howdy... I'm curious if it's possible to configure exim to be completely stateless -- avoid ever writing to local disk. I'm currently using a transport to write messages to an external data store, but it's possible for messages to temporarily queue locally.
Is it possible for exim to complete the handoff to the transport during the smtp session, and either accept or defer the message accordingly?
google has failed me thus far
rjsalts
How would you set up etrn in exim?
Is there a way to specify unlimited time in a retry timeout?
i.e. cutoff time = never

Hello Guys ,
i am exploring exim
i am able to send emals but not receving ?
any suggestion to debug this ?
rjek
telnet localhost smtp
Talk SMTP, see what happens
hs12
sajidunnar: check the log file(s)
sajidunnar
its seems working the telent
henk
sajidunnar: swaks is a good tool for testing
sajidunnar: for debugging receiving, logs are the place to start, as hs12 said. But there can be issues preventing reception of emails that dont show up in the logs &
sajidunnar
Escape character is '^]'.
let me see man , actuyally kind of stuck like no log error mxtoolbox accesing my account and can send email
but not gettig emails
hs12
not a simple trace of being connected from mxtoolbox?
not even a trace of the connection from mxtoolbox.com? (Did you use there diagnostic tool?)

sajidunnar
yeah I did but let me try tht agian
though swaks seems cool
hs12
Yes, it's the most cool tool ever ;)
sajidunnar
i am not using 25 as smpto port so I think it shud not be issue for getting emails
funny thing I was getting emails few days before the production move :D
henk
but 25 _is_ the smtp port &
rjek
sajidunnar: ... Other people will only try to send you mail on port 25...
sajidunnar
I though its only for sending emails not reciving them
like googme or abc.com would send me emial on my smtp port 25 or 143 ?
henk
you have a lot to learn &
rjek
SMTP runs on port 25 for inter-MX communication
henk
143 has nothing to do with smtp whatsoever
sajidunnar
yes hank you are right
let me enable the port ;)
can any of you punch me righ tot he face :D
now getting the emails :)
Thanks for your helo guys
henk
there is no internet protocol for that yet ): not for lack of demand!
the closest thing is probably this:
(Action) slap sajidunnar around the channel with a big large trout
(;
sajidunnar
it feels good ;)
jgh_
143 is usually used for imap. While using it as a nonstandard port for mail submission is something Exim can support, you may find you really didn't want to do that
henk
hrhr
sajidunnar
actiully I am new to this so I want to avoid using port 25 from secuirty concerns
rjek
sajidunnar: You can make Exim completely secure by not running it at all. You'll also receive no email.
sajidunnar
if I use other port would I get emails ?
yes exactly sounds like your nickname :)
rjek
sajidunnar: If you want to receive email, you need to listen on port 25.
sajidunnar
yeah make sense now ?
whts recommended secutity tools for low memory servers
henk
sajidunnar: That doesnt make much sense & Please dont fall prey to snakeoil security or security theater. Make sure you understand how measures improve security. As avoiding port 25 makes absolutely no sense in most scenarios, I dont think you really understood why you wanted to do that.

sajidunnar
henk: its not something more secure just trying to save cost from google mails and my current host has some stupid polcies over port 25
jgh_
everybody else on the net will try to sent mail to you on 25. If you want that to work, you'll need to listen to 25
sajidunnar
using vult.com , it seems if u send spam or something they would freeze ur accounts
vultr.com *
yes actually I thought 25 is for sending emails and imap port for getting emails
henk
sajidunnar: errr, I dont really follow &
jgh_
25 s for _other people_ sending you mail
is
sajidunnar
well I got good slap by henk so I got it now
wht antivirus or spam filter would be low memory with exim ?
jgh_
however, do ensure that you only accept mail that comes from the outside world if it's recipient is your system. This is the "don't be an open-relay" rule.
rjek
sajidunnar: How much memory is "low memory" ?
sajidunnar
2gb with web apps
rjek
"web apps" is pretty vague
But I run clamav, SpamAssassin and a greylister of my own devising inside 2GB quite happily
sajidunnar
I mean running some sites of wordpress too
rjek
Oh, wordpress? And you're concerned about *exim*'s security?
henk
sajidunnar: I do spam filtering in exim, and also a lot of other anti-spam measures, like RBL checks and delays. I use SA for classifying messages, but Im not sure if SA can be considered "low memory" & It worked fine on my server with 1G of ram and a lot of other software running.
jgh_
and start with a properly secure smtp configuration before worrying about virus- or spam-filtering
henk
lol, well said, rjek
sajidunnar
I do ecommerce too with magento :P
I would try those again , liast time use clamav it was taking 400 mb
last *
going to install the clamav and spam
Thanks guys for your help :) I think I am all set
