hi all
I've got a quick question. we want to send mail through internet site; except for our hostname. Do we need to use a smarthost or is there a way to configure this for only our hostname?
we got it fixed by using new router
bye all

Hello! I have exim at a Debian machine. I simple need my system messages go to my company email. See, my machine is local, I just want exim send mail to my oficial mailbox (I will test PHP scripts here too, I want test them).
Yesterday somebody told me to execute sudo dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config , I've done it
and added mail.myserver.com:my@sendermail.com:password at /etc/exim4/passwd.client.
But EXIM do not send emails, my machine nas logs like "Verification failed for <root@machineName>"
*has
How can I proceed to have this emails at my e-mail account? I want test PHP files here too, and PHP uses mail program
henk
newb0: root@machineName is the sender address?
newb0
henk: hellp
*hello
I exitted PC today. Yes, root@machineName is the sender address. My machine has no registered mail or domain, it's a simple local machine
henk: Again, my problem:

sounds like exim tries to verify the sender's address, which fails.
what's machineName actually? hostname or FQDN?
newb0
ok, my machine has no registered domain, then I cannot do a valid email address. MachineName today is "Server", then root@Server
I have no valid host name to configure here. :(
henk
newb0: a hostname is only a name, just like newb0... my server is called 'leonardo'. that's the hostname. hostname + domain = fqdn.
compare the output of 'hostname' to 'hostname -f'. first should say "Server" the other "Server.you.domain".
if not, that's broken and needs fixing.
newb0
Here hostname = hostname -f
How can I fix it?
henk
/etc/hostname should contain the hostname only. /etc/hosts should contain a properly formatted line for your host. see man hosts

newb0
henk: My /etc/hosts has 2 lines: 127.0.0.1 with "localhost" and 127.0.1.1 with SERVER.my.homeip.net (I've added my.hom... now). I need this 2 lines?
henk
should be ok for a dynamic ip...
newb0
henk: hstname -f returns now an error: "hostname: Name or service not known"
henk
newb0: paste your /etc/hosts please.
newb0
henk: pasting. And yes, I have dynamic IP
http://pastebin.com/uKreHitq
henk
newb0: append " SERVER" (your hostname, not fqdn) to the second line.
format is: ip-address fqdn hostname
newb0
Second line is now "127.0.1.1 SERVER SERVER.mycustomname.homeip.net", hostname -f returns only "SERVER"
ah sory!
henk
_append_
newb0
thanks! hostname -f is correct now xD
I try send the email now?
henk
ok, you probably have to run dpkg-recon.. again for exim.
newb0
running!
henk
it asks for a 'mailname' to qualify unqualified addresses with. that needs to be your fqdn.
newb0
henk: Error yet, this is the log output: http://pastebin.com/eGDg6HxP
henk: I'm behind a router. I need open and redirect here EXIM door to do this works?
henk
Sender verify failed
says the smarthost. do whatever needs to be done for that verification to succeed. i don't know your setup and the obfuscation is a bit confusing...
'server' is a really bad hostname. even as a substitute for the real one...
;)
newb0
ok xD
Let me try describe better my config
henk: I have a simple machine with Apache. To access Apache I have mycustomname.homeip.net registered at dyndns.com. Now I want use PHP files at Apache and need have "mail()" php function (who uses "mail" command from system) working. My idea: I have a real website (DNS + online host) working, then I want all exim emails be redirected to there
henk
newb0: do you control the mailserver there?
newb0
henk: in my registered domain I have CPanel access.
henk
hm, don't know cpanel...
newb0
henk: With CPanel I can create any account
henk
can you change settings regarding sender verification and callouts?
s/and/or/

newb0
no :(
henk
ok, then you need to set it up so the verification succeeds, whatever that may mean.
i'm not sure whether the smarthost really does a callout or a simple verify.
newb0
How can I confirm this?
henk
i guess you need another mta you could monitor for incoming callouts while connecting with telnet and providing a sender address that mta is responsible for.
but perhaps there is also a simpler way, i don't know :)
newb0
henk: My superior is calling me here, I will need exit. I will ask for WHM control panel access and will back here to another try then
henk: Really thanks for your help :)
henk
ok
good luck, cya
newb0
henk: (how can I clean the mail I send to test? They're repeating at log xD)
henk
newb0: exim -bp (or mailq)
newb0: exim -Mrm id
exiqgrep -z (check the list, anything you want to keep?)
exiqgrep -zi | xargs exim -Mrm
ah, if they are retrying they are not frozen...
in that case probably only: exiqgrep -> check, if all need to be removed: exiqgrep -i | xargs exim -Mrm
newb0
henk: perfect! all clean! thanks again! :D
henk
you're welcome
newb0
henk: bye, I back soon! ^^
Rapha222
hi
I've a little problem
I get a lot of spam which are trying to be relaying
I stop them, but exim log all of the rejects
petemc
wheres the problem?
Rapha222
I've found the log_level option here http://www.exim.org/exim-html-3.20/doc/html/spec_11.html#IDX756
but exim doesn't accept it
[root@r21135 rapha]# cat /etc/exim/exim.conf | grep log_level
log_level = 5
[root@r21135 rapha]# /etc/init.d/exim start
Dýmarrage de eximý: 2010-05-27 21:41:21 Exim configuration error in line 64 of /etc/exim/exim.conf:
main option "log_level" unknown
[FAIL]
petemc
you're looking at docs for exim 3.2
Rapha222
petemc: exim log around 128MB every day
petemc
Rapha222
petemc: thanks, Google wasn't my friend this time :/
petemc
yeah, its a known issue
Rapha222
I've set write_rejectlog and message_logs to false and log_selector to "-all"
but exim still log reject
*rejects
petemc
ive never tried to disable exims logging, so i cant help you
would it not be easier to delete the logs you dont want?\
Rapha222
the logs take a lot of space and take useless I/O queries
petemc
most people dont consider logs useless
Rapha222
yes, ideally I don't want to remove logs, juste remove reject log
I found a little tweak, by redirecting main.log to /dev/null
my CPU use is dramaticaly discreasing :)
petemc
i wouldnt have thought writing log files was cpu intensive
Rapha222
petemc: i'm a on a NFS system :s
I've another little problem
i can send emails to all of the adresses which are hosted on my server, except info@domain.tld
petemc
exim -d -bt info@domain
Rapha222
I don't know why
but with "info", exim try to use root a receiver
petemc
that command will tell you why
Rapha222
petemc
read it yourself
Rapha222
oh yeah
info is an alias for postmaster in /etc/aliases
thanks
petemc
np
Rapha222
so
good night
petemc
