i'm probably missing something obvious, but here's the problem: although I set Content-Encoding: utf-8 and Content-Type: text/xml;charset=utf-8 in the http headers, Firefox's Tools > Page Info still shows the file as being in ISO-8859-1. Safari and IE render the page appropriately, but FF shows two unwanted chars instead of the single correct one. What am I doing wrong?
kbrosnan
jgarbers: site?
jgarbers
unfortunately it's an internal app
what would it use other than Content-Encoding and Content-Type to determine the character encoding?
kbrosnan
and you've verified the headers? live http headers extension or the command wget -S --spider http://www.example.com
jgarbers
kbrosnan: well, i used curl -D -
kbrosnan
ok
jgarbers
kbrosnan
firefox should respect any server headings above any other settings
jgarbers
you'd think :-)
and there's hardly anything in the file..

kbrosnan
cached? ctrl + shift + r? view > character encoding > autodetect is set to off.
jgarbers
whoa
i had the text in a not-well-formed html document
when i wrapped the whole thing in good HTML it's happy now
unfortunately the issue here comes up when i'm supplying HTML fragments via Ajax
or if i wrap it in XML
weird
the problem *appears* to be that ff is not honoring server headers when it gets something other than a full html document& if the stuff coming in is xml, for example, or an html fragment being supplied by ajax and stuffed into the page
in those cases it seems to encode as ISO-8859-1
that doesn't seem like the sort of problem that wouldn't have been addressed, so i'm wondering if there's something else i need to be doing
auscompgeek
jgarbers, I'm sorry, what was your problem?
jgarbers
auscompgeek: thanks. i am sending utf-8 encoded content to FF, and although my Content-Encoding and Content-Type headers are set to utf-8...
ff is handling it as ISO-8859-1
auscompgeek
link?
kbrosnan
internal
jgarbers
auscompgeek: sorry, it's internal. i've checked the headers
kbrosnan
what is the mime type being sent?
auscompgeek
oh, ok then, I probably won't be of any use.
jgarbers
text/xml or text/html
kbrosnan
nm that is in the pastebin
jgarbers
auscompgeek: thanks anyway
auscompgeek
(Action) nods
kbrosnan
jgarbers: one thing to verify would be Firefox's behavior w/ a new profile. http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles
jgarbers
kbrosnan: a possibility, but the behavior is consistent in FF on a Windows box as well as on a Mac
so it seems unlikely that it's a local configuration problem, i think
kbrosnan
ah ok
(Action) is dinnering
jgarbers
have a clue. i checked the headers with curl and saw my utf-8. however when requesting from firefox, i snooped the http and my server is indeed saying the content is iso-8859-1. so it's not an FF problem but elsewhere.
i'm *guessing* that since 8859 is listed first in FF's accept-charset, maybe my server (CherryPy) thinks it should try that
more to find out. thanks for your help, kbrosnan
auscompgeek
jgarbers, is the encoding set to autodetect universal? :)
jgarbers
auscompgeek: thanks, i found the problem. my embedded server (cherrypy) hadn't been told to use utf-8 exclusively; when FF asked for iso-8859-1 as its first choice CP tried to do it.
i think i'm working now. :-)
to rephrase: i know *i'm* working. I *think* *it's* working.
andy_t_roo
is it possible to have firefox open a new tab next to teh currently selected one, rather than at the end of the list?

auscompgeek
Install an extension, such as Tabberwocky.
Peng
Doesn't Firefox 3.6 do that by default?
auscompgeek
A new tab&
Not new tabs from links.
GSF1200S
how do I delete a story ive already read when it is displayed under a live bookmark?
so, say I have CNN listed as a live bookmark. I open a story listed under CNN's bookmark. Now its marked as read, but how do I delete it so the title doesnt show in the CNN live bookmark list?
schroedinbug
Is there any way to get Firefox 3.6 to NOT beep when I close tabs via keyboard shortcuts? I'm having the issue with Firefox 3.6 on Mac OS X 10.6.2
Gh3rssp
Doesn't for me on Linux or windows, (fwiw)
GSF1200S
how do you close tabs with a keyboard shortcut?
just so I can try
im on linux with firefox 3.6, so ill see if it does for me
auscompgeek
GSF1200S, Ctrl+W or on Mac, Cmd+W
GSF1200S
yeah, no beep or sound here
schroedinbug
GSF1200S: What auscompgeek said
I don't on Linux either, but that might be related to not having system beeps in general on that system.
olympus
I'm having a problem with FF3.6.3pre. I have to reinstall it to get it to start. Anyone else experiencing that?
kbrosnan
olympus: that version sounds a bit odd
auscompgeek
sort of odd&
tuxsbro
I was wondering if anyone knows of an addon that tells me when a link (or any element even) has some javascript bound to the click event
If not maybe ill make one, I was thinking it could put a icon in the status bar next to where the href shows for links
..too bad I never made a FF addon before :P
JodaX
so
reporting a DOS on firefox
for(;;) { alert(1337); }
firefox locked
kthx
auscompgeek
Fx version?
JodaX
what ?
every version
auscompgeek
You sure?
JodaX
yes
auscompgeek
You even tested nightlies?
JodaX
no
rjohnson19
Thats just an unbreakable loop of alert dialogs, right? This: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61098
JodaX
yes
mofo, its a unbreakable loop of alerts damn right
auscompgeek
Er, not really, I was able to break using AlertCheck.
JodaX
AlertCheck is what ?
auscompgeek
an extension
JodaX
auscompgeek, really cool if you need an extension for that
kbrosnan
being quick on ctrl + w sometimes works as well, not great
JodaX
i suggest adding a button to redirect all alerts to statusbar
auscompgeek
JodaX, it adds a checkbox that allows you to suppress alerts, prompts and inputs
JodaX
auscompgeek, how does it do its job ?
kbrosnan
eh that is fairly unlikely. tab modal or something like alertcheck (what chrome does) seems more likely
JodaX
kbrosnan, chrome and opera add a checkbox to stop scripts
which is not a good option in my opinion
kbrosnan
exactly what alertcheck does from aus's description
auscompgeek
You could use it as a userscript, but Greasemonkey breaks in nightlies.
kbrosnan, it doesn't stop JS entirely.
JodaX
meh
well, ok
but this needs to be a core feature
but i don't think the user should have the ability to kill the js
will result in dumb users killing important stuff
maybe a hotkey would be better for this than a checkbox
hotkey to kill all js
Iszak
Is there any reason why on Firefox 3.6 I can now always see the text caret/pointer?
rjohnson19
Iszak: Did you accidentally turn on Caret Browsing? Try hitting F7.
Iszak
ah
most likely ;)
it was very annoying seeing a flashing caret all the time, thanks.
good to know the shortcut too.
rjohnson19
np :)
Iszak
rjohnson19, perhaps you can answer another question; why do mozilla and other browsers append -moz to properties?
rjohnson19
Oh, that was discussed here a couple days ago.
Iszak
and what was the outcome? :P
rjohnson19
Basically it could be a long time before a final spec appears for those new properties, and they could be drasticaly different.
kbrosnan
use when the spec for a style is not set in stone
Safari and Chrome use webkit- in the same manner
Iszak
yes I know.
But isn't CSS3 finalized?
kbrosnan
no
Iszak
So it's been around for like 7-8 years and it's still a draft? why?
kbrosnan
http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-roadmap/
wait that is out of dait
er date
Iszak
yeah
kbrosnan
http://www.w3.org/Style/CSS/current-work
5 circles of review before the spec is considerd final http://www.w3.org/Style/CSS/current-work#legend
with many sub-steps in each round of review
Iszak
okay but I feel that if it's not even finalized why even include it? what if it gets dropped, it'll mean previous versions of firefox will have these properties which could be considered browser specific, and we all remember marquee and blink don't we?
kbrosnan
because part of the requirement of the spec progressing is to have some implementations. it is better to have a -moz something that works differently then have for example gradient css to depend on the version of Firefox
incase the implementaion finds some akwardness or spots that the spec does not cover
Iszak
but again if there are some awkwardness or spots that the spec doesn't cover these -moz specific properties will be incomplete in the previous versions.
kbrosnan
yes but better than an overloaded 'real' property
Iszak
perhaps but what happens if they drop it and mozilla in say 3.5 has it still implemented?
s/mozilla/firefox
kbrosnan
web parsing in stable releases is not changed lightly, i.e. only in the case of a security patch
Iszak
but you still know what I mean
kbrosnan
the auto updater will get the majority of Firefox users to an updated release with the changes at some point
Iszak
perhaps but we've still got people running around on v2.
and although it may be a better approach than microsofts which basically doesn't have any auto updater feature that I know of, it's still not fool proof.
kbrosnan
either they are willfully usign v2 or stuck on pre Windows 2000
Iszak
I do like how Google Chrome from what I believe has a web installer which means they'll always get the latest version.
kbrosnan, sometimes computers hardware can't compete unfortunently, but the windows 2k is a good point.
sylon
is it just me or does firefox 3.6 autoscroller (middle click) performance sucks compared to 3.5? I get artifacts and slow painting of the webpage underneath as the overlay autoscroll control flies past on top

Once the Java plugin is working, what is the proper way to open a .jar file?
I have noticed that in prefrences->applications that Java archive is set to always ask. Do I change that/
kateweb
the nightly will no longer open
spirov92
hi, I've noticed a bug. When I open firefox and multiple tabs restore, I get lots of password prompts for the master password. Does anyone know why?
btw using 3.5.7 on openSUSE
kateweb
i tryed redownloading the nightly but it still will no longer open
Pe3k
hello, how can I force firefox to open link in new tab of already running firefox? Example: I have running firefox with 4 tabs open. I start 'firefox url.com' and it opens new window with loading of url.com. I would like to have it in fourth tab of existing firefox ...is it possible?
commandline option -new-tab is not working in this way
(I have firefox 3.6)
ooops I meant 'in new fifth tab' in my 1st post :)
Will123456
hey guys. i was wondering: how does firefox handle add-on/plugin functionality? how does it handle communication between the plugins and firefox itself?
kbrosnan
Pe3k: the behavior you want should be the default, have you checked Firefox's safe mode?
Pe3k: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
Pe3k
kbrosnan: it was, but I upgraded to 3.6 and then it changed
kbrosnan
Will123456: through a plugin api, https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Plugins
Quatroking
Hello
Does Firefox 3.6 support html5?
JodaX
HTML5 is still a draft
Quatroking
https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Using_audio_and_video_in_Firefox says it should but it doesn't seem to work for me
JodaX
video works fine here
http://people.xiph.org/~maikmerten/demos/bigbuckbunny-videoonly.html
Quatroking
yep, works
doesn't seem to work with youtube's html5 beta tho
I guess its just something on google's part then
JodaX
that is because youtube doesn't support the html5 spec
it is using h264 for video
Cork[home]
JodaX: thats not correct
html5 doesn't spåecify any codec
*specify
JodaX
it used to
it should do again
Cork[home]
ya, but it was removed
JodaX
they just kinda bowed down to corporate pressure
so what about h264 in firefox ?
Cork[home]
http://theunfocused.net/2010/01/26/on-open-video-and-exclusion/ and http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/roc/archives/2010/01/h264_licensing.html
mozilla can't really support h.264
neatehr can chromium or opera
*neather
i have more links if you want them :D
JodaX
chromium does
Cork[home]
nope
JodaX
well, chrome does
Cork[home]
chrome does
chromium doesn't
JodaX
well, chromium can "shift the blame" and will propably use system ffmpeg libs
Cork[home]
if the system has it ya
JodaX
firefox should too
Cork[home]
but they can't shipp it with it
JodaX
doesn't matter in reality
Cork[home]
JodaX: for compatibility they can't
as those links deskribe why
JodaX
do it like this
ship with stripped down ffmpegs in the official installer, and let package maintainers depend on ffmpeg
