mzz
does someone here have logs that show why the ban on *!*a@*.dsl.bell.ca was set?
(it's catching TestPilot, and I don't think that was intentional)
dolske
mzz: fixed. tbh I'm not sure where most of these bans came from, I can't remember the last time someone was banned in here.
mzz
dolske: wonder if it was some kind of glitch from the migration to ircd-seven earlier (although if it was I'd expect it to affect more channels, so there would've been complaints)
dolske
gavin_ / [reed]: any objection to just clearing out the ban list?
Patero-ng
I want info on chinese caracter support for firefox
how to?
Quatroking
hi
I don't like the new way of tab sorting in FF 3.6, is it possible to change it back to the way FF3.5 did?
Peng
Quatroking: Yeah, there's a pref in about:config. Don't remember the name off-hand, though. browser.tabs.* IIRC.
Quatroking: If you mean how new tabs are opened next to the previous one.
Quatroking
Yeah
for example, I have four tabs: [1][2][3][4] and open a new one while viewing tab two. It currently makes [1][2][5][3][4] instead of [1][2][3][4][5]
Peng
Right.

jruderman
try browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent
Quatroking
restart after setting it to false, right?
oh, its not even needed
works perfect
Thanks!
Patero-ng
how is 3.6 dif from 3.5 in tabs handleing?
you mean you can't drag and dropt
jruderman
Patero-ng: display of chinese characters should just work. what web site are you having trouble with, and on what operating system?
Patero-ng
backtrack 3
the site is http://www.gatherway.com/cn/index.asp
even the title bar look like squares
kbrosnan
page is slow to load here
Patero-ng
is slow yea
took 25sec to do
jruderman
i'm guessing you just don't have any fonts with chinese characters in them
kbrosnan
dolske: gavin_ [reed] clearing +b seems reasonable to me
Patero-ng
how to fix?
I'm on linux
kbrosnan
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Multilingual_support_%28East_Asian%29
see section 2.*
Peng
kbrosnan: What, this channels +b?
kbrosnan
yeah
Peng
Shrug. Probably. It might be good to grep logs to see what they're about, but I'm certainly not going to do the leg-work. :P
*!*chatzill@*.dyn.centurytel.net -- yikes, that's general.
kbrosnan
a lot of work for something that is easy to +b again if someone is stupid
Peng
Anyway, I'm +0.5 on clearing it. Like I said, I'd prefer if someone checked to see if any of the bans are still worthwhile, but it's not worth it.
Patero-ng
is so complicated
I'm out
kbrosnan
though i have a list of 09-10 bans
syrius
when extracting and moving addons to extensions folder does the root folder have to be {er0434-34543-3453} or can I name it like "adblock-plus" ?
Peng
syrius: I don't know if renaming it would work, but please don't.

mzz
a few might be valid, a few seem to overlap
syrius
I am making an automation script
kbrosnan
it will depend on what is specified in the install script
Peng
I'm definitely +1 on removing the most general ones.
mzz
syrius: I'm pretty sure there are explosions if the name doesn't match the id in install.rdf
syrius: I forgot exactly what kind
syrius
I want to install addons without gui configuration so it is silent
I do not want it installed globally
only for select profiles
cool thanks for the info Peng
does the number change when it gets updates?
so it will always be that name for firefox?
cool
okay going to add that to the auto installation script
I guess I will use this name for the auto installation for the root folder {d10d0bf8-f5b5-c8b4-a8b2-2b9879e08c5d}
so hope it works
Peng
syrius: Extensions' IDs do not change. It may be possible -- I don't know -- but it's certainly not a common occurance.
syrius: It's like a website changing its domain name.
syrius
yes I know like dynamic to static ip
for website
dns problems occur when you have that
dynamic
okay cool
so now I know how to auto install addons
Peng
Its a shame, because more recent Firefox versions allow email address-style add-on IDs, but many extensions predate that, so they're stuck with GUIDs.
syrius
yes I see that
in my extensions folder
I thought it was because it was how the theme addons are named
is what I assumed
well I am happy that wget can find the ixp file from the url
mzz
extensions changing id can't really be done (there's also not much of a reason to since end users don't see the ids
syrius
so it can download it from the script
yes I I thought of that too mzz
but I didn't use the term end user
average user is what I thought
same thing
konr
How can I get the flash plugin to use oss?
kbrosnan
might be some sort of alsa > oss tool, other than that beg adobe for oss support
mzz
heh, the reverse was common in the past (begging adobe for alsa support)
Trizicus
Long time firefox user and I feel like hacking it; where do I start?
jruderman
Trizicus: http://www.mozilla.org/contribute/
EntityReborn
looking for the name of an extension that grabs videos and stuff off the net. Most notable feature was it had an extensive list of sites, built in, that also included adult content sites
kbrosnan
i would guess video downloader, but i've never used such an extension
EntityReborn
ah, "Flash Video DOwnloader" it was
JoeSomebody
hi all, is adobe pdf reader within firefox a bad /unsafe idea? is there a safer alternative?
i read something somewhere that some consider it unsafe
can't tell you why though, so i am asking you :)
rjohnson19
Adobe Reader does have a pretty poor security record.
I use Sumatra PDF, personally. If you need more features, you can also give Foxit Reader a shot.
JoeSomebody
cool, thanks for the tips
are Sumatra PDF or Foxit Reader free license?
rjohnson19
Yep, both free.
JoeSomebody
sweet :)
andrew[andrboot]
Hi guys :) so, kinda realised that making msi's to deploy was a bad idea.. who knows how to install via cmd :)
silently :p
oh fail
i should google harder
Rya2
I am migrating a family member to a new computer, is there a way I can transfer firefox's remembered logins, that are most likely stored in a cookie somewhere? they have forgotten their errm facebook password. yes I could reset it except the mail server blocks facebook
Gh3rssp
[reed]: spambots?
hmmmm
hello, guys, does anyone know if 3.5 will work on freebsd 7.2?
[reed]
Gh3rssp: just clearing the banlist
Gh3rssp
ah
hmmmm
it doesn't seem to be available from the 7.2 package repository, but i can still build it from ports
kbrosnan
Rya2: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information
Rya2
thx, yeah tried that, perhaps the cookiescontaining the remembered logins (not the password manager) can't be transferred?
kbrosnan
should work, just can't replace the file while firefox is runing
hmmmm
hey guys, where are the userstyles for stylish stored?
auscompgeek
stylish.sqlite
hmmmm
erm :\
directory
auscompgeek
in the Firefox profile
hmmmm
where is the firefox profile on freebsd 7.2?
auscompgeek
On Linux, usually a directory under ~/.mozilla/firefox/
hmmmm
this userstyle i installed keeps making firefox go crazy and i can't do anything until i ctrl+alt+backspace
auscompgeek
Then don't install it.
hmmmm
:/
still, i don't think a plugin should be able to do that..
it's kind of difficult to uninstall it too
aha yup, it's in ~/.mozilla/firefox/7ezxaabj.default
thanks
auscompgeek
np
mydog2
hey...
hmmmm
hello
mydog2
i try to type garbage in the address bar... and it goes to google's search...
using ff 3...
anyway to stop this..
hmmmm
hmmmm probably not
if firefox has a google toolbar to pay homage to google
then i bet the automatic search thing isn't optional either
...or are you using google dns?
mydog2
hmmmm - nope...
hmmmm
ah
mydog2
and never really noticed this until today..
hmmmm
hey guys, how hard would it be to get a mac osx addon for firefox to work on freebsd 7.2?
(specifically cooliris)
mydog2
if i screw up typing something in the address bat.. i would expect ff to simply not find it..
hmmmm
i'm not exactly a firefox guru, so i'm sorry i can't help
mydog2
i don't need to be directed to googles/prefernece..
hmmmm
it might be an option, beats me... somewhere in the maze of about:config
chovy
dang it...firefox will get killed because it won't support mp3 or H.264 (I totally agree with what they are doing in not supporting those formats, but the web will continue to move on.
people will simply use a browser that supports whatever format the site they are on is using.
kbrosnan
mydog2: if it is urlish then firefox attempts to look it up as an url, lfewlewjaewfwenef.com however fsdfewwef will trigger a google keyword search. the later can be disabled using keyword.enabled
if for some reason the first part is not happening as i said then there is a good chance your isp has a dns redirect scheme
mydog2
kbrosnan - just found it! but thanks..
kbrosnan
chovy: for now the spec does not require a specific codec. as long as that is true firefox will advance an open codec. <video> allows for fallback to <object> based plugins. the amount of html5 video on the net currently is tiny, currently Firefox, chrome and opera support theora, safari and chrome do h.264
jruderman
chovy: the main reason sites are serving h.264 for <video> is that they already already serve h.264 for Flash
chovy: it's not clear that "the web will continue to move on" means moving toward h.264 <video>, as opposed to moving to other codecs
speaking of which, wasn't the MPEG-LA supposed to announce its 2011 terms (especially for free internet 'broadcasts' of h.264 video) by the end of january 2010, in other words today?
chovy
jruderman: not sure what happened with MPEG-LA
I'm just making a point, that nobody uses .ogg
everything is mp3, regardless of licensing.
jruderman
hmm, mp3 may be a different story than h.264
kbrosnan
wikipedia is all ogg, http://openvideo.dailymotion.com/ tinyvid.tv
jruderman
makes me <3 wikipedia even more
auscompgeek
:D
jruderman
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3#Licensing_and_patent_issues crazy
auscompgeek
is it always this empty? :P
jruderman
the firefox-related channels on irc.mozilla.org tend to be more active
auscompgeek
I see that Jesse (assuming it's you) :P
xangua
jum...
auscompgeek
hm?
jruderman
yes, i'm Jesse on irc.mozilla.org
auscompgeek
I thought so.
sebi_`
hi, how do i disable these "XML not well formed" error pages?
jruderman
sebi_`: where are you seeing them?
sebi_`
basically at any site with not wellformed xml
and every time i experience such an error, i'm forced to use a different browser to visit the site... chrome/chromium for example :P
jruderman
sebi_`: the XML spec requires that behavior, pretty much, and doesn't specify a standard recovery algorithm
Cork
sebi_`: only way would be to overide the mime type to ex. text or text/html
sebi_`
good for the specification, bad for the user, eh? :P
Cork
as if its not valid xml the parser can't deal with it
sebi_`: thats actaully one of the fetures of xml :)
so yes its good
jruderman
sebi_`: experience with XML led to new specs (like CSS and HTML5) specifying both what is valid input and exactly what software should do with invalid input
sebi_`
well, firefox treats any data as xml, if the header "Content-Type" is set to text/xml
jruderman
sebi_`: what's an example of a page chromium treats differently than firefox? now i'm curious
Cork
(by beeing scrict on parsing, the parsers can be alot simpler, so you can use it on slim clients (like mobiles and such)
sebi_`
Cork: i'm not sure if i can agree, since that feature makes visiting websites with xml errors impossible
Cork
scrict==strict
sebi_`: thats the sites problem
they should validate there code, if they use xml
jruderman
sebi_`: it also reduces the number of sites with xml errors ;)
sebi_`
jruderman: chromium reports them in the error console
jruderman
this is just well-formedness, not validity, not asking that much
sebi_`
jruderman: it also reduces the sites i'm able to visit
Cork
sebi_`: load it through here: http://www.lri.fr/~mdr/xml/?res=1&larg=1680&haut=1050
jruderman
with google chrome 4.0.249.49 (35163) beta, i get "Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error."
Cork
or similar correctors
sebi_`
Cork: frankly, i don't know how this is supposed to help? i'm talking about a website, not a file
jruderman
sebi_`: again, i'd like to see a real-world example. maybe chrome is doing something reasonable that firefox can also do with violating the XML spec.
sebi_`
jruderman: http://cid-62951fb2da1b32ae.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Linux%20Layouts?ct=photos
Cork
sebi_`: if the site is served as broken application/xhtml+xml or just application/xml then overide the header to text/html
sebi_`
jruderman: this is the site i'm trying to visit
Cork
sebi_`: as it shouldn't be that in the first place if its broken
sebi_`
Cork: and of course that works without any addons i take it?
