techqbert

I just had a thought
how hard would it be to get Gecko to render PDFs?

kbrosnan
fairly hard
Peng
It's Gecko. The developers sacrifice goats every release just to get it to render web pages. :D
kbrosnan
mainly based on my basic understanding that pdfs are postscript based which firefox can't handle
squarism
giving up on firefox, chrome - here i come

is it possible to open link in a new tab in background from js (greasemonkey script) ?
window.open() + window.focus() doesn't work
Dreamglider
question, Why does firefox upon exit sometimes ask to sava tabs and quit and sometimes only to quit ?
or, what's the criteria for saving and quitting and quitting with out asking to save
kbrosnan
Dreamglider: if firefox is set to allways remmber tabs and windows it won't ask
Dreamglider
some times it asks and sometimes it does not.
harth
I would also like to know how it determines when to save and not save
I think if you quit from the File menu it always asks
Dreamglider
harth: alright i didnt know that, thanks.

hi i have a video tag opened .. which has completed downloading now how can i know which file in cache it would be corresponding to?
i had a try through the cache files.. but couldn't locate it clearly..
in the case of video tag, wouldn't it be corresponding to a single file ?
rjohnson19
If its really a <video> tag, you can right click and Save File As
shyam
rjohnson19: isn't there that bug which makes it reload the video file?:)
*re-download
rjohnson19
I don't know.
shyam
there is this old bug, if we say it to save a content, it will just re-download content from the link, instead of taking it from cache.
something to do with the mozilla backend..
donno why but i can't see the cache file of the video tag i just viewed on the Cache directory..
so was thinking whether there is something on firefox which tells me which content corresponds to which file on cache..

NfNitLoop
so I've installed a new version of windows and am trying to re-import my bookmarks.
I see places.sql, which looks like it's got all my stuff...
and bookmarkbackups/*.json which... don't.
is there no way to import directly from the sqlite table?
Accesshater
why didnt you use the bookmark manager :x
NfNitLoop
I did.
it only wants to import .json files.
which... don't seem to have my bookmarks.
the json files are 5k. places.sqlite is 788k.
so that's what I'm asking -- the bookmark manager can't import from an old .sqlite DB?
Accesshater
i dont really know

NfNitLoop
It looks like not. and copying it over to my new profile doesn't work either. Grrr.
Accesshater
most people here are idling here atm i think
you could try asking @ irc.mozilla.org
NfNitLoop
I figured as much.
ah, ok.
Accesshater
:)
cruxst
i, is it true that in Firefox anchors with id upon click will auto-show a hidden DOM element with same id? Example <a href="irc://irc.freenode.net/#hiddenDiv">click me</a> <div style="display:none" id="hiddenDiv">hello</div> In this example, Firefox will show and focus that irc://irc.freenode.net/#hiddenDiv.
Peng
I don't know. That sounds bizarre. You can test it yourself.
Accesshater
why dont you try it cruxst
cruxst
Accesshater: tried, doesnt work, but i've seen a post with a demo that worked,
cant find it now though. (looking for it now)
Accesshater
could it be that that demo used javascript to do that
http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/links.html or do you mean something like this
Peng
Maybe it was just <a href="#hiddenDiv">?
Accesshater
anchors in html
Peng
Anyway, I kinda meant to go to sleep! Bye!
Accesshater
good night Peng :)
BuGo_laptop
hi
can firefox work on multple cores?
Kartagis
hello
I have a problem with not being able to watch facebook videos in full length on firefox. I can do that on chromium. should I file a bug or something?
BuGo_laptop
anyone?
Accesshater
everyone?
:p
you could also try to ask your question @ irc.mozilla.org
Kartagis

er, sorry
xamox
is there an way I can have firefox delete my cookies when I close, but keep a couple particular ones?
cryton
xamox should be able to
i use CookieSafe extension for that kind of thing
xamox
Alright, I will give it a try, thanks cryton
cryton
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5207
xamox
cryton, seems to be clearing my exceptions. Basically all I want to do is have everything cleared except a few particular sites I use that I just want to fire up the browser and not have to login
cryton
i use CS Lite to block all cookies except those on my whitelist
if a site requires cookies then it's easy to temporarily allow the cookie, which then gets removed at shutdown
Kooothor
hi folks, I want to change tabs with Alt+arrow instead of Ctrl+Tab, can I do that ?? If yes, how ?
kbrosnan
Kooothor: mabye with keyconfig
Kooothor
kbrosnan: where are these configs ?
kbrosnan
no, it is an extension. google it
David-A
Is there an option "Never show the tab bar"? (In tab settings I find "Always show the tab bar". I want no tab bar but keep the little tab menu button.)
kbrosnan
no
the drop down is in the tab bar so it would be difficult to move it somewhere else
though there is always a chance that an extension exists
David-A
Maybe, 2nd hit is a "Hide Tab Bar" extension, I'll see what it can do. Thanks.
Kooothor
kbrosnan: ok, I've installed the extension, but I can't find any "switch_tab" or something to modify... :/ thx anyway :)
MissPiggy
hiya
I'm just wondering if there is an option to make tabs load only when you click them? because I open firefox and there's like 20 tabs that load but I only want to look at one of them
cryton
never heard of such a thing
David-A
MissPiggy: Is it good enough if FF did not remember the tabs from previous session? (settings > main > startup = blank page, for example)
MissPiggy
no I like tabs :p
I wonder if I should try and make a plugin to do this, but it's probably a bit too difficult
David-A
ok, then I dont know
yes, it may interfere with how FF cache and render currently un-shown pages, but its a good idea, cause it could save memory and cpu on a low end pc.
MissPiggy
well I don't even know what a cache is so I think that answers that ^^
kbrosnan
3.6 makes some strides to restore the currently active tab before others
David-A
MissPiggy: I recall I tried to tweak a setting in about:config to make it use less memory for pages in the history list. It didnt help much, and it might not affect tabs. Do you want me to search?
MissPiggy
oh no, that's okay, thanks
David-A
MissPiggy: I was looking for something else but found this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12183 (Cluster Tabs) saying "Decrease browser memory, increase speed".
MissPiggy
thanks that's interesting
