hi, I have java 1.4 installed and Internet Explorer correctly loads applets. Firefox wants to manually install java... how can i re-use the installed vm?
kbrosnan
java 1.4 won't work for recent firefox releases
firefox 3.6 requires java 6 update 15 (1.6.0.15) http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+the+Java+plugin+with+Firefox
or higher
becks`
oh.. ok thanks :( it's a corporate installation and i hate messing around with java ;)
auscompgeek
Slap the company for exposing you to security bugs :P
antiroach
im trying to find the add-on that prevents firefox from killing current downloads when closing the last open firefox window and not having the download window open. can anyone help?
kbrosnan
firefox should warn in that case
antiroach
it doesnt, maybe it did in the past, but maybe ive disabled it
im using the linux version, not sure if it matters. version 3.5
kbrosnan
hm might not
antiroach
i know ive downloaded an add-on before that simply opened the download tab before closing the last firefox window. just cant find it again

haavaros
How do I change the way ctrl-tab cycles through tabs? I want it to cycle between the latest used tabs
smw_
is there any way to print a website from the commandline?
does anyone know if there is a way to change some about:config variables from the command line at start?
auscompgeek
You can use a user.js file to force it to be permanent, or append to prefs.js to let the user change it.
smw_
auscompgeek: I am right now trying to print from the command line. What is the easiest way to do this? Is there a way to script the pressing of buttons?
auscompgeek
You could automate it using AutoIt...
smw_
is there a way to activate a button of an extention I have installed?
auscompgeek
:S
smw_
auscompgeek: autoit on linux?
auscompgeek
er...
smw_
lol
auscompgeek
you could write an extension that accepts a switch passed to firefox...
smw_
auscompgeek: I found one http://sites.google.com/site/torisugari/commandlineprint2
the issue is that it STILL requires you to press buttons
in other words, it is useless :-\
auscompgeek
:S
smw_
even imacros fails
imacros can not print in firefox!
auscompgeek: I DID IT! lol
auscompgeek
:D
smw_
auscompgeek: I only needed to install the cli plugin, create a new profile, and edit the about:config :-\
This is why I was asking about sending about:config vars through the cli
this is going to be run from a script, and portability would be nice
auscompgeek: and I would still like to select a button in an extention if possible
is it possible to refer to a button through a chrome url?
Random832
so... trying to select all or programmatically clear a large textarea (300kb) seems to hang firefox
like, dead.
smw_
is it possibe to "browse" chrome links? I want to know all the chrome links for an extention
auscompgeek
you can open up the extension's directory and browse that...
smw_
auscompgeek: but how can I translate that into a url?
I found the extention
but I need that to be converted to a chrome url

auscompgeek
smw_: if you look in chrome.manifest, it shouldn't be too hard.
smw_
It is
lol
auscompgeek
well, once you understand the syntax >.<
smw_
:-P
do you understand it?
auscompgeek
of course.
smw_
content uniprint jar:chrome/uniprint.jar!/content/
that points to a jar file in the extention directory
how can I convert it to a chrome url
or figure out what a button uses as a url
Random832
i think you need a jar url with a chrome url to the jar inside it
auscompgeek
chrome://uniprint/content/ points to jar:chrome/uniprint.jar!/content/
that's all it says.
Random832
auscompgeek: so jar relatives are automatically relative to the chrome dir?
i thought you could have a jar url to anywhere
auscompgeek
you can.
smw_
auscompgeek: I am getting closer
Random832
what if you have folders under chrome/?
does it probe each path component of the chrome url to see if it's a jar or a folder?
smw_
auscompgeek: chrome://uniprint/content/ redirected me to chrome://uniprint/content/uniprint.xul
auscompgeek
Random832: then you don't use jar:
Random832
huh?
smw_
now I need to figure out what the button uses!
Random832
no i mean when you've got the chrome://url
how does it tell if it should be jar:chrome/uniprint.jar!/content/ or jar:chrome/uniprint/content.jar!/
auscompgeek
Random832: chrome.manifest dictates everything ;)
Random832
or whatever else if there are more components
so it's not magic?
auscompgeek
nope
just a special file telling Firefox where everything is :)
smw_
auscompgeek: so how can I track what chrome url a button uses?
auscompgeek
smw_: you could look at what is overlayed.
smw_
auscompgeek: I do not know what you mean by that. Is there a file to look at?
auscompgeek
chrome.manifest, yet again :)
smw_
in the extension dir?
auscompgeek
yeah.
smw_
overlay chrome://browser/content/browser.xul chrome://uniprint/content/uniprint.xul
that url shows up as an empty page :-\
auscompgeek
ok, chrome://uniprint/content/uniprint.xul is overlayed onto chrome://browser/content/browser.xul, the main browser.
smw_
that makes sense
auscompgeek
smw_: you can always press Ctrl+U ;)
smw_
It is a submenu with "print all tabs"
wow
(Action) is a n00b
auscompgeek
don't take it too hard, I like helping others ;)
smw_
:-)
I am learning a lot more about FF
I went to the page
ok
I see oncommand="uniprint.printAll();"
I really want to run that without having to press the button graphically
ah, that is in chrome://uniprint/content/uniprint.js
how can I run a function from there
something like chrome://uniprint/content/uniprint.js/uniprint.printThis()
auscompgeek
you could execute it from the console, but I don't think that will work...
smw_
hm...
auscompgeek
You could use Firebug...
smw_
for what?
kbrosnan
firebug is not for debugging chrome
auscompgeek
Er, never mind then.
kbrosnan
use dominspector or chromebug /w firebug
smw_
maybe combine this with imacros?
auscompgeek
Hm, I don't know, maybe create a keyboard shortcut to execute that piece of code?
smw_
auscompgeek: this needs to be automated completely
no human interaction
auscompgeek
the only other alternative is to create an extension... :/
smw_
lol
that seems like my best option
auscompgeek
You'll need to learn JavaScript and XUL ;)
smw_
...
I have not given up on sloppy hacking

smw_
auscompgeek: my current question is, "is there a way to run a javascript function from the url bar"
kbrosnan
javascript:alert('foo')
smw_
javascript:alert("hello") works. But I need to load it from another file
auscompgeek
Hm, you could do javascript:uniprint.printThis()
See if that works.
smw_
but the file needs to be loaded
auscompgeek: nope. Does not work
I am looking for a javascript import cmd
auscompgeek
:S
smw_
auscompgeek: I give up for now
I will try tomorrow
auscompgeek
ok then...
smw_
auscompgeek: I was trying to find a way to run that function
I just can't figure it out
fashizzlepop
Hey guys, I am having some trouble with my FF on Arch Linux after this latest update. It's been acting weird.
When I click on a tab, occasionally the tab will just be removed.
Also, when I click in any text area it will occasionally paste what I have saved in my clipboard or some other text like a link I recently used. Any ideas for what's wrong?
xangua
are you clicking with the midle button¿ :S
fashizzlepop
Nope, just regular clicking as if I was switching tabs. :(
xangua
well normally you close tabs or paste text with middle button; try with another mouse
fashizzlepop
I'm on a laptop, and it never acts weird.
xangua
just in fx¿¿ weird
fashizzlepop
Yes. Just FF.
Including this current Chatzilla session. It's also doing the same paste thing.
auscompgeek
The official abbreviation for Firefox is Fx, just so you know.
fashizzlepop
Thank you for telling, I usually see "FF" :)
auscompgeek
;)
naquad
where can i find good up to date tutorial on writing ff extensions?
auscompgeek

thanks

hi
when I zoom a page why pictures don't get antialiased in Linux?
rhisa
Hey does firefox have any addon that automatically organizes your folders based on the words? For example "kernel" most likely goes into the linux folder. Is there such an addon?
AzizLight
Hi everybody
How can I merge all windows into one on OS X please? Control-Shift-M/Option-Shift-M does't work....

Does any one have a clue how to stop the ubuntu alert sound when you close firefox?

I think you meant

hi. is it possible to stop browser from executing whatever it is executing? i have a site that repeatedly gets firefox to use 50% cpu (whole core)and become unresponsive while loading some element(probably a badly configured 3rd party counter). i can see memory grow about 1 mb/sec as well
kbrosnan
you'll need to kill firefox, maybe twice to bring up the restore windows and tabs dialog
rhisa
God morning.
Good
I don't think that works kbrosnan... it's.. not intuitive. I have thousands of bookmarks. I still have to go thru each one of them individually no?
e-cat
kbrosnan, that i did... but any non-lethal methods?
itsmeagain
is anyone having trouble accessing searten google sites i cant get into gmeil atm i get this errir This Connection is Untrusted
never seen this before ever till today
rhisa
(Action) cries.
I hate bookmarks now.
itsmeagain
rhisa: get xmarks its teh best
is this a google thing
rhisa
itsmeagain, what do you mean? I have say, 1000 bookmarks and all on various different topics and predefined folders. Wil I be able to say "everything in "uncategorized must be categorized" then it automatically assign based on most likely topic?
Like "xxx" goes into" porn folder or "kernel dev" goes into linux folder.
lol
kbrosnan
no
rhisa
:(
kbrosnan
you would need to create sub folder searches for tags
rhisa
THat's what I need. something to auto sort.
I didn't tag any of these bookmarks. Too many to.
kbrosnan
it is the perfect use case for tags
rhisa
What do you mean perfect use case?
kbrosnan
usage pattern? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Use_case (wordy not sure if it helps any)
rhisa
;_; Nope I don't tink that does.
I wish there was a dictionary based bookmark tool.
"Ah ha! This is xxx, goes into the porn folder." says the computer.
lol >.>
kbrosnan
how does it know it is xxx, do you modify the bookmark name?
the bookmark title is not allways helpful
rhisa
I never modify the bookmark names.
