hno: are you sure it's firefox and not your isp?
hno: what are you typing into the address bar, what happens, what should happen?
hno
I am sure it's firefox. If I type a random unregistered domainname I get redirected to infoweb.eu, more interesting ones shows up a "search" page with various links..
Peng
hno: It may be your recursive DNS servers rather than Firefox. What do other browsers do? What about host/dig/nslookup?
hno
host/dig/nslookup properly return that the domains are not found or not working depending on the domain..
Peng
Oh, fun.
hno: Go to about:config (it's an URL), enter "keyword" in the filter box. Is the value of keyword.url something strange?
Um.
hno: Any adware extensions?
Aside from DNS, I don't know what usually causes this stuff...
hno
keyword.url goes to google.
Peng
Fun.
hno
disabled it now..
still the same...
belikeyeshua
As I said before, I have firefox 3.5.6... and it is very slow and crashes often.

mzz
firebot: cr
firebot
For us to see your crash reports, type about:crashes in the address bar, hit enter, drag the links directly to this chat. See http://s4c.in/11
mzz
(Action) is tempted to register that one
actually, it's unregistered :)
belikeyeshua: that was for you, obviously
hno: do search terms with a space in them also do the wrong thing?
hno: entered in the address bar, that is.
hno
mzz: No, those ends up at google
mzz
aha!
hno: then (unless you're running some very strange extension or malware or the like) that normally means it really is the dns server firefox is using. Or possibly a proxy.
hno
mzz: Doubt so. Looked at the ethernet traffic. DNS all returns correct. Then there is a DNS query for searchportal.information.com and the GET request sent there.
belikeyeshua
Ah, it says about:crashes is not a valid link and cannot be loaded.
mzz
belikeyeshua: are you using a linux distro's firefox?
hno
Sorry, missed to provide some information here.. also in mozilla.org #firefox..
mzz
hno: mzz there is mzz here, so I can just read up
belikeyeshua
Yes. Its Gentoo Linux.
mzz
belikeyeshua: do you have gdb installed?
belikeyeshua
Ah, whats gdb?
hno
A debugger for analyzins software failures..
mzz
belikeyeshua: emerge gdb
hno: does a fresh profile still do it?
hno
yes.
belikeyeshua
(Action) is emerging gdb
mzz
hno: most peculiar! It must be getting the name of that search provider from somewhere, and I have no clue where if it's not in your profile and it's not malware, and malware does seem a bit unlikely on linux
oh, and it's not receiving it off the network, obviously.
hno
Seems something has seneaked into this Linux box... another one works fine.
just tried from a fresh account on the same system. Same thing..
mzz
so! fresh firefox install on the same host was doing the same thing, right?

dx1
does firefox have build-in SOAP component?
mzz
hno: does pinging a nonexistant host fail as it should (unknown host error message)?
belikeyeshua
Well, firefox doesn't always crash... come to think of it. However, it acts up. Its been like this ever since I updated... but it seems to be getting worse and worse.
It uses most of my resources and therefore, it gets really slow.
mzz
hno: I know you tried dig/host/nslookup, but iirc those don't go through the same resolver library.
belikeyeshua: what is the actual problem? *does* it crash?
dx1: I think not but I could be wrong
dx1
mzz: Is there a good javascript library for SOAP services?
hno
mzz: Hmmm... right. What is going on here...
belikeyeshua
mzz: sometimes. Most of the times, it gets to be non responsive and I have to force quit it.
mzz
dx1: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=434697
belikeyeshua
It seems like there's a leak somewhere because it should not be using over 500MB of memory.
mzz
belikeyeshua: does it do the same thing in safe mode? Does it do the same thing with a fresh profile?
belikeyeshua
And sometimes almost all of my cpu
dx1
mzz: thanks
belikeyeshua
You mean a fresh firefox profile?
I don't know how to even start it up in "safe mode"
mzz
belikeyeshua: yes, see firefox -P -no-remote
belikeyeshua: safe mode is firefox -safe-mode, and you might want to try that one first
belikeyeshua: (make sure to exit firefox completely first)
hno: so did ping fail as it should?
hno
mzz: no, ping goes to some bastard search engine...
mzz
ah!
hno: got strace? anything fishy if you strace -efile ping somehost?
hno
Looking at it already..
dx1
mzz: Firefox rejects the component @ http://www.cyclone3.org/downloads/C3XULadmin.xpi with this message: "... will not be installed because it does not provide security updates"
mzz
nod
dx1: you can still install it by hand, iirc
been a while since I had to touch one of those though, so I forgot exactly what to do there
dx1
Thanks, will do
hno
mzz: Found... there is no search path configured in the resolver. so it tries whatevernotfound.domain as whatevernotfound.domain.net gah!
stupid resolver rules. A computername with just two parts do not have the tld as default search domain...
mzz
hno: I don't follow.
hno: what "domain" do you have set in resolv.conf?
hno
My computername is henriknordstrom.net. There is no explicit DNS search path defined in resolv.conf so the resolver automatically searches whateveritype.net if not found..
mzz
ahh
hno
and .net is... wel.. .net.
mzz
yeah, I see now.
hno
and firefox kindly displays it without telling me it got another domain name than I typed..
hno1
Yes! Fixed by making an explicit search path of .

infid
is there a way to save a bunch of sessions, by category? ie i want to have just tabs related to researching php in one session, and tabs related to researching javascript in another session, etc and be able to switch sessions at any time without them gettin erased?
rjohnson19
infid: give this a try: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2324
infid
oh sweet, i thought that was just for saving your last session only like firefox does by default but that looks like it might work. trying thanks
xUSSR
How to forbid reminder about not installed plugin?
rjohnson19
What reminder? The info bar thing when you hit a page that uses the plugin?
xUSSR
info bar, yes. on flash
he remind me about flash every time when I visit on translate.google.com
rjohnson19
type about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter; Filter = plugin
Preference name = plugin.scan.plid.all Right-Click the Value and toggle to false
oh wait
try plugins.hide_infobar_for_missing_plugin
xUSSR
there is "plugins.hide_infobar_for_missing_plugin;false"
I know what I should do with it :-)
thanks.
rjohnson19
your welcome :)

anyone aware why the shortcut listed at http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Keyboard+shortcuts doesn't apply to the linux version?
the keyboard shortcut to bookmark all tabs*
rue_mohr
anyone have a version of firefox that dosn't have the memory leak?
ss
"the" memory leak?
I didn't realize there was only one.
rue_mohr
hmm
good point
ss
:)
But like all software, Firefox has likely has memory leaks
rue_mohr
but I suspect its with the in-memory page cache
ss
Most often though, it's a plug-in (not add-on) that causes them.
Flash, in particular.
rue_mohr
hmm
anyone have a patch to make it to I can click on a flash thing and say "block flash from this site" ?
or plugin, I suppose
ss
You can just install the Flashblock add-on...
rue_mohr
will it allow me to selectivly block flash?
ss
I don't recall. But I know it'll allow you to selectively allow Flash
rue_mohr
OOooooo...
better
ss
Which seems better given all the random Flash ads all over the net.
rue_mohr
zippo:/files/programming/c/table2ihex# apt-cache search flashblock
zippo:/files/programming/c/table2ihex#
where do I get it?
ss
addons.mozilla.org
Peng
ss: Want +o?
ss
I don't care too much
It could've been removed for a reason!
Peng
ss: You have betrayed us and started working on Google Chrome?!
ss
Well, I *am* in #chromium.
Peng
Gasp!
ss: Anyway, I'd rather +o you, if you don't mind.
ss
Sure
Gh3rssp
(Action) notices that mzz has no +o, and he has +h on moznet
*cough* Peng *cough*
Peng
That cough sounds nasty; are you okay?
Gh3rssp
I was prompting you to +o mzz ;)
Peng
Gh3rssp: No. It seems like a good idea, but I'll defer to mconnor or someone.
Gh3rssp: I op ss because he _used_ to be opped automatically, but something seems to have gone wrong with that.
Gh3rssp
oh
i see
ss
Because Peng believes I'm the real ss, but really I'm a spy intent on finding out all about #firefox ops!
Gh3rssp
O.o
rue_mohr
sweet
Digicrime
hi
can someone help me?
Gh3rssp
Digicrime: Sure, whats your question?
Digicrime
lol
you're in the other channel
Gh3rssp
I'm everywhere
Digicrime
when firefox starts up it says this: error reading link-handlers.js: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) [nsIFileInputStream.init]" nsresult: "0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://launcher/content/overlay.js :: anonymous :: line 193" data: no]
Gh3rssp
Need to reinstall
Digicrime
reinstall what?
Gh3rssp
firefox
a clean install
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Live+Chat+troubleshooting+guide#Clean_installation
Digicrime
i've already done that
though
so now what, Gh3rssp?
Gh3rssp
a clean install, or a normal reinstall?
Digicrime
i did both and it never shows this unless i have a certain add on disabled
it must be an add on
how do you know that i would need to clean install?
Gh3rssp
I know things.
You can also try a new profile
xangua
did you try with a fresh fx profile Digicrime ¿
Digicrime
is this error message im getting causing a problem thats hurting anything?
Gh3rssp
Peng: we should totally get wolf to set up another instance of Firebot using it's factiods here :D
Digicrime
xangua: im not ready for that
Peng
Gh3rssp: Or trick someone into patching Mozbot to support multiple networks...
Gh3rssp
hmm...
Like wolf! :P
Peng
Gh3rssp: Or forcing everyone to leave this channel and go to irc.mozilla.org.
Gh3rssp
ick
dolske
Digicrime: that sounds like a problem with an extension. Neither link-handlers.js nor chrome://launcher/ is part of Firefox itself.
Digicrime
i think its chatzilla
Gh3rssp
Ohh, i'd not thought about that
Chatzilla would be a good bet.
dolske
hmm, I don't see a link-handlers.js, chrome://launcher/, or overlay.js in chatzilla.
Digicrime: do you have an addon called "Launcher" installed? It's using link-handers.js.
Digicrime
yes
yes i do!
so what do i do with it?
Gh3rssp
Probably disable that
Digicrime
yay!
thank you!
dolske
you could uninstall it, or uninstall and then reinstall it and see if the problem goes away.
Digicrime
im just going to unistall
dolske
not sure what it's doing or if that's causing a real problem.
Gh3rssp
(Action) should make a mozmill "test" that "tests" restarting firefox
Digicrime
yeah
say, your name is familiar
Gh3rssp
mine?
Digicrime
yeah
ive seen it in wikipedia before the chat rooms that is
Gh3rssp
oh
i'm in a few wikipedia rooms
Digicrime
thanks
bye
