AldoBR
how to hook firefox downloads
?
i need to hook downloads using an external application
kbrosnan
hook?
AldoBR
yeah
1. user press a link to a file he wants to download
2. instead of downloading, firefox passes the link to an external application
thats basically what i need
kbrosnan
several extensions provide that
AldoBR
i have specific needs
no other download managers can do what i want
i have a server with a cheap ADSL link connected
im writing an application that transfers the link to that server so it downloads the file instead of the browser
kbrosnan
then you are in the realm of writing your own extension
AldoBR
later it transfer the file from that server hd to the local hd
kind of remote download manager
i dont want to write a firefox extension
cause this would make me have to write one for each possible browser
kbrosnan
then you can't do what you want in Firefox
AldoBR
firefox used to allow this...
look at getright

kbrosnan
which is an extension
AldoBR
the same program works with various browsers
no
getright is standalone app
kbrosnan
it has extension components for each browser
AldoBR
so i need to write a damm COM component ?
kbrosnan it maybe so now
but it wasnt how getright worked for years
in the past it was a simple exe
getright.exe wich was automatically called by the browser
kbrosnan
it must either have an extension or possibly a plugin component
AldoBR
i dont know how to express the idea
but theres nothing that makes an extension intrisically needed
or the devs changed firefox completely over time...
back in the 16 bit days (win 3.11) you could not think about extensions, COM, etc... :P
...
its there any simple extension that hooks the download and passes the URL to an external application ?
kbrosnan
launchy mabye
AldoBR
thank you
solved my problem regarding firefox, now i need to find similar things for IE and Chrome
Lazure
i'm curious about something.. why is it that in windows, you go to tools > options in firefox. but in linux, it's in edit > preferences?
is that confusion really necessary?
as a dual boot user, that really screws me up a lot
auscompgeek
Lazure: it's OS consistency.
Lazure: on Mac, it's Firefox > Preferences :D
Lazure
wish i could change it. i'm used to tools > options , period =p
auscompgeek
You could...
Or at least add it, in case someone else was using your computer.
plutonian
when using smart keywords is there a way to get the + character to be interpreted literally?
Gryllida
smart keywords what are these
plutonian
you right click a search box and add a keyword for the search
Gryllida
to get the + character to be interpreted literally - what it should do, I don't completely understand
auscompgeek
Gryllida: + should be passed to the search engine
plutonian
when I type a + into the search box normally, it gets translated to %2B in the url
Gryllida
oh
(Action) is testing it
auscompgeek
Yeah, is what should happen.

plutonian
but when I use the keyword, it doesn't
auscompgeek
strange things happen
plutonian
I tried using %2B in the keyword, and it makes it %252B
Gryllida
does the search result open correctly
for me it does
plutonian
but it doesn't have the + in it
Gryllida
only the url does not have +
the page has it
plutonian
try searching for C++ with the keyword
not with the normal search box
obviously that works as expected
auscompgeek
Gryllida: using the keyword search
(Action) tests
Gryllida
auscompgeek: 'g C++' in url bar
works
plutonian ^
auscompgeek
I got http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=C%2B%2B
plutonian
it ends up searching for c for me
Gryllida
odd
try safe mode
auscompgeek
I use an experimental version of Firefox however...
Gryllida
plutonian: Safe Mode (in supported Mozilla applications) is a good way to see if an add-on, theme or something else is causing a problem. Please see: http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
auscompgeek: where can I get CZ 1.0 ?
auscompgeek
Gryllida: lol
plutonian
when I use the down arrow to complete instead of just hitting enter it works
auscompgeek
That was a joke quit message XD
plutonian
but when I type in "gg c++" and hit enter, I get http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=c++&aq=f&oq=
although interestingly enough, googling C%2B%2B gets a lot of C++ resources
Gryllida
plutonian: the http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=c++&aq=f&oq= is odd
try it in safe mode
plutonian
first let me try upgrading my firefox
Gryllida
ok
plutonian
I still get the same thing in safe mode with my current version
are you sure you didn't click the thing that came up in the smart bar and not just type in "g c++" and hit enter?
Gryllida
I did it in URL bar, not in search box
auscompgeek
(Action) <3 awesomebar
plutonian
hmm weird
what version are you using?
I'm on 3.6.3
auscompgeek
Gryllida: poke
Gryllida
auscompgeek: hm? pong
I'm using 3.6.3
windows xp
auscompgeek
Gryllida: I didn't ping you :P
Gryllida
auscompgeek: it's ok but I don't know how to un-poke myself
auscompgeek
:P
Kano
hi, when i download a lorentz build, then i see lorentz in the useragent
but when i use the update feature then it is a Namoroka build
why?
zimba12
hi
can I "parametrize" a bookmark in firefox?
found it
sorry
Gryllida
hello
Kano, reading your question
Kano
Gryllida: anything unclear?
Gryllida
Kano: umm, I'm multitasking, sorry, I'm just was off for a moment
Kano
just compare http://showip.com/ before and after an update using the help menu
Gryllida
Kano: I'm using 3.6.3, so can't test it out
Kano
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-firefox-lorentz/
or
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-firefox-lorentz-l10n/
behave that way
Gryllida
Kano: more information - where exactly does the message about Namoroka appear?
auscompgeek
Gryllida: in the check for updates window
Kano
when you download it you get lorentz as useragent, simple check use the http://showip.com/ site
when you use the integrated update feature you have switched to Namoroka
thats not normal
Gryllida
auscompgeek: I have no idea, I just see that I have Namoroka and that I can't check for updates like this - because I'm on latest version - the chckforupdates window just says 'no updates' but does not say anything about the version
Kano
Gryllida: just use firefox from the url i showed you
Gryllida
Kano: my internet connection can't let me download a whole new browser, it is VERY slow
Kano
mine is fast ;)
Gryllida
Kano: share some of it with me, hm? sad that it's not possible for a minute
Kano: you have to wait for another user to respond about your question - if some user has that newer version
Kano
well maybe somebody fixes it later...
bye
deltaray
I'm interested in developing an extension for firefox. Are there hooks available for altering the IP address that the browser connects to?
Gryllida
hmm
what is your IRC client?
deltaray
me?
Gryllida
yes
deltaray
why?
Gryllida
irc://irc.mozilla.org/extdev
can you connect to this?
deltaray
ok, so I should ask there.
ok
TannerF
Gryllida: /ctcp version
decoder: Sorry bout that ctcp. i was ttrying to do it on someone else
Gryllida
TannerF: ?
Samus_Aran
how do I remove the "All downloads have completed" pop-up from appearing ?
it provides no information to me (none of my downloads take more than five seconds), it pops up overtop of my window manager controls preventing me from using my desktop, and doesn't go away for a very long time unless I click the [x] on it
Gryllida
hm
1) go to about:config
2) set browser.download.manager.showWhenStarting to false
err
sorry
I misread
you mean the popup, now the window
2) set browser.download.manager.showAlertOnComplete to false
this one ^
Samus_Aran ^
Samus_Aran
Gryllida: thank you
Gryllida
ok :)
hi
Digicrime
hi
Samus_Aran
hi, bye
zubin71_
hi, could someone suggest a firefox plugin which has download-queuing functionality?
Gryllida
hm
Do you mean several downloads at the same time?
This functionality is available in Firefox 3.x by default.
Please write the functionality you're missing for me to make some suggestion.
zubin71
Gryllida: this is the functionality i had in mind. as one download goes on, assume that another 5 ones are queued. the 5 are paused. however, as the current download ends, the first among these 5 to enter the queue resumes download. Similarly with the other 4
Gryllida: hope i`ve been clear...
Gryllida
ok
I see
but Firefox 3.x has this
zubin71
Oh!
Gryllida
several downloads can go at the sametime
zubin71
but they cant be queued...
rite?
Gryllida
why not
they can
queued, or at the same time
both options
zubin71
Sorry, i dint know... could you tell me where i could set the options...?
Gryllida
by default, this goes on like this:
you download one file, it starts downloading,
and if you hit download for another file then it starts downloading too,
both at the same time,
zubin71
yes...
Gryllida
and you *can* queue them by pausing some
but naturally, they do download severaal at the sme time
same
this is default
queue is possible only if you hit the paause button for some
zubin71
So, basically if i have 4 paused downloads and one which is going on, another one resumes "automatically" after the current one is over?
Thankx, i dint know the feature existed...
Gryllida: are you a firefox dev?
Gryllida
true
not very
firefox addons dev
zubin71
Gryllida: cool...!
