Peng
tulcod: I usually hold down Escape to exit the alerts while mashing the tab close button . . .
tulcod
Peng: so there's no intellectual method?
Basstard`
BartZ: Ah, so what would that string be? general.useragent. ..system?
BartZ
Basstard`: what is your current UA string?
psusi
I can drag a tab out of the tab bar to expand it into its own window.... is it possible to put it back?
TannerF
yes
psusi
how?
TannerF
just do the opposite :)
rjohnson19
For escaping from JS alerts, give this a try: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13530

psusi
hrm.... not working for me
mzz
psusi: you probably need to have the tab bar always visible for that to work
psusi: I think if you drag the last tab out of a window you close the window
psusi
it just positions the window on top... doesn't drop it in
mzz
psusi: so if you have the tab bar visible even for windows with only one tab it lets you do this by dragging that tab
Basstard`
BartZ: Well, I'm just playing around in the usual Ubuntu LiveCD, so it is, according to whatsmyuseragent.com: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20091020 Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) Firefox 3.5.3
psusi
huh? I'm trying to put the window BACK into a tab
tulcod
rjohnson19: oh great, you need an addon to stop webpages from taking over your pc. well, at least it's possible
Peng
That field is the output of 'uname -sm', FYI.
BartZ
Basstard`: so set the pref to |Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686;en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20091020 Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) Firefox 3.5.3| with all changes you want.
TannerF
or just right click and click reset
Basstard`
BartZ: The overrice you mean?
ride
BartZ
Basstard`: yes.
Basstard`
haha
Peng
Basstard`: Why do you want to change this? You'll screw up everyone's log analyzing.
tulcod
rjohnson19: i must say that addon does its job quite well - thanks :)
Basstard`
Peng: Linux is not the operating system. GNU is.
Peng
Basstard`: Tell that to 'uname -s'.
Well.
psusi
ohh, there we go... yea, had to turn tabs always visible back on, then drag the tab to the tab bar in the other window
Peng
'uname -s' is about the kernel, and for whatever reason Mozilla uses that field.
psusi
rather than drag the window...

Basstard`
Peng: -s is kernel..
yeah
psusi
there isn't a quick keyboard shortcut to toggle that is there? ;)
Basstard`
Peng: Should be using -o
rjohnson19
tulcod: you're welcome
Peng
Basstard`: Perhaps. File a bug. But it's unlikely to change, for backwards compatibility.
Basstard`
Peng: What does the Windows version say? Windows or Windows/NT or NT?
BartZ
Peng: why do you think that replacing "Linux" with "GNU/Linux" is going to "screw up everyone's log analyzing"?
Peng
BartZ: Because it's different.
Basstard`: https://developer.mozilla.org/En/User_Agent_Strings_Reference gives examples.
BartZ
here is 3.6 UA: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6
Peng
BartZ: Why wouldn't changing something screw it up?
BartZ
Peng: not much different.
Peng
BartZ: What does that matter?
psusi
so is there a keyboard shortcut to toggle the option to ALWAYS show the tab bar, even when there is only one tab?
Peng
BartZ: We're talking about computers, not people. Different is different.
BartZ
robust and well written log analyzing software should deal with it without problems, I think.
Peng
Maybe.
It's not necessary, though.
BartZ
end user is free to do whatever he/she wants. :-) I love messing with UA string, don't you? ;)
Trx_
how do i stop firefox from auto updating ?
i unchecked /addons/firefox/ and search engines
yet its still downloading the update
brockp
hello, I am having trouble where firefox 3.6 is not displaying css for a page anymore, the page is anypage from google adsense control panels. You see the text but it isn't formatted correctly, (no formatting) I had seen this problem before and randomly fixed its self, note the site displays fine in safari and opera,
Samus_Aran
is there some easy way to make Firefox fade an HTML page in from black ?
pereba
maybe with css3
jayh
I have a question
If Mozilla can't afford H.264 codecs for FF, and Youtube were to persay not use OGG Vorbis, wouldn't that mean that FF were to be stuck with Flash on sites like youtube that don't support OGG?
Samus_Aran
jayh: that's correct
welcome to the world of software patents
a brave new age.
jayh
Sounds like it
Let's just hope Google isn't evil, eh?
Samus_Aran
jayh: most likely what will happen is someone will release a plugin for Firefox which adds proprietary media formats to the HTML5 embed code, and everyone will juse use that, despite it not being legal in many countries
jayh
Yeah, I've used HTML5 + Chrome on youtube
wasn't that great to be honest
Samus_Aran
it's not like patent restrictions have stopped all the open source media players
jayh
Samus_Aran: sounds like something that would definetely happen haha
Samus_Aran
but if Mozilla doesn't buy a license, you can be sure they'll never distribute Firefox with support for proprietary codecs
jayh
Yeah....
Samus_Aran
jayh: I've only seen a few video embeds with HTML5, I don't use Google products (too privacy invading)
so no YouTube HTML5
jayh
I really hope Firefox doesn't die out before the 4.0 release. Heh
It was hella buggy
it was definetely harder to pick a different spot on the video
There's a word for that...
personally i think this is a subtle backstab at open-source browsers that are made by smaller companies
seeing how Google loves HTML5, and how the H.264 codec is owned by companies like Sony, Apple, and I think, Microsoft
Samus_Aran
jayh: all the big corporations share patents
jayh: the goal is to eliminate competition from small start-ups
jayh: i.e. a monopoly
software patents are patently awful. :)
jayh
:P
Samus_Aran
we are in the age of corporations holding way more power than individuals, and more power than most world governments. expect a revolution or complete enslavement of humanity fairly soon.
dolske
jayh: you might take a look at http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/roc/archives/2010/01/video_freedom_a.html and http://shaver.off.net/diary/2010/01/23/html5-video-and-codecs/
Basstard`
Also, use an operating system such as GNU/Linux, perhaps gNewSense or Trisquel. Pure freedom.
SP1
hi all i need to ask a question
i have web of trust extension in latest firefox version and i wanna know it its settings are saved on my hd por on their server?
TannerF
?
it depends what addon it is
SP1
hi again tannerf
web of trust
extension normally known as WOT
zjblabs
why is firefox so retarded that it can't resume a download that failed?
SP1
it wasnt setup with a download resume option
zjblabs
I've wasted nearly 4GiB of bandwidth twice now
SP1
you need to find one thru google
look for a speedy download program. those usually have resume features built in
zjblabs
I want the time I spent downloading 8GiB back; I'd like a refund
SP1
well you wont get a refund for that
zjblabs
I mean god damn, I run out of disk space and it just plain quits?!
what's up with that?
SP1
yes that happens when you run out of disk space
zjblabs
so, in all seriousness, how do I fix this severe bug, SP1 ?
SP1
there is no bug
you just need a speedy download program that is free for windows
TannerF
zjblabs: if you settle down, we can try to help
SP1
and then youll have a resume stopped download thing but you must have enough hd space first
zjblabs
SP1: I do
and last time I checked I did...
SP1
you have enough hd room left for the entire dl?
zjblabs
had
SP1
let me check on a free speedy downloader hang on
zjblabs
then when I looked after it failed I was at 0 b
SP1: that's not a solution
I have a 3.7 gb part file on a server that *does* support resuming
SP1
if you ran out of space then it means you dont have enough space for the download
zjblabs
and about 3gb space I just liberated
with .3gb to go on the download
SP1
if the dl is 4gb
zjblabs
how can I salvage this situation?
yes sir
SP1
you cant dl a 4gb file into 3gb of space
zjblabs
heh, did you hear what I just said? 3.7 is ALREADY downloaded
with .3gb to go
and 3 gb free
Peng
If you still have the partial copy of the file, you may be able to resumt it with some other download tool.
Basstard`
Is this #tautology ?
zjblabs
Peng: how?
Peng
zjblabs: I don't know.
zjblabs
and thank you peng
Peng
To tell the truth, I disconnected a bunch of times earlier today, but... :D
TannerF
Peng: add ##fixyourconnection to the end of that, i think
SP1
but if you dont have enough hd space left then you cant resume the brokewn download
TannerF
not that
zjblabs
(for removing the os2mac threat to the last vestiges of my sanity...)
SP1: for the third time, I do...
SP1
it doesnt seem so zjblabs
Peng
This conversation is going in circles.
SP1
if youi had enough drive space left for the file then it wouldnt say 0 left
Basstard`
zjblabs: You need enough space to download something larger than the free space you don't have.
Peng
SP1: He has enough disk space now.
zjblabs
thank you peng
SP1
he said earlier he only liberated 3 gb
Peng
SP1: And there's only 300 MB of the file left to go.
SP1
and he said he wants to dl a 4gb file
Peng
SP1: Yes, and he already has 3.7 GB of it.
300 MB can fit in 3 GB. Probably.
SP1
how so if he only had 3gb to start with
Peng
Augh!
zjblabs
I'm glad at least one person in here understands me :D
Peng
SP1: He has 6.7 GB of free space!
SP1
well he didnt say that
Peng
Unless the download tool of choice does something stupid like making two copies of the file.
Basstard`
Peng: If he deletes the 3.7 GB file.
SP1
he said there was 0 now
Peng
OK, like I said, this conversation is going nowhere.
zjblabs
wow, os2mac is back at it ...
Peng
Uh-ohs.
SP1
then when I looked after it failed I was at 0 b
that is what you said uptop zjblabs
Samus_Aran
zjblabs: resume using an app that supports resume
SP1
meaning you ran out oif space to finish the file dl
Peng
Err.
zjblabs
Samus_Aran: how can I use what firefox already has?
SP1
peng he did say this uptop
then when I looked after it failed I was at 0 b
zjblabs
SP1: learn to read please :D
SP1
i did readf
Samus_Aran
zjblabs: it should have a file as .part, rename it
zjblabs: then resume with an app that supports resuming
zjblabs
hmm... I doubt this will work, but I'll give it a try...
Samus_Aran
zjblabs: why wouldn't it work ?
zjblabs
the download manager might reject firefox's .part (probably will)
Samus_Aran
zjblabs: wget --continue http://whatever.com/somefile.ext
zjblabs
Samus_Aran: heh, there we go :D
SP1
<SP1> and then youll have a resume stopped download thing but you must have enough hd space first
<zjblabs> SP1: I do
<zjblabs> and last time I checked I did...
<SP1> you have enough hd room left for the entire dl?
<zjblabs> had
Basstard`
If it's a bad resumer then it might want to copy the 3.7 first and then do something.
SP1
that is exactly what he said uptop
Samus_Aran
zjblabs: rename the .part file first, remove the .part part, heh
zjblabs
wouldn't it be nice if firefox was smart enough to do this for me?
Peng
Yes.
SP1: You're still missing the point. He has enough free disk space to complete the file, though not to hold another entire copy of it.
Samus_Aran
zjblabs: Opera has supported resume for most of a decade...
zjblabs
heh, that still doesn't fix the problem: that firefox doesn't
Samus_Aran
zjblabs: nope, but I gave you a work-around
SP1
firefox never came with a file resumer option
zjblabs
SP1: pause/start ??
SP1
not that i know of
ill look to nbe shure
zjblabs
and every once in a blue moon, firefox will resume when I hit retry...
Basstard`
Does it also depend on server? I guess it does.
Peng
Yes, the server has to support range requests.
SP1
well it seems that firefox 3.6 which im still getting used to does let you pause a download that is in progress and resune the paused download but i dont know of a broken download
