Hi everyone! So I have a problem with exim processes that get "stuck" and never close. I finally figured out now that it's stuck on an UDP nameserver request (lsof). We're running a local resolver, but for some reason exim is querying the second/third nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf sometimes. Two questions .. why does it not always use the local resolver (it has been responding)? Why can exim get stuck indefinitely on a DNS query?

hi all!
how can i debug in exim an incoming smtp-session?
henk
Rene: with the debugging options, perhaps?
Rene
yep, but i have not yet figured out where to specify them...
henk
depends what exactly you want...
Rene
i'm trying so see what happens when my smartphone tries to authenticate against my smtp-server
i get just an error in the phone that it can't send the message
henk
Rene: have a look at the logs...

Rene
i coud not find anything in normal syslog..
henk
are you sure exim logs to the syslog? at least on debian it does not by default.
Rene
yes, i have debian, and in /var/log/exim4/*.log i cant' find anything..
henk
Rene: then exim is not running.
Rene
the only "hint" i get is TLS error on connection from xxx.xxx.xx.xx..elisa-mobile.fi [xx.xx.xx] (gnutls_handshake): A TLS packet with unexpected length was received.
indeed it runs..
henk
you just said you can't find anything in the logs. exim logs if it runs. so i assumed it's not running.
so one of your statements must be wrong...
Rene
well, i want to get a more detailes debug-output from the smtp-session..
henk
have fun...
i loose motivation to help if people behave like you just do, sorry...
Rene
ok, what's your point??
henk
what point?
Rene
what's wrong with my behaving?
i'm asking how i could debug the smtp-process, that means what the client and server does during a session
but apparently you have no clue..
henk
"can't find anything in the log" vs. "it runs". i tell you that those two statements don't match because exim writes to the log when it runs and you don't even feel it's necessary to say _anything_ to that... you don't care that your statements don't match (at least for me), i don't care about your problem anymore.
easy, isn't it?
Rene
it looks that you don't understand a clear question: "how can i debug in exim an incoming smtp-session". That's not to me just tailing a logfile..
henk
'yawn'
Rene
but you're right, you're not the right one to ask, because you apparently don't know how to do that..
henk
it's a start...

why would postgres apparently not see $sender_address_domain in my router? http://pastebin.org/192390 shows the router. yet when i test with -f and -be, it expands to the expected answer
postgres logs show that the query is select * from "priGetSmartHosts"('')
