Anybody have any ideas for creating a system sieve filter for Exim+Cyrus?
Flaim
hi folks.. I just configured exim4 w/ debconf, and when i send a msg outside of the system, I get 'connection refused' in the log.
simplechat
I've got kind of a silly question. I'm trying to set up exim4 as a standard smtp outgoing mail server. My problem is that mail is being sent to it, but its never actually going anywhere... and i'm not sure how to debug it
mainlog doesn't seem to have anything helpful
Kind of an odd question. I'm trying to use a smarthost with exim, however it isn't working (its saying that it needs authentication even though its been given the credentials in the passwd file)
I can telnet into the smarthost and use that perfectly well
is there any reason why it would just plain explode?
phx
use exim's debug mode to find it out
simplechat
phx, i see a lot of R=hub_user_smarthost T=remote_smtp_smarthost: SMTP error from remote mail server after MAIL FROM:<> SIZE=2563: host smartypants [127.0.0.5]: 530-5.5.1 Authentication Required. Learn more at\n530 5.5.1 http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=14257 r23sm3849906rvq.12
in its mainlog
is there another way?
henk
yes:
09:18:51 < phx> use exim's debug mode to find it out
simplechat
ah, ok
-d
henk
(Action) .oO( repetition really works... )
simplechat
henk, this might be a stupid question, but is it supposed to sit at 'Listening...' and ignore sent mail?
i'm running exim -bd -q30m -d
even on restarts/etc. its not noticing that i've sent it mail, which is unfun
(Action) has no idea how to get exim to, well, actually work

phx
simplechat, -d+all
simplechat, RTFM
simplechat
phx, which manuals?
(that give instructions that actually work....)
phx
man exim
simplechat
exim flags i can work out
exim 'non-doing-stupid-things' i need help with
like say sending through some mail, but not others
even with identical mail commands and setups
my debug output finishes at 15:27:24 22841 sender address = root@intranet
shouldn't it have information as to how its actually handling the mail?
phx
use debug mode and read it
simplechat
this is with debug mode?
phx
that should be quite a verbose output
simplechat
exim -d+all ?
it has a lot of output
but it ends prematurely
phx
read it
simplechat
i have
phx, http://pastebin.ca/1889061 is its complete output
phx
it's for you, not for me
learn to interpret it
simplechat
to be perfectly honest i'd rather my MTA work
i'm not an MTA dev
phx
neither me, it's for sysadmin
simplechat
but seriously, do you have any ideas as to what its doing?
I understand what its debugging output is saying, its just not actually giving me any useful debug info
phx
i might have ideas, i just don't have the time to deal with your debug output
simplechat
what are your ideas?
henk
That is an invalid ID, or the post has expired.
simplechat: yup, no paste from you...
simplechat
henk, there you go http://pastebin.ca/1889071
henk
afaict this output has no relation to your problem
simplechat
henk, thats what i thought too
but i'm kind of out of ideas

henk
simplechat: afaik now exim just runs in debug mode. do whatever fails and look at exims output...
simplechat
henk, i'm sending mail via the mail command
which normally ends up sending mail
however exim just sits there and stares at me blankly
henk
and the debugging exim is the only exim running?
iamkoos
simplechat: is 'sendmail' a symlink to your exim binary?
simplechat
one second
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 2009-12-01 01:39 /usr/bin/mail -> /etc/alternatives/mail
henk, yeah
iamkoos, ?
iamkoos
uhm, 'mail' should not be a symlink to 'sendmail'
ok, i guess that's a debian'ism, nothing to worry about ...
simplechat
iamkoos, this is a standard deb system
iamkoos
simplechat: which sendmail
simplechat: file /etc/alternatives/sendmail
simplechat
/usr/sbin/sendmail
iamkoos, mail normally works
iamkoos
simplechat: ls -l /usr/sbin/sendmail ;)
simplechat
just with debugging it failed
iamkoos
*shrugs* eh, so whats the problem anyway :/ i kinda caught the tail end of this
simplechat
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 2009-12-01 01:39 /usr/sbin/sendmail -> exim4
iamkoos, trying to get exim to use a local tunnel as a smarthost
(to get it to place nice with google)
and its refusing to budge
iamkoos
ok, so when mail is sent, do you see it in the queue? exim -bp
simplechat
I get large quantities of "2010-06-23 15:41:34 1ORS4z-0006OV-Gr ** root@$HOST$ R=hub_user_smarthost T=remote_smtp_smarthost: SMTP error from remote mail server after MAIL FROM:<> SIZE=2567: host smtp.gmail.com [127.0.0.5]: 530-5.5.1 Authentication Required. Learn more at\n530 5.5.1 http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=14257 c1sm67953383wam.7"
even though authentication is provided
iamkoos
^^ ok there u go .... authentication is not working ...
simplechat
auth is correct
and in the right file
and if i try and get it directly connect
auth works
and it says that it gets sent
iamkoos
^ from the looks of it it's not authenticating ...
simplechat
but it never actually goes anywhere
phx
we already know this, but he didn't look this up from the debug output, why exactly it's not working
iamkoos
hold on, i will give you some config snippets
simplechat
??
henk
simplechat: find out what that 'mail' command you are using actually is and does...
simplechat
mail is apparently sendmail
henk
simplechat: ls -l /usr/bin/mail
simplechat: ls -l /etc/alternatives/mail
simplechat
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 2009-12-01 01:39 /etc/alternatives/mail -> /usr/bin/bsd-mailx
henk
<sarcasm>yeah, appears to be sendmail</sarcasm>
simplechat
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 2009-12-01 01:39 /usr/bin/mail -> /etc/alternatives/mail
iamkoos
simplechat: http://slexy.org/view/s21HhpkSqA << relevant config snippets from my config
i don't use/understand the debian-style config [un]fortunately :\
simplechat
iamkoos, i haven't actually edited any config files, just reconfigured the debian package
so i don't understand any of that
iamkoos
well if you want to do things the debian way you're probably better off asking debian people :s
simplechat
well it seems as though nobody can get exim to work right, lol
so i guess i'm stuck doing things the non-debian way
iamkoos
simplechat: sec
simplechat: http://slexy.org/raw/s2UjZRmMPO
^ that's an entire exim4.conf for you to adapt/use
simplechat
thats an entire conf?
petemc
debian ships a copy of the vanilla default config in /usr/share/doc/
simplechat
hmmmm
how do i define "use_gmail_domains?"
iamkoos, i'm trying to deal with this for a particular domain only (not for a gmail account)
iamkoos
simplechat: ooops... domains = use_gmail_domains shouldn't be in there ;D
henk
simplechat: i use debians exim since a few years now. saying that "nobody" can get exim to work right is just plain stupid.
iamkoos
simplechat: you want to use gmail as a smarthost for a particular domain and another smarthost for everything else?
simplechat
iamkoos, i want it to be the smarthost for everything
given that its the only thing that can send mail
henk
simplechat: the config layout is very well documented. and it's not difficult at all imho.
iamkoos
then remove 'domains = use_gmail....'
simplechat
sweet :)
henk, well, how did you set yours up
?
henk
simplechat: be more specific please.
if not, the answer is: the way i need it.
simplechat
lol
how did you learn what you needed to do to set your exim server up?
henk
by reading.
petemc
simplechat: /usr/share/doc/exim4-base/
henk
exim docs, debian docs on their exim package, smtp rfcs and so on...
simplechat
Hey iamkoos :)
Thank you heaps :D
iamkoos
k :P
pokui
j #ruby
sorry forgot a /
simplechat
hey iamkoos would hosts = 10.0.0.0/8 mean that it would relay mail for anything that has a 10. ip address?
iamkoos
simplechat: yeah
simplechat
SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO: means that gmail won't let me run a smarthost on my end?
petemc
it means that google doesnt like what you're trying to send mail to
or, it could mean that google doesnt like you for some other reason
iamkoos
could mean anything depending on what their complaint is :s
simplechat
ok
hmmmm
petemc, is there any way to work out what exim is trying to send?
petemc
the logs?
run exim in debug mode
simplechat
i was thinking the headers
but hmm
ok
henk
hrhr, have fun finding out what google doesn't like...
i work for an isp google does not accept mail from. neither the company not receiving our mail (googleapps customer) has an idea nor does google tell us what the problem is...
simplechat
asked them?
phx
check the rejection message?
henk
simplechat: sure. but there are not many channels where you can ask google and in most of them i did not get a reply or a reply stating that they don't give support there or something like that.
phx: that's a simple one: google says we are a bulk email sender and we should follow the best practice guide for bulk mailers somewhere on their homepage. we are NOT bulkmailing though and that option is missing from the page they link to.
simplechat
thats just plain sucky
henk
ack. the only solution that could work is signing up for the free google apps trial, try to send mail from our server to the domain managed by google apps and then go for support from google and drop the trial when the problem is solved. but that sucks too imho...
simplechat
is there any reason why i'd get sendmail error 550 relay not permitted even though mail works on the command line?
henk
i'd guess there is a reason...
simplechat
is there any reason that i can easily find?
pokui
simplechat: exim -d -bh source.ip.address
then drive an smtp session like you would over telnet
simplechat
interesting
pokui
simplechat: that's assuming that it's the local exim dropping the connection
simplechat: for a remote server giving you 550, then just telnet to the smtp port. (use openssl s_client if you need tls)
simplechat
exim abandoned: unknown, malformed, or incomplete option -bh
and its local
johno
hi hi everyone
was wondering if anyone could recomend a tool on ubuntu to support high avalability MTA
MTA being exim
basicly a system that insures a copy of the queue/queue's are on another system. Where by the first system fails the second system sends the emails out
simplechat
johno, standard HA practices should be fine
johno
really?
simplechat
keep your mail queue on a HA device (drbd volume/etc.) and use heartbeat
should
johno
HA/pacemaker?
okay
I got it
thanks
I was wondering if there was a better solution
simplechat
as with everything: Test
johno
:)
got it
kill simplechat
hum...
simplechat
uh.......
johno
ment to type kiss
simplechat
i don't think you meant to say that out loud
johno
but it changed the texted to kill
simplechat
either of those things
johno
lol
tats wierd
simplechat
(Action) walks away now
johno
[ERROR]The command kiss is not known to the server.
Farkie
johno, try /me <action>
johno
(Action) action
hehe
