satdav
gavin, ping
Tarinaky
I have a problem that all mouse-over text and pop up menus fail to display. In the former case I can see the shadow of the box but not the contents.
satdav
what version of firefox you using
TannerF
satdav: why are you pinging him?
satdav
it is ok
RuediiX
tarinaky, what is your Operating system, it sounds more like a OS problem to me.
Tarinaky
Arch Linux.
As far as I can determine the problem is limited to Firefox.
RuediiX
Do you have Compiz or another compositing manager running?
Tarinaky
Yes.

satdav
it was just to let him to know there is some new cloaks waiting for approvel and he is the admin for them
RuediiX
Try it without Compiz to see if that's the problem
Tarinaky
I don't have another Window Manager.
How can I get the two to play nice?
RuediiX
Try installing the "advanced compiz config" control panel, and turn on the "firefox menu fix" under "workarounds"
Tarinaky
Cheers.
RuediiX
does that mean it worked?
Tarinaky
That's fixed the menus but not the mouse over text.
RuediiX
Well, firefox behaves differently on some mouseover text. The image substitute text doesn't normally display on mouseover. It's technically against W3.org
Tarinaky
Oh wait... it's stopped working again.
It's not alt test.
*text.
And it's displaying the shadow of the box.
satdav
has it chashed in the last couple of days
RuediiX
Hmm. I'm baffled. Are you sure you don't have metacity or something installed. If you are using GNOME it should install metacity.
satdav
try a clean install of firefox
Tarinaky
satdav: Tried it.
satdav
OK
Tarinaky
I'm not using GNOME or KDE.
satdav
http://s4c.in/11
can you try that
RuediiX
Ah, hmm, what desktop environment are you using?
tapas
hi, how much work would it be to create an extension that automatically fires up an application for a certain file type?
satdav
it depends
tapas
so people don't have to mess with mime types, etc, manually...
on what? :D

satdav
can i suggest you to go on irc.mozilla.org
and go on #addons when you connect
tapas
ok. thanks :D
Tarinaky
RuediiX: None. I'm not using an off the shelf DE..
Just a Window Manager launched with a shell script.
satdav
OK what linux version are you using
Tarinaky
Arch Linux. Which is rolling release.
satdav: I opened that link... I tried about:crashes and it just told me the url was invalid.
satdav
OK
Tarinaky
The firefox workaround button is working on popup menus but not mouse over text.
And by mouse over text I mean tool tips from buttons as well.
The help menu in the toolbar doesn't render either.
s/in/from
RuediiX
Terinaky you could try checking the other settings in that advanced setting manager.
You may have a malfunctioning Compiz plugin, try turning off unnecessary ones.
Tarinaky
Nope. I worked through the list (it's a very short list) turning them each off and trying.
RuediiX
Are you sure you are using the full settings manager, not the simple panel
Tarinaky
The only one I can find is 'ccsm'.
' Compizconfig Settings Manager in Python'
RuediiX
that would be the right one
Well i'm pretty much out of clues
Lars_G
hey all
I'm looking for a very very specific extension, I hope there is one, and you know it, so you can help me.
I need an extension that will take my current web page, spider all links up to a level X of depth, and search text inside all spidered pages.
kind of a broser based htdig or similar
LiENUS
anyone know what happens if a page in a datauri uses localstorage?
the localstorage javascript api
since localstorage is based on domain name and data uris have no domain name...
MTughan
kbrosnan: Late thanks, but it helped. Thanks.
shodan45
why are some FF themes not available for linux? aren't they just images, css, js, etc?
ciupicri
I'm using firefox-3.5.8-1.fc12.x86_64 and the when looking at the graphs from http://nichol.as/benchmark-of-python-web-servers firefox becomes slow. epiphany-2.28.2-1.fc12.x86_64 (which AFAIK uses WebKit) and Google Chrome don't have this problem.
Raccoon-
I just started firefox and it asked if I'd like to upgrade to version 4.02 (win32xp)
I declined, but now I can't find anything about FF4.
Help > Check for Updates reveals no updates.
dolske
uhh
poutine
3.6 you mean?
Raccoon-
4.02
dolske
yeah, there is no Firefox 4.
Raccoon-
i have 3.6
dolske
Are you sure you're not running Netscape 4? ;)
Raccoon-
i swear i'm not lying or trolling
dolske
have a screenshot?
Raccoon-
no
poutine
I am running netscape navigator gold
dolske
Raccoon-: quit and restart, see if it does it again?
Raccoon-
i usually decline until i read about the features and check if my important extensions are compatable
nay
would it check again so quickly?
dolske
hard to say, since I wouldn't have thought that was us!
if it happens again, grab a screenshot?
Raccoon-
absolutely
now i'm reading some old article from 2008 about some features not making it into FF3, but "if Chris Beard, VP Labs, Mozilla has his way, they'll find their way into FF4". and something about tightly integrating FF into the OS?
wtf @ last 6 words
dolske
"OS integration" generally means working and feeling like a native app.
eg, Firefox 2 on OS X looked like crap, Firefox 3 was much much better.
Raccoon-
wouldn't blurring these worlds lead people into danger?
"oh, this data is local, and thus private"
"oh crap, notepad just spilled its guts on twitter!"
"my credit cards!"
dolske
no... not at all what's going on.
Raccoon-
i mean as far as applets running outside of a browser framed window
appearing to be a local only app
its the type of trickery we usually discourage of popup windows. ie, disallow resizing/moving/etc of the window to prevent screen immitation
or am i just off base?
dolske
no, I mean having the browser itself look and feel more like a native app, not web content.
Raccoon-
oic
dolske
eg, Firefox has separate icon sets for XP and Vista, because the two OSs look quite different.
Raccoon-
so old news then
dolske
XP gets a plastic green button, Vista gets a shiny blue button.
etc
yes, old news. :)
Raccoon-
XP gets new buttons every 0.5 version :p
maybe 0.1 versions
dolske
heh
Raccoon-
(Action) is glad CatTheif's Mostly Crystal theme has been working for him since FF2
thanks again.
hevauq
on 64 bit Linux(fedora 12 or 10), whenever i play some video, the area with video goes blank randomly? is that a know issue?
*known
auscompgeek
Flash or HTML5 <video>?
hevauq
flash, the adobe flash, mostly youtube
they work mostly fine with 32 bit OS
auscompgeek
You should ask Adobe that if it happens in other browsers.
or #fedora
hevauq
ok, but i dont use any other browser.
is there compatibility issue with 64 bit linux?
*issues
mattcodes
is there a way to turn down the level of optimisations tracemonkey does? i.e. for javascript debugging
auscompgeek
Use Firebug, that should help you. :P
mattcodes
firebug has issues - especially as tracemonkey gets more aggressive whether - see http://www.mattfreeman.co.uk/
auscompgeek: just realised your response was to hevauq not me
auscompgeek
No, that was to you.
mattcodes
whats the status of websocket support in FF 3.x?
Cork
neure
guys
i seriously need to consider alternatives to firefox
latest version has been leaking hugely memory for me and i need to restart it all the time because of that :/
like every day it has eaten half a gig
auscompgeek
You could use BarTab or TooManyTabs&
neure
well i dont know exactly what is the problem
are those browsers are ff extensions?
auscompgeek
Those are extensions, yes.
Also see http://support.mozilla.com/kb/High+memory+usage
Cork
neure: your using extensions?
auscompgeek
Yeah, extensions can also contribute to memory usage.
neure
right
Cork
most of the leaks that happens in firefox now days come from extensions
auscompgeek
Yeah.
Cork
another big source are flash
neure
well ive already disabled all plugins and addons
auscompgeek
*is
Cork
firefox in it self is farly tidy actually
neure
could be flash yeah
auscompgeek
config.trim_on_minimize if you minimize Firefox a lot?
neure
ff should somehow cap its memory use
Cork
auscompgeek: im' not sure that one works anymore
auscompgeek
Oh, yeah, it hasn't worked lately has it?
9.9
Cork
auscompgeek: i think i war removed in 3.5 or something like that
*was
auscompgeek
:S
Cork
neure: what os it this on btw?
neure
windows
xp sp3 :)
Cork
you could give chrom/chromium a try
auscompgeek
*chrome
neure
ive tried it a bit
Cork
its a memory hogg too though
neure: your running ff 3.6?
auscompgeek
I hop from Chrome to Firefox to Opera and back.
Cork
i can't stand opera, but i use chrome quite a bit
neure
cork, yes
auscompgeek
But mostly Chrome and Firefox.
neure
whats different between chrome and chromium?
Cork
neure: chromium is opensource
auscompgeek
Google Chrome is partly open source.
Cork
apart from that its mostly the same
auscompgeek
with some extra features here and there.
Cork
well chrome grabs goodies from chromium and add some propriatary things
auscompgeek
Yeah.
such as the branding :DD
neure
damn gotta reboot
i love the way you need to reboot your computer when you install windows sdk :D
auscompgeek
lol
Cork
i love how you will have to reboot windows when you update language packs for OFFICE XD
auscompgeek
LOL
Cork
or even better reboot after help file updates to office
(Action) kicks ms somewhere sensetive
auscompgeek
LOL!
omg opening development tools crashed almost all my Chrome tabs!
actually, all of them, with the exception of extension option pages!
Cork
O_o
how did you manage that >_>
auscompgeek
I merely tried to open dev tools&
Now I have to reload all my tabs&
talk about instability&
Cork
never had that happen here
auscompgeek
try the dev version :P
Cork
ah
don't really know why i would want to
auscompgeek
:P
Cork
i mean, i don't know of any interesting news thats even planed to land
auscompgeek
