clever: i'm not totally sure were talking about the same thing tyough
clever: i basicly just thought it would be sweet to be able to start a browser with a username as an option, apart from the gmail url....

how do i get the cross hair up in firefox/os x for use with web dev so i can inspect css visually?
kbrosnan

yeps
maybe i need https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6622/ first
its the equiv of ctrl+shift+y on pc
kbrosnan
was going to say i have not used wdt in some time, but what you are describing is more of a feature of the dom inspector or firebug
flaccid
yeah how do i get the crosshair with dom inspector on mac?
kbrosnan
open the inspector window
enter the address (or select from the file menu) press inspect
then press the square box with the pointer in it
click on the element you are interested in
flaccid
that works but is a lot more to do and not as graceful as it is on windows or linux
i can just do it on the current page by pressing ctrl+shift+y and it highlights each block as i hover and tells me the node and then i can click on it to get the css
this won't do the css
man this is a big mystery
kbrosnan
maybe it was some other extension
flaccid
nope, all i had to do was install wdt
guess i'll have to do it in a vm
kbrosnan
might have a differnt shortcut on os x, i don't have access to it
flaccid
yeah its annoying
kbrosnan
ask in the dev's forum http://chrispederick.com/forums/viewforum.php?id=12

Can I disable the functionality, that if I write something unrecogniced in the address bar a google search is made?
Or in other words, whenever I don't type an address into the address bar Google is notified what I type

on ubuntu 9.10, thunderbird 3.0, I click on a link and nothing happens (no browser is open). It was working last week or so

kbrosnan: thanks
One really has to work if one wants to take Google out of Firefox and I think that sucks
I hope at least those millions from Google to Mozilla foundarion are spent on salaries of honest, decent software engineers

more info: clicking a link in thunderbird 3 on ubuntu 9.10, I launched thunderbird from console and I see Couldn't load XPCOM
kbrosnan
TuomasT: all of the devs from mozilla that i have met are honest and passionate about open software
enriq: did you install any updates recently? might need a restart of the wm. there is a #thunderbird on irc.mozilla.org
enriq
hmmmm I don't keep track of updates really as they're automatic and happen all the time all over the software installed...
I'll ask in #thunderbird thanks
TuomasT
I'd like to see a little more passion on privacy and openness on the Google integration. For example, don't say "Block reported attacks sites" in the menu, but say "Block reported attacks sites (by Google)". And at least in the help page about security menu mention that the service is provided by Google and provide privacy information
kbrosnan
the database that is checked is on your local computer, only if the db returns a possible hit is google queried, even then 5 or so other possible matches are selected from the db and queried

kbrosnan: Yes, I've looked in that issue a bit. However, my issue was that how is the user to know about this if there isn't any information in the help?

JoeSomebody
hello, anyone know weave well?
kbrosnan
JoeSomebody: depends on the q
JoeSomebody
ok
still here?
i was wondering how the sync works, what takes priority? the newest passwords, etc. must be by date, right?
and do the others need to be online ?
i am assuming that the database sucks every thing out of all machines, and goes by date on changes?
mzz
I don't know about the "by date" part. Systems involved do not have to be online simultaneously (data is pushed/pulled to/from a server)
JoeSomebody
well, i am thinking how else could it know which password i want when i just changed one?
new pass must go to server at least
then other boxes have older pass amd it updates?
guess i'll find out
trying it now
i see - the second computer is giving me three choices
i think i should pick replace all data , the second one, if i don't need anything from this one, but then what hpppens after that? all new stuff goes to weave db and then to others regardless?

how do I reset the "undo close tab" history?
right now, FF is using 600+ MB, and I suspect its because I loaded then just now closed a tab with a lot of youtube embeds

I have Firefox 3.5.9 since a few days
And the urlbar has no autocompletion via bookmarks/history anymore
is that normal and if yes how can I quickly search in my history and bookmarks (or enable autocompletion) ?
kbrosnan
icehawk: edit > prefs > privacy > location bar > should say history and bookmarks
icehawk
it does
but the autocompletion is still not working :(
kbrosnan
icehawk: in the same window is remember history selected
icehawk
yes
JoeSomebody
well works great anyway, must be by date
kbrosnan
icehawk: if you press ctrl + h is there history listed
icehawk
sorry, connection loss, if someone replied to my last message, pls repeat
kbrosnan
icehawk: if you press ctrl + h is there history listed
icehawk
yes
including pages which match my search pattern

can someone tell me what are some of their favorites addons? OTHER than what i am using - adblock, noscript, stylish, download helper, febe, opie, weave, ebay toolbar ?
kbrosnan
icehawk: does the address bar work if you create a new profile? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles
icehawk
ok, I found the solution to my problem
JoeSomebody showed me how xD
(sometimes my brother uses my pc too and he doesn't liked something which pops up in Firefox...
JoeSomebody
i did? :)
icehawk
so he installed the extension "Annoyance remover" (with my permission), and I don't have to tell you, which "annoyance" it removed...
but JoeSomebody brought me to look at my addons :)
JoeSomebody
ah
icehawk
btw: if you read news in the net, Brief is a good RSS-Reader
;)
and I prefer it not to have too many extensions
as you see, it makes problems...
kbrosnan: thx for the help
Ganymede
hmm...is there a way to ask firefox to ALWAYS save images that i view into a certain folder? i don't want to have to explicitly right click it and do save-as, i want it so that if it's downloaded by firefox, it's saved
this includes images embedded into pages
err...by embedded, i mean with an <img> tag and a URL
should also include image placed into the page via AJAX (so basically, any HTTP GET that requests an image)
zjblabs
JoeSomebody, adblock and noscript :D
Ganymede
i know i can ask firefox to log all GETs but then i'd have to re-download them via wget or something and that would nearly double the load on the server

"www.example.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because it is self-signed" <-- Way to mislead, Firefox.
Why do you call it "invalid" just because it wasn't signed by an authority?
admishra
how can i use tor in firefox?
i have installed it but not working here
AVRS
admishra: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2275
admishra
AVRS: opening it, thanks :)
AVRS
no problem
admishra
AVRS: hi
AVRS
hi
admishra
AVRS: tor is still not working
AVRS: i have made enable tor
AVRS
I don't know what you have done.
Have you started Tor itself?
admishra
"Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections"
AVRS
Is Tor running?
admishra
i have installed it from yum command
no
just checking again ..
AVRS
Read the Torbutton help (probably at its site).
Well, there may be a package with Torbutton in the repository, too.
admishra
ohk
AVRS
And probably help for Tor in /usr/share/doc or something
admishra
ohk :)
AVRS
admishra: note the SOCKS use for DNS
admishra
means?
AVRS
so that DNS resolutions go through TOR, too.
Torbutton enables that together with Tor, I think.
admishra
hmm
may be
then what should i do now?
AVRS
maybe it uses Privoxy by default though (so you need Privoxy, too, if you want). IIRC, Privoxy does not support SOCKS, so the settings are a little different (the ports are different). Torbutton should have the proper settings by default.
admishra
then, cant we do it manually?
AVRS
admishra: I mean, if you don't use SOCKS, your ISP will see what you try to visit.
though only as domains
But it will be much faster.
admishra
okay
AVRS
(Or maybe not much, I don't remember. Maybe you could also use a DNS caching proxy&)
admishra
if i want to use a proxy server then just for now what should i do?
i have to use SOCKS or ...!!
AVRS
Maybe it will be better if you just read the documentation.
If it is not slower than usual, it probably does not work. :>
admishra
hmm getting that
well, thanks for that kind of help :)
AVRS
no problem
admishra
may i know from where you are?
AVRS
On Debian, I've looked through the configuration file of Tor, IIRC, but I don't remember if that was needed.
Why? Russia.
I've been starting Tor with /etc/init.d/tor start
admishra
but fedora is not debian, am right naa?
ohk
AVRS
admishra: https://www.torproject.org/documentation.html.en
admishra
here my terminal showing its starting status "failed"
AVRS
check the configuration files
admishra
from where i can?
