Alan502
Hi, i'm running firefox 3..5.7 on linux. Why could it be that when i click a link that opens a new window firefox shows "Javascript - security error"
cbreak
maybe the link is not a link
but a java script
sdwilsh
one word
JavaScript
both J and S are uppercase
(sorry, pet peeve)
Alan502
:) JavaScript
cbreak, it happens not only with one link, it happens with many
and if i use a different browser i can successfully view that link
cbreak
links don't use JS
they are just an uri in a href
maybe the site author was an idiot.
sdwilsh
it's probably a cross domain issue
Alan502
i don't know why it happens, but it happens with many links
cbreak
right click on them, copy&paste
if it's a real link, that'll work
Alan502
hmmm not really, it happens even with phpbb3
sorry, with vbulletin
for example when i click on the attachment button

rjohnson19
If it happens with many links, I would try Firefox's Safe Mode. http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
Alan502
a new window is supposed to be opened, but it shows "Javascript error"
cbreak
new windows are opened with target="_blank" I think
that should work without any JS
so you could try disabling it
if it doesn't work then, the site author doesn't use links
but some JS code to open the new window
then you have to tell him to debug the code
FF has the ability to block js from opening windows
maybe you have set that setting
Alan502
cbreak, most probably, let me check if i find something
cbreak, apparently i have "Move or resize existing windows" checked
also "Raise or lower windows" and "Disable or replace context menus"
the only thing left unchecked were "Hide status bar" and "Change Status bar text"
"[JavaScript application] - Security Error"
what's interesting is that the window like tries to open but then alerts that
cbreak
well, if in doubt, blame the web page
they shouldn't use js :)
Alan502
but it happens in all vbulletin boards! actually, this doesn't happen in a vm
hmm probably this is a problem with the PS
*Os
nm, but thanks for your help :)
cbreak
insecure configuration
Alan502
in my OS?
cbreak
the one in the VM
if it allows insecure code to open a window
Alan502
but it is not necessarily insecure code, hmmm i don't think vbulletin is that insecure
cbreak
well, you get a security warning :)
Alan502
lol yeah, i just thought i could probably be something with my configuration
(Action) shrugs
cbreak, these pop ups do work on safe mode. Probably its an addon
cbreak, thanks for your help :)
cbreak
probably a security addon
no problem :)
or one that manipulates links
Alan502
cbreak, just to let you know, i found out it was "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications" addon, not sure why though.
thanks again :)
cbreak
hmm... :)
Salva1
Hello. New windows appears behind of Firefox.
Firefox is not set to be "always On Top".
It does not happen with other windows instead of the Firefox one.
I am using Firefox in Linux.
Alan502
Salva1, that sounds like a window manager problem.
Salva1
Is metacity the Window manager in Gnome 2.28?
Alan502
hmmm i think so
Salva1, anyway if you still think firefox is the problem
you can try safe mode
run "firefox -safe-mode"
on the terminal
Salva1
I tested this with Compiz and Mutter and it is at the same state.

Alan502
does the problem persist in safe mode?
Salva1
I will check it.
I will be right in a moment.
*Will be back.
It keeps happpening in that mode too.
Is the most recent 3.5 one.
Here in ubuntu Karmic.
Alan502
nm then, i don't know what it could be... did you ask at #ubuntu?
Salva1
No.
I will try,
there.
Alan502
okay
potatodemon
When do you folks think Firefox will have websockets ?
Are there any betas I can use that have it already working?
CartoonCat
Hellos
my FF on Kubuntu sudenly started saying "firefox can not start, it is already running, please stop it or restart"
well, it most certianly is not running
Alan502
CartoonCat, try ctrl+esc
type firefox and kill the process
CartoonCat
Alan502: ive rebooted sicne then and it doesnt show in a ps aux
and does not show up in crtl esc
neruda_
evening
Alan502
nm then, i cannot think of what could be
perhaps you could try reinstalling
neruda_
is anyone else having problems with FoxIt's FF plugin (pdf reader)?
xangua
:S
CartoonCat
its got to be a pid or a running lock but i looked and can not find any
Alan502: this isnt windows
cbreak
sounds like windows
can you open firefox from a shell?
neruda_
crashes FF whenever I try to open a pdf inside FF
Alan502
CartoonCat, so what, you can try it
CartoonCat
cbreak: no
Alan502
CartoonCat, sudo apt-get purge firefox
CartoonCat
Alan502: thats overkill for a errant pid/lock file
Alan502
sudo apt-get purge firefox-3.5
cbreak
can you open firefox from an other user account?
(with different settings)
CartoonCat
have not tried, only have root and my user
cbreak
hmm. firefox has profiles? maybe you can use those for testing. I forgot how to do that though.
CartoonCat
mm, that mgiht work, but i need my profile to work
nope, didnt work
even making a new profile, it says it is in use
cbreak
then the problem is not part of the profile
CartoonCat
nope its not
cbreak
where else could it be?
CartoonCat
i am 99% sure it is just the .pid or the instance running lock file, but i have no idea where FF puts it, it is not in /var/run/
cbreak
I can't think of a reason why that would prevent you from starting
CartoonCat
and doing a sudo firefox results in the sme
same*
cbreak
chances that firefox gets the same pid the next time so that the lockfile triggers are slim
xangua
CartoonCat: don't use sudo, use gksu
CartoonCat
well, im guessing its like other apps, and use's the pid/ril file to see if it is runnng, and for what ever reason it did not release it last time i closed
xangua
or kdesudo in kde
CartoonCat
xangua: i shall try that
cbreak
must be a linuxism
but even if it finds a pid, it will find out that no firefox runs with that pid as soon as it looks at the processes
CartoonCat
ok that worked xangua
cbreak: well, i dunno, its all that comes to mind
erm, wait, idea
well nope, my users owns everything correctly
so, im at a loss, is there a way to do debug info to console?
FireCrotch
How can I set the connection timeout setting in 3.6 ?
CartoonCat
Anyone have some ideas about this FF is running when its not issue ??
treesapsatchel
what's the boolean value i can create in about:config to not check for plugin compatibility?
for version
i just installed 3.6, if i want to go back to 3.5.7 can i just reinstall 3.5.7 and it will overwrite it?
has gmail manage rstopped working for anyone else since google introduced Buzz?
cbreak
why not just install both if you want both?
treesapsatchel
in terms of tooltip popups
i don't want both
n i odn't want to reinstall all my extensions
cbreak
I didn't reinstall any extension
they all worked with 3.6
(besides those that didn't work since 3.0)
CartoonCat
ok this is fun
i totaly removed my profiles and profile.ini, and now FF works
so i imported the files listed to move my bookmarks and passwords into the new profile, and they do not show up
auscompgeek
Try importing a backup for the bookmarks.
For the passwords, you did copy over key3.db and signons.sqlite?
CartoonCat
yup
and i figured out the issue getting the "ff is running but not responding" crap
<folder not found!>
IDK WTH happen to cause my original profile to go poof, but thats all i can come up with.
ive got my backup profile (i save it weekly)
ok, now its REALLY a WTH
fx9zjjme.default.bk = master, fx9zjjme.default = backup!
and fx9zjjme.default = MIA
mm, is it me, or is that a bug (profile missing = FF in use error)
bhungy
is addons.mozilla.org broken ? When I try to install an addon, I get a grey screen (?) with a message saying "to install xyz addon get firefox, a free and open web browser from Mozilla" ?
and a green "Learn More" button
which takes me to the firefox download page.
kbrosnan
works as expected for me, just installed firebug
Cork
bhungy: what does http://www.whatsmyuseragent.com say?
Your User Agent: ?
bhungy
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115
Cork
the next line too
bhungy
Cork: yes thats it
Cork
then you have a broken useragent
bhungy
Cork: there's no next line
Cork
bhungy: goto about:config search for useragent
bhungy
the other profile says: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6
So addons.mozilla.org searches for the "Firefox/3.6" string ?
Cork
bhungy: in your address bar type "about:config"
bhungy
Cork: I've modified it to remove the firefox version
Cork
you 've removed firefox completly
that will break addons, and alot of other pages too
bhungy
is that unreasonable ?
Peng
bhungy: What's the point of removing the Firefox version? It's trivial to guess from the Gecko version anyway.
Cork
(Action) nods
Peng
And the Gecko build date.
bhungy
ok, I'll put "Firefox" back and try again
You can't change that can you ? (the Gecko part)
Peng
You can override the entire user-agent in one fell swoop.
bhungy
:( it checks the version too. Firefox/1.0 doesn't work either.
but then I shouldn't expect addons to work for me.
Cork
bhungy: of cource, cause firefox/1.0 isn't supported by addons eather
bhungy: just reset your useragent and it should work just fine
auscompgeek
Why would you do that anyway?
kbrosnan
firefox 1.0 is extremely unique. really if you want to be semi anon, sticking with the current release ua would be the best bet
auscompgeek
There was no Firefox 1.0 iirc
kbrosnan
sure there was
auscompgeek
really?
bhungy
Cork: yes, I'm just trying to find a way to play nice with addons.moz.org while also obfuscating my browser version.
(Firefox/4.0) doesn't work either
Cork: how do I reset the value ?
auscompgeek
I thought it started with 1.5&
Cork
bhungy: right click the line and select reset
auscompgeek
bhungy, right-click the pref
Cork is too fast.
