uhsf
from printing
Firefox prints black borders around images that are not present in the web page.
kbrosnan
might be a bad interaction with transparency
uhsf
there is no transparency in the page or in the image, it's all white background
Cork[home]
uhsf: 3.5.5?
uhsf
3.5.2
Cork[home]
btw you mean borders around missing images?
uhsf
no, around visible images
Cork[home]
hmm, can't say i've seen it, migth be from the pages css
uhsf
but just at top and left
the page css is so simple it's easy to see it's not the problem

Cork[home]
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=224534 says top right, might be it?
anyway, sounds like a regression or something
might be a regression from the compositor rework
uhsf
a regression is a bug that was fixed but came back again?
do you think it's fixed in 3.5.5?
usually i don't want to upgrade every 0.0.+1 release because it's more hassle than convenient
it's on linux btw
it really messes my prints i will have to go print in a widows ie somewhere
Cork[home]
uhsf: if you want to check that current status you would have to check minefield; aka 3.7
Peng
Firefox 3.5.2? I count...15 security vulnerabilities that have been fixes in subsequent releases.
uhsf: How is upgrading a hassle? It takes 30 seconds, and most of that is the download.
Oh, I suppose it's a little less convenient if your Firefox install is owned by root, but only a little.
mavhc
if you're going to upgrade 1 app, upgrade your browser
Peng
mavhc: Well, maybe your ssh client/server or SSL library.
Really. that's a silly proposition. Just upgrade everything./
mavhc
we're slaves to computers
ovnicraft
hi folks how i can configure the mime/type in my firefox? it doesnt works with any type
Peng
mavhc: I know. I avoid being AFK for more than 12 hours (or however long it takes me to sleep) because one of my web apps crashes a lot. :(
(and I haven't set up something to kick it automatically)
ovnicraft: What do you mean?
ovnicraft
when i download a file, cant open it aka. pdf files

If I fail to auth to a site, the only way I can get FF to prompt me again is to exit and restart. How can I make it forget that I failed?
blurry_
hello. is there an opensource equivalent for silverlight?
kbrosnan
blurry_: moonlight but it requires a ms provided binary and mono which some oss purists don't accept

OK....
I don't know whether mozilla firefox 3.6 or above solved the problems associated with flash content causing abnormal CPU usage
I did not notice any inconvenience first, but 5 minutes of flash content display has slowed the firefox down

How do I disable the feature where firefox remembers my tabs?
towardme
tag: what do you mean by remembering your tab?
tag: like, what do you try to prevent the tabs from happening?
tag
no, when I close firefox...and I open it again, it's persisting the pages I had open and re-opening the same tabs every time
Ever since I upgraded to 3.5 or so.
I'm thoroughly annoyed by this feature
I'd like to shut it off, but I haven't found the appropriate property in about:config or any options in the configuration menu which are obvious to me.

tag: Do you install any third-party extension?

Selenium IDE.
Peng_
It's like the first setting in the preferences, "When I start Firefox ...".
tag
I have it set to "Show my home page"
Peng
O
Welll, the only other idea I have is that Firefox is not shutting down properly (e.g. it's getting killed).
tag
most likely the case, this is a laptop
CcSsNET
anyone here familiar with grsec and pax?
ive verified twice that something particular breaks firefox
but since these are security hardnening pax particularly for memory restrictions. firefox is doing some REALLY ugly things now aint it. . .

How do I enable following telnet:// links in Firefox 3.5 on Linux?
Keep-Left-sign
why does firefox keep pausing/
it seems like it lets me type for 5 seconds, then freezes for another 5 seconds. also, i was holding shift when i typed the / there, so it would have been a ? if things were working properly
is there any way to find out what's going on here?
InvaderPar
do you have lots of addons installed?
Keep-Left-sign
i have 0 addons installed
InvaderPar
thats odd...
running what os?
Keep-Left-sign
not that that has anything to do with how i would find out what's going on here
Mattias
Keep-Left-sign: try <firebot> Vacuum your history/bookmarks, in Tools -> Error Console, paste Components.classes["@mozilla.org/browser/nav-history-service;1"].getService(Components.interfaces.nsPIPlacesDatabase).DBConnection.executeSimpleSQL("VACUUM");
Keep-Left-sign
i want diagnostic methods, not silly guesses
my history has nothing to do with this
this whole thing has got very silly indeed
Mattias
Keep-Left-sign: yes it has, when you type the bar i looks through your history
InvaderPar
sorry... my diagnostic methods always begin with silly guesses
Mattias
if the sqlite database is fragmentated it can take a long time
Keep-Left-sign
it started off as a nice idea about how i might possibly determine what the cause of a problem is, and now it's just got silly
Mattias
Keep-Left-sign: except for compiling firefox in debug mode, there isn't really any diagnostic tools
InvaderPar
i had similar issues, and after some random guessing, i found it to be some heavy addons. a new profile sorted it out nice and well
Keep-Left-sign
so you think this debug me would tell me why firefox keeps freezing?
Mattias
it might
Keep-Left-sign
random guessing is not enough
Mattias
Keep-Left-sign: when it comes to debugging, preformance problems, there is only one way
Keep-Left-sign
heh, i said 'me' instead of 'mode'
Mattias
eliminating posibilites
InvaderPar
elimination... troubleshooting...
Mattias
a "i want answers a text that tell me whats worn"
it doens't exist
Keep-Left-sign
firefox froze like 6 times while i typed that, so i don't blame myself
Mattias
*wrong
Keep-Left-sign
the problem is, i've already tried a bunch of times, and nothing has indicated any possible cause
Mattias
Keep-Left-sign: have you tried vacuuming your database?
Keep-Left-sign
so i need an actual diagnostic utility, not some stupid hypothitical process that's going to take thousands of years
InvaderPar
if i may, i would suggest running a new profile, because then you will know if its a firefox
Keep-Left-sign
e not i
InvaderPar
a firefox issue or a profile issue
Keep-Left-sign
it's a firefox issue, definitely
InvaderPar
have you tried reinstalling?
Keep-Left-sign
since if it were a profile issue, firefox wouuld just say "oh, your profile is messed up"
yes
InvaderPar
only firefox is freezing?
Keep-Left-sign
surely there's some way to determine what process is keeping firefox from responding for several seconds
yes, only firefox
InvaderPar
does that mean that videos can get stuck for 5 seconds too? or only when you're typing?
Keep-Left-sign
i mean, if there's no tool that can tell me that, how do firefox devs figure out what to do to the code in the first place?
nah videos are fine
i do have issues with videos, but they're only screwed up on a really old computer
and that computer isn't in front of me
Mattias
Keep-Left-sign: this might give something https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Debugging_memory_leaks
Keep-Left-sign
and i just waited 5 seconds, 5 seconds, 5 seconds, and another 5 seconds to post this message
jeez1234
how do i make firefox allow images to load in wikipedia alone?
fnHatesMyName
ok, what happened just now?
Guest38671
jeez1234: options > content > uncheck "Load images automaticaly" > add Exception
fnHatesMyName
firefox froze again, then everything messed up
then i tried twice to get back on freenode and it wouldn't let me connect
jeez1234
Guest38671: and what do i put as the exception? does it support wildcard chars? thanks!
fnHatesMyName
so, anyway... why does firefox keep freezing for 5 seconds at a time?
i don't want to mess around with 10 million combinations of stuff that might work; i want to determine why the perfectly reasonable config i have right bnow doesn't work
Guest38671
sigh...
Cork[home]
(Action) killes freenode
fnHatesMyName
surely people wouldn't try to push firefox as a usable product if there was no way to diagnose it
Cork[home]
jeez1234: in the options dialog
jeez1234: after the Load images automaticaly" you have a button "exceptions"
jeez1234
i click on it
type out the exception
reload
images still don't load in wikipedia
Cork[home]
<_<
fnHatesMyName
so, uh, where's the debug interface? i want to know why firefox takes so long to respond sometimes
Cork[home]
jeez1234: do you want to prevent loading images on other pages, or is the problem that they won't load on wikipedia?
fnHatesMyName
this functionality obviously already exists, or there wouldn't be a firefox released in the first place. so, what part of the help file did i miss
jeez1234
i want to block images in other pages [except wikipedia]
fnHatesMyName
jeez1234: privoxy
jeez1234
fnHatesMyName: why'd i use privoxy? :|
fnHatesMyName
as far as i can tell, even firefox devs don't care to give you control over image loading, so your best bet is a proxy
proxomitron, privoxy, squid, etc
jeez1234
fnHatesMyName: but i'm trying to use a feature they've built in it, which doesn't seem to be working :|
fnHatesMyName
opera has image loading controls, but, well, it's opera, so meh
Cork[home]
jeez1234: you might have to check the url of the image
fnHatesMyName
oh, what are you trying to use again?
Cork[home]
jeez1234: i'm not sure if it filters agens the site url or the image
jeez1234
i copied and pasted it from the url box
fnHatesMyName
the impression i get from chatting here is that the best way to diagnose a problem is to try random combinations until something works
there MUST be a better way
jeez1234
fnHatesMyName: i've blocked all images, i want to add wikipedia to the exceptions, but wikipedia pics still wont load
Cork[home]
jeez1234: adding en.wikipedia.org, wikipedia.org and upload.wikimedia.org
was what i needed
fnHatesMyName
jeez1234: browser? blocking mechanism?
jeez1234
oh yeah, the images are wikimedia commons! :|
fnHatesMyName
(Action) waits yet another 5 seconds
jeez1234
Cork[home]: thanks man :)
Cork[home]
np
jeez1234
fnHatesMyName: fixed :D
fnHatesMyName
what's fixed?
Cork[home]
fnHatesMyName: if you don't wan't to debug you'll have to keep waiting
fnHatesMyName
my 5s delay isn't fixed
jeez1234
whatever my problem was! :|
fnHatesMyName
Cork[home]: huh?
ok, well, enough of that, <5s delay> back to the subject at hand. how do i find out where this 5s delay comes from?
so, it seems like this isn't the sort of channel where i complain and get actual ff devs to respond.
do they hang out on another irc network?
i would love to see a "mainstream" "web browser" with associated diagnostic tools
i would love to see good advice on where i should apply more scare quotes
if that fails, i'd at least like to see one reason to use firefox over ie, other than ie suppprting activex
blocking activex makes them about equal
what kind of <30s> problem is this channel <5s> meant to help with?

hi
Roey
hello
question about firefox+foxyproxy+squid: Sites seem to take way too long a time to fully load. I tried disabling the proxy in Firefox and watched everything go back to normal. Are there certain squid.conf parameters that I can look into that'd make it faster?
kbrosnan
Roey: have you checked #squid ? obviously your distance from the proxy and the number of users using the proxy will cause browsing through a proxy to be slower
Roey
I have; got no response there
kbrosnan: well my proxy runs locally
and I'm the only user
kbrosnan
ahh
http://wiki.squid-cache.org/SquidFaq/SquidProfiling but it looks like it gets to some gritty details
Roey
oh my God.
one moment
kbrosnan: thank you very much!
from this I gather that it's just not worth it to use Squid. At all.
for me.
kbrosnan
Roey
ah
thank you for that
(giant 4k-line config squid.conf, jesus christ ;)
