Hey, does anyone know any step-by-step tutorials for creating Mozilla plugins? the documentation seems pretty heavy going.
zibra10
i am trying to do some form of wizardry i think. But, currently - the way browers handle next/back button logic is that it a) adds an entry to the history queue and b) adds a position as well. so if im on 1 page, and i scroll have way down, click a link it will jump to the top of the page. when i hit back it will go back to the 1st page AND the position i was last at.
anyone know of a method of overriding the last part? I do not want the page position to shift at all when the user clicks a back button.
i thought there could be some vendor specific method of doing disabling this?
any ideas?
kbrosnan
firefox won't remember the possition if you no-cache the apge
er page
zibra10
kbrosnar: but then it wont remember the page either...
cjae
ok I have a site that says the site uses java script and an ok button, does this mean the firefox will be using possible dangerous scripts, by clicking ok?
mconnor
depends on the rest of the message...
zibra10
lol
kbrosnan: But then it also won't cache the page. Does webkit behave this way?
kbrosnan
no idea

cjae
mconnor: was that directed to me?
zibra10
cjae: Most (all) websites use javascript
mconnor
cjae: yeah
cjae
zibra10: well it only seems to tell me that message on that site
zibra10
cjae: what type of site is it?
cjae
(Action) knows what no script is but finds it very annying
adult
lol
zibra10
oh lord
there are plenty of safe alterntives...
cjae
it has flash video
zibra10
use spankwire
cjae
youjizz.com
zibra10
never heard of it. might be run by russians
cjae
it only seems to say it on some videos
zibra10
9/10 times it is probably for some horrific popup sh*t or advertising death - but your comptuer will be fine
cjae
it shouldnt really have to worry using a *nix based os as non super user right?
zibra10
naw, you'll be fine - enjoy the smut
cjae
(Action) smiles very creepy like
mconnor
man
you people
cjae
I actually have seen the same window on other sites as well, I was just wondering if no script is necessary
zibra10
kbronsnan: no-cache doesn't work with # content
cjae
my ubuntu distro seemed to get quite slow (which was actually still quite fast in compared to other oses) bedfore my clean install, I was wondering if ff might have been letting my /home get infected
any thoughts

kbrosnan
would be the first i've heard of soemthing like that
cjae
is click jacking a concern
(Action) was reading about it temporarily but don't quite understand
well thanks

compilerwriter_
kbrosnan: thanks for your help the other day. Got a clean install up and running on mothers lappy.
n0sq
allright - got it - i had to close firefox & reopen it in order for the bookmarks to show up
kbrosnan
Zombie_Will: there is a #thunderbird on irc.mozilla.org
apn
kbrosnan: usually this channel is empty
kbrosnan
on irc.mozilla.org ?
compilerwriter_
kbrosnan: did you see my thank you earlier?
kbrosnan
yes, good to hear you got it sorted out
compilerwriter_
I wasn't sure if you had just gotten logged in or not.
I still can't for the life of me figure out what in blazes the issue was in the profile files, but wiping them and starting over seemed to help.

Hi
everything text in firefox is invisble , anyone else experiencing this ?
auscompgeek
no
Terabyte
Hi
auscompgeek
hi
Terabyte
So i've been trying to ignore this for a while, but i can't anymore.... why is firefox 3.x so dam slow, memory and cpu consuming. No it's not the addons, i don't have those anymore, yes I've changed my profile, and frankly i'm not interested in solving the problem, I just want to know why, if anybody else is aware of this, and what mozilla is doing about it.
auscompgeek
Terabyte: CPU is measurable with https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9954 and https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7055 - also see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_CPU_usage
Terabyte: read http://support.mozilla.com/kb/High+memory+usage and for accurate measurement install https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14666/ or on trunk use about:memory
and you *do* have add-ons :)
Terabyte
how do you know?
auscompgeek
*hint!* plugins!
Cork
Terabyte: i would have a look at plugins, cause its most likly one of those causing it
like java or flash, or an av or...
Terabyte
ok right now i have plugins, yes, but they're standard plugins, they were there for version 2 etc...
Cork
loads of programs install plugins in firefox
Terabyte: doesn't mean the old version won't break newer firefox
Terabyte
anyway, those cpu plugins
they measure individual parts of firefox?
auscompgeek
the only necessary plugins are Flash and Adobe Reader :)
Terabyte
and adblock
auscompgeek
Terabyte: what plugins?
Cork
-adobe reader :)
auscompgeek
Adblock isn't a plugin!!!
Terabyte
i seem to remember i had greasemonkey installed, now i just don't bother since it's already super slow
auscompgeek
Cork :P
Terabyte
oh ok
addon then
lets have a look at plugins
auscompgeek
extension :P
Cork
Terabyte: plugins are small apps called to from firefox, addons are changes to firefox
auscompgeek
:)
Terabyte
oh
Cork
uh...
Terabyte
my goodness
vicious delicious....
Cork
addons==extensions :x
auscompgeek
s/addons/extensions/
Cork
ya
auscompgeek
:)
Terabyte
that is a spectacular list of addons i never consciously authorised...
[sp]
plugins*
hahah i'll get it right one day
auscompgeek
else you are saying that plugins are changes to Firefox :P
Cork
auscompgeek: ya i know, miss type :X
Terabyte
WPF ?
needed?
auscompgeek
no
that's .NET
Terabyte
why was it installed then
auscompgeek
you installed it
damn you Microsoft!
Terabyte
of course but it doesn't sit there and do nothing, what's it's behaviour?
Cork
.net?
Terabyte
presumably some things on the internet require it or else what's it for?
auscompgeek
allows hackers to break into your computer :)
Cork
ya
:/
auscompgeek
Cork .NET Framework
Cork
Terabyte: .net is to allow remote server forms to run installaitons on clients, ala ie's activex
among other things
Terabyte
ok
auscompgeek
WPF allows you to /see/ some files...
bot it's not widely used
Terabyte
java development toolkit vs java platform SE 6.....
auscompgeek
*but
Cork
like silverlight
auscompgeek
exactly :)
Cork
the reason i don't support silverlight :)
auscompgeek
I don't know of any sites that use Silverlight (except Microsoft...)
Cork
i know a few, but.. its really a few :)
auscompgeek
they developed it for their own use :P
Cork
and they have fallback to flash anyway XD
Alkaline
oops
auscompgeek
...
your client crashed?
so it did :P
Terabyte
probably
all sorted
so which java do i need?
auscompgeek
:)
Terabyte
Development Toolkit or platform se 6
auscompgeek
are you a web developer?
Terabyte
i don't do web development,
lol no
must have been installed as part of the JDK....
Cork
it is
auscompgeek
the platform allows you to use Java applets
Terabyte
shokingly ninja tactics these vendors have...
auscompgeek
you probably also have the .NET Framework Assistant installed...
Terabyte
not on the plugin list...
oh wait
extensions
Cork
.net isn't a plugin
ya
sadly its hard to uninstall
requires registry editing :/
Terabyte
that's ok just disable it
same difference when it comes to speed up right?
Cork
Terabyte: disabled is the same as uninstalled, when it comes to speed
Terabyte
cool
Cork
but the thing is, microsoft installs two extensions
auscompgeek
one is the bootstrap...
Cork
and the second one can't be seen in the extension window at all >_>
Terabyte
oh wonderful
is that microsofts fault or mozillas for not detecting it?
auscompgeek
Cork no, you can uninstall the 2nd one...
Cork
auscompgeek: not from the window
auscompgeek
Terabyte it was by design...
Cork
the its a global extension
Terabyte
oh ok
auscompgeek
the bootstrap installs the actual extension that does all the work...
Cork
but the bootstap, can cause problems too >_>
sadly :/
Terabyte
so what were those CPU extensions?
auscompgeek
yah
Terabyte
you gave several i can only find 1 in the search
Cork
Terabyte: .net?
auscompgeek
one measures plugins, the other measures JS I think...
I'm not sure :S
Terabyte
no i mean before my client crashed i was grumbling about cpu time, and (somebody) linked me to an extension/plugin/addin for measuring cpu time or memory or something
Cork
ok
auscompgeek
that was me
Terabyte
can you repaste?
Cork
