If I set search path in a function ... will it be reset when function returns?

Hello
mutante
i want to rsync a /var/spool/exim from one (older) server to another, newer one. i assume i can just stop exim on old, rsync, start exim on new. let's say i would like to test delivery of a single message first before having it do all, how do i prevent it from trying to deliver all when i start exim after import
i would like it to not do anything except that i can still manually do "exim -M [queue-id]" to send out individual messages
henk
dont start exim
mutante
but i can still do the "exim -M" then?
henk
AFAIK yes & I always become unsure when put on the spot.
mutante
i'll try it out. thank you

Got a question
jgh_
it's liable to carry on with any other mails destined for the same host as the one you name
mutante: ^^^
dtordable: go ahead

mutante
jgh_: oh? that means if i don't start it and use exim -M it might deliver more than one message?
jgh_
yup
mutante
good to know, thansk for that comment
henk
jgh_: huh? that sounds strange & why/how is that?
jgh_
it's the usual try-to-reuse the open connection for any other relevant messages

Hello. If I'm using exim to relay outbound emails to mailgun which then forwards them on to the recipient, do I still need to set up a ptr record for reverse dns?
dtordable
Configured a postfix the for my cms and is a send only for local host but then I thought of my server and want a complete MTA for it and choosed exit to do the job
henk
oh ok, thanks
oasisfleeting: No, that is always optional.
dtordable
How can I have the same while learning exim in the server?
jgh_ that's my question
jgh_
dtordable: to be fair, Postfix is also a complete MTA. But we prefer Exim. The documentatino is online at http://exim.org/exim-html-current/doc/html/spec_html/index.html - not quite clear what you mean by "the same"
dtordable
A send only service in localhost
jgh_
what OS / distribution?
dtordable
FreeBSD
jgh_
it may have some example config files; if so pick the one that is closest to you needs, then with reference to the docs, modify it
if not...
the distribution has a very basic configuratino file that you can start with
it's full of comments; read it along with the docs
dtordable
Aha...
But the spec docs are huge...
jgh_
email is a more complicated subject that most people think. Fortunately you don't need to know it all to get going
start with chapter 3
dtordable
Aha...
What I've read I want virtual users hosted on a pgsql database
Every thing on the same FQDN
mutante
now i wonder if there is a better way to test this.. hmm
dtordable
Ah yeah
Dovecot to serve mails
But that's another joke hahaha
So jgh_ read chapter 3 or dirty my hands with the file?
jgh_
depends how brave you're feeling :)

dtordable
Read chapter 3 then, hahaha

Rubin: You where the one asking about the header length problem?
mutante
how long do you usually keep frozen messages around? i just deleted stuff that was over 170 days old down to the last 7 days.but even 7d seems long ?
dtordable
Where exim was created?
mutante
dtordable: "The first version of Exim was written in 1995 by Philip Hazel for use in the University of Cambridge Computing Services e-mail systems. "
hs12
dtordable: currently a team of maintainers is working on Exim, Phil Hazel retired some years ago.
