Banaticus
how can I selectively delete the things that Firefox likes to remember? For instance, page addresss. I want it to remember webchat.freenode.net, etc., but I want to delete most of the things in its memory
Is there a way to get a list?
quuxman
LiENUS: yeah, I'm thinking to set up the same thing :)
LiENUS: though you'd only be saving bandwidth from Firefox and Chrome users
LiENUS
and possibly safari
quuxman
but yeah, I definitely like the idea of reducing each page load to 1 or 3 HTTP requests instead of like 30
marko-_--
how do you clean the cookies in firefox?
kbrosnan
tools > clear private data (recent history)
Banaticus
marko-_--: Tools -> Options -> Privacy, on that page
marko-_--
oh
quuxman
I'm not understanding what the first "data" argument is for window.location.pushState() and .replaceState()

marko-_--
right, the blue text
you guys should change that, it's not that good visible
kbrosnan
?
quuxman
er, excuse me: history.pushState() and history.replaceState()
powertool08
Does anyone who uses stylish/greasemonkey know of a style which will turn the form field text white? My dark theme makes the field background black.
quuxman
LiENUS: damn, FF has not implemented the History interface
LiENUS
i thought 3.6 did
quuxman
oh, I'm using 3.5
LiENUS
i dont see it in the release notes
i guess i was wrong
kbrosnan
it is in the trunk if you mean html5 history
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Upcoming_Firefox_features_for_developers
CaMason
Does anyone know what standards are used for contact fields? What does Thunderbird use?
LiENUS
kbrosnan, yeah
kbrosnan
CaMason: #thunderbird is on irc.mozilla.org
CaMason
kbrosnan, thanks
quuxman
nope, not in 3.6 either
kbrosnan
correct quuxman, i said the trunk currently numbered as firefox 3.7
aoupi
hi
I got linked to some site with naked old men fu*king
and bunch of popups
couldn't close the tab
so I kill -9'ed firefox
I want my session back
but without fu*king old men
how do I do?
is there some firefox --no-old-man-sex option?
(no I can't google how...)
rjohnson19
aoupi: Try starting it and kill -9ing it again, the next startup should give the session restore dialog.
Peng
I'd open up sessionstore.js in a text editor that doesn't mind really long lines and edit hte URL, but that's a bit technical.
kbrosnan
edit sessionstore.js
Peng
What rjohnson19 said, too.

aoupi
Peng: oh, thanks
rjohnson19: yea, but I want the rest of the session back :)
Peng
aoupi: The file's all on one line, so, like I said, use a text editor that won't freak out.
rjohnson19
It'll let you pick and choose which tabs/windows to restore.
aoupi
Peng: no prob :)
zpao
aoupi: if you don't want to go hunting for the url, you can just change the recent_crashes number to like 5
(still in that file, should be right near the end)
aoupi
I did s/nobrain.dk/google.com
that worked :)
zpao
that will force the "you've crashed" page where you can uncheck the old-man-sex url and you can then restore
poutine
aoupi, I think the obvious solution is to stop surfing old gay sex sites
aoupi
I think the full flat theme must be interfering with the restore dialog where you can uncheck
poutine: if I ended up there on purpose I'd just enjoy it :D
LiENUS
does firefox allow you to catch function keys like catching f10 in a javascript event?
poutine
aoupi, http://zs1.smbc-comics.com/comics/20100223.gif
aoupi
poutine: :D
Marupa
Hi all, really quick question, cause it's bugging me. Whenever I close a firefox window, regardless of whether there are other windows open, regardless of if there are no other tabs open (ie, I have two firefox windows, one with one tab, one with two tabs, and I close the one with one tab) it asks me if I want to save session and quit, quit, or cancel. How come it does this? It didn't used to.
Oh, by the way, firefox 3.6 on windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.
poutine
Marupa, it's just a new feature that came sometime during 3.5 iirc
you can disable it or set the default behavior in the options
Marupa
Where at? I've been looking for a while and can't find anything.
poutine
tabs has the warning aspect
Marupa
I only see when closing multiple tabs. That I want a warning about closing multiple tabs. This is acting like I'm closing all of firefox and asking to save the session.
poutine
appears the other is in about:config
search for "sessionstore"
Marupa
not seeing anything about warnings or anything.
Not sure if I'm clear though. I want it to warn me when closing multiple tabs (yes/no) but not warn me when only closing one tab. What it's doing is whenever I close any window, regardless of anything in the window or whether I have other windows open, it asks to save the session.
zpao
Marupa: that shouldn't be happening. do you have any add-ons installed that might be doing that
Marupa
Got Adblock Plus, Speed Dial, Stumbleupon, and Xbmarks.
er, Xmarks.
zpao
hmm, none of those seem likely. regardless you shouldn't be getting a prompt to save session when closing 1 of many windows (unless those aren't browser windows)
Marupa
Yeah, they're browser windows. For instance right now I've got one tab in one window (about:config) and a java-based maximized program in another. If I close the about:config one, it asks 'Do you want Firefox to save your tabs and winodws for the next time it starts?' with 'Save and Quit' 'Quit' and 'Cancel' as options.
zpao
open another window, go to a site, then close it, see if you get the prompt
Marupa
also checked my processes list just now, just to be sure there's only one firefox process, and only one.
ok
Yes, it does.
wait, it didn't that time. What the heck?
zpao
yea, so i suspect the java window isn't a "browser" window in the same sense
Marupa
it used to be.
any way for it to see that the java window is still a 'browser' window and not ask?
zpao
tbh i didn't think you were supposed to get prompted
Marupa: i know exactly which bug is resulting in this, and i agree it's not the greatest experience
it will only happen though for the last browser window
it got added for 3.6 to prevent accidental losses of session. http://zpao.com/articles/20-better_session_restore_behavior
if you don't want prompts when quitting, you can set a hidden pref (or just check the box next to "don't ask again" which does it for you i think)
Marupa
Well, I do occasionally want to save my session, but more often than not, I don't.
SP1
hi all
is there anyone here that can help me with the prefs.js file for mozilla firefox?
JodaX
how do i add a protocol handler ?
PRISMA
HOLA A TODOS
:-D
adfdf-lap
Hello, when I click a link to, let's say, a .txt or a .pdf file, I get a prompt that only allows me to save the file
Is it possible for firefox to show me a dialog to choose an application to run instead with the filepath as the argument?
so when I encounter a .pdf, instead of having to save to disk and open up evince manually, I'd rather have it load my pdf viewer without any hassle.
Also, I don't necessarily like to save every pdf file I encounter in order to view it
Not a very active channel, eh?
xangua
adfdf-lap: normaly it ask you to 'open with'
or at least is an option
Peng
adfdf-lap: Right. #firefox on irc.mozilla.org may be more active.
adfdf-lap
no, there is no option besides Save file
Peng: I was not aware :p
Peng
(Action) points to the topic
adfdf-lap
Haha, who actually reads the topics?
Tamago
Consider network.http.max-connections... why does setting it to 256 cause everything to fail? takes 30 seconds to DNS, pages take minutes to load, etc, even if there are only a few tabs. 8MBit cable, plenty fast to support opening connections like that... and there's still the max-per-server limit so it would never get that high with so few tabs anyway.
LiENUS
welp
i did my first ajax
now lets hope it doesnt flake out on me heh
used jquery
simple zip code lookup
wasnt able to get the exact same keypress tho :/
Peng
adfdf-lap: One day, all IRC users will read topics, because I'll have stabbed the rest of them.
LiENUS
Peng, not if i stab you first
inthe face
Peng
LiENUS: By that time I will have been so consumed by my hate that I will be unstoppable.
LiENUS
lolwhat?
nm9
hi, can I use firefox with framebuffer?
kbrosnan
as some sort of text only mode?
nm9
yes
not X
kbrosnan
no, the core of the layout expects to be able to graphicly layout the site
nm9
ok
kbrosnan
assume you know about w3m and similar programs
nm9
yes I try it
I found netsurf seems it's support fb
panicgrip
Anyone know a way to make firefox always remember passwords?
To eliminate the prompt, which I constantly find myself overlooking and forgeting to hit Remember in?
Firefox 3.5.8 (just cause 3.6 isnt available through my package manager yet)
rjohnson19
panicgrip: The best I can find for that is manually editing a js file. This may work or may break your Firefox: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2009/11/05/hacking-firefox-to-always-auto-save-password-without-showing-notification-bar/
panicgrip
Sweet, Ill give it a shot, and make sure to backup.

why firefox cannot find it?
maxagaz
I can export json history file, but the import doesn't work, it asks me if I'm sure I want to import removing current history, I click Yes, but nothing happens
and I'm still in the current history
can I get the history into a web page ?
how to export firefox history ?
Nebbsen
i have the german client so the options may have different names: history - show all history - import export - export as html
xeon
anyone help java plugins installation on firefox?
Apachez
xeon: www.java.com
xeon
i checked that and did that. but failed.
i am on ubuntu
how do i know if firefox is compiled with gcc2.2.9?
Peng
Who what? 2.2.9? Really? Wasn't that horribly old 5 years ago?
Nonetheless, the URL about:buildconfig should show the compiler version.
Cork
he might have meant 2.29 >_>
2.2 is stonage...
Peng
Ah, now that I think about it, I think I was thinking of 2.95. (think).
xeon
Peng: java.com says that i should do ln -s nsgcc2.9 if firefox was compiled with gcc2.9
now gcc is 4.3
Cork
uh.. ops i read wrong >_<
Peng
Cork: I don't think you did.
Cork
i did, i talked about a completly different package...
(gdk >_<'')
well firefox is complied with 4.4 here so...
Peng
Cork: Oh.
xeon
why there is no enable-java label in setup?
also there is no clear-cache button
sektorNBA
hi
where can i find a pluguin to firefox that shows how long take dns, open page and all objects from a page
mzz
yslow may be able to do that
binom23
Hello
Is there a way to open my favorite ftp-client for addresses like ftp://
sektorNBA
YSlow analyzes web pages and why they're slow based on Yahoo!'s rules for high performance web sites.
mzz
(Action) nods
I don't know about overriding protocol handlers like that, sorry.
binom23
Isn't there a option flag in the config?
mzz
I think it's possible, but I'm not sure and I don't know how. If it's possible it probably involves setting something in about:config.
ShawnRisk
how come a white box comes up at the bottom when I hit back. The only way to get rid of this is hitting FIND. Any ideas?
Cork
ShawnRisk: try in safe mode
that sounds like its caused by an extension
ShawnRisk
Here are the add-ons: Add-On Compatibility Reporter. Better GReader. DrupalForFirebug. Firebug. Firefox PDF Plugin for Mac OS X. FireFTP. FoxFilter. Web Developer.
mzz
please just try in safe mode, if it works there disable all addons, re-enable half, etc, until you find the culprit
there's too many addons for us to know all bad ones
ShawnRisk
okay
I guess this was an addon. I uninstalled a few I am not using and if this comes back I will let everyone know.

Is there a way to enforce (as user, not as server) that firefox writes all cookies (even session cookies) to disk?
hzw2236719
:)
MaskRay
hi all, anyone gives me some advice about adding new mime type for firefox downloads
i know all mime types are contained in View - Preferences - Applications, but how to add new one
i have emerged firefox-bin for my laptop (gentoo 64) and there are no mime types (except 'file') deciding which application to run
i have to choose a application even 'Open Containing Folder'
kbrosnan
Firefox uses gnome file assoications to determine what program should be called for mime types
if gnome is not present then mailcap is used
MaskRay
gnome mime types are ok...
kbrosnan
http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ should explain how to register programs
http://library.gnome.org/devel/gconf/ for the manual
MaskRay
kbrosnan: thanks. i'll see
Necrosporus
Is it possible to make firefox use other Gtk theme by default?
Not system defauld
kbrosnan
no
Necrosporus
kbrosnan, are you sure?
kbrosnan
you can use a firefox theme, but there is no mechanisim for that
fairly
Necrosporus
can you recommend me non eye destroing theme for Gtk?
Raleigh is not so bad for eyes, but ugly
kbrosnan
that is subjective, gnome-look.org
i guess the bigest element of a theme that affects firefox is the icon set
Necrosporus
I use KDE3
