Are there any issues with Flash 10.0.0.45.2 on Firefox 3.6? A coworker of mine is having all sorts of weird problems.
km

TannerF

Peng

Wait, FTP? EW. Why?
_Joda_
km, there are multiple "ssl-ftp" thingys
km
what you meant?
_Joda_
there is sftp, scp, implicit ssl, auth ssl
km
we what apache ftp with ssl (mod_ftp). firefire support ftps?
with having to use sftp, scp or filezilla clients.
without
is fireftp plugin the only option?

_Joda_
or an external client
use https
consider webdav

_Joda_
hmm, is it possible to add other codecs to firefox video ?
dolske
_Joda_: to the browser's HTML5 <video> support? no.
_Joda_
why not ?
dolske
maybe in the future, but it's not right now.
Samus_Aran
since the update to Firefox 3.6, I no longer have any visible processes for the Adobe Flash plugin. being that I am constantly needing to kill Flash when it misbehaves, how can I do this on 3.6 ?
GNU+Linux OS
before I would do "killall npviewer.bin"
now looking at a process tree, I see only run-mozilla.sh which calls firefox-bin which has around 50 to 80 threads, all called firefox-bin
kbrosnan
Samus_Aran: that is expected. in the comming months 3.6 should support killable plugins but it does not currently
Samus_Aran
kbrosnan: why is it expected ? plugins have used clearly named processes since the existence of web browsers
kbrosnan: are you saying Firefox no longer allows people to operate their browser ?
what do you do when Flash freezes up your browser ?
just sit on your hands and wait 30 to 60 seconds ?
kbrosnan
this is not a change, it is how it has behaved since pre Firefox. it is possible you were using something like nspluginwrapper which allowed for some killing of plugins
Samus_Aran
how do I enable nspluginwrapper ?
kbrosnan
i've never used it
Samus_Aran
I installed both Firefox 3.5.x and 3.6.0 from the official web site, so I'm not sure why they would operate differently
I think I am using a global plugin directory
but I've never seen any web browser ever that doesn't have plugin processes visible
kbrosnan: so how do you personally deal with Flash or another plugin which freezes up your browser ?

Ubuntu 9.10 firefox says I need javascript. Preferences tells me it is there. In igoogle I dont get the target ad at all. What's up with that?
Yesterday it was quiet in here too.
Samus_Aran
penguinv: explain your issue a bit more clearly, please
penguinv: http://www.w3schools.com/JS/tryit.asp?filename=tryjs_alert
penguinv: click the button, does it pop up a message ?
if so, your Javascript is working fine
are you sure something is asking for Javascript, and not Java ?
penguinv: also, what version of Firefox and what URL is having the problem ?
penguinv
thanks for answering FF 3.5.8 -- Yes, Javascript (you must have ~ enabled to use this page - It is not a button; I tried.), http://www.google.com/ --- and I'll look at the w3schools page.
Samus_Aran
I meant the button on the w3schools page
what is the problem with www.google.com ?
penguinv
what do you want me to do with that webpage that shows the html. OH I clicked it and it did nothing. wait...
Samus_Aran
there's a button that says "Show alert box"
clicking it should pop up a small dialog box
if it doesn't, you don't have a working Javascript
penguinv
OK I did it in firefox. I saw nothing. Then I realized that the right-hand button flashed a bit. so I clicked that, and baby, it told me that it was an alert box.
So now I am paying attention (alert).
Samus_Aran
okay, so your JS is fine
penguinv
it doesnt work in chrome though.
Samus_Aran
what is the exact issue you see on www.google.com ?
penguinv
In igoogle I dont get the target ad at all. I get a blank. (that's a "gadget" ie optional feature on the "my google" mage)
And there is a line on top as I said telling me I need Javascript to use the page (so the page code cant see something it needs.)
Samus_Aran
I don't know what a target ad is. I'm on the iGoogle page, how do I add it ?
penguinv
umm let me look
Samus_Aran
Target(R) Weekly Ad
Added

oops
penguinv
Ah more issues. There are no gadgets (Amiga term) in the corner of any of my gadgets. the topbar on each is blank.
Samus_Aran
that was supposed to be one line
do you mean that thingy ?
penguinv
yes that's the one -- but now I see it's a bigger issue.
hoo boy most of them are "Loading' no content.
it's a massive cluster-bomb
Samus_Aran
I added the target ad, hamsters and turtles
tamtam
yo
Samus_Aran
they're all running fine for me
I would suggest doing a forced reload (shift+reload, I think it is) or else restart Firefox
you might have a cached JS file that is messing things up
tamtam
is there a way to put a password on the option "show passwords" on the password list on firefox options ?
Samus_Aran
tamtam: greetings
tamtam: you want to use the Master Password feature
tamtam: this encrypts your passwords using the Master Password, and you must enter it before using any of the saved passwords
tamtam
oh okay Samus_Aran
i thought it was a password used for all the website
Samus_Aran
otherwise, all passwords are unencrypted
penguinv
that's a good feature. . master password. windows allows the limited user still to do way too much.
oh the turtles are cool.
Samus_Aran
without using the Master Password, anyone with access to the system can easily retrieve all the passwords you've entered into a web site
tamtam
thanks Samus_Aran :)
works fine
Samus_Aran
which isn't always a good idea. :)
tamtam
bye ^^
Samus_Aran
just don't forget it
tamtam
I won't :>
Samus_Aran
your master password, I mean
penguinv
IN Chrome the target ad fails but I get a small square of it. The corner control gadgets are fine in Chrome.
tamtam
Just out of curiosity
If I ever do forget it
Samus_Aran
then you'll need to erase all your passwords
penguinv
I've just put it on my list to put a Master Password on a system I maintain for a group.
tamtam
Okay
Samus_Aran
and enter a new Master Password
penguinv
as I understand it I must erase all my passwords anyway (since I have used them all) before I put in a master password.
and then reenter them as needed.
Samus_Aran
I don't think entering a Master Password for the first time will erase the site passwords
they aren't encrypted before you enter the master password, so it should be able to just encrypt them at that time
penguinv
You said - this encrypts your passwords using the Master Password, and you must enter it before using any of the saved passwords
I still have the total fail on all th eigoogle gadgets and we established that javascript is working even though the igoogle page cries out that it is needed for that page. ANy clues?
Samus_Aran
penguinv: the problem is almost definitely on their end
that, or it's a caching problem as I suggested
did you try doing the force-reload ?
and/or restart Firefox
Bacta
Dear Mozilla, please don't kill HTML5 video
PS. Theora sucks
auscompgeek
Since when were we killing <video>?
Bacta
By not supporting H.264
Another way of putting it might be: Dear Mozilla, please don't kill Firefox
Which is essentially what they will be doing
AlienDK
pffft
bullsh*t
I'd rather use Theora than h.264
The web should be free and open :)
Bacta
Sure, but the majority of people don't give a sh*t
:P
AlienDK
Yeah well thats not my fault
Bacta
My mother doesn't care but she would switch to IE or Chrome if all of a sudden one of her favourite sites switched to <video>
AlienDK
well
Don't you think the web should be open to everyone?
Bacta
Firefox has like a, 25% market share roughly?
AlienDK
I don't know
Bacta
Well it's impressive
Really impressive, but if they go down this track they'll lose it
AlienDK
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=7646da3f990207c3&hl=en
:)
They CAN'T use h264
Bacta
If I were Google I would use H.264
Exclusively
AlienDK
Yeah well you're not
Bacta
And put a bloody big "Download Chrome" button in place of video content for those who cannot view it
AlienDK
Lol
Chrome sucks, unless you don't care about privacy of course
Bacta
The man on the street loves his Youtube ;)
He doesn't care
AlienDK
H.264 is proprietary
Bacta
He just wants it to work
AlienDK
proprietary D:
auscompgeek
We don't want to pay billions of dollars just to support H.264.
Ok, that's an over-exaggeration, but you get the idea.
Bacta
Billions is an exaggeration
AlienDK
Yeah
Bacta
And it's not like Mozilla hasn't used closed source formats before
Remember gifs?
AlienDK
Money money money
:)
auscompgeek
GIF isn't proprietary, is it?
AlienDK
It is

Bacta

Night all

WormFood
is there a plugin/module or some way for FF that will show me the IP address it is looking up? I route "problem addresses" over my VPN (I'm in China), and sometimes FF gets an address for youtube, that I don't have in my routing table, and I can't figure out what address it is getting (don't suggest a dns lookup, I've done that, and it never gives me the address in question, no matter how many times I try)
AlienDK
aww
That sucks dude :(
China :(
WormFood
yeah
no, China is great
AlienDK
Nah
auscompgeek
You can always use Flagfox.
WormFood
Flagfox?
have a url handy?
AlienDK
...
auscompgeek
AlienDK
lazy
WormFood
heh
auscompgeek
Wow, simple, wasn't it?
AlienDK
FREE TIBET!
WormFood
I asked if he had it handy....if not, i'd look it up :P thanks auscompgeek
auscompgeek
np ;)
WormFood
no AlienDK, don't say that, or they'll kill my IRC connection
