how can I browse a japanese site and see the japanese writing ?
I installed japanese language, yet toyota.jp doesnt show up chars
winXPuser
hm
for me it does show correct with en-US locale and I did not do anything about Japanese here in Firefox
maybe you try safe mode?
" Safe Mode (in supported Mozilla applications) is a good way to see if an add-on, theme or something else is causing a problem. Please see: http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode "
spersaud
charset=Shift_JIS
winXPuser: in Debian (Lenny) linux here
winXPuser
Japanese (EUC-JP) encoding here
spersaud
oh well will try that on my dads windows 7 laptop
Dresk
Oi, you guys going to make official Linux 64 bit releases?
winXPuser
hm
aren't official Linux packages available at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html ?
Dresk
You speak of blessing fair sir, but will autoupdate retain my 64-bit heritage?
winXPuser
hmm I am unsure, a moment please

winXPuser
As of Firefox 3.6, Mozilla does not have any official 64-bit builds available... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Firefox

On certain Flash-heavy sites, Ctrl-T doesn't work. Known problem?
Milos|Laptop
I'm trying to help a friend out with Private Browsing but he says it's greyed out and he can't click it.
Why would that be so?
winXPuser
hm
a moment
tell him to try safe mode - is the menu greyed out there?
Safe Mode (in supported Mozilla applications) is a good way to see if an add-on, theme or something else is causing a problem. Please see: http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
second suggestion:
Tools | Options | Privacy. If History is set to "Never Remember History," that is your problem. Select, "Use Custom Settings for History."
Milos|Laptop: does it help?
Milos|Laptop
winXPuser, ah, sorry, I did not realise you replied to me until now. It was the latter suggestions - "Never remember history".
s/suggestions/suggestion/
winXPuser
Select "Use Custom Settings for History."
Milos|Laptop
Yeah, that works. Thank you :)

winXPuser
and be sure to untick the "Automatically start Firefox in a Private Browsing Session" box.
Milos|Laptop
Yup.
Thanks winXPuser :)
winXPuser
ok :)
oops!
gavin: update the topic here too
3.6.3, not 3.6.2 :)
thanks :)
solrize
is there a way to snapshot the contents of the browser buffer to disk? i.e. i want to save what i see in the browser directly from the browser, not "save page" which re-retrieves it from the internet
purplebluesilver
haha solrize I've wondered that for years
it's annoying cause it's already there
solrize
it's bloody broken because it tries to get every resource that the page refers to, but can't get them because i use adblock
so it gives up and says it can't even save the page
but even if it could, it's still lame behavior, it should just dump from memory
delfick
Hi, does anyone know of anything out there in the internet that contrasts the speed of different javascript engines between say 2007 when they started to get really fast and now ?
winXPuser
firebot google speed of different javascript engines
fu oops
John Resig - JavaScript Engine Speeds -- http://ejohn.org/blog/javascript-engine-speeds/
delfick
I keep finding things that compare the speed between browsers
but not over time
and when I compare results of different tests taken from blog posts written at different times, they don't seem to ever be in a comparable format
winXPuser
That's not surprising, but
delfick
winXPuser
I suggest you find a testing thing, install firefox 1, 2, and 3, and run the testing thing today
delfick
yah
winXPuser
run it for these browsers - todaay - on modern test
but on old browsers
which are still available for download
delfick
yeah, I have been searching for quite a while and not found anything
(didn't want to have to run tests myself :p)
winXPuser
I guess this is the most realistic thing to do - the test yourself
I have no cue about what else to do...
delfick
yeah, fair enough
thnx anyways

Hi, I reported a Firefox bug some time ago. I've just been asked to use the latest trunk to do a test. This installed Minefield. Sadly no improvement with the bug but I lost Firebug, Chatzilla etc. (They don't work with the latest trunk). So I thought I could run my 3.6 FF. But every link and even the firefox.exe runs the Minefield version (obviously installed in its own minefield folder)....
...Why has Minefield taken over?
I expected to be able to run any version.
winXPuser
I see.
srsm
WindowsXP
winXPuser
err what is there? I guess it should start with checking that there is no folder like C:/programs/mozillafirefox/minefield/firefox.exe and that the only firefox.exe is in C:/programs/mozillafirefox/firefox.exe
is it true?
srsm
Crumbs. Just tried to run an old FF2 version which I kept in the past for testing. This link also runs whatever latest version. winXPuser - I have C:/program files/minefield - C:/program files/Mozilla Firefox - C:/program files/Mozilla Firefox 2. I'm sure that a year ago or so I could run any version I wanted. Now only the latest runs. Presumably a Registry thing.
Is it possible to run two different versions of FF on WinXP? It used to be.
winXPuser
reading it now
Is there a firefox.exe inside of " C:/program files/minefield" ?
srsm
WinXPuser: Yes.
winXPuser
srsm: can you launch C:/program files/Mozilla Firefox/firefox.exe ?
Kano
hi, who had the idea to block access to bug #555109 when it is even mentioned in the changelog?
winXPuser
try irc://irc.mozilla.org/bmo ?
srsm
Well I've re-installed 3.6.3 so if I run minefield/firefox.exe the 3.6.3 version runs. Same if I click the FF2 version. Last installed version runs (not the latest (newest) version). So something must intercept the startup and find the last installed Firefox and run that instead of the one double clicked (this also rules out shortcuts being re-routed).
winXPuser
when running the 3.6.3 by double-click , do you have something wrong in its behaavior?
srsm
Nope. Everything runs fine.
winXPuser
Do you have firebug and ChatZilla there?
e.g. and everything else needed?
in 3.6.3?
when running the 3.6.3 by double-click?
it is completely okay now?
srsm
Yes last installed version 3.6.3 is perfect. But every shortcut, link or firefox.exe runs only the last installed version (whatever that is). I assume "last version installed only runs" is a surprise to you. It would be odd for everyone testing Minefield to lose any chance of running a stable version. Very odd.
winXPuser
uninstall minefield and it will get okay?
srsm
winXPuser: (keep getting disturbed). No, I haven't uninstalled minefield. Unfortunately I haven't ran my older FF2 etc for a long time so cannot tell if the minefield install process somehow changed the way FF in general runs.
dictionaryword
how do i find out why firefox uses 99% cpu and responds slowly? all i've found by searching is pages like http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+consumes+a+lot+of+CPU+resources that assume i've already found what's causing the problem
poutine
dictionaryword, in my experience, it's been flash that is usually the culprit
relaxed
Anyone know why http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.6.3/source is missing?
rajeshsr
hi
kbrosnan
the file is uploaded manually last i knew. the build team might be busy
you can check out http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-1.9.2/rev/28ef231a65a3
rajeshsr
i want to snoop through gmail and see how buzzing works. I am planning to write some user script with it. Alas, firebug seems too heavy and slows down completely. Any other addon, you recommend?
kbrosnan
venkman?
dictionaryword
poutine: ok, how do i find which pages have tried to load a flash object?
kbrosnan
tools > addons > plugins > flash > disable
poutine
dictionaryword, you got me, you could disable flash and see if you can reproduce without it enabled
kbrosnan
see if that prevents the issue
dictionaryword
i would love to blame flash or java or whatever, but i can't figure out if that's the case
kbrosnan
well the only way to tell would be to disable it and see if that prevents the issue?
disturb
hi folks
dictionaryword
i would disable addons to test if i knew of a page that would definitely crash firefox
disturb
I can't find the chrome attribute that'd disables both scrollbars
dictionaryword
right now it's a complete mystery
kbrosnan
well the only other thing i could suggest is Firefox's safe mode or a new profile http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic+troubleshooting
dictionaryword
i have no idea what i would even do if i found out it's a flash applet that screws it up? block the applet? disable flash? i have no idea
yeah i read that page
kbrosnan
you will need to do some testing. there is no way for us to tell what is causing trouble on your system without you doing some troubeshooting steps
dictionaryword
it basically just says turn it off and on again, with no way to determine what caused the problem other than several months of trial and error
well, it works now, since i restarted firefox and it refused to load any of the previous session from cache
i knew i couldn't reproduce it
how do i find out what's causing firefox to use 99% cpu? whenever i to find a specific web page that's doing it, i can't.
hmm, i meant to have "try" in there somewhere
poutine
it's either that or constantly run it through a profiler
and even then, the profiler could cause increased CPU usage
dictionaryword
either what or what? what's a profiler?
poutine
<dictionaryword> it basically just says turn it off and on again, with no way to determine what caused the problem other than several months of trial and error
or...
use a profiler
you can google what a profiler is
ronnie_vd_c
im running firefox minefield. Can i enable webGL with a videocard (intel GMA 4500M) that only supports OpenGL2.0?
dictionaryword
have you actually used one? i did google it, but i'm having trouble finding out what profiler i would use and how it would work
poutine
yes I have used one, I don't know what the best one to use for a project as large as firefox though, gprof is an example of one, although I don't think it'd be the best tool for the job.
you'll likely need to be able to compile firefox with debugging and or the profiling library symbols, and even then, the very act of observing it through a profiler might cause enhanced CPU usage, and false positives
dictionaryword
wow cool, all the instructions for gprof involve linux or something
is it even possible to troubleshoot firefox on windows?
poutine
dictionaryword, I really think it's beyond your capabilities
kbrosnan
really trying the simpler troubleshooting steps that have been suggested would be best
dictionaryword
no it isn't
which simpler troubleshooting steps? i tried the stuff on http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting and i couldn't even reproduce the problem
kbrosnan
ronnie_vd_c: about:config, webgl.enabled_for_all_sites and visit one of the webgl test sites
ronnie_vd_c
yes, i tried: http://www.ambiera.at/copperlicht/demos/demo_quakelevel_external.html
and got the following message:
Sorry, your browser does not appear to support WebGL (or it is disabled). You can get a list of supported browsers here.
kbrosnan
ronnie_vd_c: i think they have bad ua detection
ronnie_vd_c
another error on: http://people.mozilla.com/~vladimir/webgl/spore/sporeview.html
Can't find a WebGL context; is it enabled?
kbrosnan
might see if there is a mesa lib for your computer
ronnie_vd_c
how to do that. im running Ubuntu 9.01
9.10*
kbrosnan
http://packages.ubuntu.com/source/karmic/mesa
set the preference webgl.osmesalib to the path
ronnie_vd_c
which package do i need, i have already installed libgl1-mesa-glx, libgl1-mesa-dri, mesa-utils, libglu1-mesa. but "locate mesa" wont give me any lib i can set the path to
kbrosnan: and in /usr/lib/ i cant find any folder called mesa
kbrosnan
this is a bit of a guess. I have a decent video card that provides a decent openGL
ronnie_vd_c
i cant find anything related on the internet..
dogon
hi, I'm looking for a little help: I have Firefox 3.6.3 and I'm having trouble viewing the browsing history... I've been using FireFox for years, but the view history issue has just started happening. Has anybody seen this problem?
When I say I'm having "trouble" I mean that Searching and Viewing by Last Visited does not work
Can anybody help me with FireFox? It's not showing the browsing history correctly: I can't search the history and I can't sort by "Last Visited" and "Most Visited"
Kingstone
hey guys, i think there's a bug in firefox in 3.6+ versions maybe you can help
xangua
if you have a bug report maybe bugzilla or mozilla irc network ( irc.mozilla.org ) would be better
Kingstone
i saw in google references forum that someone exprienced it as well
i try to find if it's already in bugzilla, but it's pretty hard to search there
kbrosnan
Kingstone: saying what you are seeing would be best
Kingstone
when i try to download a file
firefox gets stuck for one minute
then pops up a message, say a script is stuck
Script: chrome://mozapps/content/downloads/download.xml:68
A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.
and that's it
ziro`
anyone know an addon to show response time in the status bar?
FrozenFire[work]
I've done a bit of Googling, and haven't found a shred of documentation on how to configure and use Bindwood for Firefox. Anyone know of where to find the documentation?
kbrosnan
what is bindwood?
FrozenFire[work]
It's an extension that takes care of syncing bookmarks between systems using CouchDB
I had intended to set it up to use the Ubuntu One CouchDB, so I could keep my laptop and desktop synced
The extension doesn't seem to provide a configuration means through the "preferences" interface of the add-ons list
sdwilsh
what about just using Weave?
kbrosnan
looks to be something ubuntu specific
#ubuntu or maybe #ubuntu-mozillateam
FrozenFire[work]
sdwilsh, I've had bad experiences with Weave
kbrosnan
Kingstone: does it still hang if you use a new profile? https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles
FrozenFire[work]
It severely messed up my home Firefox instance
sdwilsh
recently, or before it's 1.0?
