mezod
hi, is there a way i can save my favourite adress bar to use it in a firefox on another pc?
techjohnny
Is there a Windows registry setting that will allow you to buffer Flash content in Firefox? I have a slow connection at home and would like to specify a 2-minute before before playing Flash content.
kbrosnan
check with adobe, they would best know any settings for their flash player
acron17
hi there! i'm using firefox (3.5.8) under ubuntu linux. i've got the problem that some websites are not displayed. firefox keeps saying "Waiting for WEBSITE..."
these websites are online and accessible with other programs (wget)
any ideas what could be the reason for this? or how i can debug the problem?
kbrosnan
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+cannot+load+websites+but+other+programs+can
make sure you don't have a proxy set up. try disabling ipv6. try disabling prefetching
acron17
kbrosnan, thanks. i'm on it
kbrosnan, i disabled the proxy setting. no change... where can i disable ipv6 and prefetching?
kbrosnan
acron17: about:config
type that in the address bar
acron17
ok. disabled both, still no luck.
i also tried the suggestion under "Firefox cannot load certain websites" from your link... without success
kbrosnan
running iptables? or other software firewall?

acron17
kbrosnan, yeah quite normal: router+firewall. but it's open for connections for outgoing packages
kbrosnan, i just tried the safe-mode, still no luck. could you do me small favor and try http://jquery.com or http://mootools.net ?
kbrosnan
both are fine
acron17
kbrosnan, thx
firefox won't write a logfile or print some informations on the console, right??
kbrosnan
generally distros have a debug package that you can install
acron17
kbrosnan, it's working as another user...
kbrosnan
acron17: tryed a new firefox profile in your first user account?
acron17
kbrosnan, it's working with a new profile as well...
kbrosnan, but that isn't helping me much... as i want to keep my profile if possible
and backing up my profile is done with copying the whole profile-folder... which i doubt would solve my problem
kbrosnan
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Recovering%20important%20data%20from%20an%20old%20profile
acron17
kbrosnan, thanks for the link. i now just copied the most of my old profile to the new and it seems to work, thanks
kbrosnan, i've to get some sleep now. it's already late around here... thank you very much for your support!

Hi, I'd like to make firefox open all tabs after the last opened tab, and not near the on I'm currently using. Would someone please help me?
Speeder
Hello here! Can someone help me figure why firefox is SOOOO slow?
OrSpeeder
I mean: Everything else is blazing fast (I have a Athlon X2 6000+) including other browsers, but firefox runs slow to a crawl, sometimes it take MINUTES to switch between tabs, or to write a phrase in any text box (URL field, search, or any form within a page...)
If I watch the processes, firefox is always using 100% when it decides to be slow
brah-
does it do it in safe mode?
NishaKitty
hi hi everyone does anyone happen to know of an extension to change/remove auto complete history in firefox?
kbrosnan
you can just use delete key to remove entries you don't want
Syndey
hello, how do I REMOVE FLASH from firefox, ubuntu.
NishaKitty
kbrosnan, neat thank you
kbrosnan
Syndey: flash can be disabled via tools > options > addons > plugins
Syndey: if you truly want to uninstall it use your distro's package manager (assuming you used a package manger to install flash in the first place)
Syndey
OK I have NEVER had the package manager work to install ANYTHING.
And I really want to ininstall it in chrome. I'll do it in firefox now.
actaully, I think it works in ff
but my igoogle page does not. FF announces that it needs javascript but when I haul out a website to check it says that Javascript is installed. And yet, none of the corner gadgets show in any of the subwindows on the igoogle page.

kbrosnan
javascript is a core feature of the browser, either you've disabled it edit > prefs > content > javascript
or you have an extension that is breaking the site. noscript and adblock would be my first guesses
Syndey
OK I'll kill all extensions. cool
oops I am in UBUNTU so I dont have tools options addons to go to. I do have edit preferences then I see content types but no addaware or flash or javascript or noscript there.
kbrosnan
tools > add-ons is universal in Firefox
brah-
firefox runs better on linux
yet only 3% of desktop users use linux
seem pretty dumb, they should go out of their way to optimize for windows
that is ofcourse who helps mozilla make over 100 million a year, via firefox
kbrosnan
huh? linux firefox is a lot less optmised for linux
than the windows version
brah-
i've seen speed tests, it runs better, probably because most if not all firefox devs are linux users
so they're use to crappy stuff like malloc, and select
which isn't good on windows
Syndey
found out I do have noscript because it did something or other.
kbrosnan
it stops all javascript from running unless you manually approve it
dolske
funny, usually people complain that we spend more time optimizing for Windows than Linux.
kbrosnan
heh
brah-
firefox needs better proxy support, it also has some bug with socks
that has been submited prior, but not addressed yet
dolske
patches welcome!
there are some addons to do fancier things with proxies...
brah-
the problem with patches is they can sit there for months and no one benefits
dolske well the built in socks proxy support is bugged, don't know how off top of my head, freezes somewhere or somthin
but this was submited months ago, and no fix
dolske
we're much better about not having patches be ignored, but they can take a while to work through if reviewers are busy or unaware that they're there.
it's a resource-limited project, so if things go unfixed it's usually because there are more important things being worked on.
kbrosnan
https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Developer_Guide/How_to_Submit_a_Patch covers the process fairly well.
really a patch needs to have an active reviewer set, if there is not one of those then it will progress much slower through the process
dolske
ah, yes, forgot about that.
kbrosnan
if you have a link I'm sure somone in this channel can at least get it organized. assuming a vaid patch is attached
brah-
see that's the problem
mozilla makes easily, over 100 MILLION a year off firefox, they can afford to throw real money it, clearly they just don't care
money at it rather
dolske
times thousands and thousands of little bugs, and suddenly we're talking billions a month.
or about 1/10th of what Google and Apple are spending. :)
kbrosnan
there are a finite number of developers qualified and up to speed on the mozilla codebase
throwing money at the problem just gets you into the mmm teritory
West
(Action) pokes benf
brah-
they can't hire 15-20 more developers, and get them up to speed?
dolske
why shouldn't we hire 15-20 more developers to work on accelerated Windows graphics instead?
Or maybe more HTML5 features
brah-
I tell you one thing, if I was mozilla, and firefox was my money cow, I wouldn't neglect it like they are
dolske
or maybe more CSS support
or maybe... oops, we're already into the $billions again.
brah-
how is that the billions? mozilla already doesn't pay 90% of the contributors a dime
they can afford 50/60k a year per deve
dolske
things get prioritized, and it's the stuff that gets a lower priority makes those people grumpy.
brah-
dolske I understand that, but what is more important to mozilla than firefox? in terms of projects
kbrosnan
An open an vibrent web
dolske
I don't think socks proxy code has been actively worked on in many years, and yet we've had strong user growth, so it's hard for me to argue against that prioritization.
brah-
it's not like they have 100 projects to fund, they just have a few
dolske
kbrosnan: and how's that going these days? oright, better than ever.
(Action) takes his grumpyhat off.
brah-
the only big advantage firefox has had over chrome is plugins, that's just about out the window, no offense but the webkit backend is infamously more lightweight and cleaner than mozilla's, and Google names alone is having chrome grab incredible amount of market share
if mozilla cares at all they'll start throwing money at firefox, and taking it to new heights
dolske
you make it sound like Mozilla isn't spending any money at all.
brah-
from the developers i've spoken to, it appears they aren't
dolske
lol... ok.
brah-
they don't advertise firefox like chrome does on hulu, or anywhere?
they only pay handful of developers
google pays for contributions with summer of code etc...
dolske
if Mozilla spent money on that, then you'd be yelling that we're wasting money on ads instead of proxy support.
"just spend $X more" is a great argument to make when you don't have to sum up the $Xs.
brah-
no I wouldn't, but the reality is mozilla isn't spendin a dime I can see on firefox, besides a few developers
kbrosnan
gsoc is an option for any vibrant oss project, mozilla is a participant
brah-
if you're fine with that, great, continue to pad their pockets and develop their software for them
kbrosnan
and 200+ employees is a far cry from 10s
dolske
pad whose pockets?
brah-
you're saying they have 200 employees working on firefox?
dolske
brah-: you seem fairly uninformed for someone making arguments about how to run things.
brah-
are you saying they have 200 employees working on firefox?
kbrosnan
there abouts, at various levels of 'working'.
brah-
do you work for mozilla?
kbrosnan
no
dolske
I'm not sure what the latest numbers are, that sounds about right for the number of full-time Mozilla employees
brah-
that goes strongly against what i've read, and heard speaking to those who do work for mozilla
but ok
dolske
what you've read where?
kbrosnan
dolske is a moz employee, fairly well respected in the community as well
admitly he does not work in hr but given that he works in the mt. view office he should have a general idea
brah-
then he would know, i'm not gonna argue with that, I don't work there
dolske
submit some more patches and we can talk about it! ;)

Is there a way to specify a Mime-type for a local (filesystem) file?
In particular I want a *.html.gz file to be decompressed and displayed as Html instead of Zip coming up...
Cork
i think there is an extension to overide mime; but i'm not sure it works for local files
chris29
Well, when a webserver sends gz-compressed content I get the html displayed. So I was hoping to do the same for local files

Hi, this page consumes 100% CPU and crashes Firefox 2.6.2 (all plugins disabled) for me on Arch Linux: http://www.2u.ee/eng/kalkulators_citizen_sld_311bk.html?3012.0.294
Does anyone else have the same problem?
purplegreysilver
Hey, --ubuntu 9.10 here-- Reporting: The problem with Ubuntu freezing seems to be Chrome. I was unable to determine how to disable flash, so I made FF my default browser, removed all addons (except the Ubuntu one) restarted FF and surfed, watched a youtube, watched 3 Jon stewart shows, did everything but have a million tabs (which is so much easier in chrome because chrome is faster and more pliable and keeps such a good history and is more convenient)
But I digress. My Ubuntu quit crashing. And that's the rest of the story.
Thanks intgr for making me think of this, and with chrome I was always at 100% ram, pretty much.
I'll try your page.
intgr
:)
purplegreysilver
But I cant duplicate your situation I have FF 3.5.8 for Ubuntu with the ubuntu plugin.
And it crashes my firefox.
I would presume its the page.
Rx: dont go there.
Are you happy now intgr?
intgr
purplegreysilver: Yeah, I feel immense satisfaction that I managed to crash your browser. Thank you! :)
purplegreysilver
NP man.
oh yeah and I have it set to start up on last page now it wont work rotfl
good, this time it went to "shall I start a new session, sir?"
Ted, makes my ram use 100%
sybariten
OK so i hanged my Firefox... and i had one window with zillions of tabs, and one window with one tab.
It was the latter that fu*ked up but both windows went down in the shootout
the question is, when restarting, how do i avoid that FF tries to restore the window wit one tab only?
i have found places.sqlite, its very recent. I also have sessionstore.bak but maybe thats something else
Peng
places.sqlite is your bookmarks and history. sessionstore.js is your session. sessionstore.bak is a backup of the last session that crashed you.
sybariten
ah, so sessionstore.js is the interesting file for me?
Peng
Yuh-huh.
sybariten
say what
Peng
Sorry. I meant yes.
sybariten
okay
Peng
(Action) strikes "yuh-huh" off his list.
sybariten
i copied the whole profiles dir to another place and am restarting FF
i wonder how it makes these decisions though
oh, interesting...
it opened _both_ windows
purplegreysilver
I suppose there is some deep inner reason why the bookmarks file cant be clearly marked so even a peasant can understand without a connection to The Inner Circle. /sarcasm
Peng
Maybe they didn't like "bookmarks_and_history_and_maybe_some_other_crap.sqlite".
purplegreysilver
I sense a tone of anger. It used to be called bookmarks
and history is elsewhere
But I've prolly got a bit more history than you do.
And a ton of experience getting CS student to use meaningful names (or you dont get credit the next time)
lol
It doesnt matter what _you like_, the secrets lie in the twin arms of usability and maintenance and the key is transparency.

I'm having trouble with printing from firefox 3.5.6
the font of the body text is horrid looking (anti-aliased)
the font used for the banner text is fine, but the body text is not
is there a way to alter the font(s) used for generating the print file?
Lefantomedurezo
hello I have a question
so /quit and /quat are on a boat, /quat fall in the water: who stay?
sybariten
/quit ?
zjblabs
what are these "jetpack" extensions?
sybariten
i have roughly 80-100 tabs open. Is there some specific interface that allows searching among them easily=
?
i'd prefer some incremental search, emacs stylee
laeg
when using ff 3.5.8 linux i686 facebook chat from facebook.com my entire desktop often freezes for a few seconds and the cpu goes to 100% usage
have any of you encountered this?
sybariten
laeg: i've heard of other people having crashes with FB
specifically FB...
laeg
sybariten: yes, specifically fb
but only when signed into chat
