Hello, can I ask a question a question regarding regarding default dspam router in debian ?
kobold
hello, I'd like to configure exim to put on hold all the mails for a specific server if I get the SMTP error 421 after MAIL FROM; any hint?
henk
why?
kobold
because hotmail servers tell me that I exceeded the rate limit allowed
but exim4 keeps retrying all the hotmail messages one by one; I'd like to retry them later instead, as configured in the retry section
phx
configure your retry intervals then
henk
kobold: what does your retry section for hotmail look like?
kobold
henk: mx4.hotmail.com * F,7d,15m
henk
kobold: why only mx4?
kobold
henk: it's an example

henk
kobold: dig MX hotmail.com
kobold
I have all the others too
henk
kobold: it sucks.
kobold
henk: what?
henk
kobold: when i am asking for your retry section for hotmail and you give me 1/4 of it, what am i supposed to think?
kobold
henk: that I have other rows like that, and I didn't want to flood the channel?
henk
kobold: there are pastebins.
kobold
henk: ok ok, sorry
next time I will paste to a pastebin
henk
just leaving out 3/4 of the truth for not flooding a channel is not helpfull at all... and YOU are the one wanting help. i just lost all motivation to help you btw... good luck.
kobold
let's retry my question: is an SMTP error 421 associated to the message if I get it after a MAIL FROM? can I tell to exim to consider it an host error?
henk: thanks, good look to you too and have a nice day
"""Some hosts have been observed to give temporary error responses to every MAIL command at certain times (`insufficient space' has been seen). It would be nice if such circumstances could be recognized, and defer data for the host itself created, but this is not possible within the current Exim design. What actually happens is that retry data for every (host, message) combination is created."""
it seems it is not possible then
well, with a couple of iptables rules and a script to check the exim4 mainlog, I can probably do it...
yep, it works quite well, maybe it is like hitting a mosquito with a hammer, but solves my problem :)
sakhi
anyone with good exim documentation? I need to setup a mail server from scratch.
petemc
exim.org has the best documentation, tho it isnt a basic how to, or anything like a how to
phx
sek, first read the docs on the basic working mechanics, ACLs, routers, transports, retry intervals, then go to a pub with a few papers and a pen, get a beer, start drawing your requirements, what do you want to implement (from where you want to accept mails, how (scanning, etc), what kind of users you've got, MXs, whatever). get over your hangover, start reading the docs again, and when you're finished, start typing the config file :)
sakhi,
herron
(Action) cannot afford the beer
phx
how that can happen?
herron
effin expensive here and I need a job!
phx
yeah, that sucks
where do you live?
sakhi
thanks phx will do that.
phx
sakhi, if you're new to exim, then it's a nice order to make your for setup if you're serious about it. exim is like the swiss army knife of the MTAs. it needs a bit of understanding before you actually work with it. afterwise it's really easy
herron
phx, UK

phx
i've heard you've got fine beer over there. though myself haven't been there, just to ireland, and it was very nice there
herron
I am in Burton, which is/was the main town for beer production in the UK
phx
and why don't you have a job?
herron
not seen a job that suits me, Im a bit of an all rounder not just software (electronics and mechanical too)
