Samus_Aran
pk_: I'm not a C or C++ programmer, unfortunately, but if I was it still wouldn't be accepted. I've heard the developers defending the broken practises again and again for a decade
Peng
Samus_Aran: Seriously, could you give me a link to the bug?
Samus_Aran
pk_: since the people linked the RFCs, the Firefox devs merely stopped talking about it at all
Peng
I've tried searching for it a bit, but I'm not interested enough to keep trying.
Samus_Aran
Peng: there's about a dozen of them, almost all closed (even though they're not fixed), with at least two remaining open due their undeniable logic. will go check my e-mails for the links
Peng
Thanks. :)
[reed]
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=115174 says that's WFM
Samus_Aran: ^
so, what bug are you referring to?
Peng
Samus_Aran
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=115174
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=120809
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=166786
those are the three I seem to be subscribed to
they mention the RFC violations

[reed]
115174 is WFM
Samus_Aran
what's WFM ?
Peng
Works For Me
Sadly, that acronym hasn't spread much outside the Mozilla community. :(
Samus_Aran
WTF is retarded. it doesn't work.
*WFM
lol
but that was my point, there are dozens of closed reports on this topic for the last decade. it has never been fixed
the devs are insane to close them when it has never been fixed
it is a critical usability issue
and it is a spec violation
[reed]
I don't see "dozens" of reports
Samus_Aran: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=115174#c119
please follow those directions
and provide the bug # here
Samus_Aran
[reed]: I hunted for about 8 hours straight. I found a minimum of one dozen bug reports on the issue. most were not open
[reed]: the three most relevant ones I subscribed to, the ones above.
they are all assigned to nobody. no dev will ever work on it. what is that about ?
they've been around for a decade now
[reed]
120809 and 166786 are unrelated to "save page as"
and 115174 is WFM, as I mentioned above
so, please take the time to follow bz's request in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=115174#c119
and file a new bug
provide everything he asks for
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=479296 seems more like the issue you're seeing, though
the page may have expired from your local cache
Samus_Aran
[reed]: one of the three I pasted is still open: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=166786
[reed]
[05:17:10] <[reed]> 120809 and 166786 are unrelated to "save page as"
Samus_Aran
how is it not related ?
"Can't save / view source POST query (e.g. ebay auction)"
[reed]
because that bug is talking about view source
and some random frame saving
the summary is just worded badly
Samus_Aran
View Source is the same issue. it refetches it instead of displaying a cached copy of the actual file. it stores DOM Trees or some other bullsh*t instead of caching real files
[reed]
it's not the same code path, though, and therefore, it would be a separate bug
Samus_Aran
Back, Forward, Save, View Source, Maximise Frame, etc. all refetch instead of using the existing file
[reed]
that's wrong
I know that's wrong
because I can easily back and forward without hitting cache
er
using cache*&
how large is your cache?
are you sure you're not just expiring stuff from your cache?
Samus_Aran
Firefox doesn't cache real files, it uses DOM trees or something. it also affects HTTPS files differently, as it refuses to save those to disk ever so Back/Forward on http sites always refetches
[reed]
also wrong
Samus_Aran
if you're viewing a file and save it, it should never open an Internet connection
not wrong for me
[reed]
we changed that in the last release or two
3.0, maybe?
[05:24:40] <Samus_Aran> if you're viewing a file and save it, it should never open an Internet connection
if the site expired from the cache, it will have to
Samus_Aran
what part of "never" do you not get ?

[reed]
you can't have an unlimited cache
Samus_Aran
you're VIEWING the file
it's in RAM
the problem is Firefox's braindead prerendered file crap
it saves that to RAM rather than the actual files, as everyone expects a browser to do
[reed]
uh, no, "everyone" does not expect a browser to save files in that way
there's nothing that says we have to do that
Samus_Aran
if you have a page with 40 images on it, and save as with images, it redownloads all 40 images
yes, they do
[reed]
no, they don't
Samus_Aran
find me a user who right-clicks an image and goes SAVE AS who does not expect it to save the damn image they're looking at, but to go download several megabytes from the net
you will find none
only to find the image on the net no longer exists
or their wireless is out of range
and they're demoted to taking crappy screenshots to save their images
same for all dynamic images, of which there are now millions on the Internet
saving those images in Firefox gives you a DIFFERENT image
no users expect or accept that stupid behaviour
or say you try to save the google.com page that has a neat logo on it, but that was a few hours ago, now when you save it you get the normal logo. etc.
Firefox is broken
Peng
Well, that's the end of that.
[reed]
waste of time
Peng
I got distracted a couple minutes ago.
[reed]
lol, he's whining in PM now
Peng
I really am too nice.
[reed]
;)
Peng
pk_, Kai_: Sorry you got drowned out, but I didn't have an answer for you anyway...
kiuma
hello
I've set network.protocol-handler.app.ed2k and network.protocol-handler.external.ed2k. Why FF3.5 continues to say that protocol ed2k is not recognized ?
kevindanko
is there an easy way to remove -moz-background properties from Firebug?

Peng
Laurenceb: ISTM the file for one of your search plugins does not exist.

hello,
is there any chance to find some examples on automatic configuration of user places with a general.config.filename? (hope I'm clear enought ;-))

frostburn
is there a way to move a tab left or right using only quick keys? maybe a plugin?
kbrosnan
ctrl + page up/down
er thats not it, ctrl + arrow keys on firefox 3
however does not work on 3.5 or later since they removed the actual tab from getting focus
frostburn
kbrosnan, sorry, should have been more specific, e.g. i have 3 tabs open, i want to move tab 1 to position 3, while moving tab 2 to 1 and tab 3 to 2
