I just had a cool idea for firefox
there should be a plugin which lowers the volume of sound playing on any tab other than the one you're on
kbrosnan
the problem is that sound is handled by plugins in most cases
and those plugins use direct calls to the system
Renacor
Is there a way to tell firefox to make a put or post request to a page instead of a get request?
Peng
Submit a form?
A POST form, to be specific.
There may be, but it would be quicker to whip up a trivial HTML page with a form.
oconnore_
hello, is there a video sharing site that supports ogg based video codecs (that will play with firefox html5)?
like youtube, but oss friendly...
rjohnson19
DailyMotion does.
oconnore_
sweet!
rjohnson19: do I have to enable html5 support or something?
rjohnson19
http://openvideo.dailymotion.com
oconnore_
they use flash by default
ah

moodboom
hrmph, my ff downloads are corrupt. dl's work in other browsers (konqueror). using gentoo. rebuilt mozilla-firefox, xulrunner, firefox-bin packages, same result. fsck'ed drive, no luck. any advice?
Renacor
Peng: I am trying to test a REST interface, so I just need to make a POST/PUT/DELETE request to a page
augustl
the "Don't as me again" checkbox on slow running scripts - how long will that last? Per tab? Per session? Forever?
shelldude
how do i get my firefox fonts to look as my konq fonts? in firefox they are less "glossy" ...
I440r
how do i make firefox close when i hit the close button instead of deatching?
this happens in both linux and windows
dancrew32
is there a way to move a tab left and right via the keyboard (instead of having to click and drag it to the next position)?
kinda like how we switch tabs
it would be nice to be able to reorder them from the keyboard
kbrosnan
dancrew32: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Keyboard+shortcuts
though it might be broken since tabs are no longer focusable
dancrew32
ah that sucks that you have to focus it
i'm able to tab to the "tabs"
but you have to do that before you can go ctrl left / right
if there was a shortcut to focus the current tab that would be swell then
ah do this: ctrl + k, tab then ctrl + left arrow (or right arrow)
that's pretty efficient

hi, i'm having trouble importing a 'certificates.p12' file .. i'm following this guide; https://support.exaprotect.com/p12-OLH/p12_Certificate_Installation_Guide-2-2.html .. but on ubuntu and i'm using firefox 3.6
when i browse for the file and hit ok to import it nothing happens; it doesn't ask for a password or anything ..
an odd thing is that when browsing for the file i got to select "show all files" in the file manager; it seems files with the .p12 suffix aren't displayed
(i have no addons)
kbrosnan
does the cert show in the your certs tab/>
lnostdal
also, if i try to import a random file that i know is _not_ a certificate file (say, an .mp3 file) it gives no error message
no, not there
ah, wait .. yes, i was at the wrong tab .. i was under the "Authorities" tab .. *shrug*
still weird that it did not give an error message when i provide it with any old random file
stevecam
i just cant let it idle
this is getting stupid
there must be a memory leak in firefox or something
firefox is now officially a memory hog
CoJaBo-Aztec
Any addons?
Some of them leak memory like a firehose.
stevecam
no addons
i will start in safe mode just to make sure this time, but i havnt installed any addons
its just ridicules, i went out and came back, firefox is now using 1gb of RAM
only had 4 web pages open
oconnore_
flash?
stevecam
in one of them
oconnore_
when i load flash pages, i will sometimes have 100% cpu, and .5 - 1 gig of ram. I have to kill and restart
but i think it is just adobe sucking at linux
looking forward to html5...
CoJaBo-Aztec
HTML5 video support is a mess.
FF doesnt support H.264.
stevecam
safe mode and firefox is using 300mb
oconnore_
CoJaBo-Aztec: It's not that FF doesn't support H.264, it's that Google doesn't support Ogg.
H.264 needs to die.

auscompgeek
I agree.
CoJaBo-Aztec
Why?
stevecam
i second that motion
oconnore_
H.264 is not free. AKA, a firefox with H.264 will no longer be free.
CoJaBo-Aztec
Yes, but does any other codec even come close?
kbrosnan
so people don't need to front millions of dolars to build a web browser that includes <video> h.264
oconnore_
CoJaBo-Aztec: Yes, you won't be able to tell the difference.
CoJaBo-Aztec: The only difference is one costs money and one doesn't.
CoJaBo-Aztec
oconnore_: Any demos to back that up?
oconnore_
hmm, not in my pocket. but the video on mozilla.org is .ogg I believe
auscompgeek
Yes it is.
CoJaBo-Aztec
I want to see 15kb video, 30 seconds long and about cellphone quality; and a 15mb 1080p high-def video one minute long that is completely indistinguishable from its 600MB source- in Theora.
stevecam
meh, i use community-based software even if it is worse then a closed source alternative
CoJaBo-Aztec
If someone can find those, I will be 100% convinced that Theora doesnt suck.
auscompgeek
I sometimes use IcoFX to edit icons, even though it is closed-source.
stevecam
its not as if we are running out of space to put these larger files on
CoJaBo-Aztec
?
oconnore_
CoJaBo-Aztec: I'm not really going to spend 10 minutes doing your research for you. The point is, just like you can't tell the difference between mpeg and wmv, or between mp3 and wma, you won't be able to tell the difference between H.264 and OGG.
they are equivalent.
they render equally
neither one is significantly bigger
CoJaBo-Aztec
At very low bitrates, theres a pretty huge difference. MP3, for example, sounds terrible, but Vorbis is still excelent down to at least 56k. Suposedly AAC is better, but the encoder for it keeps crashing..
auscompgeek
wow...
oconnore_
Uh, so now you are supporting ogg?
CoJaBo-Aztec
Huh?
oconnore_
vorbis is an ogg format.
I'm confused.
auscompgeek
It isn't Vorbis, it's Ogg Vorbis.
oconnore_
:)
CoJaBo-Aztec
The OGG formats are clearly supiriour in audio (Vorbis). I am not convinced they are the best when it comes to video (Theora).
kbrosnan
ogg is an container, theora/vorbis is a compression format
auscompgeek
Don't confuse me!
oconnore_
CoJaBo-Aztec: Hmm, there is "best", and then there is "best that I'm willing to pay money for". And I'm not willing to pay to save a few bytes on a video download.
bandwidth is cheap
and unless there is an order of magnitude difference, I'm not buying it.
CoJaBo-Aztec
Is there any proof the difference is small tho?
I simply cant find any evidence to that.
kbrosnan
and the reverse? using a current theora encoder (1.1)?
oconnore_
CoJaBo-Aztec: Uh, if you are that curious, record raw video and encode it in both at equal quality.
auscompgeek
:D
CoJaBo-Aztec
oconnore_: I cant get a Theora encoder (mencoder, IIRC) to even go that low in bitrate. Thats the problem :/
Is there even any GUI encoder for Theora on Windows?
kbrosnan
vlc sort of
CoJaBo-Aztec
VLC's encoded quality degrades massively before even getting close to the target bitrate..
StrongOrder
Hey there! I need an addon located here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14762 I cannot seem to download it :( Can anyone help?
kbrosnan
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/14762
StrongOrder
no problems installing other addons, just this one give me "not found" error
kbrosnan
able to download it here
auscompgeek
You get a 404? :S
StrongOrder
kbrosnan, thanks! there are 2 linux version. which one do I get?
auscompgeek, yes I do
auscompgeek
StrongOrder, get the latest version.
kbrosnan
not sure
there are two links
auscompgeek
Wait while I start up ChatZilla.
StrongOrder
Yay! got it
auscompgeek
Wait, I should update ChatZilla to the latest nightly :P
Ademan
eh... this is almost definitely the wrong place to ask, but ##javascript isn't being very useful... how can I include javascript version 1.7 source files into an html file? I currently have: <script type="text/javascript;version=1.7" src="foo.js"></script> but my alert() (which is the very first line) doesn't display, and nothing i define in the source makes it to the scope of the html doc...
auscompgeek
I'm not sure if the version belongs in the type, does it?
Ademan
auscompgeek: according to the mozilla developer docs it does, but obviously something's not right...
i should also note that when my code was inline, the version was required, and worked
auscompgeek
oh.
augustl
I set a breakpoint in firebug. Can I somehow run arbitrary JS in the current breakpoint?
playing around with the variables etc.

hi here
anyon e knows of a way to take a screenshot of a whole web page , not only visible parts uner linux ?
DelphiWorld
hi
may i ask thinderbird related question?
kbrosnan
DelphiWorld: #thunderbird is on irc.mozilla.org or http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging
DelphiWorld
kbrosnan: ok, i allready got the reply, thank you!
kbrosnan
ok, some people don't read /topic
DelphiWorld
kbrosnan: sory;) i am a blind person;)
kbrosnan: the topic is not so visible to me in this client
buckfast
Hi. How do I change Firefox menu fonts under Kubuntu?
never mind, setting layout.css.dpi to 0 did the trick
dodddummy
when i type a word in the address bar which isn't a url, it does a yahoo search. how can i change that to do a google search? i've read lots of things that tell me to change keyword.url and i've done that but it doesn't help.
McL0vin
hi
i installed FF tree tab style in admin account, but it doesn't show in regular user accounts
can someone help me please
kbrosnan
McL0vin: extensions are user specific
dodddummy: what is the value of about:config keyword.url?
McL0vin
oh so i will have to install it in eachone
kbrosnan
yes
McL0vin
cool thanks you
dodddummy
kbrosnan, i just changed it to see if that setting was working at all to: http://bing.com/results.aspx?q=
still going to yahoo.
kbrosnan
dodddummy: could be isp based dns inteception
dodddummy
kbrosnan, can i change that?
kbrosnan
depends on your isp, try searching Your_ISP stop dns redirect
cenar
Hmm don't think I was ever told Nightly Tester tools aren't compatible with a firefox version
dodddummy
kbrosnan, i called my isp. so far they're telling me they don't use dns redirection.
kbrosnan
dodddummy: does the text of the yahoo page say anything about a company at all?
Peng
Even in tiny print at the bottom?
dodddummy
kbrosnan, the url it shows is: wwww33.websearchservice.net/search?qo=help&rn=IQXpyl-Xfd0WQvU
Peng
The about page at the bottom describes it like DNS redirection, but doesn't mention a specific company.
kbrosnan
oh sounds like spyware/malware
Peng
There is an opt-out link.
kbrosnan
there is?
dodddummy
aha
i'm still hanging online with my isp. to see if it's something they setup or some sort of malware i inadvertently installed.
mavhc
easy to test if it's the isp, use another browser/the command line
Peng
kbrosnan: Yeah, on the about page. Who knows if it works, though...
mavhc
can we let non registered people talk again?
kbrosnan
i don't think i have permissions to do that
Peng
Unless my client is wrong, it does.
17:12:54 -!- mode/#firefox [+cnt]
dodddummy
my isp confirmed on the 2nd call they do use dns redirection. and are telling me how to disable it. i'm only hanging on to see if the instructions are different than that optout page peng pointed out
kbrosnan
Peng: no there is something, http://webchat.freenode.net is broken
mavhc
they changed ircd's and it's done differently now
Peng
? ? ?
mavhc
annoying, can't change nick either, only reason to change was to identify
Peng
Oops, you're right, there's a +q rule for unidentified users.
dodddummy
nope. that's the way to opt out.
actually, it doesn't opt out. instead it still uses the service but just uses the service i chose. it still doesn't use the keywor.url
Peng
What do you mean?
dodddummy
on the opt out page it makes you pick a search engine.
Peng
What the hell.
There's no "no search engine at all" choice?
dodddummy
and it uses that search engine. i still have keyword.url set to bing. but it uses google now
peng, hmmm, maybe there was and i didn't see it.
Peng
dodddummy: "None -- DNS Error Page" at the bottom.
I mean, it's the last thing on the list.
dodddummy
peng yeah, i missed that.
lemme pick that one.
Peng
Unless they redirect all port 53 traffic, you can also switch to some less-evil third-party DNS servers.
deff
hey
Peng
#freenode says the +q shouldn't be necessary anymore. OTOH, it got the old DCC/keylogger spam while I was asking. :-\
Not sure who originally set it in here.
deff
is there any way to find out if some firefox crash comes from an extension or firefox itself?
dodddummy
Peng, so if i chose none should it then use whatever i have the keyword.url set to or just give me http://wwww33.websearchservice.net/not_found?
Peng
dodddummy: It _should_ return nice, normal NXDOMAIN responses, letting Firefox do its keyword.url thing, but whether it really _does_...
dodddummy
because it still doesn't use keyword.url. it goes to http://wwww33.websearchservice.net/not_found
:)
Peng
That's awesome.
And completely misses the point.
It's possible it might just take a bit longer to work, but if not, you're left switching to third-party DNS servers.
dodddummy
i'll try that.
