Davedan
can I tell FF which ip to go when requesting example.com ?
Peng
Davedan: That's what the DNS is for, no? :P
Davedan: You could put it in your hosts file. Dunno if there are any Firefox-specific solutions.
Davedan
Peng: I wish I could do it in FF :)
thanks
kbrosnan
Davedan: short of putting the ip in the address bar

hello
is there any way to block plugin detection in firefox?
besides the NoScript extension, that is
i don't want to block javascript entirely, just plugin detection
my googling around on the matter isn't turning anything up
Speeder
how I enter a site that firefox insists that is insecure?
powtrix
hi. is there a good plugin to block banner/ads like 'by google'?
Peng
powtrix: Adblock Plus

powtrix
let me check that
kbrosnan
Speeder: you might need to enable ssl 2 protocols that have been disabled
Speeder
kbrosnan: I alreayd found (I had to add it to exception)
it was a invalid certificate thingy
vivgrn
can someone guide me to the resources where i can read about how firefox works . i want to get into the nitty gritty of it and not just get a top level view
sybariten
oh great, i lost ~ 200 tabs
clever
mv -vi libflashplayer.so .mozilla/plugins/
[1]+ Segmentation fault firefox -P dev
this error is a pain, cant get flash to work anywhere
gburton
sybariten: what happens to me is that on monday I reboot my laptop, then through the week my tabs accumilate till I have about 500 or so
then by friday i shut down firefox instead of just putting my laptop on standby and its like "are you sure you want to close OVER 9000 open tabs"
how many of your 200 tabs are actually useful, instead of several hundred google searches and email accounts?
sybariten
gburton: not a lot of them, and i see what you're coming at... but having them disappear in some sort of silent crash that happened when the work PC was sleeping over the weekend just doesnt feel good
coz i dont know what i've lost
gburton
i see
sybariten
There were probably at least ten "cool software or system tips" in there....
i wonder if there's some rescue... some osrt of history or backup
gburton
good question, the history is of course stored, if you type into the URL bar it does matches, so you can probably find what you lost
Bizzeh
hi, is there any fix for firefox running html5 other than the xhtml hack?
neure
uh
looks like firefox isnt especially talented at downloading files from ftp
ftp://sourceware.org/pub/gdb/snapshots/current/gdb-7.0.50.20100208.tar.bz2
and similar seem to hang for me
while wget can get the files no problem
sybariten
gburton: actually, my hisgtory (of that kind) is malfunctioning at the moment.... really strange
coz i dont think you can turn it off?
anywho, i was thinking of some other kind of history. If there is perhaps some trace, somewhere, of my 200 tabs? in a config file or .dat file or something
mintux
are there any addones that disable or enable javascript for one page not total firefox ?
clever
sybariten: its sessionstore.js
mintux
I want to disable javascript for one page . and I don't want to set it for all of firefox and restart firefox
Cork
mintux: checkout noscript
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
sybariten
clever: what is that?
clever
sybariten: thats where firefox stores the list of tabs that are open in every window

sybariten
clever: c:\Documents and Settings\a001638\Lokala inställningar\Application Data\Mozilla\ perhaps somewhere there?
i'm a bit confused as to where FF stores all its files
clever: hm, naah... its 56 kb and seems to contain the tabs i have open now. So i guess its overwritten. :-(
clever
sybariten: yeah, if it was working right, it would have restored them already
Peng
Yeah...
clever
but there are other files starting with sessionstore like sessionstore.bak
Peng
It's remotely possible sessionstore.bak contains something more use -- darn, clever says everything I'm thinking. Why am I even here? :P
sybariten
ok
will check
OK, well no .bak files
i might just have to "Crying game" in the shower, relize that those tabs are gone, and then move on with my life
alabd
hello , where in firefox we can see ssl algoritm for a site?
sybariten
oh, by the way... i had had those tabs for approximately 2 months
clever
sybariten: yeah i do the same thing
it get to the point where i have too many tabs for my RAM and i just cant be bothered to even start that firefox profile
Peng
alabd: Page Info? Click on the favicon or hit Ctrl+I, or use the menus.
Haha, that happens to me, too. It's happening right now, actually.
sybariten
clever: haha
Peng
I wind up killing my sessionstore.js every few months to clean up.
sybariten
clever: i took a scfreenshot this january, of the... hmmm.. what do you call it, the process explorer of Win XP
clever
Peng: i cant bring myself to just kill them all
alabd
Peng where favicon ?
deff
sybariten: if you have vista or 7 you can try restoring previous version of that file
however i don't get why ff doesn't keep more backups of sessionstore.js
especially since it craps it up every now and then
Peng
clever: I usually don't do it intentionally. It's "Argh, Firefox is closed, just need it to check TV Guide, I'll use a temporary session to speed it up", then I open a couple websites, and before I know it have 15 tabs open so I can't just switch back to the previous session.
clever
Peng: exactly the same here:P
Peng: i made a session just for use on the cell modem, which would have no tabs open
it now has ~3 windows packed full of tabs :P
Peng
:D
clever
each tab on the bar is nothing but a favicon
Peng
Someone should write an extension that randomly closes tabs that haven't been focused recently. We'd never notice.
clever
lol

anyone know where I can download localization/language packs for firefox from the firefox ftp/http ? I'm using 3.6 btw
rjohnson19
tertitten: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:3
tertitten
rjohnson19: I need to link to the ftp, cause language for nowegian is not available at the addons site. ..
I've downloaded the norwegian pack before, only I can't find the url again
sybariten
deff: no, that would be a good practice!
for firefox i mean
deff
tabgroups manager helps a lot with tabiitis
but at least for me doesn't work very well with 3.6
thrashold
Is there a way to make the link color in the awesome bar not blue?
Is there way to make the awesome bar links readable when I'm using black background?
gavin
it should always be visible, unless the system theme you're using is broken
thrashold
It's dark blue
gavin
we get that color from gtk
gtk_widget_style_get(linkButton, "link-color", &colorValuePtr, NULL);
swerve
how do I get tabs in 3.6 to open at the end again instead of next to the tab they're opened from?
i can't find a setting for that
gavin
swerve: there's a hidden pref you can flip with about:config
have you tried out the new behavior for a while, though?
takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it it I think it ends up working better
swerve
ok - i found it, thx. i thought i would like it better, as on the surface it seems to make more sense
in practice, though, it can jumble up pages non-sequentially w/ multiple links because it opens up the newest one closest to existing tab

I can launch OGV files via firefox but not FLV files via firefox. Any suggestions to get FLV playback via firefox?

Hi, I have set parameters print.print_footerleft and print.print_footerright in about:config, but the print dialog simply ignores them. Am I missing something?
linusoleander
I dont know if I've a problem with my site or Firefox.
The problem is that I cant load an external url into an iframe
Renacor
Is there a way to tell firefox to make a put or post request to a page instead of a get request?
allsystemsarego
submit a form inside a javascript function?
Renacor
by just using the address bar
linusoleander
Any one has an answer to my question?
allsystemsarego
javascript:formSubmit('whatever');
kbrosnan

Does anyone know how to run firefox 3.6 under gdb?
Apparently 'firefox -g -d gdb' isn't doing the trick.
kbrosnan
https://developer.mozilla.org/En/How_to_get_a_stacktrace_for_a_bug_report
you'll need to have the debug build for your distro
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Debugging_Mozilla_with_gdb too

kbrosnan: Thanks, good links. :)

I have set parameters print.print_footerleft and print.print_footerright in about:config, but the print dialog simply ignores them. Am I missing something?
kbrosnan
i've never made use of those prefs, no idea
vivgrn
does typeof have a return value of "function" , ie. when the input to that is a label for a function ?
sdwilsh
vivgrn: IIRC, yes
dgd_
kbrosnan, re: files are local
kbrosnan
you'll need to have a mock page and have the os serve the files with a good mimetype
dgd_
so no command line to get around that? firefox myflv.flv does not work...
firefox -some command myflv.flv???
kbrosnan
you would need to build some page that correctly makes use of the file
dgd_
kbrosnan, ok, thanks

http://pastebin.org/88353 how does the args point out through the callee property to the function f , while it is running in the function check() . are the arguments passed by reference?

My app is using http://demos.hacks.mozilla.org/openweb/FileAPI/. I'm looking for alternatives for browsers that doesn't implement the HTML5 file API yet. What are my alternatives, other than uploading to my own server?
can I somehow have the user provide an URL, and then download that URL with javascripts?
or would it have to go through my server? (I.e. the same domain)
kbrosnan
most multi file uploaders use java or flash for browser coverage from what i've seen
augustl
currently, everything in the app happens on the client, so I'd like to keep it that way
flash and/or java is certainly an option, tnx
cross domain stuff is usually handled with a script tag that contains a script calling a global function, right?
s/that contains a/pointing to a/

Anyone I can assist today?
I can provide basic support for Firefox, Sunbird, and Thunderbird
