. I just can't figure out how my wifi network is in Google's database without a Street View car having driven my street.
firedealer
Latitude and longitude
kmccoy
Well, latitude and longitude are where I am, but I'm trying to figure out how it's determined.
firedealer
Ah, understood. Good luck on finding. It's cool thing.
kmccoy
Thanks! :)
AngryParsley
kmccoy: google probably got data from other people that do wifi mapping as well
like skyhook
kmccoy
Yeah, I was thinking that might be the case, but from places I've read, it seemed a bit unlikely, because it seems like they're pretty much direct competitors in that. I saw one application that talks about location services that it uses now, and it lists Google, then ones planned in the future, and it lists Skyhook.
I also can't imagine someone from Skyhook mapping the road I live on, but I suppose it's possible.
I wish there was a way to directly query the location database.
voker57
how to force firefox to use SSL certificate even if server did not request it?
Cork[home]
voker57: uhh... you can't
the server has to support it for it to work
if the server support it, and you change the protocol to https you will use certs
