blackdeagle
I don't want to create a new account everytime I log into another computer ..
auscompgeek
you don't have to...
foul_owl
anyone know why firefox is using up so much memory?
blackdeagle
the thing is, my thunderbird profile is being saved locally
foul_owl, no sry
using chrome as default browser =)
auscompgeek
foul_owl: read http://support.mozilla.com/kb/High+memory+usage and for accurate measurement install https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14666/ or on trunk use about:memory
foul_owl
auscompgeek: already read the first link, tried all those things
auscompgeek: trying memory profiler, thanks!!
auscompgeek
there's also config.trim_on_minimize
blackdeagle
ok I just signed on for weave and I synched everything
auscompgeek
http://kb.mozillazine.org/config.trim_on_minimize

blackdeagle
lets assume I use the USB drive on another computer
there is NO firefox profile locally
foul_owl
auscompgeek: i think it is an issue with firefox, not individual web pages or tabs though
blackdeagle
does that mean I have to download at least the weave addon?
foul_owl
auscompgeek: 160m on startup does not sound right...
auscompgeek
blackdeagle, are you using Fx Portable from portableapps.com?
foul_owl, add-ons?
blackdeagle
auscompgeek, no I'm not
auscompgeek
amount of memory???
foul_owl
auscompgeek: all disabled. flash is disabled. java is disabled.
512 mb on this machine
auscompgeek
O_o
blackdeagle
I wanted to download the portableapps package thing but I realized its only for windows
or did I miss smth?
auscompgeek
blackdeagle, if using Linux, use WINE ;)
Peng
That's perverse.
Hehe.
blackdeagle
lol
auscompgeek
lol
foul_owl
using 160 mb virtual, but i am assuming virtual means caching to disk, which will slow things down, and i just don't understand why its needed. 50 mb res
auscompgeek
ram cache
foul_owl
50 mb for one web page is insane.
blackdeagle
I'm not sure if I want to use wine but I'll give it a try
auscompgeek
depends on the web page and your setup
foul_owl
50 mb for google.com home page

auscompgeek
O_o
but then again, there's JS...
foul_owl
ok, setting home page to blank html file
Peng
There's more to Firefox than the web page, you know.
auscompgeek
about:blank
Peng
You're saying that like the rest of the application has zero overhead.
foul_owl
peng: of course. but 50 mb res, 160 virtual doesn't sound right....
Peng
Maybe it's 47 MB for the browser and 3 MB for the website.
foul_owl
peng: my question is what is the overhead?
auscompgeek
the overhead? :P
foul_owl
yes
auscompgeek
s/\?//
foul_owl
what is it loading into memory? gecko layout engine? and what else?
auscompgeek
Tracemonkey
or whatever the JS engine was called...
foul_owl
does disabling javascript disable loading tracemonkey into mem?
auscompgeek
don't ask me...
Peng
foul_owl: Firefox is partially written in JavaScript.
foul_owl: It's not possible to disable it.
foul_owl
peng: ok, sounds good
Peng
Does Fx use tracing for chrome?
(Just curious.)
foul_owl
peng: what could take up so much overhead though? i would expect a random gtk app to use about 20 mb at the most
peng: maybe that is just too optimistic
Peng
(Action) shrugs
Bookmarks, history, SQLite, Safe Browsing, extensions, libraries.
foul_owl
anything else i can disable?
Peng
Why do you care about 50 MB of RAM?
foul_owl
point is: i have a pentium iii laptop with about 256 mb
it would be nice to be able to surf the web with that, but firefox takes up so much ram, system grinds to a halt
Peng
Ah/
auscompgeek
don't use a comp with a small amount of RAM
foul_owl
disabling java helped a lot!
Peng_
Well, I dunno. Sorry.
Look into mobile browsers, maybe?
foul_owl
ok, will do. its just a shame since I have been using firefox since the beginning. i would hate to throw it out just from memory usage issues that could potentially be fixed.
i wonder if gtk is the issue? that could well be the case....
anyone here do dev?
auscompgeek
just look at the cloaks
foul_owl
sorry, what are those?
auscompgeek
nm...
sur_
hello, I really like a feature of Safari: when you maximize it maximizes only up to a size that the current web page fits enough, is there a FF add-on that does that?
I hate full screen so I keep adjusting the size for every page, I am looking for an easy solution
foul_owl
peng, auscompgeek: thanks for your help. i think i might just look for a lighter weight browser. cheers!
auscompgeek
np
Peng
sur_: I can't help, but I'm curious how that works. What does it do on a well-designed website that has a completely fluid width?
s/well-designed // :P
sur_
Peng, smallest size possible
auscompgeek
1px*1px :P
sur_
Peng, by possible I mean smallest size that would not require scroll bars
Peng
sur_: Ahhh.
sur_
I would say that is not something hard to do, just calculate the width and height of a page
But probably I am mistaken
auscompgeek
what about when a page goes a long way down?
sur_
it gets the full height then
full height of the screen
I do not use Safari or mac but I think that is a very good feature for full screen haters
auscompgeek, 1px*1px if you only have . on your page
but there may be a min I do not know
auscompgeek
actually, . is 2px*2px on my screen...
except in this input box...
Peng
The line is still 1 em tall, though.
sur_
heh
come on you also liked this feature didn't you :)
Peng
(Action) maximises everything
sur_
that's against the whole point of multi tasking
Peng
Why?
I alt-tab.
auscompgeek
let's see, I know of someone who chats from the sidebar...
sur_
hehe
Peng
I'm a huge multitasker. I'm reading a comic right now.
It's kind of crazy, really.
sur_
hehe
Peng
And I have two IRC clients open! :D But I'm not using the second. :P
sur_
I still think that having a large white area on the right side of google search results is a bad use of precious screen space
mavhc
windows doesn't think people multitask
auscompgeek
lol
sur_
hehe
Rob37
is this support for just firefox
or thunderbird also
Peng
Rob37: /topic
Like the old topic, only without Firefox's version number, and a little shorter.
Rob37
thanks
i'll check irc.mozilla.org
Peng
For anyone curious like me, the old topic was: Firefox 3.5.6 is out! | http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all | If no one is around, try #firefox on irc.mozilla.org or http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting | For support with Thunderbird and other Mozilla software, go to irc.mozilla.org
apsiondasd
Does anyone here here have experioence with Thunderbird? its freezing up when i select muliple items in my inbox to delete
Peng
(Action) suggests irc.mozilla.org #thunderbird
apsiondasd
Thanks Peng but there's only one person there :(
Peng
....
There are 57.
Poor guy probably tried Freenode's #thunderbird.
sur_
:)
capin
is it possible to get "suggested searches" with the keyword searches i set up?
Pupeno
Any ideas what could happen firefox to make a page gray and not react to clicks? If I scroll it only the initially visible part is gray, the rest is fine, but nothing respond to clicks.
Digicrime
hello
Teh1337Bix
hay
I get this error when I try to go on facebook The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.
Is it my ISP or something more local.
Peng
*Probably* your ISP or Facebook itslef.
itself*
Teh1337Bix
well
I remember a while ago
some lebs blew up a switching station when we first moved to this broadband plan
so it was slower than dial up for a week
but the thing is the rest of the sites work fine.
Peng
ISTM it's unlikely you'd have something on your LAN that cares about individual sites...
Teh1337Bix
yeah vundo virus.
Peng
Maybe a NAT device malfunctioning somehow, or one of those Windows firewalls.
(Action) shrugs
Teh1337Bix
but it on all my computers
not just one so its not a virus.
Wait
I'll try it on my ps3,
if it still hangs that rules out windows firewalls and crap
seems a lot of people are having the same problem: http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?forumId=1&comments_parentId=97998
Peng
Teh1337Bix: That's a rather old thread. Anyway, have you read it? Anything help?
Teh1337Bix: irc.mozilla.org #firefox may be more useful than me.
Teh1337Bix
Said safe mode might help
but when I start up in safe mode its exactly the same.
wait
Peng
From a quick glance, Peer Guardian was mentioned.
Teh1337Bix
I don't even know what that is :(
Peng
Then you probably aren't running it? :D
Teh1337Bix
ya
works fine through a proxy
the funny thing is, sometimes it works
but its text only
and is missing all forms of formatting.
meh, when my brother stops playing mw2 Ima check it on the ps3.
meh

hello
Caelum
how do I find out what in my firefox is eating so much CPU
with 3 tabs, with idle pages, it still takes 13%
Nyx-
i dont think you can see a certain tabs memory usage
Caelum
maybe too many addons
Nyx-
i mean you can close a tab and see if that helps then reopen it and test another or something
yea i was gonna say that
usually if you get cluttered with alot of addons it can slow your FF down
kbrosnan
things like animated flash ads or less so gif ads will cause some cpu usage
or rogue javascript
Caelum
I have none of that stuff right now
oh hmm, closed this blog page and it went down
I like to keep lots of tabs open, but I guess I shouldn't do that or it'll eat all the cpu
Peng
It's obviously not ideal, but what's the big deal if you're burning some CPU?
As long as utilization is below 100%, performance isn't suffering.
Caelum
it goes up to like 60% for me with lots of tabs openn
I'd love an addon that would completely freeze tabs that don't have focus

Adobe Flash seems to either crash, or trudge along slowly and freeze quite frequently.. I was contomplating either installing gnash or swfdec [gnash seems to be the better choice of the two, from what I can tell] Is there a way to get mozilla to default to gnash without totally uninstalling adobe's flash player?
automagically
hi. does spellecheck sometimes not work in facebook's fancy text fields? sometimes i have to right click, disable spellcheck, then renable to get the red squigly lines.
tolpico
Hi, how do I setup shortcuts in Firefox Ubuntu. I need to get the backspace work for going back a page. Thanks.
ibqn
Hi, is it possible to set a custom mouse button for opening links in new tabs (default is the middle button)?
tolpico
I too am searching for customization of shortcut. but it seems we cannot do so. i want to get my backspace key working for moving page backward.

Can anyone here help with firebug
Froolap
(Action) pours water on it. fire is out.
aniasis
Froolap: yep then it just turns into one big bug.
I am using Chrome's JS debugger it is more useful
