Can someone please tell me how to get rid of this tab showing up every time FF starts? http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.5.6/whatsnew/
mahfouz
soreau: change homepage
in pregs
preferences
soreau
mahfouz: That is not the problem
The homepage is set to google.com
mahfouz: What happens is it loads all tabs from last time, then creates a new tab with this page
I want to get rid of it
http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.5.6/whatsnew/
mahfouz
sorry
must be somwehere in prefs though
soreau
I know there is a way, but it's annoying because it doesn't give you an obvious option to do it
I think it's something in about:config IIRC
eichi
hello, how to activate auto history search in the url field?
mahfouz
eichi: isn't this default in 3.5
eichi
mahfouz, dont know, i friend of mine says, he hasnt got this feature anymore
mahfouz
eichi: try preferences --> privacy --> location bar
there you can tell it to search history/bookmarks

jeez1234
hi, i'm planning to reinstall my OS [ubuntu]. how do i back up my history and stuff so that i can restore it in the fresh install?
xangua
jeez1234: just copy your hidden mozilla file> /home/username/.mozilla
jeez1234
that wont create any issues with plugins and stuff? :-\ i just want the history!

Can someone please tell me how to get rid of this tab showing up every time FF starts? http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.5.6/whatsnew/
It loads all the tabs that were previously open then opens a new tab with this page in it
wvd
So I just started using the firefox browser, and looked for some add-ons, but they didn't exist. Now I'm pretty thinking of creating my own. In which language(s) can add-ons be created for FireFox?
Peng
wvd: As in programming languages?
wvd:
Erk
wvd: Mostly you'd use JavaScript. XUL and CSS.
wvd
Peng: Ah, and are there possibility to use another interpreted languages?
Such as Python, Perl, RoR.
Peng
wvd: IIRC there's something with Mozilla and Python, but mostly no.
wvd
Ah
Peng
wvd: C or C++ (don't remember which), sure. :D
wvd
Well, since JS is kind of the same language-level of Python, so it shouldn't be a real problem.
Peng
wvd: A lot of the browser itself is written in JavaScript.
It's undoubtedly possible, but doesn't sound fun.
wvd
Another question: I got an add-on from the official mozzila site, I click "Add to firefox now", but it doesn't seem to be in my plugin list. Is it still being downloaded?
iKernel
I just copied the latest version of libflashp... oh wait i know why
Peng
wvd: There should be an "Install" section or somesuch. You have to restart for it to be installed.
wvd
Peng: it seems that this plugin, just fails.
Also, every plugin does need to be open-source, or are there no rules, about how to release a plugin?
Peng
wvd: I'm not sure about addons.mozilla.org's policies, but regardless, Firefox is not the iPhone. Mozilla is not a central clearinghouse for extensions and plugins./
wvd
Right.
Ah, a plugin works now, it's just the plugin who didn't work.

Peng
OK, it is a central clearinghouse, but developers aren't forced to use it.
H0lyD4wg
why are urlclassifier*.sqlite files kept in user profile directories? why not a single, system-wide copy of each?
wvd
Peng, any recommend guides on writing plugins?
Peng
H0lyD4wg: Probably because users can't necessarily write to the application directory.
wvd: Sorry, I don't know. You can probably start on https://developer.mozilla.org/. See also the #extdev channel on irc.mozilla.org.
wvd
Peng, thank you, going to start there.
H0lyD4wg
Peng, yeah, but on a large multi-user system you can update the db in a cronjob that runs with the right permissions, and then the users only need to read the files, not write.
Peng
H0lyD4wg: Well, I guess nobody's coded that yet.

i got a question about firefox 3.6....
the official press release says it's dued to be released at the end of this year...
when will it realize?
iKernel
is there a video downloader which, instead of being designed to scan for videos for popular video websites, actually sniffs out where the video stream is coming from and captures/downloads the video stream from the source?
even better... one that captures the video stream from the computer's local memory
g_khatwani123
currently i am downloading mozilla bundle through mercurial. i have completed 160MB. still it is downloading and in properties it is showing size on disk 650MB and is increasing more. please help me to know how exactly it will be
OpenSorce
okay, not trolling... but seriously curious. Other than the drawbacks due to it's early age: Why not Chromium?
gavin
hard to believe you're not trolling :)
Peng
OpenSorce: You like your extensions? You hate change?
OpenSorce
I love change. However there are quite a few extensions and more coming I'm told
Peng
Hell, I haven't upgraded to Firefox 3.5 yet, so Chrome is years off. :D
gavin
arguing about reasons to use a given browser over another is rather pointless
use whichever browser floats your boat
OpenSorce
I seriously wonder if there is not something obvious that I am missing in why I shouldn't use Chromium
gavin
stop wondering, try it out, see how you like it
OpenSorce
and I figured folks in the "firefox" channel would be quick to point it out... like I do to people who use that nasty M$ browser
gavin
no one can tell you what you should use without knowing what's important to you
Peng
gavin: Well, except for web developers.
gavin
and you can never really fully explain what's important :)
OpenSorce
I was thinking like some huge security flaw.... or maybe it sends all your information to google.... something drastic like that
gavin
there are no huge security flaws
they do make some different privacy tradeoffs (some stuff you type in the url bar is automatically sent to google)
but their privacy policy is pretty decent
OpenSorce
I don't trust google at all.... hence why I'm trying Chromium not Chrome.... okay I guess I'll go dig around in the code a bit
Thanks for the info guys!
Peng
I gave info?
If I did, it was unintentional.
OpenSorce
LOL
Well, you certainly gave input.... is that better?
wvd
hi
Peng
OpenSorce: Heh, okay. :D
mavhc
quite a few extensions != quite a lot of extensions
Froolap
everything is exactly like everything else except for where it's different.
mavhc
slightly more likely for a site to work in ff than webkit
OpenSorce
ah... there's the kind of answer I was looking for!
Peng
mavhc: What matters is whether the extensions *you* use are available.
mavhc
on the technology side chrome seems way ahead, because it's newer
Peng
Though WebKit wasn't born yesterday.
gavin
mavhc: "way ahead" in which way?
Peng
Sex.
OpenSorce
lol
So webkit.... that's the engine behind safari right?
Peng
OpenSorce: Yeah.
OpenSorce: And a few other browsers.
OpenSorce
that horrid Konqeror browser as well I think
Peng
Heh. Not a fan?
OpenSorce
Is anyone?
Peng
OpenSorce: WebKit originated as a fork of Konqueror's KHTML and KJS.
"Sex." was half a joke, but one of the key traits of Chrome is that it's currently the sexy new kid on the block, like Firefox was 5 years ago.
OpenSorce
yeah I was just reading that
Peng
It's certainly a cool browser, but it's not necessarily better or worse than Firefox, Safari, Opera, or any other browser.
OpenSorce
Not really, what is now firefox is a direct descendant of what used to be Netscape which is older than IE
gavin
"descendant of" is quite different
the provenance of the core architecture doesn't really matter from any user's POV
OpenSorce
Yes yes, I know.... it's started out as more or less of a rebranding of Mozilla
gavin
Firefox was quite different than Netscape or SeaMonkey
Peng
Nobody asks "Why not Safari?" or "Why not Opera?" or "Why not Firefox?". Chrome is getting preferential treatment because it's new.
OpenSorce
Then when the Gecko engine came into play it became much different
Peng
They're all kick-ass browsers, pick the one you like! :)
gavin
(some people ask that)
OpenSorce
To be fair, I'm in the Chromium channel where I asked exactly that a few hours ago :-)
and I can answer "Why not Opera"... Ads
gavin
opera doesn't have ads anymore does it?
OpenSorce
and "Why not Safari"... windoze and mac only
it doesn't?
Peng
They started giving out license keys for free a few years ago, then totally dropped the ads.
OpenSorce
may just be an indicator of how long it's been since I used it..
plus it isn't open source which is a big issue for me
wow... there's something I didn't know. Firefox gets 98% of it's funding from google
_qUaNtUm_
hi guys, items are not being visualized on my bookmarks toolbar: i have many of em and they dont fit in the space of my screen so usually at the end of the toolbar there's a little arrow and by clicking on it the remaining ones appear, now there's no arrow and just the sign of another bookmark, if i right click on it, itz this
"bookmarks toolbar items" icon which is never been there before
i run ubuntu 8.10 with ff3.1
can anyone help?
thanks
mavhc
as I read it firefox only ended up using the JS engine from netscape, everything else was redone as the code they open sourced was crap
opera gets its funding from google too
Peng
It does?
mavhc
google says: click our ads so we can destroy microsoft
Peng
...Why does Google need to fund half the browser industry? :D
Oh.
mavhc
it's only indirect funding, if people click ads on results from opera/ff search boxes they get a piece of the action
even ignoring chromeos chrome treats the browser more like part of the os, seperate processes, task manager
no restarting to install themes, extensions
if you look back almost everything google does is to get chrome os to be better, google earth plugin for example
OpenSorce
Actually the fact that FF gets most of it's support from google makes Mr. Dotzler's recommendation to switch to Bing a very brave one
mavhc
url?
OpenSorce
Hmm? Oh... http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/mozilla_director_go_bing
Risking FF's funding in order to protect user privacy is a pretty "stand-up" of him
mavhc
they can probably get the same deal for bing
Peng
heh
Bidding war!
OpenSorce
YOu really M$ would support Firefox?
*really think
Peng
OpenSorce: Maybe they'd do it to take down Google! :D
mavhc
only 2 links and 1 target=_new to get back to http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/asa/archives/2009/12/if_you_have_nothing.html
OpenSorce
I think they know better.... of course they did get in bed with Novell/SuSe Linux
mavhc
microsoft don't and can't really not help, they licence activesync to iphone
if they did not help the competition the government would be all over them
OpenSorce
They own a big chunk of Apple though
mavhc
everyone owns everyone
MAD
OpenSorce
lol
mavhc
and everyone cross licences patents to everyone, same reason
you screw with us we'll screw with you
OpenSorce
I can't believe it's nearly 2010 and we are still dealing with this 1980s philosophy that somehow human beings can "own" knowledge....
Software Patents are just silly
mavhc
what about hardware patents?
OpenSorce
IP in general
mavhc
if the patents were a) properly applied, only actual inventions, researched to find previous art better, and b) only lasted 5 years for software, it'd be fine
OpenSorce
I'd be much happier if that were the case as well
But think about this... the greater technology becomes... how far are we from cybernetic memory enhancement? When we get there, does M$ get to say they own knowledge that's in my head?
mavhc
the general problem with patents is if you invent something independently, but second, you can't use it
2019 supercomputer will be able to emulate a human brain, at low levels
OpenSorce
I'm talking more rudimentary than that, like a flash drive you plug into the back of your head
mavhc
why don't people want better ads?
better ads = less ads
OpenSorce
Let's say I know something that M$ claims to own, if I store that knowledge on cybernetic enhancement, would it violate their "patent"?
Wow, this is getting far fetched :-P
But seriously, along the same line, my hard drives are an extension of my brain, storing things I know (code, data, etc.) how can anyone claim to own that knowledge?
Elmaron
is it possible to get rid of the ugly borders of zoomed images when the page zoom is at 70% or something?
Wraithan
Ok, I try an start firefox but it gives me errors saying that it couldn't connect to the dbus socket. If I start firefox as root it works. Firefox used to work before my laptop battery died the other day. Where should I start with debugging this?
Oh, and yes, safemode fails
FairyKing
anyone konw about thewebsitesurvey.com malware?
is it a hole in firefox?
ive scanned with a few programs and still cant get rid of it
i think its those ahole virus companies releasing viruses so they have more business next year
Elmaron
FairyKing: I just googled for it
it seems it is actually a trojan or something
FairyKing
o
what program to remove it?
Elmaron
so probably the programs you scanned it with just don't have the necessary trojan database to find it
well
FairyKing: probably there is no program to remove it
FairyKing
ok
Elmaron
it should be possible to remove it anyway, but you'd need to find out how exactly that thing work
s
and that's probably not easy to do
FairyKing
i'll just wait
it's a pretty bad trojan thuogh, very often blocks internet for several programs
and causes firefox to crash every 5-10 clicks
Elmaron
FairyKing: nearly all anti virus vendors have ways to report new virusses to them
FairyKing: it might be a very good idea to get into contact with them, they might update their apps to deal with it
FairyKing
ok
whats a good one to try to contact?
Elmaron
even if it costs you 0,20$ a minute or something to call their hotline
FairyKing
