Peng
kavakava: H.264? From what I've read, Mozilla is agaisnt proprietary formats.
kavakava: Google around.
kavakava
Yeah, I saw that they didn't like it, but maybe an addon or even a fork could fix it.
xangua
............
Peng
kavakava: Well a fork is technically capable of doing anything.
Dunno if add-ons can add <video> formats.
kavakava
Ok, haven't studied the capabilities to the addons, but a patch would do the trick. :-P
All my videos are encoded with x264, and I don't want to transcode them to ogg.
mzz
I don't think an addon could do this.
latenite
I know this is probably not the "right" place....but where can I inform myself about "using the web anyonymous". ... how can I hide my identiy on the net?...looking stuff to read up on
kavakava
Are you thinking in the area of tor/privoxy?
Or more like setting up a proxy on a server, etc?
latenite
kavakava, yes somethink like that
well i m clueless
what i want is: that my ISP can not see where i am sufting at?
i have heard my ISP is selling data about "illegal" surfers to some companeis

Peng
VPN, SSH SOCKS proxy, Tor...
latenite
ok by example pls: let say i want to dl some stuff from a website...call it www.stuff.com...how would i do it 100% anonymously
Peng
I feel like I'm encouraging illegal behaviour here.
latenite
no nothing like that. i am curious about HOW to do it.
i understand about DNS and the allregular IP things......BUT i can hardly imagine to become 100% anonymous
Peng
Being 100% anonymous is difficult.
And probably not entirely possible if, like, the entire NSA is after you.
latenite
from what i know (very litte) i feel like it cannot be done.
ok my fqa: how do i KNOW that the proxy i have "picked" realy does not store data about me?
kavakava
latenite: If it's because your ISP are selling information I would just rent a dedicated server and set up a proxy for the surfing and let the box do the downloading, and then just use ftps or something similar to transfer the files encrypted to your own computer.
latenite
if i rent a server and make it my surfingproxy...wouldn the "renting" company have my personal data (like name an billing address)?
Peng
latenite: 1.) You don't know that the proxy you chose does not store data about you.
latenite: 2.) Yes, the server company would have your personal information.
latenite
Peng, well isn't it that a reason NOT to trust the proxy then???!
Peng
kavakava: 1.) A VPS would be fine. 2.) Use SFTP, not some sort of FTP-based abomination. :P
latenite: Yes.
latenite
Peng, wouldn't the proxy be traceable...and the company be held responsable for my acttions?
Peng
latenite: Depending on the jurisdiction, most likely you would be held responsible for your actions, not the company.
latenite: Ask your lawyer.
latenite
tahts what í ment...so that kind of proxy would NOT protect me from being charged
Peng
latenite: Yes, well, being a criminal is fraught with danger.
latenite
lets just keep it technical....or lets call it "moral" or...the right for privacy
Peng
(Action) shrugs.
latenite
its not necessarily illegal.....but what i m trying to do be is "technical invisble"
well so renting a proxy is damnwell senseless. Why would peope do that then?
Peng
latenite: Perhaps you just want to avoid some crap your ISP does.
alus
I'm curious about better alternatives to window.onerror, are there any?

kavakava
Peng: 1.) Heh, I suspect he would use it to torrent, and imo dedicated servers are more bang for the buck. - 2.) Yes, you're right. I only use scp, and I never remember what is what of ftps and sftp. ;-)
latenite: I do it because I don't want my boss to see what I'm doing.
The RPS1 from OVH are actually pretty good if you only need a simple proxy and some other stuff.
I use it as a proxy, irssi, some times torrent (it's slow), backup for my config-files, DNS/ping surfing and so on.
And yeah, a friend borrows it as a IRC server. Runs pretty well with 150-200 users.

hello, what is the most thin font I can use with css ?
t3rk3l
gn8
JoeSomebody
can i install ff 3.6 in karmic koala?
i am fairly new to ubuntu
xangua
use either 'ubuntuzilla' or 'firefox-stable ppa' JoeSomebody to install the latest stable version in ubuntu
JoeSomebody
i don't know what they are , yet, thanks
reading up ...
harth
JoeSomebody: you can always download the tar.gz file from firefox.com and extract it on your Desktop or something
then run the file called 'firefox' in the extracted folder
JoeSomebody
ok
then, can i import my febe backup made in xp and 3.6 ?
i assume yes
harth
maybe, I don't know much about what febe does exactly, it's worth a try though
JoeSomebody
yep :)
the file firefox, run, or run in terminal?
harth
either one, both will open it
I usually drag the firefox file to the toolbar at the top of the desktop to make a nice shortcut to 3.6
JoeSomebody
firefox is just awesome

is there an add-on or a setting that i can enable for me to find out which tab is consuming the process proc % and memory %?
Peng
No.
Cork
a bit extended, not yet :)
Peng
:D
Qb_Master
how do you rename a page saved with firefox while keeping it linked to the <filename>_files folder?
I'm sorting thru my files and I have a file named page4.html, with a page4_files folder
I want to rename it to something more specific
Peng
Ehh, find+replace?
Qb_Master
but if I rename the file it's going to disassociate with that folder
Peng
Should only take 30 seconds with a not-terrible text editor.
Qb_Master
ehh...
I wish firefox would find a way to store the html file and its dependancies altogether in one file
would remove a lot of clutter
Cork
Qb_Master: there is extensions that give you that
Qb_Master
ooh do you know of one offhand? if not dnt worry I'll search
that'd be great
Cork
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/212
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13251
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13136
anough?
:)
*enough
Qb_Master
gracias :)
that should be useful in the future
Cork
its actaully better to have this in extensions, as then you can support what you like to use, instead of a lot of un needed formats :)
Qb_Master
tho it still prolly should be built into the browser :p
hmm
yea but it takes more memory that way
Cork
not much
Qb_Master
lol firefox already uses a crazy amount of memory on my comp since I have so many addons/extensions
all of which I use..
Cork
Qb_Master: all nodern browsers taks quite alot of memory if you check
... *modern
Qb_Master
yea but like 200+MB?
Cork
thats nothing
i'm around 500+ ram and 600 swap
Qb_Master
well of course it's nothing in terms of the RAM computers have today
Cork
(close to the same in chrome)
Qb_Master
but even photoshop is only takin up 81MB ram
and photoshop is horrible at memory handling
past that the largest prog is explorer.exe with 45MB
(RAM)
so in comparison to other processes it's huge
Cork
ya, but i would actaully say that crome has less it has to do then a browser
its sick how much they need to handle in a browser
Qb_Master
idk I think it's possible to get a little better memory usage than that..although in my case like I said it's partially from the addons/extensions I require
paul424
I have radio podscasted as windows media player http://www.polskieradio.pl/sluchaj/#, now which application to use to hear it ? uhh Isuppose some firefox plugin would be suitable but which one ?
uhhh its embended into www so I cannot even gues the exact link for the podcast ... just a button which seems to trigger the windows MP./
Cork
Qb_Master: they work on it for each release to make the memory use reduced
Qb_Master: but a number of around 20-60 mb of ram per tab sin't bad if you ask me
Qb_Master
what pages take 20-60MB ram?
other than porn of course
Cork
Qb_Master: most active pages do (not only static text and some borders)
Qb_Master: think about that images are stored decompressed, and javascript, flash, java...
it goes on and on
Qb_Master
heh if that were truly the case firefox would crash on me quite often..cause I have 150+ tabs open sometimes in it :p
Cork
paul424: the windows media player plugin, or quick time plugin
paul424
uhh sorry dudes, my OS is linux.
Qb_Master
granted that's about the point it starts lagging
Cork
Qb_Master: you forgot that when it goes up high, the memory is swaped
Qb_Master
yeh

Hello, how do I disable the action of after add-ons are updated/installed, the addon window pops up to show what addons are newly updated?
BradleyS
i'm having a problem where links opened by external applications result in 2 firefox windows. one blank, one as expected. ideas?
i've disabled all add-ons, etc, no luck
Cork
BradleyS:external links always open in new window or new tab (depending on the arguments sent to firefox)
BradleyS
i should clarify. when firefox is *closed* and i click a single link from another app, i get 2 windows
regardless of the app. ff 3.6 os x, upgraded from 3.5 which did not exhibit this issue
Cork
BradleyS: yes, thats what i meant
BradleyS: its so the your old tabs can load (if you have that options active)
BradleyS
i don't think you're understanding me
i do not have window/tab restore enabled
new windows are set to open in tabs instead
clicking on a link should 1) launch firefox and 2) display one window with that url
i'm getting 2 windows, one with the url and other blank
thanks for helping, there's just no way this is desired behavior
Cork
as i've said three times now, its intended
BradleyS
please provide me with some documentation reflecting this, if you are willing
after some days of googling, it seems this is the same issue http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/1/563008

hi.. after configuring and installing firefox.. using configure -parms / make / make install.. how do i uninstall it?
Raccoon
Has Firefox added a 'Chrome style Task Manager' yet, to identify where all my ram is going? I suggested this feature sometime in '04~05
is Iceweasel no longer being developed?
paul424
Raccoon: an now you have joined the chrome team in revenge, and you implemented it :)
Raccoon
no. i merely sold the idea to Google for seven figures
paul424
chrome is getting stronger and stronger and firefox dies, firefox team : come back come back , and the Raccon : no , now die !!!
Raccoon: err figures ... sorry I am not native speaker .
Raccoon
it means $1,000,000 or more
paul424
yeah, I wish it would be also as easy to sell ones ideas :\.

hey guys any suggestions possibly on redirecting mobile users to a subdomain with apache?
Raccoon
with user-agent of course
but why bounce someone around based on their browser?
unless you're taking them to a fundimentally different site
Cork
Raccoon: firefox won't have the taskmanager untill it has separated tabs into its own process
Raccoon: and that will be around the end of this year
Raccoon
cork, at the moment i don't really care about individual tab usage
Cork
Raccoon: then what sould the taskmanager show?
Raccoon
i'm more interested in core usage, addon usage, sql usage, etc
Cork
"firefox is using x"?
Raccoon
eg
"prove to me that flash is really the problem"
Cork
there really is no way to identify that without making use of debug functions
Raccoon
since firefox devs always blame flash for all their woes
Cork
(without useing processes)
Raccoon: the oop build that will come in a few months (2.6.2-3 or so)
will have plugins in its own process
Raccoon
(i blame firefox devs for getting rid of mng support, which would have replaced flash)
cool
Cork
Raccoon: well i agree that mng should have stayed
but it wouldn't have replaced flash
Raccoon
it would have replace 90% of flash usage
being ad banners
Cork
uh... for me 99% of flash is used by movie players
but i use adblock plus
Raccoon
i'm not talking about time usage, but actual hit usage
Cork
same here
i see around one a month that isn't a movie player or some where around that
Raccoon
if there were 10 pages on the web with flash movie players, there would be 10 million pages with flash ad banners
Cork
Raccoon: ads ya, but i block those, not only for mem usage
Raccoon
most people do not
Cork
thats there problem :)
Raccoon
no. it is firefox's problem. :P
because flash is being used so extensively, firefox is using 800 mb of ram
chrome little over 20mb
Cork
well ya, firefox can make it move smoother, so the ad can disturb you even more...
no thx...
Raccoon
watch. Chrome is going to start supporting MNG
and we'll lose the entire japanese market to google
Cork
i hope so, then we might be able to force mozilla to add it again
(Action) is agenst apng
Raccoon: but what will really be a flash killer is svg support, not mng
Raccoon
you should check out the browser Off-By-One.
it's a completely self contained browser with HTML 3.2 support. 1.1 mb
