kbrosnan: does that mean "you don't?"
kbrosnan: also from what i was reading, mailcap support was dropped (i don't know if it meant from kde or from firefox)
... whatever mailcap is.
kbrosnan

short of installing/configuring gnome, i guess not

could anyone possibly answer a font size question? when setting to x pixels, which of these bounds are stretched to x pixels? http://www.whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/images/baselines.png , is it the top and bottom of em square?

Hello - I'm developing an embedded webserver (from socket level) and it's pretty much HTTP/1.1 complete, but for some reason pages from it load incredibly fast in opera, and incredibly slow in firefox
What could firefox be doing differently that I need to cater for?
(they load very quickly in IE, too)
elliotc
hi does anyone here use privoxy?

jgarbers
using firefox 3.6 on OS X, doing Ajax requests via Prototype. i'm asking on prototype now, and nobody seems to know& is there a reason why Firefox is using the OPTIONS method instead of GET or POST?
i've specified 'get' to prototype, and safari uses 'get', but ff uses OPTIONS for some reason...
M06w
what is the point of keywords and tags on bookmarks?
jruderman
M06w: shortcuts to reach them. e.g. if you have twitter.com bookmarked with the keyword "t", you can reach it by typing "t" in the address bar and pressing enter.
M06w
really now
what if I want it to show up in the dropdown results
jruderman
modifying the title or tags is probably the best way to do that
but i'm not sure, you'd have to experiment
the dropdown results also learn as you use them
MikeJB
Does the mobile version of Firefox have Adblock or some equivilent? It's even more important with limited screen space and bandwith.
M06w
yea, but I've been having shizzly luck with long term computing environments as of late, so I'd like to set it expressly
MikeJB
Please note that I'm not evil for using Adblock. I maintain a long whitelist: if I like your site and it has unintrusive ads, I'll probably have the ads visible. On Google, ads are actually useful.
M06w
Firefox mobile?! What is this witchcraft you speak of
MikeJB
Fennec?
M06w
but google ads on other sites just look lame
jruderman
MikeJB: yes, adblock plus is available for fennec. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/mobile/addon/1865
MikeJB
Omg, omg, omg, omg, omg...
M06w
you just came
MikeJB
You see, other browsers might be technically better or faster or whatever else, but every time I try to use one, I'll do fine until about 30 min later when I come across a hideous ad-laden website.
And then I flee back to Firefox.
M06w
adblock hasn't started supporting other browsers?
jruderman
weird that you have to look in two different places to find firefox addons and fennec addons -- https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/mobile/addons/versions/1865 vs https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/1865
even if it's the same addon
MikeJB
afaik, other browsers have add-blocking extensions but not the Adblock we know and love
*ad-blcoking
*ad-blocking
and they're not as good, since they just hide the ads after they load and thus don't give any performance improvement.
M06w
plus if the ad actually loads it has the chance to fight back
MikeJB
In other words, who gives a damn if your browser is .3 seconds faster if it spends 8 seconds loading crappy ads?

M06w
I don't browse without adblock and noscript
it'd be like screwing a hooker that you know has aids without a condom
MikeJB
The web is a much cleaner place if I just do adblock + whitelist.
If a website needs ads to function somehow (it's happened before), or if ads are a core part (Google), I'll whitelist it.
So is Firefox coming to Android? And does Firefox have multitouch?
I really shudder at the thought of loading lots of ads over 3G
M06w
if the site needs the ads to function, I don't need the site to function
MikeJB
Anyway, Adblock plus is my "killer app" that keeps me tied to Firefox.
I've yet to see a browser compelling enough to make up for the lack of my favorite add-on.
Anyway, when might I expect the awesomeness that is Adblock on a smartphone?
Oh, Firefox too. ;)

I have a problem setting up the spellchecking for any other language than english, though i have installed a plugin for french checking. Is spell checking related to the preference setting of preferred language display?
i don't see any other option, even to turn off spell checking
well at least i found, where i can turn it of
so there maybe a plugin which again allows for spellchecking other languages than english
so i have installed this french dictionary at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:3
but still it has no effect
how do i activate it?
Gh3rssp
locale switcher
PrototypeX29A
like switching the keyboard layout?
or log out and log in again?
i just want to switch the languge
Gh3rssp
the addon
PrototypeX29A
what the addon?
Gh3rssp
quick locale switcher
PrototypeX29A
verb?
Gh3rssp
no, addon
PrototypeX29A
you mean there is a addon called locale switcher, which i need to install?
Gh3rssp
yes...
PrototypeX29A
thanks
so, how do i switch
still i have red lines under my french words
seems i have to restart firefox to have an effect
AND it still does not work
Gh3rssp
you have to restart it to install, yes
PrototypeX29A
i still have no french spell checking
Gh3rssp
did you install the french dictonary?
PrototypeX29A
i don't see a difference at all, except that little french flag
yes i did
Gh3rssp
i dont know
what client are you using?
(IRC)
PrototypeX29A
irssi
Gh3rssp
oh
PrototypeX29A
but i am talking about firefox
Gh3rssp
i know
lots of people use chatzilla
and restart one window
not the whole browser
PrototypeX29A
i don't see any usability in having to shutdown the whole browser just to write another language
Gh3rssp
I only use one language, i dont know
xangua
PrototypeX29A: right clic in a text box> select french dictionary
PrototypeX29A
this may help
xangua
i don't use chatzilla so i don't know if it will work there
PrototypeX29A
i don't use chatzilla either
it works, thanks
xangua
oh then who was using it¿¿ i got lost :S
PrototypeX29A
no i was talking about spellchecking in firefox
Gh3rssp: assumed that i use chatzilla
but i am not that nuts
Gh3rssp
(Auto tab complete fail)
PrototypeX29A
that wasn't even auto :)
Gh3rssp
haha
so you just always put colons?
PrototypeX29A
ok, i spent about 2 hours searching merely a right-click
i hate guis, i really do
Gh3rssp yes
Gh3rssp
heh
PrototypeX29A: don't feel dumb.., I've spent days trying to figure out how to restart nagios, turns out it was just clicking "Restart nagios"
PrototypeX29A
hehe
KiRiLoS
Hello people
Gh3rssp
Hi
KiRiLoS
I am using Firefox 3.6 under OpenSuSE 11.2.The thing is that it takes like 20 seconds to launch.I had the same issue since the initial OS install with firefox 3.5.Any ideas?

Is there a way I can become part of the FireFox community?
Gh3rssp
Yep
xangua
spread firefox :)
jruderman
hanging out on irc is a good first step ;)
Gh3rssp
Sumo, sfx, traiges, qa
the good people start by just lurking ;)
jruderman
http://www.mozilla.org/contribute/ mentions a bunch of ways you can help improve and spread firefox
Gh3rssp
[reed]: ! You're at the top of the list now
[reed]
I would make a joke, but it would be highly inappropriate for your age.
so, I will restrain myself
jruderman
because his nick starts with "["
Gh3rssp
haha
PrototypeX29A
to be part of a software related irc community you should learn how to flame, and when to say "RTFM"
saying RTFM a lot lets people know, that you know stuff, then they like you
Gh3rssp
hm
not here
PrototypeX29A
i was applying a dash of irony
i noticed this behaviour a lot in some channels :)
i don't they which as i don't want to badmouth debian
i don't say

hey all, does anyone know of any way to prevent the visual bugs that occur in firefox when one uses the CSS 2.0 overflow/overlfow-x/overflow-y on a tbody element to create a scrollable data set in which the headers remain stationary?
(in the past 3 versions of FF stable, everything works except that the grid lines of the table continue to be drawn for each row/th/td element creating a mess of lines below the scrollable data.

I seem to be having trouble installing add-ons...Is there a known problem?
What's "not a valid install package -207"?

hi, my linux version of firefox don't blurr the images when I zoom them in, but in windows they get blurry. I'm creating a webpage with pixelart and I want other people you zoom in without the images getting blurry, what can I do?

im trying to increase the maximun number of connections firefox can have simultaneously (global, not per server) by raising network.http.max-connections, but i can't get it to establish more than around 50 connections. is there any other key i need to change?
Candid
how can i stop pages from preventing the context menu on right click? changing dom.event.contextmenu.enabled did not take any effect on google maps.
mzz
Candid: in what version of firefox? recent versions are better at this
endor
hi. i am seeing an unexpected behaviour and am not sure what I am doin wrong. I am making a xmlhttprequest and add a custom header which as I understand it is a simple header. I still see a preflight request, which my server seems to not be able to handle. Why is that so?
augustl
so, I got a deflated binary string. I want to inflate it, and I'm not doing it in an extension. Can you think of any way I can do this?
say, forge a XHR request and set headers so that it'll gzip-deflate?
or something else, perhaps?
another question: are there any ORMs for HTML5 SQL out there?
JIZM
i want firefox to remember my passwords. I am talking about authentication prompts that are generated from apache .htaccess files. Not login boxes coded in HTML web pages. I have modified the nsloginmanager.js file and commented out the releavent "autocomplete" checks, I have verified my settings and firefox should be saving the passwords but it is not
it saves passwords everywhere else, just not these auth prompts
augustl
fire at will http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2171875 :)
mzz
help, an overflowing stack
heh, I thought that sounded familiar
as mentioned earlier: I wonder if you can abuse data: uris for this.
augustl
mzz: care to paste me a tiny snippet?
or link to docs or what not
mzz
then again, it's possible the browser doesn't let you
and it's not like I ever tried
hmm, hack time
augustl
wohoo
finished the zip file reader, btw
mzz
oh, joy
augustl
http://github.com/augustl/js-unzip
so all that's left (for now) is inflation of the compressed blobs
mzz
"access to restricted uri denied"
augustl
aww
mzz
(Action) tries with more <a rel="nofollow" href="http://">http://</a> and less file://
augustl
I have a string though!
so I probably won't have that problem
mzz
yes, I also have a string
but I think I'm not allowed to XHR a data: uri
http://mzz.mine.nu/m/gzxhr.xml is my dumb idea that does not work
unless I screwed up my data: uri
(Action) tests
nope, data: uri loads happily if entered into the address bar
(I'm messing around with that code, don't trust what you see :)
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=270748
augustl
ah
mzz
and of course that stops me from checking you can use gzip encoding for the data in a data uri
augustl
same behavior in safari and chrome too, fyi
mzz
error messages, that is?
augustl
oh well.. good old copy-paste of js found on web it is
mzz
bah.
augustl
well, not exactly, but almost
safari: "Oh noes: Error: NETWORK_ERR: XMLHttpRequest Exception 101"
Superbaloo
