is there a plugin that you can use to check your website in various internet speeds?
like load it in dial-up, 1mb, etc
auscompgeek
I don't think a *plugin* could do that, as plugins can't control the browser...

hi
i http://www.360innovate.co.uk/blog/periodical/ this page does ajax requests via jquery, it works. but if i copy the index file, and the two jquery scripts and change the jquery periodicalupdater url it doesnt send any request out according to firebug....as if the script isnt even started?
ah great, got an error message. "cross domain scripting is not allowed" finally - you cant let your script collect data from another domain...how clever
peeps
when i download a pdf from firefox, and I try to view it by double clicking it in the downloads window, it loads it in GIMP. how do I change this?
i'm on linux/gnome and if i load a pdf from nautilus instead, it defaults to using evince, which is what i want.
auscompgeek
Edit => Preferences => Applications (or something similar?)
peeps
auscompgeek, under that menu it shows Gimp as the default, but I don't see any way to change that as the default
auscompgeek
click on it?

Hi, I tried to download the Adobe reader plugin here on Ubuntu. I got a 40 MB bin file I have no idea what to do with. Doesn't seem to be an option in FireFox to do anything at all with it.
Terminal doesn't know what to do with it. I have no idea what it is.
Adobe seems to think it should just run, the "documentation" from the Mozilla page recommends I install it, which is remarkably useless.

hi

matsuura
hey, everytime I open thunderbird, it says it's already open
even after restarting
what gives?
Accesshater
check your taskmanager
maybe there is a process running in the background of thunderbird
matsuura
nope
linux bt
btw *
xangua
matsuura: try to run it from terminal, to see if there is an error message
maybe the #thunderbird channel in irc.mozilla.org would be more helpful
matsuura
xangua: probably

why is it that some sites can sneak popups past the popup blocker?
how can i enable the popup blocker to absolutely forbid a new firefox window/tab from opening
btw, my Exceptions list IS empty.
Peng
They're clever. It doesn't block everything.
Raccoon
um.
void NewWindow(x) { block_popup_check(x) }
i'm sure it's something that can be fixed.
I know Firefox likes to make exceptions for when the user physically clicks a link
I'd like a checkbox to disable that
Beefcakes
can't i set firefox to do bookmarking like IE? with favorites as actual file hyperlinks?
Raccoon
Beefcakes, no, but there's probably a plugin to export your bookmarks as .url files
Is it possible to rename firefox.exe without breaking things?
Psinetic
i'm on facebook with firefox, and everytime i open chat or do anything in it, it freezes and crashes the browser. it keeps doing this with any site that uses java
anyone?
{g}
Hey People! In top, I see Firefox using "787m" of "VIRT" and "592m" of "RES". Is that hard disk and ram memory usage? If so, how can it consume such amounts of mem while the stuff im browsing is probably less then 10m?
Psinetic
i guess people just don't respond in this chat
Peng
That's why the topic recommends going to irc.mozilla.org.
Accesshater
Psinetic i would respond if i knew what to do about it
and yeah most of the folks here are idling
Psinetic
someone told me before, something to do with about:config
Zaquatronic
hey everyone
what are the most essential add ons for firefox?
Accesshater
adblock plus
firebug if you are a webdeveloper
Psinetic
noscript
ghostery
wot
Accesshater
flashblock

Zaquatronic
Ive got adblock plus firebug noscript and wot
what's ghostery and flashblock all about?
Accesshater
flashblock blocks all flash elements
and you can enable the flash elements by clicking on them
you can also add exceptions for it
Zaquatronic
cool
Accesshater
ow yeah Zaquatronic you should also take a look at the tree style tab addon
:)
prinzdezibel
Hi there. I'd expect that a "debugger;" statement in my javascript code launches firebug debugger. But that's not the case. Any hints?
Peng
Maybe it has to be debugger()?
:D
(Action) doesn't have any idea
prinzdezibel
unfortenately not.
Raccoon
i discovered that 580 mb of the 700 mb firefox uses, is due to the built-in TOR network webserver that hosts pages for north koreans and chinese
Peng
The who what?
Raccoon
its the only explanation why such a scrappy browser would use so many resources
Peng
It's really not.
Raccoon
you know, 700 mb is enough space to store over 50 semi popular websites
not sure why 1 tab would soak so much ram
(Action) willing to bet 700mb accounted for all the "internet content" available 15 years ago.
Peng
I doubt it.
Usenet? FTP? No way.
<whine>Why do people always act like a web browser is nothing but a copy of a web page? There's history, bookmarks, cookies, all your random extensions, Safe Browsing, the UI, and web pages have a DOM, and images have to be uncompressed, and (ugh) plugins....</whine>
Not that your experience is acceptable, just sayin'.
monokrome
hey
Does anyone here know of an extensions that can be used to automatically organize your downloaded files based on filenames/extensions? :)
yoritomo
hello everybody
monokrome
hi
yoritomo
i experience a very annoying problem with firefow 3.5.6 with some internet pages, the processor is going to be 100% used , this one for exemple "
monokrome
Under which operating system?
yoritomo
anyone got the same problem ? and is it due to ? it is doing that on some pages using form or checkable choice usually
ubuntu karmic koala 64
up to date
monokrome
I've had the issue in Ubuntu Jaunty when I go to pages with large portions of Javascript
GMail is one
yoritomo
is it a way to resolv it ? to use another plugin version or similar ?
cryton
monokrome https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/25
monokrome
Awesome! Thank you, cryton :)
cryton
np
monokrome
yoritomo: I removed all of my plugins to test if it was Firefox or a plugin, and it was Firefox. I don't know of any way to resolve it.
As you might be running into a different issue, you may want to disable all of your plugins as a test.
yoritomo
then did you downgrade version ?
monokrome
No, yoritomo. I actually was using Google Chrome for a few days. However, I reinstalled my OS today and Firefox is working great - so I am back to Firefox again.
yoritomo
google chrome, is it a free OS ?
monokrome
No, it's a browser.
But Firefox is more developed.
Accesshater
more developed or not it is still better than internet exploder
monokrome
True
And I like it a bit more for development.
yoritomo
i get on another computer, laptop equiped with karmic koala 32, often firefox going grey then freezing, and some time comes back alive sometime needs to kill :( what can happens ?
is due to the same problem ?
monokrome
yoritomo: That is what mine did. Try disabling your plugins, and see it that fixes it. If that doesn't fix it, you'll either have to deal with the issue or try another browser.
yoritomo
yes by arora everything is fine
but it is annoying to switch to Arora, for so little thing
monokrome
right.
yoritomo
looks like it is coming from flash
monokrome
ooh I've had that issue
You can run: pkill -9 npviewer.bin
and it will stop flash and fix firefox
yoritomo
but no more flash after ?
monokrome
flash will be killed
and then when you refresh, it will come back
yoritomo
monokrome strange, i typed the command in console nothing happening
and when i install flashblock looks like not working neither
the flash image working and it has no play symbol
monokrome
yoritomo: Maybe it's: pkill -9 npview
npviewer*
yoritomo
killall npviewer.bin but it says could not find npviewer
looks like it is another plugin
no luck it has no flash on that page
e-cat
hi
monokrome
yo

one of the plugins, probably Foxdie, apparently changed the way url-bar (and other textboxes on the toolbar) behave: now when i select text, only text color changes, instead of usual reverse-color selection block... any ideas on how to fix that?
(besides the obvious "remove foxdie" idea :)
it doesn't affect, say, F3 search textbox
i tried editing userChrome.css, and managed to change the regular (non-selected) color to red (just to see if i can reach that attribute)... but i couldn't affect the selection colors
neither ::selection nor ::-moz-selection worked
Accesshater
e-cat: http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html
try userContent.css
e-cat
Accesshater, but is this content? i thought toolbars were chrome?
Accesshater
ow my bad then. i yhought you wanted to change something about the form fields
e-cat
no, only the toolbar fields: search, url, and google search box
RenatoSilva
ctrl+enter completes .com, right? How to change this?
km
for some reasons i can connect surf the internet via firefox but ie work fine. any ideas?
kevindanko
is there a way to hide the -moz-background code?
like if i am in firebug is there to automatically remove that line?
i.e. -moz-background-clip
e-cat
Accesshater: ok, figured it out. Foxdie changed #main-window #nav-bar background-color to a somewhat darkish shade, but used white background image... as a result, selection color switched to white, and became white-on-white
still, the fact that -moz-selection didn't work might be a bug
scwizard
if I go to a site such as this one: http://umineco.info/?MusicBox%28%E5%87%BA%E9%A1%8C%E7%B7%A8%29
then I click on the address bar, and press enter, I get a different (invalid) page
also if I were to save that site in my favorites, and then try to access it by typing part of it into the address bar, and then selecting it, it would go to the wiki entry doesn't exist page instead of the right page
but if I were to save it to my bookmarks menu, and access it from there, it would go to the proper place
this seems to be a bug of some sort

hi today I cannot use my certificates from the Linux FF 3.5.6 I just don't get the popup to ask me which certificate to use for authentification. I get some weird error like unable to authentificate ..contact site owner. Thing is this happens on more than two websites so I belive issue is on my side. Certificates are listed there..they are not expired. This browser I use only and only for payment thingies. On each exist every history/cache
etc is cleared.
it's first attempt this year so I'm thinking might be weird year joke or something :)
any pointers?
